Welcome to Rainforest Day!

Rainforest Day celebrates the positive impact of rainforests, brings awareness to their plight, and aims to reduce humankind's negative impact on them. Found in South and Central America, West and Central Africa, Southeast Asia, and Australia, rainforests make up just 2% of the Earth's surface area. They usually are lush, humid, and hot, with an average temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 68 degrees Fahrenheit at night. They tend to receive rain year-round, usually more than 70 inches. Not all rainforests are the same, however, with tropical, temperate, mangrove, and monsoon rainforests differing from each other.

Rainforests are essential because they absorb carbon dioxide from human activity, produce oxygen, provide fresh water, provide a home for half of the world's animal and plant species, are the source of medicines, and stabilize climate patterns. Their loss—of which approximately 40 football fields worth disappear each minute—threatens biodiversity and the overall health of the Earth.

Chris Bunch, a top 100 recruit in the ‘22 class, will announce his college decision on Thursday.

Bunch, a 6-foot-7 forward at Wasatch (Utah) Academy, has narrowed his choices down to a final three of Syracuse, Washington and Rutgers. Bunch had been expected to make his announcement on Oct. 31, but he put out a message on Twitter that he would reveal his decision on Thursday.

He is ranked No. 72 in 247Sports.com composite ratings for the 2022 class and No. 58 in 247′s own rankings. ESPN.com has Bunch listed at No. 97 in its class rankings. puts him at No. 81.

Bunch took an official visit to Syracuse on the weekend of Sept. 24-25. It was the second visit to Syracuse for Bunch, who also toured the campus last June.

Chris Bunch Moves Up Commitment Date (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse basketball target Chris Bunch, a forward in the 2022 recruiting class, has moved his commitment date up to October 21st at 5pm. He previously stated he would commit on the 31st. Bunch is down to three schools: Rutgers, Syracuse and Washington. He has visited each school, including two officials to Syracuse.

"The Syracuse visit was good," Bunch said after the first official. "I finally got to meet coach Boeheim in person. We got to talk a little bit. It was my first time being in the Dome, I got to put on a jersey. It felt like the whole Syracuse experience. I got to watch workouts and played a couple pickup games with them too. It was good."

About that pickup game.

"I knew Buddy and Jim, Boeheim's sons," Bunch said. "We were on the same team. We won three in a row. The first game, I was a little intimidated getting bumped around because I'm not used to going against these college kids. About the second, third game, I got real comfortable and just started playing. Me, Buddy and Jim won about three games in a row."

He left his visit with a strong impression of the Orange.

"Being at Syracuse, Syracuse in the recent years hasn't been as good as they were, but coming at Syracuse, seeing coach Boeheim and hearing how much interest he has in me, even just walking around the place, it definitely gave me more interest," Bunch said. "At the end of the day, it's the Dome. I haven't really experienced any colleges yet so I can't really compare it to anything else. But it was a great experience being able to walk the same halls as Carmelo Anthony. Realizing what type of school that is and what it can do for me as a player. It definitely made my interest in Syracuse a lot higher."

Syracuse Basketball: Brewster 5-star target trending toward No. 1 ranking (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2023 five-star target Matas Buzelis has made one of the biggest jumps in a recent national refresh from one of the primary recruiting services.

The 6-foot-10 Buzelis, who can suit up at both guard positions and on the wing, leaped from No. 43 overall to No. 4 across the country within his class, according to new national rankings from 247Sports.

His climb of 39 placements in the recently updated 247Sports ratings represented one of the biggest gains throughout the entire 2023 cycle.

Buzelis is a junior at the powerhouse Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., which has sent numerous guys to the Hill over the years. The Orange coaching staff offered a scholarship to him last November, well before Buzelis’ stock absolutely blew up.

Syracuse basketball faces heated competition for five-star prospect Matas Buzelis.

Even though Buzelis has soared into the top-five overall according to 247Sports, and he’s No. 10 nationally per ESPN, he may not be done in this regard, some recruiting analysts say.

The sense that I’m getting is Buzelis, should he continue to shine at the Brewster Academy and in AAU competitions, could seriously contend for the No. 1 overall ranking in the 2023 class.

