Welcome to National Apple Pie Day!

Apple pie is seen as being very American. Just how American? Well, there is not one but two National Apple Pie Days in a year. And it's almost a certainty you've heard the phrase "as American as apple pie." How ironic it is, then, that apple pies didn't even originate in the United States, nor did apples!

Apples came from Asia, and their seeds and cuttings were brought to the Americas by Europeans during colonial times. Prior to this, only crab apples were grown in the Americas. The first apples brought to the Western Hemisphere were tart and were used for making cider. It wasn't until around 1800 when apples better suited for pies—with a higher acidity and crispness—began being grown in the United States. It was also around this time that Johnny Appleseed began traveling the country and helping solidify the association of the apple with America.

The earliest record of the phrase "American as apple pie" dates to 1924, when it appeared in an advertisement in the Gettysburg Times. The association between apple pie and America became inextricable by World War II when American soldiers would tell journalists they were fighting for "mom and apple pie." This eventually led to the phrase "As American as mom and apple pie." It became a prevalent saying in the United States during the Postwar years.

Who is the Russell Westbrook of Syracuse basketball? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

I love it when readers come up with a question that requires a little bit of research on my part.

One reader in particular; he goes by Bill N., makes a habit out of sending in notes that have nothing to do with Syracuse basketball, but then he turns them into a Syracuse-related question.

Bill did it again this week with a very timely question about Russell Westbrook, who plays for the NBA’s Washington Wizards and recently broke Oscar Robertson’s record for the most triple-doubles in a career.

So let’s start there and then move onto questions about the NCAA’s transfer portal and a look back at the greatest rip-offs in SU basketball history.

Q: Russell Westbrook is most associated with triple-doubles, but he has a single season accomplishment that in some ways is more impressive. He had a season where he led his team outright in scoring, rebounds, and assists in a game 40 times. Prior to this year the most any player did that in the history of the NBA was 21 times. What’s the most times during a season a Syracuse player has led the Orange in points, rebounds, and assists outright in a game?

It's the final day of the guys filling out The Athletic's Syracuse basketball fan survey. They discuss who should be the next head coach of the Orange. Also, what changes would they make to the basketball program? Plus, what they would do if they were the SU athletic director and how they would grade John Wildhack's first 5 years on the job. Mike McAllister "On The Block" 5-12 (ESPN; radio; Axe)

Mike McAllister of Syracuse on SI joins the show to talk about the Orange’s recruitment of Class of 2020 recruit, Arthur Kaluma and much more in the world of recruiting.

On The Block On Demand 5-12 (ESPN; radio; Axe)

As Syracuse enters their first round matchup against Georgetown in the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament Brent has one question, “what’s on the line?” Later, some thoughts on Quincy Guerrier’s top four transfer destinations as well as Benny Williams.

Syracuse Basketball: Big-time interest rises for 4-star target Matas Buzelis (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball got in relatively early on with elite 2023 prospect Matas Buzelis, however, I have a feeling that his recruitment is going to blow up in the near future.

We recently detailed how the four-star Buzelis performed well at the Bill Hensley Run-N-Slam in Fort Wayne, Ind., according to Eric Bossi, the national basketball director for 247Sports.

On the AAU circuit, the 6-foot-8 Buzelis plays for the Chicago-based Mac Irvin Fire. He is a sophomore at the Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., which is one of the best prep-school programs around the country and has sent numerous guys to the ‘Cuse over the years.

Buzelis may have flown a bit under the radar for a period of time, but those days are likely gone. The 247Sports recruiting service recently came out with updated national rankings for the 2023 cycle, and Buzelis is four stars, No. 46 overall, No. 10 at small forward and No. 2 in New Hampshire.

Bossi and other recruiting insiders have said that Buzelis absolutely could climb further up in the nationwide ratings for his class. Given his size, length, athleticism and versatility, Buzelis would thrive in the Orange’s 2-3 zone, as some media reports have indicated that he can play small forward, point guard and shooting guard.

A chicken sandwich is seen at a Popeyes, (AP Photo/Eric Gay)

Popeyes is adding a restaurant in Syracuse suburbs (PS; $; Doran)

Popeyes fast-food restaurant is coming to Township 5 in Camillus.

The Louisiana-style fried chicken chain is moving into the Summit Federal Credit Union building in the shopping center, said Kevin Langan, leasing agent for Township 5. Summit is closing that location, he said.

The fast-food restaurant will bring its famous chicken sandwich to the western suburbs. It is expected to open this fall, Langan said.

The location is between LongHorn Steakhouse and Costco.

This will be the fourth Popeyes location in the Syracuse area. Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen has more than 3,100 restaurants, including one on Brewerton Road, Erie Boulevard East, and the food court at Destiny USA.

Let's get it done next year, young man! Going to be fun to watch him. Could be a really nice rim protector.
Yeah, let’s hope he doesn’t spend half the season parked on the bench because...”not ready”, and gets a chance to play thru it. IMO, he can develop into a force if he gets the time, patience, and respect. But we shall see.
