Welcome to National Keto Day!

National Keto Day was started by The Vitamin Shoppe, a nutritional products retailer, as "an annual observance of the popular high-fat, low carb ketogenic (keto) diet that has been shown to offer a number of health benefits, including weight loss, blood sugar maintenance, and cognitive support." Additionally, it was established "to celebrate the ever-growing keto community and help demystify the diet for potential newbies." It takes place early in the year, at a time when people are looking for ways to achieve their health and wellness goals for the upcoming year.

The day is celebrated in Vitamin Shoppe stores and on social media. Followers of The Vitamin Shoppe's Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter pages receive tips, recipes, and nutritional information related to keto on the day. Participants in the day take photos of themselves with their favorite keto foods or supplements and post them to Instagram using the hashtag #NationalKetoDay. During the first year's celebration, in 2019, The Vitamin Shoppe donated $5 for every post made with the hashtag, to Blessings in a Backpack, an organization that provides food to hungry elementary school children on the weekends. They set the limit at $25,000, and they met their goal.

Syracuse basketball at Miami: What to know (PS; Waters)

Syracuse will leave wintry Central New York and travel to sunny South Florida where it will run straight into the hottest team in the ACC on Wednesday.

Syracuse, which is coming off a disappointing home loss to Virginia on Saturday, will face a Miami team that has won its last seven games.

Miami is off to a 3-0 start in the ACC after notching wins over North Carolina State and Wake Forest last week. The last time Miami won its first three ACC games was in the 2012-13 season. That was the first and only time that Miami was the ACC’s regular-season champion.

With an 11-3 overall record, Miami has already exceeded its win total from a year ago when the Hurricanes endured a plethora of injuries and finished the year with a 10-17 mark.

Syracuse, on the other hand, is floundering, especially on the defensive end of the court.

The loss to Virginia dropped the Orange’s record to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. The 7-6 start is the worst record through the first 13 games of the season ever in Jim Boeheim’s 46-year head coaching tenure.

Here are five key things to know about the Syracuse-Miami game, which is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. at Miami’s Watsco Center:

SU’s “horrendous’' defense

In his appearance on the ACC’s weekly coaches conference call on Monday, Jim Boeheim didn’t mince words when it came to his team’s defense in Saturday’s 74-69 loss to Virginia.

Beat writers predict Miami will extend win streak to 8 with win over Syracuse (DO; Staff)

Syracuse travels to Miami for a Wednesday night showdown between two of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s best-ranked offenses and worst-ranked defenses. The Orange are coming off a five-point defeat to Virginia where SU allowed 74 points to the Cavaliers.

After the game, both Buddy Boeheim and head coach Jim Boeheim said that the loss was because of the Orange’s defense. Scoring 69 points against UVA should’ve been enough to win had the defense played better, both said.

SU will play the first of two consecutive road games in Coral Gables before it travels to Winston-Salem to face Wake Forest on Saturday. Miami will look to extend its win-streak to eight games.

Here’s what our beat writers predict will happen in Syracuse’s (7-6, 1-1 ACC) third conference game of the season:

Out of control
Miami 87, Syracuse 84

These are two teams trending in opposite directions right now, both with porous defenses but one with a more consistent offense than the other. Miami’s offense has clicked all season at a rate not seen before under head coach Jim Larrañaga, and the Hurricanes have won seven consecutive games while topping 90 points in their last two conference games. Most of Miami’s offense runs through its three guards — Isaiah Wong (16.5 points per game), Kameron McGusty (18.3) and Charlie Moore (11.1) — so if the Orange can find ways to limit their effectiveness, forcing the ball inside but stopping entrance passes into the high post, they could have a winning formula. But it’s difficult to pick SU in any of these games against a team with a streaking offense and passable defense because of how the Orange’s zone has struggled this year. I think they’ll fall just short in a high-scoring game because Syracuse will have one or two more defensive miscues leading to its fourth loss in the last six games.

What defense?
Miami 83, Syracuse 80

Miami is off to an 11-3 start after back-to-back-to-back losing seasons, and the Hurricanes’ offense means business. On the other hand, their defense is outside the KenPom top 200 and struggling, much like Syracuse’s. On Monday, Boeheim described the Orange defense as “horrendous” and added that it is “100% responsible for our record.” The even more disturbing part was when Boeheim went on to say that he’s done almost everything he can think of to fix it, yet the unit still needs drastic improvement. He accepted the blame for his players’ countless defensive mistakes and bad positioning, stating bluntly: “I’m the coach (and) I’m responsible for that.” But Syracuse just doesn’t seem to have the answer to these defensive issues. Maybe it’ll find solutions later in the season, but for now, Miami’s offense will outscore Syracuse’s offense in a battle where the defenses continue to go missing.

Opponent Preview: Everything to know about Miami (DO; Shetty)

After two nonconference wins over Brown and Cornell, it looked like Syracuse was gaining steam ahead of Atlantic Coast Conference play. But against Virginia, the Orange kept it close before eventually allowing UVA to pull away in the second half.

Up next for SU is two away games against Miami and Wake Forest. The Hurricanes have put together a solid season so far, sitting at 11-3, and have three ACC wins already. Miami ranks 22 spots below the Orange on KenPom, however, and the outcome of Wednesday’s game should provide clarity on how the ACC will shape up.

Here’s what you need to know about Miami before Syracuse embarks on its two-game road trip:

All-time Series

Syracuse leads, 20-9.

Last time they played

The last time Syracuse and Miami squared off was last January when the Orange posted an easy 83-57 win over the Hurricanes.

Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard III led Syracuse with 23 points each, combining for nine made 3-pointers. The pair each shot over 50% from the floor, and Quincy Guerrier added 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting. With the large lead, head coach Jim Boeheim went into his bench, giving then-reserves Jesse Edwards and Kadary Richmond each over 20 minutes of action. After grabbing the lead midway through the first half, SU never looked back en route to a big win.

