Welcome to National Flitch Day!

A flitch is a measurement for bacon. It is half or one side of a pig and is now known as a slab in the United States. Flitch Day is based on and dedicated to an old English custom which goes back to at least the thirteenth or fourteenth century, and by some accounts to 1104. The custom was also mentioned in Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, which was published in the late fourteenth century.

The custom mainly took place in two locations: Whichnoure (now Wychnor Hall), Staffordshire, and Little Dunmow in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. In Little Dunmow, married couples would prove that neither one of them had had any thoughts over the previous year and a day in which they wished that they hadn't been married. The couple would kneel in the churchyard on two hard, pointed stones while taking an oath in front of monks and the rest of the town. If it was believed that they hadn't had any thoughts of regret, they were given a flitch of bacon and were paraded around town. It was quite rare for a couple to actually be given a slab of bacon. The custom lasted until the mid-eighteenth century. It was also brought to America by English colonists but was not long practiced there.

ITLH Big East Power Rankings: Week 1 Adler)

Syracuse basketball missed out on 2022 four-star center Donovan Clingan, a high-priority target who recently committed to Connecticut.

Another high-priority prospect in this class, 2022 four-star power forward Kyle Filipowski, is getting all kinds of buzz for Duke as it pertains to his recruitment.

If the Orange doesn’t win the recruiting sweepstakes for Filipowski, though, the team does have other big men that it is pursuing in the 2022 cycle.

For example, the ‘Cuse recently doled out a scholarship offer to Peter Carey, an under-rated and really talented 2022 prospect who can play power forward and center. The 7-foot Carey revealed the Syracuse basketball offer via his Twitter page.

I’m extremely honored to have received an offer from HC Jim Boeheim and Syracuse University! #acc pic.twitter.com/hWXnDBywue
— Peter Carey (@Petercareyy) July 15, 2021

As we’ve noted in other recent columns, the Orange has also reportedly displayed interest in 2022 big men Christ Essandoko and Duke Brennan.

The 7-foot Essandoko attends the Winston Salem Christian School in Winston-Salem, N.C., while the 6-foot-10 Brennan is out of Hillcrest Prep in Gilbert, Ariz.

For now, though, I get the sense that, beyond Filipowski, Carey is the top priority for the ‘Cuse, rather than other guys such as Brennan and Essandoko.

Syracuse basketball, despite critics, has proven solid in recent years (itlh; Adler)

A large contingent of Syracuse basketball fans has often lamented about the state of the program in recent seasons, including both the team’s performance on the court as well as the squad’s recruiting efforts.

I recently outlined how I believe that the Orange’s recruiting is trending in a terrific direction. As to how the team has fared in actual games, well, there’s no denying that the ‘Cuse has struggled through some regular seasons since leaving the Big East Conference for the Atlantic Coast Conference in the 2013-14 campaign.

However, it’s not as bad as some people might think, at least from my perspective. FOX College Hoops recently put out an interesting tweet where it looked at ACC groups and how they stack up in terms of their records over the past 10 years.

According to this tweet, Syracuse basketball is No. 5 overall within the league, and that’s pretty darn good, if you ask me. Ahead of the Orange, in order, are Virginia, Duke, Louisville and North Carolina. Directly behind the ‘Cuse is Florida State.

It's a tight race, but @UVAMensHoops has the best win pct. in the last 10 years among @theACC teams pic.twitter.com/mulAbXz7xF
— FOX College Hoops (@CBBonFOX) July 12, 2021

Now, in all fairness, these records are a little skewed, since teams including Syracuse basketball and others have suited up in more than one conference dating back the last decade.

We also live in a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately society, and it’s true that over the past handful of stanzas, the Orange has produced so-so regular seasons, although the ‘Cuse has shined in March Madness.

Syracuse basketball has begun pursuit of 5-star guard, a top-10 prospect (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has offered a scholarship to another elite high-school player in the 2023 class.

According to a tweet from college basketball insider Adam Zagoria, the Orange has offered five-star combo guard Simeon Wilcher, who is a sophomore at Roselle Catholic High School in Roselle, N.J.

The 6-foot-4 Wilcher, who can suit up at point guard and shooting guard, runs on the AAU circuit with the New York City-based NY Renaissance. Other members of this AAU team include Syracuse basketball 2022 prospects Kyle Filipowski, Chance Westry and Denver Anglin.

The Orange’s offer to Wilcher comes not long after the ‘Cuse pledged a scholarship offer to another top-flight 2023 player, Justin Edwards.

.@Cuse_MBB is the latest to offer 2023 @rc_basketball and @NYRhoops G @SimeonWilcher https://t.co/ED5kxGLJEU
— Adam Zagoria (@AdamZagoria) July 17, 2021

The 6-foot-7 Edwards is a four-star forward who attends the Imhotep Institute Charter High School in Philadelphia and competes in AAU competitions with the Philadelphia-based Team Final.

Syracuse basketball has entered the recruiting fray for top-10 prospect Simeon Wilcher.

In reviewing Wilcher’s bio on recruiting Web sites, he already holds a bunch of impressive offers, from teams such as Ohio State, Oregon, Iowa, Kansas, Connecticut, Georgia Tech, St. John’s, Auburn, Illinois, Miami, UCLA, Wake Forest, Oklahoma State and Morgan State.

Is Kamari Lands Even More Dominant Than We Thought? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

The commitment of Kamari Lands in April set the course of Syracuse’s ’21 into smooth waters. Locking down a top 25 recruit took the pressure off chasing other elite prospects in the class, while giving the program a centerpiece that drew other players. Justin Taylor jumped on the SU wagon a few weeks ago, giving the Orange one of the best classes in the nation. Syracuse isn’t finished yet, still offering scholarships to other rising players, and hoping for even bigger commitments like Kyle Filipowski or Quadir Copeland.

But we’re seeing now that Lands might not only have played a pivotal role in the formation of the class, as well as depressurizing the summer. He might also be better than we thought. At the Peach Jam, perhaps the most notable AAU tournament of the summer, he has thoroughly showed out. Playing for the L.A.-based Team Why Not, Lands has stuffed the stat sheets. Against Mac Irvin Fire, Lands dropped 24 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Against E1T1 United he tallied 16 points and 8 boards. He then notched a double-double, going for 20 and 10 against Team Melo. Then in a matchup against the New Heights Lightning, finished with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

In the four games, Lands averaged 20 points and 7.5 rebounds against the best prep talent in the country. Jim Boeheim was on hand at Peach Jam, as well as the head coaches at Arizona State, Arkansas, Connecticut, Duke, Fresno State, George Mason, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, LSU, Maryland, Miami, Minnesota, and Rutgers, just to name a few.

Watch the new video simulation of I-81 as a community grid in Syracuse (PS; $; Knauss)

State transportation officials today released a video simulation that provides an overall visual sense of how a community grid would change Interstate 81 and downtown Syracuse.

The 5-minute promotional video takes the viewer on a simulated ride north on I-81 as it enters the city and reaches a new rotary planned at the junction of Martin Luther King East.

Then the simulation continues north on Almond Street, which would be transformed into a major boulevard. The video also shows plans for a new exit off Interstate 690 to Irving Avenue and Syracuse University, plus a variety of other changes proposed by transportation officials.

The video is based on plans in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement released today by the state Department of Transportation. State officials favor the community grid option. The environmental statement is now open to public comment.
