Welcome to National Strawberries and Cream Day!

Made with sliced strawberries and homemade whipped cream, strawberries and cream is a snack or treat that is quick and easy to make. Its basic recipe can be tweaked in many ways. Vanilla or amaretto liqueur can be added to the cream, or sour cream with brown sugar can replace the whipped cream altogether and be used as a dip. Layers of strawberries and cream can also be used to make trifles.

Strawberries and cream is a British dish. In 1514, during the Tudor period, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey—who was close to King Henry VIII—began building Hampton Court. Its large kitchens fed about 600 people twice a day. According to one story, a chef there came up with strawberries and cream so that desserts could quickly be prepared for the many guests. The chef's name is not known and Wolsey tends to get credit for the treat's creation. Another similar story says that strawberries and cream were first served at a banquet hosted by Wolsey, but it puts the date of their creation at 1509, which predates the building of Hampton Court.

Quincy Guerrier, Syracuse transfer and All-ACC selection, commits to Oregon Ducks men’s basketball (oregonlive.com; Nemec)

The Oregon Ducks men’s basketball roster got another major injection of talent this offseason.

Having already secured a pair of coveted transfer guards – junior college first-team all-American Rivaldo Soares and Oklahoma’s second-leading scorer, De’Vion Harmon – Oregon desperately needed a versatile, playmaking forward to round out what had become a guard/center-heavy roster.

So, when Syracuse transfer and All-ACC selection Quincy Guerrier entered the transfer portal in late April, he immediately projected as the perfect piece to fill the role left by departed all-conference performer Eugene Omoruyi.

Down to a final four of Arizona State, Illinois, Memphis and Oregon, the 6-foot-7, 220-pound athlete chose the Ducks on Thursday afternoon:

As a sophomore, Guerrier averaged 13.7 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 49.3 percent from the field, earning third-team all-ACC honors.

Why Quincy Guerrier left, a Benny Williams update and more: Syracuse mailbag (theathletic.com; $, Gutierrez)

Let’s begin this month’s mailbag with the most popular question among Syracuse fans in recent weeks, which concerns one of the program’s higher-upside players: Quincy Guerrier. Why’d he transfer to Oregon? Several times late this season, coach Jim Boeheim heaped praise on one of his most talented wings, calling the sophomore forward from Canada an All-America caliber player. “He’s got a tremendous upside,” Boeheim said in March. “I really think Quincy’s a tremendous player.”

Syracuse basketball among teams recruiting 4-star Chris Bunch hardest (itlh; Adler)

A national recruiting analyst says that the stock of 2022 four-star wing Chris Bunch is on the rise, and that Syracuse basketball is one of five teams recruiting him the hardest.

The 6-foot-7 Bunch, a junior at De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif., is a top-100 prospect and a top-20 small forward in his class, according to 247Sports.

Per Eric Bossi, the national basketball director for 247Sports, the college squads recruiting Bunch the hardest are “Florida State, Oregon, Seton Hall, Syracuse, and USC.”

Interestingly enough, the ‘Cuse recently picked up a verbal commitment from another 2022 four-star wing in Kamari Lands, who is a junior at Prolific Prep in Napa Valley, Calif.

The 6-foot-8 Lands, rated No. 25 overall in this cycle according to ESPN, can reportedly suit up at small forward, shooting guard and point guard.

Axe: Quincy’s call, SU celebrations, Tebow not missed (quick takes) (PS; $; Axe)

Some quick takes on Quincy Guerrier heading west, Syracuse and Le Moyne lacrosse looking to step into championship weekend and the Syracuse Mets while wondering if May 21 is too early to turn on the air conditioning.

Quincy Guerrier

Quincy Guerrier announced that he will transfer from Syracuse to Oregon on Thursday.

Former Syracuse forward Quincy Guerrier will transfer to Oregon after spending two seasons with the Orange.

Guerrier’s announcement that he would enter the transfer portal was a head-scratcher at first, but now I can hear the duck call.

The portal offers a clean slate to pick a school that will best showcase a player’s desired skills, especially those knocking on the NBA’s door like Guerrier.

Seth Davis of CBS Sports and The Athletic says Syracuse could be “one of the most potent offensive perimeter groups in the country next season” with players like Joe Girard III, Buddy Boeheim, Cole Swider and Jimmy Boeheim roaming 20 feet, nine inches from the basket.

That left little room for Guerrier to showcase his perimeter game and that’s why Oregon, the school he originally committed to, came back in the picture.

Syracuse to get professional men’s soccer team in spring 2022; club teams for kids included (PS; $; Ditota)

A professional men’s outdoor soccer team will debut in Syracuse in the spring of 2022.

The announcement of AC Syracuse’s arrival on the pro soccer landscape was made at Onondaga Community College on Thursday evening. The team will play in the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA), considered the third tier of pro soccer in the United States after Major League Soccer and the United Soccer League.

Sam Belhseine, a businessman with ties to Syracuse and Rochester, will own the Syracuse club. Games will initially be played at OCC, though the team is hopeful a $25 million sports facility proposed for the former Roth Steel property near the shoreline of Onondaga Lake will become its permanent home.

Among the details gleaned from Thursday’s event:

The Owner: Belhseine owned two Dunkin’ restaurant franchises in Syracuse from 1996-2000 before selling them, moving to Rochester and buying seven more Dunkin’ franchises in that city, he said. He has since sold the Rochester Dunkins, he said, but still owns real estate in various locations in Upstate New York.

“I’ve invested a lot between Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse,” he said.

Belhseine said five years ago, he talked with people in Syracuse about starting a semi-pro soccer team. He’d owned a semi-pro team in Rochester that competed in the UPSL from 2016-19, he said. While investigating a potential semi-pro opportunity in Syracuse, consultants convinced him a pro team was the way to go.

I agree Tom.

Thank you for these daily collective informative articles.

I take them for granted but don’t know what I would do if there weren’t there.
