Welcome to Buffalo Soldiers Day!

Today we celebrate the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers and honor their place in American history. It was on July 28, 1866, with the passage of the Army Reorganization Act, that Congress created six army regiments of all-black soldiers, consisting of two cavalry units—the 9th and 10th Cavalry—and four infantry units—which were later consolidated into the 24th and 25th infantry units. They all eventually were known as Buffalo Soldiers.

The 9th and 10th Cavalry became two of most decorated units in US military history. The 9th was organized in Greenville, Louisiana. After training, the first place they were sent to was San Antonio, in April 1867. The 10th was organized in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and first took action in August 1867, when they were ordered to Fort Riley, Kansas, to protect the construction of the Pacific Railroad.

The 10th Cavalry was the first to be given the name Buffalo Soldiers, but that spread to the 9th as well, and then to the two infantry divisions. One story says that Cheyenne warriors gave them the name during a battle near Fort Hays, Kansas, in 1867, because they thought they fought as strong as buffaloes. Another story says the Cheyenne came up with the name, but not until 1877. Still another story says the Comanches came up with the name in 1871. Besides the theory that the name was given to them because of their toughness in battle, another theory says that Native Americans gave them the name because they had dark, curly hair like the fur of buffaloes. It could be they were given the name because of a combination of these reasons. Regardless of why they received the name, they took it as a badge of honor. Most believe it was a term of respect, although some do believe that it may have been an insult.

Jerami Grant Makes Olympics Debut, Team USA Blows Out Iran (SI; McAllister)

Former Syracuse star Jerami Grant made his Olympics debut on Wednesday when Team USA blew out Iran 120-66 to earn its first victory of the Tokyo Games. The United States lost to France in its previous game and needed a win to keep hopes alive of advancing to the medal rounds.

Grant scored four points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out two assists off the bench. It was the first time Grant has played in the Olympics during his basketball career as he did not play against France. Grant was 1-2 from the floor, including 1-1 from beyond the arc, and 1-2 from the free throw line.

Team USA was led by Damian Lillard, who scored 21 points on 7-13 shooting from three point range. He also had five assists. Devin Booker added 16 points while Jayson Tatum contributed 14 off the bench. The United States held Iran to just 37.3% shooting overall and forced 23 Iranian turnovers. The Americans assisted on 34 of its 42 made field goals.

Syracuse Basketball: Two teams ‘strong players’ for 4-star Chance Westry (itlh; Adler)

Not too long ago, we detailed how one national recruiting analyst has logged a prediction in favor of LSU out of the Southeastern Conference for Syracuse basketball 2022 four-star target Chance Westry.

That analyst, Jamie Shaw of , made his projection on July 6. Now a second national analyst on has given his own thoughts on the recruitment of the 6-foot-5 Westry, an elite guard and consensus top-45 prospect in his cycle.

In a recent article, basketball recruiting director Rob Cassidy provided some insights into how he thinks that Westry performed at the recently held 2021 Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, S.C.

By and large, Westry put forth some nice performances at the Peach Jam, although he did prove a tad inconsistent at times, according to Cassidy and other national analysts.

Syracuse basketball appears still in contention for four-star Chance Westry.

Westry will spend his senior year at Hillcrest Prep in Gilbert, Ariz., and he runs on the AAU circuit with an excellent team, the New York City-based NY Renaissance.

Regarding his recruiting process, Cassidy had this to say in his piece. “Syracuse and Auburn seem to be strong players as things stand. Westry also visited LSU in June.”

For context, Westry has actually taken official visits to the Hill, along with to the SEC’s Auburn, the Big Ten Conference’s Nebraska and LSU. There are also rumblings of a possible professional deal for Westry.

Jeremy Pope "On The Block" 7-27 (ESPN; radio; Axe)

Coach Pope joins Brent to discuss Boeheim’s Army’s first two wins of the TBT and what it’ll take for them to pick up four more wins on their quest for $1 million.

On The Block On Demand 7-27 (ESPN; radio; Axe)

Brent addresses how Syracuse football could turn last season’s struggles into a revenge tour and discusses how Boeheim’s Army improved against Team Heartfire.

Bradley and Syracuse basketball alumni are rekindling a college hoops rivalry. A look back (pjstar.com; Huett)

The Bradley and Syracuse men's college basketball programs have a long, but not-so-recent history of meaningful games.

That rivalry gets rekindled in a way at 8 p.m. Wednesday, when alumni from those programs meet in the 2021 version of The Basketball Tournament at Carver Arena in Peoria.