KenPom odds

KenPom gives Miami a 57% chance of winning with a projected score of 81-79.

The Miami report

Miami has shown significant improvement after finishing 8-16 in the regular season and 4-15 in the ACC last year. But the Hurricanes did manage to put together a small run in the ACC Tournament, upsetting Pittsburgh and Clemson before falling to Georgia Tech.

The Canes are already off to a strong start this season with three ACC wins and the potential to already match last year’s total with a win over SU. Miami started the season 4-3 with losses to UCF, Dayton and Alabama but has since won seven straight games with conference wins over Clemson, Wake Forest and NC State.

Syracuse basketball odds: Miami a slight favorite over SU (PS; Herbert)

Miami is favored over Syracuse for tonight’s basketball game, but SU still has a fighting chance.

The Hurricanes are a 2-point favorite over the Orange, according to odds published by VegasInsider.com and Covers.com. The over/under is 156.5 points, according to both betting sites.

After some schedule changes last month due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Syracuse saw last week as a chance for a fresh start but suffered a 74-69 loss to Virginia at the Carrier Dome on Saturday. The Orange got little scoring support from anybody not named Boeheim against UVA; Jimmy and Buddy Boeheim scored 45 of Syracuse’s 69 points.

The University of Miami leads the ACC with an 11-3 overall record and 3-0 in conference, posing a major challenge for SU. On Saturday, they beat Wake Forest 92-84.

The game will be broadcast Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Miami-Florida’s Watsco Center on the ACC Network at 8 p.m. ET. It can be streamed live on fuboTV, DirecTV Stream and other live TV services.

The Juice Online Season Record: 1-1 (ACC)

If you’ve listened to a Jim Boeheim press conference this year, you’re probably heard this one before. The Orange simply are not the same tough zone defense they’ve been throughout Boeheim’s tenure, evidenced by their 102.1 defensive efficiency rating per KenPom.com. In Boeheim’s own words they’ve been “horrendous.”

Now part of this can be attributed to the construction of this roster favoring players that can score over dominant defensive players, but the real problem has been defensive mistakes- players being out of position, missing assignments, and playing slow because of confusion.

Boeheim for his part, has acknowledged this fact, saying it’s “100% responsible for our record” which at 7-6 is the worst through 13 games of the Boeheim era. If the Orange can take extra time working on their assignments leading up to this game, we should see less of the sloppy mistakes.

SLOW DOWN KAMERON MCGUSTY

On the subject of defense, the Orange will have to contend with a rolling Hurricane team led by the play of Kameron McGusty.

McGusty is on a tear his last two games, both ACC victories at home, averaging 17.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. McGusty has done most of his damage as a shooter (42.1% from the field, 42.0% from three), so Syracuse will have to be sure to tighten up the holes they’re leaving in the high post- too often the Achilles heel for the defense this year.

Syracuse Basketball: More Big East battles are arriving for the Orange (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball may have bolted the Big East Conference for the Atlantic Coast Conference in the 2013-14 campaign, but the Orange continues to pile up encounters versus former Big East rivals.

Word broke on Tuesday that Syracuse basketball will be among the participants in the 2022 Empire Classic, according to a report from CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, who cited several sources in his article.

Rothstein said that the Orange, St. John’s, Temple and a fourth team to be determined later on will suit up in this tournament. While Rothstein notes that the event will occur next November, the tournament’s location, official dates and match-ups are not yet known.

This is an intriguing field so far, as the ‘Cuse, St. John’s and Temple are among the all-time winningest programs in the history of college basketball.

Syracuse basketball will join an entertaining line-up at the 2022 Empire Classic.

For some context, the 2021 Empire Classic featured then-No. 1 Gonzaga beating then-No. 2 UCLA, along with other participants Bellarmine and Central Michigan.

Historically, this tournament has been played at Madison Square Garden in New York City, although the 2021 Empire Classic was in Las Vegas.

Plans for first Syracuse-area location for well-known supermarket still on (PS; Doran)

A proposal to bring a Hannaford supermarket to the Syracuse area is still happening, though with changes to answer initial concerns about traffic and other complaints.

Two years ago, a proposal to put the well-known supermarket chain’s first store in Onondaga County was announced, but the project never got off the ground.

That proposal included a Hannaford grocery store, a 37,000-square-foot memory care center and another small building designed for health care. The project targeted for 547 E. Genesee St. in Fayetteville ran into so many obstacles that Millstone Development withdrew its application. Traffic, density and neighborhood opposition all played a role.

Since then, another developer, Northwood Real Estate Ventures LLC, has stepped in with a scaled-down proposal that only involves the Hannaford grocery store. The remaining land would be turned over to the village for a park, said Matt Lester of Fairport-based Northwood.

The new proposal calls for the grocery store to be about 56,000 square feet in a site once home to the former O’Brien & Gere manufacturing facility. The store would likely go into part of an O’Brien & Gere building, which is more than 135,000 square feet.

The new proposal doesn’t require a zone change, and Lester said they plan to reuse at least part of the existing building. “We will do conform with whatever is required in the village code,’' he said.

The proposed store still needs site plan approval from the village, but Lester hopes that won’t be a problem. The developer also will clean up and remediate the site, which is designated a brownfield, Lester said.

The property is in need of environmental remediation because of contamination caused by Accurate Die Casting years ago.

“The other developer had an incredibly difficult time with the larger project, so we’re going with just the grocery store,’' Lester said.

The remaining 15 acres or so would be given to the village for a park.

The project will be discussed next at the Fayetteville planning board’s Feb. 7 meeting, Fayetteville officials said. There will be a public hearing at some point during the review process, officials said.
