Welcome to World Tofu Day!

World Tofu Day was created by the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) Canada to offer an opportunity for people to celebrate plant-based diets and to encourage them to bring animal-friendly foods onto their menus. It celebrates the many alternatives to animal products "and the many advantages of living a cruelty-free lifestyle." It's also a day to get people to try tofu and to view it in a new way, "as a tasty, versatile food that can easily replace many animal-derived products to avoid encouraging the horrible farming industry." The first World Tofu Day was marked in 2014. In Montreal, at least 12,000 people attended a vegan barbecue on the inaugural celebration.

Tofu is made from soybeans that are curdled and then pressed into blocks. It is high in protein, relatively low in calories, and low in carbohydrates. It is low in saturated fat but higher in heart-healthy fats. Tofu contains iron, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and calcium, and is sometimes fortified with other minerals and vitamins. Tofu is versatile. It takes on the flavor of what it is cooked with, it can be used to make anything from the main dish to a dessert, and just like meat, it can be fried, grilled, steamed, baked, or pan-cooked. There are tofu curds, pressed tofu sheets, frozen tofu, and burgers and sausages made from tofu.

Tyrese Rice of Boeheim's Army reacts to a 3-point shot to extend the lead late in second half action during the first round game of The Basketball Tournament, Peoria Regional, Peoria Il. July 24, 2021 Photo by Daryl WilsonDaryl Wilson

Boeheim’s Army preps for game 2 of TBT: Tyrese Rice to the rescue, switch to man defense, more (PS; $; Ditota)

Tyrese Rice was 0-for-3 from the 3-point line to start Saturday’s Boeheim’s Army game. He committed three turnovers during a first-half stretch that ended with the Army trailing lower-seeded Forces of Seoul, 29-23. Boeheim’s Army managed a total of seven points in the second quarter.

Rice, a 6-foot-1 point guard who at 34 is one of Boeheim’s Army’s older, more experienced players, heard from his teammates at the half.

“I just told him to be yourself,” Boeheim’s Army forward DJ Kennedy said. “His presence, the leadership, just taking over the game. That’s what we expect. In the beginning, he was just feeling out, he wasn’t really being aggressive and you could tell it was kind of messing the team up. We need him to be aggressive. We know all the experience he has. He’s a veteran point guard. So we trust him. So once guys told him to just be yourself, he took over the game.”

Syracuse Basketball: Boeheim’s Army has prophetic new star, DJ Kennedy (itlh; Clark)

Boeheim’s Army, a team of primarily former Syracuse basketball players, won its first game after a huge fourth quarter.

DJ Kennedy, the new starting forward for Boeheim’s Army, a squad of mainly former Syracuse basketball stars, is described by ESPN commentator Seth Greenberg as the “LeBron James of the TBT.”

Maybe, but after Saturday’s, 65-53, first-round win for the predominantly Syracuse Orange alumni team over Forces of Seoul, I think a better comparison for Kennedy would be to Nostradamus.

That’s how prophetic Kennedy’s pre-game sideline interview was.

If you trusted his thoughts on what to expect in the game, you wouldn’t have even had to stick around to watch Saturday’s matchup in Illinois.

“The first game is the hardest, because guys haven’t been playing and it’s our first game together. It’s not going to be pretty, you just have to grind it out and figure out a way to win,” Kennedy said before the contest.

Things happened and checked out just like Kennedy said they would:

Check: It was hard, even though the Army came in heavily favored as a 3 seed vs. No. 14 Forces of Seoul, because there was a lot of rust. “There is no energy or flow offensively for Boeheim’s Army,” Greenberg said in the first half, when the Army had 8 turnovers and everyone not named Malachi Richardson was a combined 4-for-23 from the field.

Jerami Grant Does Not Play, Team USA Falls to France (SI; McAllister)

Former Syracuse star Jerami Grant did not make his Olympics debut on Sunday as he did not play for Team USA as the United States fell to France 83-76 in the first game of group play. The win by France gives them a big advantage for the rest of Group A.

USA led 74-67 in the fourth quarter, but France went on a 14-0 run to put the game away. Trailing 76-74, the United States had multiple wide open looks from three, but Kevin Durant, Jrue Holiday and others missed those looks.

France shot 46.8% from the floor to just 37.3% for the United States. France outrebounded the Americans 41-35. France was led by Evan Fournier, who finished with 28 points and four rebounds. Holiday led the United States with 18 points and seven rebounds. Kevin Durant was just 4-12 shooting and 1-6 from three point range to finish with 10 points. Jason Tatum had nine points on 3-9 shooting and just 1-5 from beyond the arc.

Syracuse Basketball: Boeheim’s Army must shake off rust, tough 2nd battle (itlh; Adler)

It’s understandable that Boeheim’s Army, the collection of former Syracuse basketball players and other stars, struggled a bit in its first contest of The Basketball Tournament (“TBT”), the $1 million, winner-take-all annual summer event.

The guys who make up the Boeheim’s Army line-up haven’t practiced together all that much, and it’s not so easy to automatically gel as a cohesive unit from the get-go.

Despite a roster loaded with talent and a ton of optimistic buzz heading into its TBT debut this past Saturday afternoon in the Peoria, Ill., region, the No. 3 seed Boeheim’s Army could not get going offensively for much of its encounter with No. 14 seed Forces of Seoul.

Just like the Orange has been known to do on occasion over the years, though, Boeheim’s Army sputtered for three quarters then put on the jets in the final period of competition.

