Welcome to Constitution Day and Citizenship Day!

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day "commemorate the formation and signing on September 17, 1787, of the Constitution and recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens." If September 17 takes place on a weekend or on another holiday, Constitution Day and Citizenship Day are observed on a nearby weekday. On the day, the president traditionally issues a proclamation calling on government officials to display the flag on government buildings, and calls for the day to be observed in schools and other places with appropriate ceremonies. Events and activities take place around the country, and civil and education groups provide citizens with educational resources about the Constitution.

Analyzing Syracuse’s ACC schedule: Brutal opener, Boeheims’ home finale and a whopping 7 Saturday home games (PS; Waters)

The ACC portion of Syracuse’s 2021-22 men’s basketball schedule was released on Thursday and, to paraphrase the great Sir Elton John, “Saturday night’s all right for hooping.’'

Among all of the quirks and facets in the Orange’s conference schedule, the plethora of Saturday home games stood out the most.

Syracuse will play seven conference games at the Carrier Dome, which could be a huge boon to attendance following a season in which the Orange played in front of absolutely no fans due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Here’s an analytical look at Syracuse’s schedule, the oddities, the tough stretches and the big games.

Saturdays

Saturdays have always been important for Syracuse, which regularly attracts its largest crowds to the Carrier Dome for the weekend games.

This season, seven of Syracuse’s 10 conference home games are on a Saturday. The fun starts with a New Year’s Day game versus Virginia on Jan. 1 and concludes with the regular-season finale against Miami on Saturday, March 5.

In between, Syracuse will host Florida State, Wake Forest, Louisville, Boston College and Duke for Saturday games. Expect the biggest crowds for the Louisville, Duke and Miami games.

Coach K’s final game at the Dome

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski has said that he will retire after the 2021-22 season. That means Duke’s game at Syracuse on Saturday, Feb. 26, will mark Coach K’s final trip to the Carrier Dome.

The crowd for that game could challenge the NCAA’s record for attendance at an on-campus game. The record of 35,642 fans was set when Duke came to the Dome on Feb. 23, 2019.

Fans who buy tickets for seats at the opposite end of the Dome are going to spend most of the day watching the game on the gigantic new scoreboard.

Buddy’s (and Jimmy’s) farewell

The biggest sendoff in Carrier Dome history occurred on March 5, 2006, when Gerry McNamara played his final home game.

A crowd of 33,633 packed the Dome to bid farewell to McNamara at the end of his legendary career. The day included pre-game chants of “Gerry! Gerry!’' and a chorus of school children singing “Danny Boy.’'

Prepare for a similar scene on March 5 when Syracuse hosts Miami what could be Buddy Boeheim’s final home game.

Not only will it be Senior Day for Buddy Boeheim, but it will also be the last game at the Dome for his older brother, Jimmy, who is a graduate transfer from Cornell.

And don’t even start with the speculation about a third Boeheim.

Syracuse released its conference schedule for this year, with 18 games featured on ESPN throughout the season.

Syracuse men’s basketball releases 2021-22 ACC schedule (DO; Shetty)

Syracuse released its conference schedule for the 2021-22 season, with trips to North Carolina, Florida State and Virginia Tech. The Atlantic Coast Conference announced its full slate of games on Thursday night. Syracuse will be featured on ESPN 12 times this season.

The Orange kick off the season with a pair of exhibition games against Pace and Le Moyne in the Dome before beginning their nonconference slate of games. Syracuse will start against Lafayette and then round out a home stretch against Drexel and Colgate. Next, SU heads to the Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament featuring UConn, Michigan State and defending national champions Baylor. The Orange open the tournament against Virginia Commonwealth University.

After returning from the Bahamas, the Orange will play Indiana in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. After that, the Orange begin their conference schedule against Florida State. Before returning to central New York, the Orange will go on a two-game road trip, starting at Madison Square Garden against Villanova. The Orange then take a trip to the nation’s capital to play longtime rival Georgetown. Finally, Syracuse returns to the Carrier Dome for a pair of matchups against Lehigh and Cornell to finish off its nonconference schedule.

Last year, Syracuse finished with a 9-7 conference record. The Orange received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after an eighth-place finish in the ACC. Powered by strong shooting from Buddy Boeheim, Syracuse advanced to the Sweet 16. Florida State was the only other ACC team to make it past the first weekend.

Here’s who the Orange are scheduled to play this year (home games in bold):

Analyzing Syracuse Basketball’s 2021-22 ACC Schedule – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Unsworth)

In case you missed it, the non-conference slate is already out, but let’s dive right into the meat and potatoes.

There it is, in all its glory. Syracuse’s 2021-22 conference schedule has been released, and it’s an absolute doozy.

