Welcome to Chimborazo Day!

Chimborazo Day celebrates the spot on the Earth that is closest to the moon and farthest from the center of the Earth. Chimborazo is an inactive volcano that is in the Cordillera Occidental range of the Andes Mountains in central Ecuador, and has an elevation of 20,565 feet. Although Chimborazo has a lower elevation than Mt. Everest, because of its spot near the Equator it is the farthest from the Earth's center and closest to the moon. The Earth is not a perfect sphere, but rather it is an oblate spheroid. The Equatorial diameter is larger than the Polar diameter, and Chimborazo lies close to the former. Being that it lies on this Equatorial bulge, it sticks about a mile and a half farther into space than Mt. Everest.

Jim Boeheim Releases Statement on Mike Krzyzewski's Retirement (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim, a long-time friend and colleague of Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, released a statement regarding Coach K's retirement following the 2021-22 season.

"Mike’s impact on basketball goes so far beyond the wins his teams have accumulated," Boeheim said via Syracuse Athletics. "He has been a unifying leader for the sport at every level, including college, professional and international. It’s impossible to overstate the positive impact he has had for decades.

"He did a remarkable job building successful programs at Army and Duke. It is extremely difficult to create that level of achievement and then sustain it for the long period of time the way Mike managed to produce it.

"Mike joined with Jerry Colangelo to generate the same type of maintainable organization with USA Basketball. I’m forever grateful for the opportunity he gave me to sit alongside him during that amazing run that lead to three gold medals for our country.

"I’ve enjoyed the challenge of coaching Syracuse against his Duke teams over the years – no coach prepares his players for big games better than Mike. I’ll look forward to a few more opportunities to do that next season."

Who might succeed Jim Boeheim at Syracuse? - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

In April, North Carolina coach Roy Williams retired after a 33-year coaching career. The Hall of Famer won three NCAA titles with UNC and went 903-264 in his illustrious career.

On Wednesday, Duke HOF head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced that the 2021-22 season will he his last, meaning he’ll have one more season to add on his all-time wins list record of 1,170 wins to go with five NCAA championships.

The last in the ACC Hall of Fame trio is Jim Boeheim, who after 45 seasons stands at 1,083 wins (or 982 if you ask the NCAA), and has one title to his name. He has made no announcements about his retirement, and there is no specific timeline for him to leave his post. But at 76 years old, there are far more seasons behind him than ahead.

When that day comes, who would be the best candidate to replace him?

There are certain criteria that any replacement would need to have:

  • A strong connection to Syracuse as a player or coach (or both)
  • A unique ability to recruit the northeast (and convince recruits to spend 1-4 years in freezing temperatures)
  • The knowledge of how to effectively coach the 2-3 zone
  • Be relatively young (can’t have a coach staying for 3 seasons and then retiring, like Rick Pitino)
Here are some candidates that fit some or all of these categories that could become the next head coach of Syracuse:

The obvious candidates:

  • Mike Hopkins: Hopkins, a scrappy forward for SU in the 90s, was Syracuse’s designated successor to Boeheim before he took the head coaching position at Washington. Since his arrival, he’s been a two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year, though the Huskies went just 5-21 in the past season. His recruiting prowess is well known, and he’s landed a variety of blue-chip recruits since taking over with the Huskies. But would Hopkins ever leave UW to come back to Syracuse?
  • Gerry McNamara: McNamara had a legendary playing career, playing a huge role in SU’s 2003 national championship. Since joining the coaching staff in 2009, he’s become an excellent recruiter, most recently landing five-star class of 2022 wing Kamari Lands. McNamara lacks head coaching experience, but he ticks all of the other boxes.

Syracuse Basketball: 5 Best Individual Performances of 2020-21 (itlh; Mlodzinski)

Syracuse basketball fans were gifted with some tremendous games from the men in Orange this past season. Looking back, these were the best of the best.

Even though it was an up-and-down year for Syracuse basketball, there was no shortage of big games from some of the most talented guys on the team. The honorable mention list could go even further, but I decided to look back at the top five individual games from the season.

For some more context, this list could be dominated by Buddy Boeheim, because when he caught fire, he lit up the scoreboard like no one else. Quincy Guerrier also had a really impressive 18 point and 16 rebound game in an Orange win over Northeastern, but I tried to add a bit more importance to meaningful games, rather than great stats against a subpar opponent.

With that being said, there are two games against mid-major opponents on the list, but you’ll see why I decided to include them.

So here’s one last hoorah for all of the clutch moments, scoring outbursts, and double-doubles on the season, and a look at the games that will really be remembered.

Syracuse basketball 2023 target Blue Cain should soar into top-50 overall (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2023 prospect Blue Cain likely has a way to go with his recruiting process, but the elite bucket-getter is primed to jump into the national rankings for his class in the near future.

