Welcome to National Pepperoni Pizza Day!

Multiple surveys have shown pepperoni to be the favorite pizza topping of Americans, and over a third of the pizzas in the country are topped with it. So it comes as no surprise that there is a National Pepperoni Pizza Day.

Pepperoni takes its name from "peperoni"—with one "p"—an Italian name for a pepper. In Italy, what Americans call pepperoni is known as "salame piccante"—spicy salami. Pepperoni is a dried sausage made of a mixture of pork, beef, and spices, often including peppers. The name pepperoni began being used following World War I, primarily in Italian-American communities. At this time, pepperoni was primarily used as an appetizer, eaten on cured meat plates.

Pizza began becoming popular in America after World War II, and the first evidence of pepperoni on pizza dates to 1950. It gained in popularity at the same time that chain pizza restaurants were proliferating—Pizza Hut opened in 1958 and Dominoes opened in 1960. Pepperoni was easy to supply and transport long distances, and could easily be mass produced. It does not need to hang as long as many other types of meat: it may be ready in one to three weeks, while other meats, such as capicola, may take months to be ready, making them impractical for pizza.

Syracuse Basketball: 2022 4-star commits highly ranked at their positions (itlh; Adler)

Many of the primary recruiting services have updated their 2022 rankings of late, and we’re taking a look at where the two Syracuse basketball four-star commits in this cycle are placed at their respective positions.

To date, the Orange has verbal commitments from point guard Quadir Copeland, who chose the ‘Cuse in August, and wing Justin Taylor, who picked Syracuse basketball in June.

The main recruiting Web sites list the 6-foot-6 Taylor as a small forward, although Orange coaches have recruited him more as a shooting guard and likely heir apparent to ‘Cuse senior Buddy Boeheim.

As of the time of this writing, the industry-generated 247Sports Composite had Taylor as the No. 20 small forward across the country.

is the most bullish on Taylor, putting him as the No. 18 small forward, followed by 247Sports at No. 23 and ESPN at No. 28. The majority of recruiting services deem him a top-100 overall prospect in this class.

For his senior year, Taylor is suiting up on the post-grad team at the powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He transferred there from the St. Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Va.

Let’s see where Syracuse basketball four-star commit Quadir Copeland is nationally ranked.

Taylor and Copeland are friends off of the court, and the 6-foot-6 Copeland is also competing for the IMG Academy’s post-grad squad during his senior season. He most recently played at the Life Center Academy in Burlington, N.J.

Syracuse Basketball: Duke gets 5-star; could it boost SU with J.J. Starling? (itlh; Adler)

Some of the chatter from national analysts and recruiting insiders is that the recruiting process of 2022 four-star combo guard J.J. Starling, a consensus top-40 prospect, could end up coming down to Syracuse basketball versus Duke.

In all fairness, the 6-foot-3 Starling does have three other teams in his top five, and they are Northwestern, Notre Dame and Stanford. From what I’ve read about Starling, academics are important to him, and those are three elite academic institutions.

However, Starling is from Central New York, so the Orange being a potential front-runner could make sense. Plus, the Blue Devils are, well, the Blue Devils. Duke continues to recruit at a level perhaps only matched by Kentucky these days.

To that end, as we noted in a recent column, the Blue Devils picked up a verbal commitment from 2022 four-star shooting guard Jaden Schutt not too long ago. Schutt, a top-60 player, attends Yorkville Christian High School in Yorkville, Ill.

Even more recently, Duke got its first pledge in the 2023 cycle, as five-star point guard Caleb Foster gave an early verbal commitment to the Blue Devils.

Foster, who suits up for the powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., is rated No. 12 overall and No. 3 at point guard in his class, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

Duke is likely the biggest competition for Syracuse basketball to land J.J. Starling.

Depending on the recruiting Web site, and the team recruiting him, Starling is deemed either a point guard or a combo guard. I believe that the ‘Cuse is recruiting him to play point guard and shooting guard.

Now, if the likelihood is that Starling will prove a one-and-done player at the collegiate level, then the Blue Devils getting a stellar 2023 point guard may not really matter. But if Starling is more likely to stick around in college for at least two seasons, might Foster’s commitment to Duke impact Starling’s ultimate decision?

Syracuse guard Buddy Boeheim sits atop a Beak & Skiff tractor for a promotional video he did for the company.

Buddy Boeheim really wants to be an apple farmer. Or so says this Beak & Skiff promotional video. (PS; Ditota)

It’s apple season here in Central New York. And you know what that means for Syracuse University’s most visible Name, Image and Likeness personality.

Buddy Boeheim is promoting the biggest, grandest orchard in the region.

He’s shooting apples into barrels, wearing flannel shirts and rubber Wellies, attempting to drive a tractor and pretty much exhibiting extreme goofiness as Beak & Skiff president Eddie Brennan and its chief marketing officer Marianne Brennan (they’re married) express skepticism about whether he’s up to the task of being an apple farmer.

The videos are circulating on Beak & Skiff’s social media channels. Boeheim said he had “too much fun doing this,” on Instagram.

Boeheim, Syracuse’s senior basketball guard, is everywhere these days. He’s signing autographs at the mall. He’s appearing in cereal commercials. He’s endorsing a sports nutrition brand.

