Welcome to World Snake Day!

Celebrated by snake and wildlife enthusiasts, World Snake Day raises awareness about snakes and educates the public about them; it dispels fears and misconceptions about them and enlightens the public on how they should be dealt with. A focus is often put on conservation, which is valuable because snakes face habitat loss on account of development, and there are around 100 species that are listed as endangered by the IUCN Red List. Events, such as snake awareness programs, are held at zoos and museums and organized by NGOs on the day.

There are more than 3,000 snake species, and snakes can be found on every continent except Antarctica. They live in most countries, although they aren't found on a few island countries like Iceland, Ireland, and New Zealand, or on the autonomous island territory of Greenland. Snakes live in almost any environment: in forests, grasslands, deserts, savannas, swamps, and mountain regions. About 70 species of sea snakes even live in water, being found in the Indian and Pacific oceans. The largest snake is the reticulated python, which may reach over 30 feet in length; the smallest is the threadsnake, which is less than four inches long.

Get to Know New Syracuse Offeree Peter Carey (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse basketball offered 2022 big Peter Carey on Thursday. It was just his second high major offer (the other was from Rutgers), with both coming over the last month. That begs the question, how has he been this under the radar? New York Lightning coach Jesse Shapiro says he has blossomed over the last few months.

"Peter's a good kid," Shapiro said. "He could've easily gone off and played with EYBL team after about a month and a half ago. He just stuck with the process. It all started with New England Jam Fest in late May. A lot of sneaker teams were there and he just went off. Doing stuff he's never done before. I think it comes with mental toughness and trusting the process. Being at Northfield is huge for anybody doing what he's doing. Like I said, we beat two sneaker teams to win the whole thing. He dominated a top 60 kid. That's really when it all started. The following weekend, we went down to Boo Williams for Southern Jam Fest by Hoop Group. There were so many media outlets there and coaches and important people. He did it again, three straight games. Boo Williams is a legend in my eyes. He's been doing this the longest. He pointed him out to some people. Some people are still in this for the right reasons. We played Team Takeover and Keith Stevens. They whooped us pretty good but even he said after the game, 'you have a high major kid on your hands.'

D.J. Kennedy: Former St. John’s star, TBT superstar explains why he’s playing for Boeheim’s Army (PS; $; Ditota)

The way D.J. Kennedy viewed it, trying to piece together an Overseas Elite team to compete in The Basketball Tournament this summer seemed like an end-of-the-line proposition.

The team, which had won four straight TBTs and collected $7 million in prize money over that period, had grown older. Some guys had families, another was getting married. To throw together a basketball roster at the last minute simply to field a team seemed disrespectful to the Overseas Elite brand.

“I don’t think people really understand the process. It starts months in advance and I think we didn’t want to put just any team together,” he said. “We thought it just best to leave it there and if guys still wanted to play, we’d look elsewhere. That’s pretty much what happened as far as this situation.”

US-Australia basketball game canceled due to health and safety protocols (AP)

The United States’ men’s basketball exhibition game against Australia scheduled for Friday night in Las Vegas has been canceled because of health and safety protocols.

USA Basketball cited “an abundance of caution” in making the decision Thursday night. The U.S. women’s game against Australia will be played as scheduled Friday in Las Vegas.

The decision to cancel the game came hours after Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal was ruled out of the Olympics after being placed into health and safety protocols. The team also said Detroit Pistons forward Jerami Grant also was in health and safety protocols “out of an abundance of caution.”

The Americans are still scheduled to play Spain on Sunday before heading to Tokyo, with their opening game against France set for July 25.

The U.S. lost its opening two exhibition games to Nigeria and Australia and beat Argentina in the third Tuesday night.

Syracuse basketball has interest in one of 2022’s best long-range shooters (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball recently landed an elite 2022 shooting guard in four-star Justin Taylor and continues to pursue several four-star point guards in that class, yet the Orange is showing interest in another stellar guard within this cycle.

According to several media reports, the ‘Cuse coaching staff has displayed interest in the talented and under-rated 2022 guard Denver Anglin, whose stock is on the rise, national recruiting analysts say.

The 6-foot-2 Anglin is listed as either a point guard or combo guard, depending on the recruiting Web site. He is a junior at the Gill St. Bernard’s School in Gladstone, N.J., and runs on the AAU circuit with the New York City-based NY Renaissance.

By the way, other members of this AAU group include Syracuse basketball 2022 four-star targets Kyle Filipowski and Chance Westry, as well as former 2022 four-star prospect Roddy Gayle Jr., who has committed to Ohio State.

How Syracuse Targets Performed Thursday in the EYBL (SI; McAllister)

Several Syracuse basketball recruiting targets took the floor on Thursday for their respective AAU teams in the Nike EYBL. This includes Orange commits, targets with offers and others on the radar that do not currently hold an offer. The table below shows how they performed. Syracuse Basketball: Ideal candidates to fill the last non-conference game (itlh; Adler)

By my count, Syracuse basketball has 10 non-conference opponents lined up for the upcoming campaign, although not all of these match-ups have gotten officially announced by the Orange athletics department.

The ‘Cuse said via press release earlier this week that it would host long-time Central New York foe Colgate on Saturday, Nov. 20, from the Carrier Dome.

The Raiders were terrific a season ago, posting a 14-2 overall mark and reaching the Big Dance. All-time, the Orange is 127-45 against Colgate, and Syracuse basketball has defeated this Patriot League squad on 54 consecutive occasions, per cuse.com.

The Orange is expected to play 11 non-conference games in the 2021-22 term. So far, the team has battles versus Colgate, Drexel, Lafayette, Lehigh, Indiana in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, Georgetown in our nation’s capital, Villanova in New York City, and three duels in the 2021 Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis.

That leaves one non-conference encounter remaining. Media reports have suggested this duel will end up being Cornell. But which team would you like the ‘Cuse to face? We have some ideas.

Here are some fun choices for the final Syracuse basketball non-conference opponent.

First and foremost, even though the Huskies struggled a stanza ago, it would prove nice to have the Orange square off versus Mike Hopkins-led Washington.

A juvenile red-tailed hawk that was injured on the Syracuse University campus by flying into a window is released back into the wild at nearby Oakwood Cemetery. The bird's cage was opened by Tripti Bhattacharya, right, an SU professor who initially found the hurting bird. Wildlife Rehabilitator Cindy Page, of Manlius, is also pictured.

‘One lucky bird’: Hurting, juvenile red-tailed hawk healed, then released near SU campus (PS; $; Figura)

Sometimes bad things happen after a young bird leaves its nest. Sometimes, though, there can be a happy ending when humans intervene.

That was the case when a young red-tailed hawk, injured 10 days ago after it apparently flew into a window of a building on the Syracuse University campus, was released back into the wild at the nearby Oakwood Cemetery.

The male bird, named Ayla, was the first hatched of two chicks in the red-tailed hawk nest on Lyman Hall on the SU campus, which is under constant observation courtesy of nest cam. It fledged (flew out of nest) on June 16 at 50 days of age.

On July 5, though, it was spotted by a Syracuse University professor hopping around the ground, unable to take flight in front of the Heroy Geology Lab building. It was later determined it had flown into a low-level window on the building, hurting itself.
