Smile and say cheese, it's National Camera Day! Today we celebrate cameras and the photographs they capture, which contain beauty and memories from our lives. Prior to the camera's emergence, people relied on written descriptions, drawings, and paintings, and accounts of events were often made long after they took place. Cameras made it possible to reproduce events in the moment, as they were, and photographs were easy to take and make copies of.
The camera obscura came before the camera. Used by the ancient Greek and Chinese, it was similar to a pinhole camera and projected an image that could be traced. The first real photograph was taken in the mid-1810s by Nicéphore Niépce, who used paper coated with silver chloride to make it. This photograph wasn't permanent, however, but Niépce created a more lasting one in the mid-1820s, using a wooden box camera made by Charles and Vincent Chevalier. Niépce began working with Louis Daguerre on a new photographic camera but passed away in 1833 before it was completed. By 1837, Daguerre had created a new, sharp-image photograph, which became known as a daguerreotype.
More efficient cameras made by others followed, that used dry and wet plates and twin reflex lenses—with shortened exposure times and faster shutters—and that were smaller and more portable. In 1885, George Eastman, who had recently founded Kodak, debuted film cameras. Originally made with chemically coated paper, film started being made with celluloid in 1889. Kodak's small "Brownie Box" began being sold on a large scale in 1900 and was popular into the 1960s.

Taylor finds perfect fit with Syracuse basketball (cbs19news.com; Stein)
As the No. 3 prospect out of the state of Virginia, St. Anne's-Belfield senior Justin Taylor gained a lot of interest during his recruitment process, ultimately committing to Syracuse.
Taylor has not played a full high school basketball season in 18 months, as the Saints did not play his junior year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the interest was there, Taylor spent much of his recruitment process speaking with coaches on Zoom and sending his highlight tape.
"It definitely changed the recruiting process because a lot of those schools would be coming to the games during the season and they'd be able to watch me more," said St. Anne's-Belfield senior forward Justin Taylor. "A lot of them was them watching film from last year with AAU so they weren't able to watch me during the high school season which was difficult. Usually I would go down for a basketball game during the season. I wasn't able to take those normal visits but I was obviously fortunate enough to take some officials in the beginning of the summer so that was huge but it definitely did chance the recruiting process but it still worked out in my favor."

ESPN recruiting experts offer their analysis of Syracuse commit Justin Taylor (PS; $; Waters)
Justin Taylor is a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, a highly-regarded prospect in the 2022 recruiting class and the newest member of the Syracuse basketball program.
On Saturday, Taylor announced his decision to commit to Syracuse.
But just what kind of player is Syracuse getting in Taylor?
Adam Finkelstein, an ESPN host and recruiting analyst for Scout, provided an answer.
“They are getting a big wing who’s got not just solid positional size, but a strong, college-ready frame,’' Finkelstein said. “He’s best known for his ability to shoot the ball. He’s a little bit of a throwback in that he likes to come off screens. He’s got a very high release so he can get his shot off with very little separation.’'
Shooting might be Taylor’s main strength and calling card, but he’s more than just a one-dimensional player, according to ESPN’s national recruiting director Paul Biancardi.
“He’s labeled as a shooter, but I think he’s more than that,’' Biancardi said. “He does make shots. He understands where to get his shot off, which is so important in a half-court set when a defense is locked in. He works off screens and moves without the ball.
“But he’s a good passer in terms of feeding the post and keeping the ball moving and finding the open man,’' Biancardi added. “He can get on the glass. He can rebound. It’s not his strong suit, but it’s a contribution.

USA Basketball’s Jerry Colangelo on Jerami Grant’s role with Olympic team: ‘He fits in like a glove’ (PS; $; Waters)
In putting together the USA Basketball team’s roster for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, versatility was one of the most important traits that Jerry Colangelo was looking for.
Colangelo saw that versatility in Jerami Grant.
Grant, the former Syracuse University forward, was on the 12-man roster that was officially announced by USA Basketball on Monday. Colangelo spoke to reporters via Zoom a few hours after the roster was revealed.
“Versatility is the key,’' Colangelo, the managing director of the USA National team, said regarding Grant’s addition to the roster. “I think that’s a trademark of this group. Players who can play a couple of positions; some of them even three positions. I think he fits in just like a glove. I think we will have a lot of depth on this team because of that versatility.’'
Grant, a 6-foot-8 forward, is coming off his best season since entering the NBA as a second-round pick in the 2014 draft. He averaged 22.3 points and 4.6 rebounds this past season with the Detroit Pistons.

