Welcome to National Twilight Zone Day!

Today we celebrate the anthology television series The Twilight Zone. It is unclear why the show is celebrated on May 11, as there is no apparent connection between the date and the show. During its 5-season run, the series was both popular with fans and became critically acclaimed.

The Twilight Zone premiered on October 2, 1959, on CBS. It was created by Rod Serling, who not only came up with its concept and wrote or co-wrote 92 of its 156 episodes but also hosted and narrated it. It was one of the first science fiction series, and also had elements of suspense, horror, psychological fiction, drama, and fantasy. Serling combined his love of pulp fiction novels with topics that weren't often addressed on television at the time: social issues such as war (including nuclear), McCarthyism, and racism. In the opening of each episode, characters were transported to another dimension—the fifth dimension—which was called "the Twilight Zone." There they dealt with many unusual events, and the show often had a surprise ending with a moral lesson.

TV Guide ranked the series as #5 on their 2013 list of 60 greatest shows, and as #4 on their 2013 list of greatest dramas. In 2016, Rolling Stone put it at #7 on their list of greatest television shows of all time. Following its initial run from 1959 to 1964, there have been various iterations of it. The first revival of the series took place from 1985 through 1989, when 110 episodes were produced. A second reboot took place from 2002 through 2003, when 44 episodes were made. A third take on the series started in 2019. A radio series was produced from 2002 through 2012, where episodes from the original series were adapted. Twilight Zone: The Movie—starring Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks and directed by John Landis—was released in 1983. A television film, Twilight Zone: Rod Serling's Lost Classics, was released in 1994.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Donovan Clingan ‘comfortable’ in zone defense (itlh; Adler)

One of the top recruiting analysts in the sport had some interesting things to say about Syracuse basketball 2022 four-star target Donovan Clingan, who suited up in an AAU event this past weekend.

Competing for his AAU team, the Boston-based Team Spartans, the 7-foot-1 Clingan played in the KC Classic in Kansas City, Mo., and caught the attention of Eric Bossi, the national basketball director for 247Sports.

You can click here to find out how Team Spartans fared in this event. First and foremost, Bossi writes that “Clingan proved to be one of the most intriguing players in the building.”

The four-star center and consensus top-60 prospect in the 2022 cycle is a junior at Bristol Central High School in Bristol, Conn. Clingan put forth a tremendous junior campaign in which he landed All-American honors.

Recently, Clingan revealed a top eight that includes the Orange, Michigan, Ohio State, Georgetown, Connecticut, Providence, Rutgers and fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Notre Dame.

Syracuse basketball 2022 prospect Donovan Clingan impressed at the KC Classic.

There is one nugget from Bossi, in particular, that I found quite encouraging. He said of Clingan, “Defensively he looks most comfortable anchoring a zone and he is a good straight up shot blocker.”

Now, just because Clingan excels in a zone defense, and the ‘Cuse plays a 2-3 zone, doesn’t mean in any way, shape or form that he is headed to the Hill.

That being said, if Clingan is comfortable in a zone defense, this is a good thing. And the Syracuse basketball defense often prides itself on blocking shots, as well as making deflections and creating steals.

Ten thoughts on Syracuse’s 10 scholarship players as the Orange reload after a Sweet 16 run (theathletic.com; Gutierrez)

Syracuse will look a lot different next season, after two projected starters (maybe three) bolted. They were somewhat unexpected moves. Alan Griffin turned pro, Quincy Guerrier entered the transfer portal and Kadary Richmond bounced to Seton Hall. Marek Dolezaj will play pro ball overseas, and a handful of reserves left the program: Woody Newton, John Bol Ajak and Robert Braswell. That adds up to seven scholarship players gone from a Sweet 16 team, an unprecedented amount of turnover for one of the winningest programs of all time. Buddy Boeheim and Joseph Girard are the only starters who will be back.

But onward we go. Players begin trickling back to campus in less than a month to prepare for the summer sessions. A five-star freshman comes to town in a matter of weeks, along with three incoming transfers. Next month’s workouts mark a fresh start, a fresh opportunity. How might it all fit together for the Orange? Here’s a look at each scholarship player and what to expect.

Syracuse councilors approve spending $75K in federal relief money on basketball mural (PS; $; Baker)

The Common Council today approved spending $75,000 from the American Relief Plan stimulus money to pay for a mural honoring four local basketball legends.

The money for the “Syracuse trailblazers mural” was approved in a 6-3 vote.

Councilors Khalid Bey, Joe Carni, Pat Hogan, Chol Majok, Latoya Allen and Joe Driscoll voted yes. Councilors Michael Greene, Rita Paniagua and Ronnie White voted no.

The mural, as proposed, will be painted by Jonas Never, a well-known muralist from California. It will feature Breanna Stewart, Earl Lloyd Jr., Dolph Schayes and Manny Breland in a towering mural on a private building on East Onondaga Street.

Councilor Paniagua, who voted against the funding, said there needs to be a more clearly defined process for giving money to public art projects. She also said there needs to be an opportunity for the public to comment on the projects.

Free beer! Doughnuts! Appetizers! Onondaga County offers incentives for Covid vaccines (PS; Knauss)

If you’ve been waiting for motivation to get a Covid-19 vaccine, this may do the trick. Beginning Friday, Onondaga County will provide coupon books to newly vaccinated people entitling them to free beer, drinks, coffee, doughnuts, appetizers and other goodies from at least 18 local restaurants.

The offer kicks off from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Onondaga Lake Park, where county nurses will give the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine and hand out the coupon books. If you can’t make it Friday, there will be other opportunities. Anyone who gets a vaccine from the county between May 14 and May 21 will receive the coupon book.

“We’re going to have multiple other clinics they can attend.” County Executive Ryan McMahon said today.

What can you get? Here are a few examples: A free coffee and doughnut from Glazed & Confused. A free draft beer at Kasai Ramen. A free drink from Trappers II, or Danzers, or Heritage Hill. Free popcorn at Ma & Pa’s Kettle Corn. A free coffee from Café Kubal. A free appetizer from Wildcats Pizza. And there will be others.

The restaurants are donating the goodies in hopes that it will drive traffic. Participants can cash in as many coupons as they wish by June 1, when they will expire.

Other communities have found that giveaways resulted in successful vaccination clinics. Erie County recently had one of its best turnouts by offering a free beer with a (vaccine) shot.