In fact, as 247Sports released its new 2023 national ratings, that recruiting service published a couple of accompanying pieces where various 247Sports analysts discussed players in this cycle who might be in the mix for the No. 1 spot.

Buzelis’ name absolutely came up. More than once, in fact. Said Eric Bossi, the national basketball director for 247Sports, in one article: “Standing nearly 6-foot-10, he’s as skilled of a wing as you will find and his size, handling, shot making and passing make him a serious mismatch. He needs to get stronger, there’s no disputing that, but he isn’t soft and I love his killer mentality.”

Syracuse Basketball: Big-man commit highly placed in these 2022 rankings (itlh; Adler)

When talented 2022 big man Peter Carey gave his verbal commitment to Syracuse basketball not long after taking an official visit to the Hill, I felt extremely excited about this development.

Ever since the Orange got involved with the 7-foot power forward/center, I thought the ‘Cuse might have a good chance to get him, and I also believed that Carey would prove a strong fit within the Syracuse basketball system.

Yet, as often happens, a contingent of my fellow Orange fans groaned on social media and in chat rooms that Carey wasn’t nationally ranked by the majority of recruiting services.

I respect and understand this line of thinking. But I don’t agree with it. For one, the prep school where Carey is a senior, Northfield Mount Hermon School in Mount Hermon, Mass., didn’t compete last season due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. That meant he lost out on some opportunities, I would imagine, for scouts, recruiting analysts and others to evaluate his skill-set.

Syracuse basketball 2022 commit Peter Carey is an under-rated prospect.

From my perspective, assuming Carey shines in his senior stanza at the Northfield Mount Hermon School, I see no reason why he won’t evolve into a four-star, top-100 player throughout the country in the 2022 cycle, according to the bevy of recruiting Web sites.

But even now, Carey does possess some solid regional rankings that we’re going to examine. Per the New England Recruiting Report (newenglandrecruitingreport.com), Carey is ranked No. 14 in New England within the 2022 class, as well as No. 7 in Massachusetts for his cycle.

ACC Basketball: Projecting each team’s key player production for 2021-22 (bustingbrackets.com; Sinodhinos)

ACC Basketball fielded seven teams in the 2020-21 NCAA Division I Tournament and they did so without the Louisville Cardinals and the Duke Blue Devils being among them. The exclusion of those traditionally successful teams would speak to the strength of the conference, if not for the fact that just Florida State and Syracuse managed to advance past the first round.

The run to the Sweet Sixteen was a great talking point for the ACC last season, this season, however, the continuous narrative will be the final season of legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski. The Blue Devils are just one of fifteen teams in the ACC and while the talk going into the 2021-22 season, will be the effects of Coach K’s departure, this season it is about the players who have departed via the transfer portal.

As Pittsburgh and Wake Forest lost five players to the portal, teams such as Syracuse, Clemson, and Boston College lost four respectively. As no team in the ACC was untouched by the portal, the questions are plenty when it comes to the ACC. The erupt departure of so many familiar faces was just as quickly countered by new ones looking to make their mark in one of the top power conferences in the nation.

Whether it be due to coming from a mid-major, stepping into a starting role, or caused by accepting a supporting role at a bigger school, player production is going to rise as well as fall as all fans hope their new-look team is in a position to improve in the win category.

Boston College: Brevin Galloway and Quinten Post

Decrease in production: Brevin Galloway

Brevin Galloway played just four games last season for the College of Charleston and those four starts were enough to garner interest from head coach Earl Grant. Galloway’s fifteen points per game average was highlighted by a twenty-seven-point performance versus Marshall and a fifteen-point performance versus North Carolina in the season opener.

Aside from the seven games as a freshman, the 6’2 guard has started all but two, a trend that should continue at the start of the Eagles’ season, but is far from a guarantee. Not only will Galloway’s role in the starting line-up be challenged, playing time will be as well by DeMarr Langford.

In his first season, the 6’5 Langford started nine games and averaged twenty-five minutes while scoring almost seven points per game. Galloway’s 42 percent shooting from beyond the arc will give him the edge, but this is more of a platoon than a defined starter/backup situation.

