Welcome to The Fall Equinox!

The First Day of Fall, also known as The Fall Equinox or Autumnal Equinox, takes place when the Sun crosses the celestial equator—an imaginary line in the sky directly above the earth's Equator—from North to the South. When the autumnal equinox occurs in the Northern Hemisphere, the vernal equinox occurs in the Southern Hemisphere. During this time the sun shines directly on the Equator, and the length of day and night is nearly equal. Days continue to shorten in the Northern Hemisphere as the earth's axis begins to tilt away from the sun, and days lengthen in the Southern Hemisphere as the opposite occurs there. With this, fall, which is the transition period from summer to winter, is started in the Northern Hemisphere. Temperatures begin to cool and leaves fall from deciduous trees.

The word "autumn" has Etruscan roots, and was used by the Romans before becoming the Latin word "autumnus". It was used sparingly in the Middle Ages, and came into wide use in the 16th century. Referring to the season as "harvest" was prevalent prior to the 16th century, and the use of the term "fall" has Germanic roots and became a widespread term used in England in the 16th century—deriving its name from the phrases "fall of the leaf" and "fall of the year." Although the term is now used less in England, it was brought by immigrants to North America and has remained in wide use there.

Syracuse Basketball: Upcoming visit is huge for landing talented big man (itlh; Adler)

Under-rated 2022 big man Peter Carey is expected to take an official visit to Syracuse basketball during the weekend of September 24, according to media reports, and I have a feeling that this trip could help potentially seal the deal for the Orange to win out for the 7-foot power forward/center.

Let me just say here that I’m not a recruiting analyst, nor am I in Carey’s inner circle. Based on comments that I’ve read about Carey on social media and in chat rooms of late, it appears that the ‘Cuse could be one of the front-runners, or even the sole front-runner, for the excellent big man.

Carey does hold numerous other high-major offers, and a former Big East Conference foe may prove the Orange’s biggest competition for him, at least for now.

However, if Carey’s upcoming visit to Central New York goes well, and I believe that it will, it could pave the way for him to possibly give a verbal commitment to Syracuse basketball in the near future.

To reiterate, this is simply my own personal opinion. Recruiting processes for high-school players often ebb and flow, and they can change rapidly. Plus, there are other strong suitors out there pursuing Carey.

Syracuse Basketball: Mike Hopkins could be biggest threat for 4-star wing (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball high-priority target Chris Bunch, a 2022 four-star wing, received a scholarship offer about a month ago from Washington, whose head coach is former long-time Orange assistant Mike Hopkins.

Sure, the Huskies struggled on the court a season ago, however, Hopkins is an elite recruiter. He proved that on the Hill for many years, and Hopkins has secured multiple four-star and five-star players during his tenure with Washington.

As it pertains to the 6-foot-7 Bunch, he reportedly was on an official visit to the Huskies this past weekend, according to a tweet from 247Sports national analyst Brandon Jenkins.

Bunch, a consensus top-100 prospect across the country in the 2022 recruiting cycle, has already taken official visits to the ‘Cuse and to Rutgers. Now we can add in Washington, too.

Syracuse basketball looks like a top contender for four-star Chris Bunch.

The buzz on social media and in chat rooms has been that perhaps Rutgers would be the biggest threat to the Orange winning out for Bunch. However, I’m getting a feeling that Washington may prove the biggest competition for Syracuse basketball.

I’m not a recruiting analyst, nor am I in Bunch’s inner circle. However, I do think that the Orange is one of the front-runners, if not the front-runner, for him.

Syracuse Basketball: Brewster pipeline loaded with 4-star, 5-star targets (itlh; Adler)

The Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., is one of the premier prep-school squads around the country, and in recent years several of its players have gone on to suit up for Syracuse basketball.

These Brewster Academy alumni to play on the Hill include senior shooting guard Buddy Boeheim, C.J. Fair, Chris McCullough and Taurean Thompson, among others.

It’s entirely possible that, in the somewhat near future, the ‘Cuse could witness more Brewster Academy products who elect to don a Syracuse basketball uniform.

By my count, at least four 2023 prospects who attend the Brewster Academy either have scholarship offers from the Orange, or ‘Cuse coaches are displaying interest in them.

All of these 2023 players are in the top-100 national rankings from at least one primary recruiting service. Three of them are in the top 50. Two of them are in the top 20. That’s pretty cool stuff.

Syracuse basketball coaches recently visited these Brewster Academy prospects.

According to several tweets from journalists and national recruiting analysts, Orange coaches visited four Brewster Academy juniors of late, and they are five-star wing Matas Buzelis, five-star wing Taylor Bowen, four-star shooting guard Aaron Clark and four-star combo guard Reid Ducharme.

Mike Waters of Syracuse.com tweeted out that ‘Cuse head coach Jim Boeheim and assistant coach Gerry McNamara recently visited Brewster Academy to see Buzelis, Bowen and Ducharme.

U.S. malls recovering from Covid, but Destiny USA still has symptoms, report says (PS; $; Moriarty)

Shopping malls are showing a “marked and impressive recovery” from the major blow they suffered from the coronavirus pandemic last year, but Destiny USA in Syracuse, New York’s largest mall, is not among them, according to a new report.

July marked the first month of mall visits exceeding pre-Covid, 2019 figures, Placer.ai said in its report, “Mall Deep Dive.” Visits to malls were up 0.7% in July 2021 compared with the same month in 2019, putting the shopping mall foot traffic recovery “in line with the recovery of other Covid-hit industries,” the retail analytics firm said.

But traffic remains down at six of the nation’s six leading malls, including Destiny. And the Syracuse mall had the biggest decline with a 17.6% drop in visitors in the second quarter of 2021 compared with the same period in 2019, according to the report.

“Comparing foot traffic in leading malls during the second quarter of 2021 to the second quarter of 2019 shows that some locations are clearly recovering faster than others,” the company said.

The other five malls cited were King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania, down 3.4%; the Galleria in Texas, down 8.8%; the nation’s largest mall, the Mall of America in Minnesota, down 9.8%; Del Amo Fashion Center in California, down 16.4%; and Aventura Mall in Florida, down 16.8%.
