Welcome to Flag Day!
Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which took place on June 14, 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson made a proclamation establishing June 14th as Flag Day. In August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an act of Congress, which was signed by Harry Truman. However, Flag Day is not an official federal holiday. Before the government recognized Flag Day, citizens had been celebrating it and working to bring it to prominence for many years. Bernard J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher from Waubeka, Wisconsin, held the first formal observance of "Flag Day", or "Flag Birthday", at Stony Hill School in 1885. Cigrand continued to advocate for Flag Day and became the president of the American Flag Day Association and the National Flag Day Society. Cigrand is usually described as the "Father of Flag Day". On June 14, 1894, over 300,000 public school students celebrated Flag Day in parks across Chicago. In the 1890's, observances took place in other cities such as New York City and Philadelphia. Currently, the week of June 14th is known as "National Flag Week", and the president makes a proclamation urging people to fly flags for its duration. Flags are flown on government buildings as well.

Could Jesse Edwards be An X-Factor for Syracuse? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)
When Syracuse faded out of the NCAA Tournament with a loss to Houston back on March 27th, the immediate reactions for Syracuse fans were that of disappointment quickly followed by hopefulness for 2022. And why not? At the time, the prospect of possibly returning all five starters and a rising star in Kadary Richmond had SU fans licking their collective chops after a few stressful years of bubble watch.
Needless to say, a lot has changed since that day. The Orange have lost a bunch of players to transfers, including but not limited to Richmond (Seton Hall) and established starters in forwards Quincy Guerrier (Oregon) and Alan Griffin (NBA draft). The losses of intriguing freshman Woody Newton to Oklahoma State and senior Marek Dolezaj to graduation certainly didn’t help matters.
The massive turnover has left Syracuse with a mishmash group of new plug-and-play transfers and dimmed prospects in the ACC, even with a suddenly scrambling UNC and a Duke team dealing with a Coach K farewell-tour distraction.
It also places more importance on the guys who return. Specifically, the time might be ripe for a lanky Dutch center to see more minutes and chances to contribute: Jesse Edwards.
Going back to the Houston game (and really the entire NCAA tournament), Edwards performed admirably in limited time at the five. Across three games in Indianapolis, Edwards played 42 minutes and tallied seven points and 13 boards along with three blocks. It’s no coincidence that the Syracuse zone suffocated San Diego State and West Virginia in the first two games with Edwards relieving the versatile-but-bruised Marek Dolezaj.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Kyle Filipowski big piece toward 2nd NCAA title (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball high-priority target Kyle Filipowski made an official visit to the Hill on June 5-6, and he has said in several interviews that the trip went well.
The 2022 four-star power forward, though, has numerous more visits planned for June, and competition for the 6-foot-10 Filipowski is fierce.
Does the Orange have a shot at landing him? Absolutely. But nothing is a guarantee in the recruiting world, particularly when the ‘Cuse is up against squads such as Duke, Connecticut, Ohio State, Iowa and many other high-major programs.
Filipowski, an exquisite big man in his class, is a junior at the Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Wilbraham, Mass., and he suits up for the New York City-based NY Renaissance in AAU competitions. He was recently named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Massachusetts for an outstanding 2020-21 campaign.
What I found particularly interesting is that Filipowski discussed the possibility of Syracuse basketball capturing another national championship if he were to choose the ‘Cuse.
In interviews with college basketball insider Adam Zagoria and SyracuseOnSI publisher Mike McAllister, Filipowski detailed how his recent visit to Central New York went, and what head coach Jim Boeheim and the rest of the Orange coaching staff said to the 2022 prospect about the team’s aspirations in the coming years.