Interest in all these deals is twofold: One, the businesses Boeheim has chosen to align himself with are local. He said earlier this summer, when Name, Image and Likeness was enacted, that he preferred to seek his NIL opportunities with local brands.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star, top-15 target eyeing visits, including to the Hill (itlh; Adler)

Five-star combo guard Simeon Wilcher is one of the most sought-after prospects in the 2023 recruiting cycle, with a range of high-major programs targeting him, including Syracuse basketball.

The 6-foot-4 Wilcher recently participated in the Orange’s annual Elite Camp, and ‘Cuse coaches offered him a scholarship back in mid-July.

Since earlier in the summer, college coaches have been able to contact 2023 players directly. There have also been live periods at AAU competitions where college coaches could watch high-school prospects in person.

What’s more, college coaches during various recruiting and evaluation periods permitted by the NCAA are able to visit with 2023 players at their respective high schools or prep schools. And elite prospects such as Wilcher are also busy planning visits to college campuses.

Let’s look at where Syracuse basketball five-star target Simeon Wilcher is planning to visit.

Wilcher, a consensus top-15 player across the country in his cycle, recently had head coaches from North Carolina, Connecticut and Nebraska visit him, according to a tweet from college basketball insider Adam Zagoria.

Additionally, per Zagoria, Wilcher is aiming to make visits in the future to the Orange, Oregon and Maryland. That’s absolutely terrific news about Wilcher potentially traveling to Central New York, although competition for him is really intense.

Class of 23 @SimeonWilcher is also planning visits to @OregonMBB , @TerrapinHoops and @Cuse_MBB https://t.co/2oauZVqmr3
— Adam Zagoria (@AdamZagoria) September 15, 2021

Since Syracuse basketball offered him, other teams to have followed suit with new offers for Wilcher include North Carolina, Arkansas, Texas Tech and DePaul.

Syracuse Basketball: Buzz for 4-star Chance Westry shifts to new team (itlh; Adler)

A new front-runner could be emerging for Syracuse basketball 2022 target Chance Westry, who is a four-star guard and a consensus top-40 prospect in this cycle.

For a while now, Southeastern Conference member LSU had been picking up numerous predictions from national analysts and recruiting insiders as it pertains to the 6-foot-5 Westry.

But as we detailed in a recent column, LSU is reportedly no longer involved with Westry, according to media reports from college basketball insider Adam Zagoria and others.

Officially, Westry has a top 10 of the Orange, Mike Hopkins-led Washington, Maryland, Auburn, LSU, Connecticut, Southern California, Arizona State, Nebraska and DePaul.

Zagoria recently said that Westry plans to take an official visit to Southern California from September 24-26, while squads such as Auburn, the ‘Cuse and Arizona State remain in pursuit.

Earlier this summer, Westry visited several college campuses, including the Orange. He landed a scholarship offer from the ‘Cuse more than two years ago, but from what I can tell, it does seem like Syracuse basketball is a long-shot to get Westry at this juncture.

There may be a new favorite for Syracuse basketball four-star target Chance Westry.

As of Saturday afternoon, when I wrote this piece, I still saw several projections for Westry to LSU on the 247Sports Web site and https://n./content/prospects/2022/chance-westry-256120. However, if those Tigers are no longer in the running, I’d expect those predictions to change sooner rather than later.

To that end, one recruiting insider has logged a projection for Westry to another SEC team, Auburn.

Dushawn London, an excellent national analyst for 247Sports, is predicting Westry to Auburn. London made this projection on September 17, assigning a high confidence level.

Analyst predictions can change, and often rapidly, based on how fluid a high-school prospect’s recruiting process may be. That being said, London is extremely accurate with his crystal ball picks.

A hazy New England-style IPA called "Auspicious" from the new Riseform Brewing in Marcellus, N.Y. (Don Cazentre | dcazentre@syracuse.com)

A new craft brewery opens in Marcellus. It’s the 21st in Onondaga County (PS; Cazentre)

This small village in western Onondaga County welcomes its first craft brewery Sept. 18. It will be the 21st operating in the county.

Riseform Brewing opens at 4 E. Main St. in the heart of the Marcellus business district. Its hours are noon to 7 p.m. Saturday.

It’s a pretty simple concept: Five beers on tap, a cozy seating area complete with games and play areas for kids, limited hours and a generally small-town vibe.

“We’re really leaning into the idea of community,” said Andy Tidd, who runs Riseform along with his wife, Meg. “It’s meant to be family friendly. It’s intentionally small. We’re also here to fill a gap in Marcellus with something the village doesn’t have.”

For now, the Riseform tasting room will only be open on Saturdays. It may add Friday hours in the near future.

Andy Tidd is the brewer and the main bartender, though other family members, including Meg, will help out. He is also a part-time English teacher at Skaneateles High School.

Like many craft brewers, he started as a homebrewer. His tastes run the gamut of beer styles, from European classics, to first-wave American craft beers and up to the still-hot hazy, New England-style IPAs.

The initial lineup incudes a pale ale (a throwback to early craft), two New England IPAs (using different mixes of hops like Mosaic, Simcoe, Citra and others), an easy-drinking blonde ale and a seasonal Oktoberfest.

“Oktoberfest is one of my favorite styles to brew,” Tidd said, adding that his is a true lager with a long aging time.

The beer lineup will change, but not as frequently as some modern craft breweries.
