Welcome to Chicken Boy's Day!

Chicken Boy's Day marks the ceremonial birthday of Chicken Boy, a 22 foot tall fiberglass statue of a boy with a chicken head that holds a bucket of chicken. Chicken Boy first stood atop a fried chicken restaurant of the same name near Los Angeles' Grand Central Market in the 1960's. That's where it resided until 1984, when the restaurant owner died and it came under the possession of an art director, Amy Inouye, who hoped to preserve it. After many years of trying to find it a suitable home, Inouye's Future Studio moved to a location that could support Chicken Boy. It was installed on top of their building in the fall of 2007. Chicken Boy is one of many "Muffler Men" that began towering over America's roadways in the 1960's. Many of these gigantic men held mufflers, giving them their name, but many were also dressed as cowboys, or were made into Paul Bunyans. Both Chicken Boy's old and current locations are on Route 66, as are the locations of a handful of other Muffler Men, including the Gemini Giant. International Fiberglass of Venice, California, made Chicken Boy and the other Muffler Men, but Chicken Boy was customized afterwards to have a chicken head and arms that could hold a bucket. Chicken Boy is known as "The Statue of Liberty of Los Angeles", and his preservers were given the Governor's Preservation Award in 2010, by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Syracuse Basketball: Newly offered big man jumps into national rankings (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball held its annual Elite Camp this past weekend, and the Orange coaching staff doled out numerous scholarship offers to high-school prospects in the 2023 and 2024 cycles.

One of those offers went out to a 2023 big man who had previously received interest from the ‘Cuse, according to media reports. His name is Papa Kante, and he is a talented, under-rated prospect in this class.

The 6-foot-10 Kante, a power forward/center, is heading into his junior year at the South Kent School in South Kent, Conn., where former Orange guys Elijah Hughes and Matthew Moyer also suited up.

On the AAU circuit, Kante runs with the Boston-based Expressions Elite Basketball. In recent weeks, I’ve read numerous comments from national analysts and recruiting insiders that speak to Kante performing well at Nike’s Elite Youth Basketball League, which culminated with the 2021 Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, S.C., earlier this summer.

Syracuse basketball has gotten into the fray for an intriguing 2023 big man.

Multiple reports, including a tweet from Pro Insight director of scouting Andrew Slater, delivered the news about Kante landing an offer from the ‘Cuse.

Wow… Syracuse Offers Five Players – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Ezeir)

Syracuse’s annual Elite Camp took place this past weekend and didn’t disappoint. Out of the 19 attendees, five new offers were handed out. That doesn’t include SU commit Justin Taylor, or Peter Carey and Simeon Wilcher, who took part but already have offers from Syracuse.

The five include DJ Wagner, Papa Kante, Joseph Estrella and Reid Ducharme in 2023, and Donnie Freeman, the lone recruit in 2024 thus far.

This part of the process is huge for the Orange because many of these rising high school juniors (and in Freeman’s case, an incoming sophomore) will choose their college destination next summer. It also exposes SU’s vast facility, the Melo Center, and allows recruits to scour both the campus and area.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star big man target has colossal rankings boost (itlh; Adler)

It’s been nearly a month since Syracuse basketball offered fast-rising 2022 big man Dominick Barlow, and this young man’s stock has absolutely skyrocketed of late on a national scale.

Of course, this means more scholarship offers and more competition for the Orange to win out in the recruiting battle for the 6-foot-9 forward.

As a member of the New York City-based NY Renaissance, the four-star Barlow has played exceptionally well of late in AAU competitions, most notably the 2021 Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, S.C., according to national recruiting analysts.

The offers are pouring in, and Barlow is understandably seeing his national ratings within the 2022 class move up. I’ve seen more than one recruiting insider say that Barlow will ultimately evolve into a top-50 player in this cycle, and I totally agree.
Let’s review the latest 2022 rankings for Syracuse basketball prospect Dominick Barlow.

, one of the main recruiting services, updated its top-150 player ratings for the 2022 cycle a couple of days ago, and Barlow made one of the biggest climbs in the entire class.

In fact, he went from being unranked to checking in at No. 61 nationally, as well as a four-star player. has Barlow as the No. 16 small forward, too.

As of Monday night, the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rates Barlow as four stars, No. 82 overall, No. 14 at power forward and No. 1 in New Jersey.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star target 2nd SU visit great, Duke visit worrisome (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball high-priority target J.J. Starling, an elite combo guard, continues to take his time with his recruitment, and he’s planning another round of official visits in September.

A contingent of Orange fans on social media and in chat rooms is of the belief that the four-star Starling is likely headed somewhere besides the ‘Cuse.

I am not a recruiting analyst. I am not in Starling’s inner circle. And I do not have insider information from the Orange coaching staff. With that as context, though, I still personally feel that Syracuse basketball is right there in the mix for Starling, who is a consensus top-40 prospect nationally in the 2022 class.

According to a recent tweet by Andrew Slater, Pro Insight’s director of scouting, Starling will take four official visits in September. They are to Notre Dame on Sept. 3-5, the Hill on Sept. 10-12, Northwestern on Sept. 17-19, and Duke on Sept. 24-26.

Previously, while still a junior at the La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind., Starling made visits to the Orange, Maryland, Connecticut and Alabama.

According to media reports, Starling has traveled to Stanford as part of the five official visits he’s allowed by the NCAA during his senior year.

No Dino at the NYS Fair? No problem: 10 places to get a great sausage sandwich (PS; $; Miller)

Perhaps the biggest story to come out of the State Fair this year was news that Gianelli Sausage wouldn’t have a stand for the first time in 41 years, which meant that Dinosaur Bar-B-Que would sit this year out too.

Fear not. There’s still 20-some vendors here selling the essential fair food. “And they’re all really good,” said Jim Kerwin who sells some of the best sausage at his Tiki Turtle stand in the Colonnade.

Just for kicks, we tried 10 sausage sandwiches to see if there was a difference among them. This wasn’t a contest, just a sausage crawl. Here are our observations.

Mangia Bene

The 2021 State Fair Sausage Sandwiches

The sausage sandwich at Mangia Bene in the Eatery Building was the biggest of all.Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com

Where: Mangia Bene in the Eatery Building
Cost: $13
What’s so good about it? The sign out front boasts that it’s the biggest sausage at the Fair. We just felt it was our job to check and make sure that’s true. Our handy-dandy tape measure that we got at the Fair in 2019 said it’s 10 inches, which is about average. But this sandwich weighed a whopping 18.7 ounces. It was the only sandwich we tested that weighed more than a pound.

The vegetables were nicely caramelized, and the sausage was juicy and with a lot of interesting spices. But it wasn’t spicy hot. Before we could grab it from the counter, they stopped us so they could finish it with a few parsley flakes.

If you’re planning on eating more at the fair, you might want to bring a buddy to share with. Then again, it’s so delicious, you might not want to. Not bad for a stand new to the Fair this year.

Cost: $10
What’s so good about it? You can’t get any more State Fair than this. The sausage measured at 1 foot long and weighed 11.7 ounces, which made it leaner and lighter than our hefty opener.