The winner of the third-round game between the BU alumni team of Always A Brave and the 'Cuse alumni Boeheim's Army earns a spot in the TBT quarterfinals on Saturday in Dayton, Ohio.

Until then, let's take a look at the four matchups between the two college programs — one from the early 1980s and another three from more than seven decades ago when Bradley had one of the nation's top programs.

March 15, 1982: Bradley 95, Syracuse 81

Dick Versace and the Missouri Valley Conference champions traveled to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., and came away with a win in front of a crowd of 16,039 in the second round of the National Invitational Tournament.

David Thirdkill scored 23 points and Mitchell Anderson 20 to lead the Braves, who went on to win their fourth NIT title that season.

The Associated Press called the win "particularly satisfying" for Versace, who thought Bradley deserved an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament. What's more, Versace said he believed then-Big East Conference Commissioner Dave Gavitt used his position on the selection committee to influence the choice of four Big East teams in the NCAAs.

Coach Jim Boeheim — the namesake of the alumni team — was in his sixth season at the school. The 76-year-old still heads the program.

March 31, 1951: Syracuse 76, Bradley 75

Bradley scored the first 18 points of the game, but Syracuse pulled out a victory in front of 8,600 in the championship game of the first and only National Campus Tournament at Robertson Memorial Fieldhouse in Peoria.

Ed Behnke put Bradley ahead 66-64, but Syracuse scored the next six and never trailed again. BU had a chance late, trailing 76-74. Syracuse's Jack Kiley called a timeout when the Orangemen had none. BU's Aaron Preece made the technical free throw, but a shot from Bradley's Fred Schlictman missed as time expired.

Syracuse Basketball: Chris McCullough making up for lost time for SU fans (itlh; Clark)

The close-out jumper by former Syracuse basketball player Chris McCullough that propelled Boeheim’s Army past Team Heartfire, 68-62, and into The Basketball Tournament’s Sweet 16 on Monday was an 18-footer, but it came all the way from the Philippines.

After all, McCullough, the Bronx, N.Y., native who teased the Carrier Dome’s Jim Boeheim Court for an abbreviated time in 2014-15 before injury, had a stretch of success in the Philippines Basketball Association (PBA) in 2019 that would bring lasting confidence to anyone.

When you average 32 points and 16 rebounds a game over a 16-game run upon joining a 2-7 San Miguel Beermen team and lead them to the PBA Commissioner’s Cup title as McCullough did, you can rise up to take a winning shot without hesitation.

It was great for us Syracuse basketball fans to see that TBT-winning moment authored by McCullough, because we were robbed of the chance to enjoy him much in an Orange uniform. A big-time recruit, McCullough started for 16 games, averaging 9 points and 7 boards for head coach Jim Boeheim before a torn ACL ended his college career.

“I always loved Syracuse, I love Coach Boeheim, I always wanted to play in the 2-3 zone, play in the Carrier Dome with 30,000 fans watching,” McCullough told CitrusTV last year.

The ‘best’ NY State Fair ever? These vendors are back for 2021 and they’re excited about it (PS; $; Cazentre)

Jim Hasbrouck is already cooking up ideas for the next big deep-fried concoction at his New York State Fair Fried Specialties stands.

Nick Sanford has plans for specialty fair-themed themed pizzas at the Toss & Fire food truck he parks on Restaurant Row.

And Eddie Brennan and his Beak & Skiff / 1911 Established team are gearing up for big things at the two stands they operate at opposite ends of the fairgrounds.

They are among the many food and drink vendors who will be returning 2021 fair, the first since the Covid-19 pandemic wiped out last year’s event.

While 21 food/drink vendors, including some big names like Tully’s and Gianelli/Dinosaur, are skipping this year’s fair, that still leaves nearly 200 that will be catering to hungry and thirsty fairgoers. (Another 40 or so of the 400 non-food vendors are opting out).

And there are new vendors on the way, like downtown Syracuse’s Oh My Darling and Luna Loca restaurants who will take over the Tully’s spot at the east end of the Midway.

Many of the returning vendors say this year’s fair, which runs from Aug. 20 to Sept. 6, has a huge potential upside.

“I think there’s a real pent-up demand,” said Brennan, whose stands feature 1911 hard ciders, spirits and cocktails. “I think there’s a good chance this will be the biggest, best State Fair ever. People just want to get out and do things.”

Brennan said he’s looking forward to more crowds at the 1911 stand on the west end of the fair, which is closer to the expanded music stage/venue called Chevy Park. The other 1911 stand is near the Horticulture Building.