Elite 2022 prospect Zion Cruz, who received a scholarship offer from Syracuse basketball back in August of 2019, said in a recent interview that he would like to announce his collegiate destination in the coming months.
And, at least for now, it appears that he has a team in mind as the front-runner to land him. The 6-foot-5 Cruz, a stellar combo guard and a junior at The Patrick School in Hillside, N.J., recently took an official visit to Auburn.
Syracuse Basketball: 5-star wing joins 4-star Kamari Lands at Prolific Prep (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball 2022 four-star commit Kamari Lands and his teammates at Prolific Prep in Napa Valley, Calif., are poised for a monster upcoming campaign.
The 6-foot-8 Lands is a key piece to the Prolific Prep roster, and an early pre-season top-25 poll from MaxPreps has Prolific Prep placed at No. 5 around the country. That pre-season ranking might ultimately end up climbing even higher, though.
Lands and his Prolific Prep squad are welcoming a new addition to the line-up, and it’s a massive one. MJ Rice, a five-star wing in the 2022 class, recently said on Twitter that he is transferring to Prolific Prep for his senior year. Wow.
The 6-foot-5 Rice, an elite shooting guard/small forward in this cycle, will come on board at Prolific Prep by way of another prep-school powerhouse, the Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va.
Syracuse basketball pledge Kamari Lands has a five-star player joining him at Prolific Prep.
According to a piece by Jason Jordan, the director of basketball recruiting for Sports Illustrated, Rice tallied 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists per contest during his most recent term for the Oak Hill Academy. MaxPreps named Rice to its junior All-America third team in the 2020-21 stanza.
Per Jordan, Rice also performed quite well on the AAU spring circuit with the North Carolina-based Team Loaded NC, when he averaged 25 points a game.

Syracuse Basketball: Top 2021 transfers include several with Orange ties (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball, so far this off-season, has seen multiple players transfer out of the program, as well as several transfer in, part of the sport’s free-agency explosion resulting from the NCAA’s new transfer policy.
According to an abundance of media reports, more than 1,000 college basketball players have entered into the transfer portal, brought on at least in part by the NCAA allowing student-athletes in all sports to transfer once while still retaining immediate eligibility.
It’s a seismic shift for college basketball, and one that isn’t likely to go away. In any event, CBS Sports writer David Cobb has published a piece that ranks the top-85 transfers in the 2021 recruiting cycle, and we’re taking a look at those who made the cut and have a connection to the ‘Cuse.
Check out which current and former Syracuse basketball players are among the top transfers.
Highest on the list, at No. 20, is sophomore forward Quincy Guerrier, who recently said that he would move to Pac-12 Conference member Oregon while continuing to test the NBA Draft waters.
Guerrier, a season ago, was named to the All-ACC third team. We recently put together a column about why he elected to transfer from the Orange to Oregon.
Following Guerrier, at No. 28, is freshman combo guard Kadary Richmond, who has departed the Hill to join former Big East Conference rival Seton Hall.
A four-star, top-100 prospect coming out of prep school, Richmond received solid minutes as a freshman in Central New York. He displayed tremendous defensive instincts as well as a strong ability to facilitate on offense and drive to the basket with precision.

4-star CG Jayden Epps visits NC State - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)
Initially a Providence commit, 4-star combo guard Jayden Epps quickly became a top target after re-opening his recruitment. 247 Sports ranks Epps — who plays his prep ball for Suffolk (Va.) King’s Fork — the No. 60 prospect in the 2022 class.
Epps committed to Providence in March 2021; however, two months later he decommitted. In the coming weeks, the 6-foot-2 Epps received offers from NC State, Illinois, Kansas and UConn.
During the month of June, Epps will take several official visits; that process started this weekend at NC State.
The visit to Raleigh is the first of three officials on the docket this month for Epps, who will also visit UConn (June 21) and Kansas (June 28.)
Currently, NC State has no commitments in its 2022 recruiting class.
Earlier this offseason, the Wolfpack added Providence transfer forward Greg Gantt to their roster. Gantt played at Providence for two seasons (2019-21).
Other ACC programs, like Pitt and UNC, have also contacted Epps.

First Look: New restaurant at ski resort offers ‘Modern American’ food with a breathtaking view (PS; $; Miller)
The view alone at Heuga’s Alpine restaurant is worth the price of the meal. It’s hard to believe this chunk of paradise is just 25 to 30 minutes away from Syracuse.
Heuga’s Alpine in Tully, a restaurant that sits at the foot of the Song Mountain ski resort, opened two weeks ago. The lodge-like building overlooks the eastern hills of Onondaga County.
“It’s such a beautiful drive,” general manager Tyler Dunlap said. “I come in from Skaneateles, and I have employees driving from Syracuse and even Auburn. We all say it’s the most beautiful commute you can ask for. And when we finally get here, the view that surrounds us is even better.”
The rustic dining room can seat 162 customers, and the surrounding patio can accommodate an additional 82. Each seat comes with a spectacular view. The patio got its first workout last weekend when customers chose to take their food and drinks outside near the firepit and enjoy live music. It was so popular that Tyler has booked a different band each weekend throughout the summer. (The Vectors, a local classic rock band, are playing Friday at 7:30 p.m.)
