Welcome to National Spaghetti Day!

Spaghetti, a long, cylindrical, and thin pasta made of milled wheat and water, is celebrated today. Its name comes from an Italian word meaning "thin string" or "twine." The first written record of pasta is in the Talmud, which dates to the fifth century CE. It mentions dried pasta that could be cooked by being boiled. A popular theory claims that spaghetti was invented in China and Marco Polo brought it to Venice, but it is more likely that spaghetti was originally created in Sicily more than 500 years before his time. Arabs occupied Sicily in the seventh century CE, and brought a meal called itriyya, which was described as a "dry pasta". This is likely where spaghetti came from. In a geographical survey of Sicily and surrounding regions called the Book of Roger, commissioned by Sicily's monarch King Roger II and published by Muhammad al-Idrisi in 1154, a long strand hard wheat pasta is mentioned. It was manufactured in large quantities in the Sicilian town of Trabia and exported to other regions. This is the first definitive historical record of spaghetti production.

Analysis: Why did Jim Boeheim describe his Syracuse defense as ‘horrendous’ and ‘a disgrace?’ (PS; Ditota)

It’s been a theme all season.

Syracuse has struggled, at times really struggled, to guard teams this season. The Orange ranks 188 in Kenpom’s defensive efficiency, which takes pace into consideration. It is, by far, the worst SU has been ranked in a KenPom era that began in 2002. Before this season, SU’s worst defensive team during that span was 2017, when it ranked 119 in KenPom.

“It’s really 100% responsible for our record,” SU coach Jim Boeheim said of his team’s defense. “We’ve done most everything I know to fix it. We’re gonna keep trying to fix it, but at the end of the day we need to play better on the defensive end.”

On Saturday, Virginia shot 53% overall and 63% in the second half to beat the Orange 74-69. UVa made 35% of its 3-point attempts. The Cavaliers, until then, had trouble scoring. They lost games when they managed just 49, 47 and 50 points. They play slower than any other team in Division I basketball, so the amount of points they score correlates somewhat to their pace of play.

But even after their terrific shooting game against SU, Virginia ranks 229th in 3-point shooting and 85th in 2-point shooting. The Cavaliers have not been efficient shooters or scorers.

Boeheim said he usually shows his team five or six “really bad defensive clips” after games to illustrate areas of necessary improvement. After the Virginia game, he found 14 plays “without even trying.”

Players, he said, were not properly positioned in that game.

“Our defense was a disgrace,” he said. “That’s on me, I’m the coach, I’m responsible for that. Literally seven guys made a really bad defensive mistake. A couple guys made multiple defensive mistakes. And you can’t win games that way. We’ve already demonstrated that. Our offense has been good enough. Our defense has been horrendous.”

SYRACUSE BASKETBALL VIRGINIA RECAP | Joe Girard Struggles Again, Should Symir Torrence Play More?

Unless Syracuse basketball shores up defense, no chance at Big Dance (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has lived on the proverbial NCAA Tournament bubble in recent years, although to the team’s credit, when the Orange does get into March Madness, it often does some damage.

But first, the ‘Cuse has to earn a berth. I hate to start off 2022 with a heap of pessimism, but the Syracuse basketball defense is really struggling, and the Orange needs a lot of quality wins to boost its potential post-season resume.

Yet the ‘Cuse, to date in the 2021-22 campaign, hasn’t shown the capacity to consistently play even an average level of defense. I’m not hating on my beloved boys in Orange, however, the reality is reality.

What’s more, as Syracuse basketball arrives at Atlantic Coast Conference competition in earnest, this conference isn’t looking all that great, which to me suggests that even if the ‘Cuse gets on a roll, it won’t be able to notch a sizable number of impressive triumphs.

Syracuse basketball has two pivotal ACC clashes coming up.

There have been signs here and there reflecting that, perhaps, the Orange zone defense was improving. The ‘Cuse only allowed 60 points and 67 points, respectively, to Florida State on the road and to Villanova in New York City.

More recently, Syracuse basketball crushed Brown and then held another Ivy League member, Cornell, way under its scoring average in 2021-22.

This past Saturday, though, as we all embarked on a new year, the Orange gave up 41 points in the second half to Virginia in a 74-69 setback on the Hill.

Losing to the Cavaliers isn’t an awful thing. UVA might not be terrific at this juncture in 2021-22, but Virginia is still a strong program. However, entering this ACC battle, the Cavaliers were averaging barely above 60 points per encounter on offense.

And Syracuse basketball (7-6, 1-1) put forth a performance on defense in which UVA connected on 52.6 percent from the field, according to ESPN statistics. The Cavaliers also scored significantly more in this win than they have, on average, produced in 2021-22.

ACC basketball notebook: Bennett pleased with bench players' performance against Syracuse (dailyprogress.com; Madia)

Tony Bennett said he was pleased Virginia got contributions from reserves Kody Stattmann and Taine Murray in its win at Syracuse this past Saturday.

“Everybody who played had good stretches,” Bennett, the Cavaliers coach, said Monday during the Atlantic Coast Conference coaches Zoom call, “and when you look at some of our games, the ability to get some production, whether it’s points or some other kind of production from our bench is important. And I thought we got that from both of those guys, and even though [forward] Francisco [Caffaro] didn’t score, he came in the second half, righted the ship and did some things.”

Stattmann provided his burst of energy primarily in the first half as UVa initially built a double-digit advantage in the Carrier Dome. He had four points, two rebounds, two blocks and an assist. Murray had seven points in only 14 minutes of action, and he converted a key layup to keep the Cavaliers up five with about five minutes left in the game.

Those type of efforts are always helpful from non-starters, but could be necessary moving forward as programs across the ACC and all of college basketball – including UVa – work diligently to navigate potential coronavirus problems.

The Cavaliers had all of their regular starters in the lineup against the Orange, but only used eight players in total. In all 12 of their games leading up to Saturday, at least nine players saw action and in eight of those games, at least 10 players took the floor.

“We got hit by some COVID issues,” Bennett said, “so we had a couple of guys out and a couple of guys go and practice for only two days leading up to that. So, we weren’t sure exactly who we were going to have, but that last [coronavirus] test we received before we practiced [Friday] was important. We were close to possibly not playing that [Syracuse] game.”

Syracuse Signee Justin Taylor Takes in First Basketball Game in the Dome (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse basketball signee Justin Taylor attended Saturday's game against Virginia in the Carrier Dome. AllSyracuse.com caught up with Taylor after his visit to see how it went.

"This was my first time seeing a basketball game in the Dome, since we came for a football game for my official earlier this year," Taylor said. "It was a lot of fun, though, just experiencing the atmosphere and being around all the fan base as well as getting to meet some of the players' families. Obviously the atmosphere was a little different without students there, but it was still electric in there.

"This was really the only game I was able to come to with my schedule at IMG, so it worked out well as I was still on break."

During his official visit, Taylor was mistaken for Buddy Boeheim on multiple occasions. This time around, that was not the case but he still felt the love from Orange fans.

"I wasn’t mistaken for Buddy this time," Taylor said. "The fans were incredible though. The second I walked into the Dome I felt the love from them as they were coming up to me wishing me luck next year, asking for pictures, autographs and everything. Just makes me that more eager to play for a fan base like that."