Indiana to play at Syracuse in ACC/Big Ten Challenge (247sports.com; Pegram)
Mike Woodson's first ACC/Big Ten Challenge match-up as Hoosier head coach is one rich in tradition.
Indiana will be traveling to take on Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. The game is set for Tuesday, November 30.
Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim is headed to his 45th year as head coach in Syracuse and his 52nd year as a member of the staff in some capacity.
The Orange are coming off an 18-10 record and an NCAA tournament that saw the team advance to the Sweet 16 before falling to Houston, 62-46.
This will be the second time these two schools have met in the event. In 2013 in a game played at Syracuse just months after the Hoosiers were upset by the Orange in the Sweet 16, Syracuse defeated Indiana, 69-52.
That was the last meeting between the schools and the fifth straight win over Indiana for Syracuse.
Indiana's only victory over Syracuse came in the NCAA title game of 1987.
IU is 8-12 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge after falling 69-67 in overtime at Florida State last year. The Hoosiers have played a nationally-ranked foe in the event for six straight seasons and eight of the last nine campaigns. Indiana will be looking for their first road win in the series since winning at NC State in 2011.

Syracuse Basketball: For 2022 PGs, may boil down to who commits first (itlh; Adler)
I am really fascinated by the point-guard situation as it relates to the three Syracuse basketball targets in the 2022 class.
What I mean by that is, I think that the Orange has at least a decent chance to land any one of them, although I wouldn’t necessarily consider the ‘Cuse the clear-cut favorite for four-stars Quadir Copeland, J.J. Starling or Chance Westry.
In part, that’s because these high-school juniors could have a bit of a way to go in their recruiting processes. All three are elite point guards in this cycle, and all three of them possess a multitude of impressive high-major offers.
I do think that it’s likely the Orange will secure the services of one of them, although you never know with this recruiting stuff. The ‘Cuse could certainly swing and miss on all three. That would sting.
Syracuse basketball is in the running for three excellent 2022 point guards.
Ultimately, the point-guard issue for the Orange in this class may come down to which prospect commits first. I know, that sounds simplistic and obvious. I get it.But hear me out. All three are four-star players. All three have taken an official visit to the Hill. Starling and Westry are generally considered top-50 guys, while Copeland is moving on up in the national rankings for this cycle.

Orange Watch: Syracuse basketball's history with 2021 ‘Battle 4 Atlantis’ participants - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)
Item: Monday’s announcement that Syracuse will host Indiana November 30 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, continues to firm up the 2021-22 Orange basketball schedule. Likely games against longtime upstate rivals Colgate and Cornell, will complete the previously announced nine other non-conference matchups to add to the 20 ACC games. The week prior to meeting the Hoosiers (Thanksgiving Week), SU will have finished its three games in the 10th rendition of the Battle 4 Atlantis on beautiful Paradise Island in the Bahamas, against programs it knows well.
It’s viewed as one of the most challenging early-season tournaments in college hoops; 12 games played over three days in the intimate atmosphere of the converted Imperial Ballroom inside the Atlantis resort’s humongous Royal Towers.
The ‘Cuse has met all seven other 2021 contestants in previous games, with four of those prior contests occurring in the NCAA Tournament.
Here’s a look back (in alphabetical order) at Syracuse’s most recent games against each of the other 2021 Battle for Atlantis participants (year played in parentheses):
- Arizona State (2018)-For the first time in its rich NCAA Tournament history, Syracuse, the last team selected to the field, had to play in the First Four in Dayton, drawing the Pac 12’s Sun Devils. SU rallied from seven down with 7:00 to play to post a 60-56 upset led by Oshae Brissett’s 23-point, 12-rebound performance.
- Auburn (2003)-Who can ever forget the closest margin of victory in the six wins on route to the national title was the 79-78 squeaker over the Tigers in the Sweet 16 at Albany? The final margin came after an Auburn three-pointer with 0:02 left in regulation cut the lead to one. Eventual tournament MOP Carmelo Anthony had 18-points, and Josh Pace had 14-points off the bench.
- Baylor (2019)-If SU meets Baylor and Connecticut (see below) in the Bahamas, the Orange will amazingly dual the last eight national champions (and 11-of-13) on this year’s schedule. Think about that agenda. The now defending national titlist Bears hammered the SU zone with 16 3-pointers on route to a 78-69 win in Salt Lake City, in an 8/9 game in the NCAA tournament.
- Connecticut (2018)-The former Big East rivals have played 95 times, but the last meeting still stings. SU was ranked 15th going into the 2K Classic game at Madison Square Garden early in the 2018-19 season, but poor shooting (SU missed 40 of its 66 shots), including going just 6-for-22 from beyond the arc, did in the Orange. Tyus Battle led Syracuse with 16-points.
Syracuse Basketball: Several blue-bloods in mix for 5-star Zion Cruz (itlh; Adler)
Five-star prospect Zion Cruz, who received a scholarship offer from Syracuse basketball nearly two years ago, has been playing well on the AAU circuit and in other events of late, and his recruitment is picking up steam, according to media reports and comments from national analysts.
The 2022 combo guard, one of the top players at his position within this recruiting cycle, took an official visit to Southeastern Conference member Auburn at the beginning of June, and he had plenty of positive things to say about the Tigers.
The 6-foot-5 Cruz, a junior at The Patrick School in Hillside, N.J., also apparently took a trip to Oregon out of the Pac-12 Conference in mid-June, per his bio on the 247Sports Web site.
Cruz, who runs on the AAU circuit with the Bronx, N.Y.-based PSA Cardinals, doesn’t currently have any predictions from recruiting insiders about a projected collegiate destination.
The majority of recruiting services rank him as five stars and a top-20 prospect overall within the 2022 class. Cruz holds a slew of high-major offers, from teams such as Florida State, Baylor, Illinois, Ohio State, Iowa, Alabama, UCLA, Connecticut, Louisville, Maryland, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Indiana.
Syracuse basketball prospect Zion Cruz has a few teams in hot pursuit.
It definitely looks like Auburn has some nice buzz regarding Cruz, who has said that he wants to make a decision by the end of the summer.
College basketball insider Adam Zagoria, in a recent article, said that Cruz “remains open in his recruitment but a handful of schools appear to be focusing in on him.”