Although not currently rated by some of the primary recruiting services within the 2023 cycle, I fully expect that to change for Cain as these recruiting Web sites update their national rankings.

Cain, a guard, had an outstanding sophomore season at Knoxville Catholic High School in Knoxville, Tenn., and he’s also faring quite well to date on the AAU circuit with the Knoxville-based B. Maze Elite.

According to a recent tweet from B. Maze Elite, the 6-foot-4 Cain has picked up a relatively new scholarship offer from Belmont, which is located in Nashville, Tenn.

Congratulations @BlueCain1 on your Belmont offer. pic.twitter.com/DoovBgBSnE

The ‘Cuse coaching staff offered Cain this past February. He has other offers from his home-state team, Tennessee, along with South Carolina, Howard and ETSU.

As we noted in a recent column, Cain is also garnering interest from 2021 Final Four participant UCLA, Missouri and fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia Tech.

Axe: When will Boeheim retire? Coach K’s exit plan ramps up big question (PS; $; Axe)

It didn’t happen when Jim Boeheim turned 65, 70 or 75-years-old.

It didn’t happen when the longest-tenured coach in college basketball got to 900, 950, 1,000 and then back below 1,000 career wins.

It didn’t happen after two NCAA Investigations or when the Hall of Famer had a deadline to step aside for Mike Hopkins, former coach-in-waiting, in 2018. Hopkins went to the University of Washington in 2017, giving Boeheim what seems to be an extension-for-life at Syracuse.

“A lot of coaches said, ‘You don’t want to go there because he won’t be coaching there,’’' Boeheim said of the appointed retirement at the end of the 2017-18 season. “And all those coaches are gone. They’re all gone.’'

It didn’t happen when cancer or a tragic accident that took a man’s life struck. It didn’t happen when longtime assistant coach Bernie Fine had to step down in a cloud of controversy.

It didn’t happen when his kids got older. That actually had the opposite effect as Boeheim will get to coach his sons, Jimmy and Buddy, during the upcoming 2021-22 college basketball season.

The debate of when Boeheim, faithfully on the job as Syracuse University men’s basketball coach since it cost $2.16 to see All the President’s Men at a movie theater, will finally step down is the eternal flame of Syracuse sports discussions.

Jon Scheyer Named Next Head Coach of Duke Basketball (SI; McAllister)

Duke assistant Jon Scheyer will replace Nine Krzyzewski as head coach following the 2021-22 season, according to multiple reports. Scheyer will be the 20th head coach in Duke basketball history. Scheyer has been an assistant at Duke since 2014, and the associate head coach since 2018. He played for the Blue Devils from 2006 to 2010. The news comes hours after reports that Krzyzewski will retire after the upcoming season.

Krzyzewski is NCAA men’s basketball’s all-time leader in wins with 1,170. He has 97 NCAA Tournament wins, 12 Final Fours and five National Championships. Coach K also has won 12 ACC Championships. He took over the Duke program in 1980 after six years as the Army head coach and two years as an assistant with Indiana. Krzyzewski was a three time Naismith College Coach of the Year, one time NABC Coach of the Year, one time Clair Bee Coach of the Year, one time UPI Coach of the Year and five time ACC Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.

Who will be the next ACC MBB coach to retire? (RX; HM)

Who will be the next ACC MBB coach to retire?

UNC's Roy Williams (70 years old) retired already.
Now, Duke's Coach "K" (74 years old) says he's calling it quits after this season.
That leaves three "old guy" coaches:

  • Jim Boeheim, Syracuse (76 years old)
  • Jim Larranaga, Miami (71 years old)
  • Leonard Hamilton, FSU (72 years old)
Boeheim is coaching his son, so I don't expect he'll retire until his boy (or boys) leave Syracuse... but he can't keep going forever.

Leonard Hamilton could pass for 52; if he's as healthy as he looks, and the way he's been winning in recent years, he can coach as long as he wants.

That leaves Jim Larranaga as my guess for next ACC basketball coach to retire. Coaching the Hurricanes these last few years can't have been all that much fun (losing records the last three seasons).
One thing's for sure: ACC basketball is undergoing some major changes in coaching. It may not be recognizable in a few more years. Will it still be the premiere men's basketball league? (Is it now?)

Shoppers dine in the food court at Destiny USA in November.Katrina Tulloch | ktulloch@syracuse.com

New restaurant opens in Destiny USA food court (PS; $; Tampone)

Sake Japan is now open in Destiny USA’s food court.

It’s located in space next to Arby’s. The spot was previously occupied by Boston Market, which closed in 2019.

Sake Japan’s menu includes hibachi, teriyaki, bento, and ramen. Destiny announced the restaurant as a tenant in October.

The mall has been suffering in recent months under a debt load that’s far higher than the property is worth, according to its most recent appraisal. Pyramid Management, Destiny’s owner, notified Syracuse government leaders recently that it has hired counsel to explore restructuring the debt.
