Welcome to Heimlich Maneuver Day!

Dr. Henry Heimlich came up with the Heimlich Maneuver in 1974. Also known as abdominal thrusts, this procedure is used to dislodge food and objects from the throat of a choking person. As the American Red Cross claims over 3,000 deaths are caused by choking each year, celebrating Heimlich Maneuver Day is an important way to raise awareness and help save lives. The origin of the day is unknown.

Elijah Fisher might be the best basketball prospect ever out of Canada...

Syracuse basketball could pursue No. 1 prospect in consecutive classes (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball may have seen a dip in recruiting over the past handful of years since moving from the Big East Conference to the Atlantic Coast Conference, but I’ve said more than once of late that the Orange is trending in a positive direction.

The ‘Cuse has a 2021 five-star commit in forward Benny Williams. The Orange recently received a verbal commitment from four-star wing Kamari Lands, a top-25 player in the 2022 class.

And Syracuse basketball coaches are pursuing numerous elite prospects in the 2022 and the 2023 cycles. The future looks bright on the Hill, by my estimation.

Another interesting tidbit could come into play as we look further down the road to not just the 2023 class, but also the 2024 recruiting cycle.

It remains to be seen whether this will actually transpire, however, the possibility does exist that the ‘Cuse may ultimately target the No. 1 overall player in both the 2023 and the 2024 classes. That’s pretty cool.

Syracuse basketball has its sights set on two premier prospects in future cycles.

Last summer, Orange coaches offered a scholarship to Canadian prospect Elijah Fisher from the 2023 class. The 6-foot-7 wing is a sophomore at the Crestwood Preparatory College in Toronto, Ontario.

The five-star Fisher already holds a bunch of high-major offers, from teams such as 2021 NCAA champion Baylor, Kansas, Florida State, Arizona, Florida, Oregon, Memphis, Seton Hall, West Virginia and Southern California. He also reportedly is garnering interest from Kentucky.

I’ve read numerous articles on Fisher as well as comments from recruiting insiders about the 2023 cycle that speak to the potential that he could be the No. 1 player in this class when all is said and done.

Syracuse basketball coaches recruiting 4-star Justin Taylor ‘super hard’ (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball coaches, including head coach Jim Boeheim, are clearly prioritizing 2022 four-star wing Justin Taylor in this cycle, and I’m hopeful that this will pay off in the form of Taylor committing to the ‘Cuse.

Any day now, the 6-foot-6 Taylor could trim his list of contenders, likely to around five teams, according to various media reports. In fact, Taylor could have already done so by the time that this article publishes.

To that end, I would be absolutely shocked if Syracuse basketball isn’t among the final group of suitors for Taylor, who is a junior at the St. Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Va.

Taylor is scheduled to take an official visit to the Hill on June 9-10, per multiple reports. He’s also planning to make official visits next month to fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member North Carolina and Big Ten Conference squad Indiana, according to a piece by 247Sports national analyst Dushawn London.

London adds that Taylor is expected to have unofficial visits with Virginia Tech and Virginia. For a while now, I’ve felt that when Taylor reveals a list of finalists, the top contenders would amount to the Orange, UNC, Indiana, Virginia Tech and Virginia.

Syracuse Basketball: Many roadblocks exist to get 4-star Kyle Filipowski (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball only offered elite 2022 big man Kyle Filipowski in late April, although by all accounts Orange coaches are making the four-star prospect one of their top priorities in this cycle.

The 6-foot-10 power forward, a junior at the Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Wilbraham, Mass., has a bunch of official visits and unofficial visits lined up for June, including a trip to the Hill on June 5-6, according to various media reports.

Given that Filipowski has a ton of high-major offers, that he is traveling to Central New York for a visit is an encouraging sign. Additionally, I’ve read some articles and comments from recruiting insiders that suggest Filipowski is high on the Orange and head coach Jim Boeheim.

It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Syracuse basketball remains in the running for Filipowski throughout his recruiting process. Will he choose the ‘Cuse? That’s tough to tell at this juncture, but I do think that the Orange has a good shot to win out.

That being said, Filipowski’s offer list is quite extensive. A recent tweet from Tipton Edits says that Filipowski is being recruited the hardest by 11 teams, and they are the ‘Cuse, Duke, Ohio State, Indiana, Connecticut, Notre Dame, Iowa, Wake Forest, Rutgers, Northwestern and UCLA.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Kamari Lands skyrockets in national rankings (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2022 commit Kamari Lands recently fell from five-star to four-star status via ESPN, but his new national ranking from has absolutely soared.

has updated its national ratings of the top-150 prospects within the 2022 cycle, and the 6-foot-8 Lands made one of the biggest jumps throughout the entire class.

Lands, a junior at Prolific Prep in Napa Valley, Calif., climbed a whopping 32 spots to No. 30 overall. He is also listed by as four stars and the No. 14 small forward in the 2022 class.

Hopefully, these new rankings for Lands bring some excitement to the Orange fan base. Lands, a versatile and athletic prospect who can suit up at multiple positions, gave a verbal commitment to Syracuse basketball this past April.

Lands’ verbal pledge should help fuel a big-time 2022 cycle for the ‘Cuse. The team also has brought in 2021 five-star commit Benny Williams, an elite forward out of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Syracuse Basketball: Dior Johnson says not rushing to ‘get the fast money’ (itlh; Adler)

Elite point guard Dior Johnson gave a verbal commitment to Syracuse basketball in February 2020 and then re-opened his recruiting process back up last November.

Since February of last year, I’ve read countless comments from my fellow Orange fans on social media and in chat rooms that speak to them thinking that the five-star Johnson will never set foot on a college campus.

That is, many ‘Cuse fanatics are prognosticating that the stellar 2022 point guard is heading straight to the professional ranks from high school, rather than taking a year to shine at the collegiate level.

Of course, this could be what ultimately transpires for the 6-foot-3 Johnson, who is a junior at Corona Centennial High School in Corona, Calif.

As we detailed in a recent column, Johnson has disclosed his five finalists, and they are Mike Hopkins-led Washington, Alabama, Kentucky, Oregon and the National Basketball League (NBL), a professional basketball league based in Melbourne, Australia.

Once that list came out, naturally a ton of Syracuse basketball fans opined that Johnson is likely headed to the NBL. But he provided some interesting comments on this topic in a recent interview with a national recruiting analyst.

Last call for NY’s indoor dining curfew (PS; $; Breidenbach)

New York state lifted its months-long curfew on indoor dining on Memorial Day.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced at the end of April that the mandatory midnight closing time for indoor dining would be lifted on Memorial Day. The curfew on outdoor dining was lifted May 17.

The 1 a.m. curfew for catered events, including weddings, also ended Monday.

Cuomo first put the 10 p.m. curfew in place in November to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The curfew shifted to 11 p.m. in January and midnight in mid-April.

Bar and restaurant owners and local government officials have pushed in recent months for the curfew to end. Some bars, including Mulrooney’s Pub and Benjamin’s on Franklin nightclub in Armory Square, announced plans to reopen for the holiday weekend. They had been closed since fall.