Increase in production: Quinten Post

Last season 6’9/230 James Karnik was the biggest player they had to play the center position, this season the Eagles will have a post, Quinten Post to be exact. The 7’0 / 230-pound Sociology student arrives in Chestnut Hill after two seasons and thirty-nine games with Mississippi State. Post leaves Mississippi State as Garrison Brooks arrives, as Post averaged fewer than nine minutes in a backup role to Abdul Ado.

The third-year German-born center will get his first start in an NCAA game alongside Karnik and with T.J Bickerstaff coming off the bench for either player, Post will not just have an increase in production but will be a valuable component of Coach Grant’s offense in the post.

Syracuse: Buddy Boeheim and Cole Swider

Decrease in production: Buddy Boeheim

With the transferring of Kadary Richmond (6.3 ppg, 21 mpg), Quincy Guerrier (13.7 ppg, 32.9 mpg) plus Alan Griffin (13.3 ppg, 29.3 mpg) declaring for the NBA Draft, and Marek Dolezaj (9.8 ppg, 35 mpg) the Syracuse Orange are going to see a decrease in production. Since Buddy Boeheim is the Syracuse Orange, it only stands to reason Boeheim himself will see a decrease.

Will Boeheim average almost 18 points per game, while connecting on 38 percent of the eight three-pointers he attempts and ultimately being named to the All-ACC Tournament Team? It’s possible, as he is that good, but it stands to reason it will be a lot more difficult. Boeheim will be the primary option on offense and every defender will know it. Not only will Boeheim be attempting more shots, but he will also be attempting a lot more contested shots.

Increase in production: Cole Swider

The main thing that kept Cole Swider coming off the Villanova bench for head coach Jay Wright was the fact that the 6’9 forward was a clear liability guarding the perimeter. Swider’s less than stellar defense limited his playing time to 19 minutes per game, where he managed to average fewer than six points. Swider’s transfer to Syracuse for the 2021-22 season will result in a permanent spot in the starting line-up, something that happened just twice last season.

Swider brings a 40 percent success rate from beyond the arc, which would have placed him as the best shooter for the Orange in 2020-21. In addition to his offensive upside, Swider will be able to stay on the court much more thanks to the well-known zone defense he will be a part of. Granted a zone defense does require much more than just standing in your dedicated zone, but the team defense itself is so good, Swider will never be left on a defensive island on the perimeter.

We are now three years removed from Virginia's run to the national title, and the Cavaliers have not quite reached those heights again. Is this the season that Tony Bennett's crew is able to regain the level of success that the achieved from 2014-2019? Jeff Goodman was joined by Tony Bennett to preview this year's Wahoos.

Thoughts on the AP Poll: Duke men's basketball checks in at No. 9 (dukechronicle.com; Piazza)

The first AP Poll of the year came out today and with that, the Blue Zone is here to give you our thoughts on the rankings. We'll be here every week that Duke men's basketball lands a spot in the Top 25.

Duke atop the conference
i.gif

To little surprise, the Blue Devils came in as the highest-ranked ACC team at No. 9. The ACC preseason selections do not come out until Tuesday, but it is a very strong possibility that freshman Paolo Banchero is picked as the preseason player of the year and that Duke lands the most first-place votes. That being said, the Blue Devils are dealing with a knee injury that their second-highest ranked recruit in AJ Griffin suffered in practice Oct. 8. Head coach Mike Krzyzewski said that the team is hoping for it to be a matter of weeks until his return. Griffin should eventually pair with Banchero, Jeremy Roach, Trevor Keels, Mark Williams and Wendell Moore Jr., to make for a lethal six-man rotation that also has big man transfer Theo John and forward Joey Baker to play quality minutes.

ACC reporting for duty

It looks like the committee decided not to hold the conference's subpar 2021 NCAA tournament performance against it. After Florida State and Syracuse carried the ACC with respective Sweet 16 appearances, 4 teams from the conference landed a spot in the season's first rankings. This is a pivotal year in the conference with first-year head coach Hubert Davis at North Carolina and Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski being in his last season. All eyes will be glued to both the Duke and North Carolina situations, but there are certainly other crucial storylines across the conference. What does Earl Grant do in his first year at Boston College? How do Josh Pastner and Georgia Tech follow up their ACC tournament title? Can Mike Brey take his experienced Notre Dame roster back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2017?