A Brutal Start

Two of SU’s first three conference games are against teams are guaranteed to be in the top 25. The Orange kick off ACC play with an early trip down to the “Tuck” in Tallahassee, and you better believe Leonard Hamilton has reloaded his roster again. To ring in the new year, the Orange play 2021 ACC Tournament champions Georgia Tech, and three days later, the always-stifling defense of Virginia.

Two Tough Weeks

Check out the weeks of January 15th and February 5th. Starting with FSU at the Dome, a midweek contest with Clemson, who returns a lot of talent, and then traveling down to Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the Crazies back, Cameron returns to its revered status as one of college basketball’s hallmark venues. It’s also Coach K’s last home contest against his great friend Jimmy B.

30 Minutes In Orange Nation 9-16 (ESPN; radio; Steve & Paulie)

Steve and Paulie talk about the possibility of a split game at QB for SU against Albany. Then, they look ahead to the Syracuse Men’s Basketball schedule with the full ACC schedule coming out tonight at 7. Later, Paulie reacts to Steve’s interview with Coach Dino Babers.

Syracuse basketball 5-star target, No. 1 junior, impressive off the court, too (itlh; Adler)

After Syracuse basketball recently offered D.J. Wagner, the top-ranked prospect in the 2023 class, a lot of Orange fans chimed in that the ‘Cuse has virtually no chance at landing the five-star point guard.

Yeah, I admit it’s a long shot for the Orange to win out for the 6-foot-3 Wagner, who is already getting tons of projections from national analysts and recruiting insiders in the direction of Kentucky.

But the only way for Syracuse basketball to land these types of elite high-school players is to offer them scholarships first, and then see how their recruiting processes evolve.

I’m excited that the ‘Cuse coaching staff offered Wagner at the Orange’s recently held annual Elite Camp. Not only is Wagner a tremendous talent on the court, but he’s doing good off of the court as well. Let’s have a look.

Syracuse basketball five-star target D.J. Wagner has an admirable character.

Wagner attends Camden High School in Camden, N.J., which has an excellent squad that some experts believe will prove a pre-season top-25 unit ahead of the upcoming term.

Rob Cassidy, the basketball recruiting director for , recently published an article that I’m glad I saw. He noted that Wagner is doing his part to encourage more people in his community to get the vaccine for Covid-19.

Wagner and others recently participated in a new public service announcement, in partnership with Camden County’s board of commissioners, to increase vaccine administration. The PSA is available to watch on YouTube, by the way.

A police escort, 2 private jets and a last-minute miracle: Inside the mad dash to get the Foo Fighters to the Amp (PS; Baker)

Another minute and it wouldn’t have happened.

As one of the season’s biggest crowds at the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview buzzed over whether the Foo Fighters were actually coming, concert organizers planned how they would break some really, really bad news to everyone.

The band was stuck on a runway at JFK airport, grounded by a stubborn fog that wouldn’t lift. It was 8:19 p.m. and the pilot hadn’t gotten clearance for takeoff. It seemed impossible they’d make it to Syracuse for the show.

Organizers at the Amphitheater, then, planned the communications. They asked the band to record a video apologizing that they wouldn’t make it. They workshopped messaging for the crowd, wrestling with a harsh question: How do we tell 15,000 boozy, eager fans to turn around and go home?

Even Dave Grohl, the hard-charging front man whose name is synonymous with rock ‘n roll, seemed ready to give up.

“We sat on that runway for four f***ing hours,” he said. “And we’re like, ‘maybe the show won’t happen tonight.’ "

Grohl said the band set a deadline: If they weren’t en route to Syracuse by 8:20 p.m., the show wasn’t going to happen.

8:15 rolled around. Then 8:16. 8:17. 8:18.

At 8:19 p.m. Grohl got word from the pilot.

“They said, alright, we’re going to Syracuse,” he said. “We got a f***ing rock show.”

The drama of the delay and the will-they-won’t-they suspense left the crowd on edge for hours, eventually fueling a rollicking, rocking two-hour set from one of rock’s most revered bands.

It was the stuff rock ‘n roll legends are made of.

Video: How the PPP Cheese Pizza Blazed Trail of Success of Peppino's Pizzeria (DO; Williams & Jaffe)

Cheese, dough and tomato sauce. That was all John Vigliotti needed to win an award at the world’s largest pizza competition.

Vigliotti’s PPP cheese pizza, which is a nod to the Paycheck Protection Program used by businesses during COVID-19, won first place in the traditional division for the Northeast Region at the International Pizza Expo at Las Vegas.

What’s the secret? The award-winning pizza, sold at Vigliotti’s restaurant Peppino’s Pizzeria, is made with sharp provolone, grated parmesan and mozzarella cheese along with dough that’s been fermented for three days.

“It’s quite something to have won an award for a cheese pizza,” Anick Sinclair, director of marketing at Peppino’s Pizza, said. “Cheese pizza is a very naked thing. You can’t elaborate much more than the three ingredients.”