In the fourth quarter, Boeheim’s Army absolutely crushed Forces of Seoul, to the tune of a 22-3 outburst. That turned a seven-point deficit into a 12-point victory, fueled in part by Boeheim’s Army switching from a zone to a man-to-man defense.

Who is Tyrese Rice, the Boeheim’s Army Hero of TBT Opener? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

Boeheim’s Army opened up TBT with a win over Forces of Seoul, and it was a non-Orange who led the way. Tyrese Rice lit up the first round with 20 points to lead the Army scoring, plus 5 assists and a rebound. Rice’s clutch shooting highlights were the lead. Leading 58-52 in the 4th quarter, Rice launched from deep, banking it off glass for the three. He tilted his head and threw out his hands after it went in. That crept Boeheim’s Army closer to the win as 63 was the target score. Then leading 62-53, Rice was left open in the corner and drilled another three, sealing the game, 65-53. The 3-seed Army heads into the next round against 11-seed Heartfire on Monday night at 6p ET.

Unlike in previous years, there’s fewer former Syracuse players on the squad. Chris McCullough and Tyler Lydon have finally made their TBT debuts, but Rice may end up being one of their biggest pickups. The former Boston College star is an overseas basketball legend. Two weeks ago, The Fizz ranked the non-SU soldiers competing for the Army this year, and even there Rice was overlooked coming in 4th. Here’s what we wrote:

“Tyrese Rice played at Boston College for all four of his collegiate seasons between 2005 and 2009. During that stretch, he won ACC All-Freshman honors, and All-ACC three times. But Rice might be oddly unfamiliar because he was doing all that while Syracuse was still in the Big East. The bottom line is he won’t be a go-to shooter or scorer for Boeheim’s Army, but Rice will hold his own. He has eight international seasons under his belt despite taking this year off. As a pro, Rice averages 12.0 and 4.1 assists per game. His biggest contribution will be as a srappy guy diving for loose balls and moving the ball well. That role belonged to Eric Devendorf in the past, and still might. To have multiple guys willing to sacrifice their bodies is a huge advantage. But Devendorf can’t be the leading scorer and the scrappiest player.” – The Fizz, 7/7/21

What to know about Boeheim's Army:

The roster features several former Syracuse basketball players, including Eric Devendorf, CJ Fair, Tyler Lydon, Chris McCullough, Malachi Richardson and Andrew White. Paschal Chukwu was supposed to be on the roster as well, but was unable to travel back into the United States due to travel restrictions related to the ongoing pandemic.

This year's roster features more non Syracuse alums than in any previous iteration of Boeheim's Army. They include Tyrese Rice, Keifer Sykes, DJ Kennedy and DeAndre Kane.

Rice is a point guard who played at Boston College from 2005-2009 and has played oversees ever since. He is a multiple time EuroLeague Champion, also won the Israeli League and has been an all-star at various stops. He stands 6-1, plays point guard and can really score. He was averaged 17.6 points and 5.4 assists as a sophomore, 21.0 points and 5.0 assists as a junior and 16.9 points and 5.4 assists as a senior. He was named to the All ACC Second Team as a sophomore and first team as a junior.

Syracuse Basketball: Blue-bloods likely to be front-runners for 5-star target (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball got into the mix early on for 2023 five-star prospect Elijah Fisher, offering a scholarship to the elite 6-foot-7 wing last summer.

The Orange has done well in recruiting high-level prospects from Canada in recent years. Fisher is a sophomore at the Crestwood Preparatory College in Toronto, Ontario, and runs on the AAU circuit with Grassroots Elite Canada, which is also based in Toronto.

In mid-June, college coaches could begin making direct contact with high-school prospects in the 2023 cycle. Fisher, in a recent article by 247Sports national analyst Dushawn London, dished on several collegiate teams for which he’s in frequent contact.

Some of the squads that Fisher mentioned are blue-blood groups Kentucky and Kansas, as well as Oklahoma State. Fisher recently picked up an offer from Kentucky, and he’s held a Kansas offer for more than a year.

I haven’t seen anything about an offer from Oklahoma State to Fisher under his bio on various recruiting Web sites, however, he could certainly possess an offer from the Cowboys.

Syracuse basketball faces heated competition for five-star prospect Elijah Fisher.

To date, I haven’t seen any predictions for Fisher from national analysts or other recruiting insiders. That being said, his recruiting process could have a way to go.

Developer files new plans for historic Temple Concord in Syracuse, in the face of criticism (photos) (PS; $; Moriarty)

A Georgia company has filed slightly scaled-back plans for a student housing project at the historic Temple Concord site near Syracuse University following criticism that its original plans were out of character with the neighborhood.

Landmark Properties, of Athens, withdrew plans for a 202-unit, 635-bed student housing development wrapped around the rear and southern side of the temple sanctuary at the southeast corner of University Avenue and Madison Street in January.

The move came after neighboring property owners, including the Sherbrooke Apartments and Madison Court Condominiums, criticized the project as too big and out of character with the neighborhood.

However, the company said it planned to file a new proposal that would address the criticisms. In April, it filed new plans with the Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals. Among the changes to the project, the new plans show a building of seven stories instead of eight, with the top floor now recessed back 10 feet where it faces the temple’s 110-year-old sanctuary.

As a result, the number of beds has been reduced from 635 to 599, though the number of apartments has increased slightly from 202 to 210 (with more one- and two-bedroom units and fewer units with more bedrooms).