ACC Question Marks: Syracuse Recruiting (DBR; King)
King should know Syracuse has the 4th ranked class in the country for 2022.
Syracuse basketball has had a weird stretch for the last decade or so. Let’s start with the Bernie Fine scandal, in which Fine was accused of sexually abusing young boys.
We should say first that the feds ultimately decided not to charge Fine but there was a tape where his wife allegedly said she was aware of his behavior but didn’t know how to stop it.
That got him fired.
Then allegations that his wife and another assistant coach’s wife were having sex with players came out.
We still don’t know how much of this is true but there’s no question that it was damaging to the program.
In 2013, the Orange left the Big East and joined the ACC to accommodate football, which had no natural place in the Big East, a league built around and dedicated to basketball in major northern media markets.
Then in 2015, the NCAA stripped 101 wins from Syracuse and under some pressure, Boeheim announced he would retire in 2018, and Mike Hopkins was appointed coach-in-waiting.
But Boeheim changed his mind after the pressure eased up and is of course still coaching. Hopkins is now coaching at Washington with mixed success.
The NCAA also mandated reduced scholarships in 2015, just as the ‘Case was learning to recruit against Duke, UNC and increasingly, Virginia.
This article suggests that Syracuse is now past the worst of the recruiting problems caused by its NCAA issues and is now back to getting big-timers.

Raw bar, cocktails star on visit to The York in Armory Square (Dining Out Review) (PS; $; Paventi)
Sunlight washed over the patio behind The York, tucked in an alleyway connecting the building on West Fayette Street with Walton Street. The high walls of the structures around it prevented cutoff diners from the consistently hectic bustle of Armory Square. The gentlest of breezes kept the air moving for the collection of nine tables and a booth with an outdoor couch. Our recent Thursday evening visit during happy hour found a mix of after-work revelers and groups out for dinner.
The York is an upscale dining experience like you might find in Manhattan. The menu is best described as modern American, with a raw bar, dry-aged steaks, trendy starters and entrées and a lengthy cocktail list.
The York pours most of its house drinks with a single-barrel Patrón-brand añejo tequila selected for the restaurant, a nice touch elevating the house margarita ($15) from ubiquity to a potent, tart refresher. Served on the rocks and available with Meyer lemon, blood orange or lime juice, The York Margarita delivered quite a bit of punch in each sip. The Pep Talk ($16) is also made with the Patrón añejo, blending bright tropical flavors of mango and passionfruit with a dash of tajin, the Mexican chili spice.
