Welcome to National Flip Flop Day!

Sandals resembling the erstwhile flip flops have been around for many years. While the earliest recorded sandals come from Egypt, all cultures during Ancient times had their own variant of this footwear. The sandals worn by the Ancient Greeks and Romans had the strap between the second and third toe, Mesopotamians’ sandals showed the strap resting between the first and second toe, and the Indian ‘chappals’ used a knob in place of the strap. These olden versions were made from a variety of materials – papyrus leaves, palm leaves, leather, wood, rice straw.

The design of the modern-day sandal is inspired by the Japanese ‘zori.’ The Encyclopedia of History of Japanese Manners and Customs states Japanese children used these flip flop-type shoes when first learning to walk. Returning Americans brought the zori back from Japan at the end of the Second World War, as novelty items for loved ones.

Syracuse’s 2-3 Zone Appeals To Top 2024 Center Target – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)

With the 2023 recruiting cycle and the summer mercury heating up, we’re already seeing some of the nation’s top talent fall into place on the recruiting trail. SU can wave goodbye to former targets like GG Jackson and Blue Cain. In their stead, other doors have opened up, like the suddenly contentious battle between ‘Cuse and Duke for the services of center JP Estrella.

We’ve written a fair bit about Estrella in recent days, mainly because he’s been a quick riser on recruiting boards that the Orange have paid attention to for quite some time. Estrella’s position – center – isn’t a pressing one of need this season, but there’s question marks beyond 2022-23 after Jesse Edwards’ Syracuse career comes to a close. That’s why Jim Boeheim and his staff have done their due diligence on a premier center in the Class of ‘24: Yves Missi.

Missi, who stands at 6’10”, 210 and hails from Cameroon, is a current 4-star in his class. He currently stacks up as 247Sports’ No. 31 overall prospect in the nation. At the time of this writing, Missi is one of five Class of ‘24 players to have already received an offer from SU, but ‘Cuse is hardly the only school pursuing him. Missi also has offers from UCLA, Baylor, Kansas, Indiana, and others.

Missi has also cleaned up in AAU ball with the PSA Cardinals in Nike’s EYBL league. In an interview with Zagsblog.com’s Jacob Polachek, PSA head coach Terrance Williams had high praise for his center.

“Yves is one of the best players in his class…His upside and skill set puts him in position where he should be playing basketball for a long time.” (Terrance Williams to Jacob Polachek, 6/10/22)
Perhaps even more noteworthy is Missi’s comments on zone defenses. Though he’s offered limited soundbytes on the subject, he supplied a big one when he pointed to Syracuse as a program that plays a scheme he “enjoys”.

“The best defense I compare with is the zone defense, playing around the middle.” (Missi to Zagsblog.com, 6/10/22)

Five things to know about Boeheim’s Army’s quest to repeat as TBT champs (PS; Ditota)

Boeheim’s Army dropped its 2022 roster Wednesday afternoon. It’s a team studded with former Syracuse stars and fan favorites, with a dash of outsider intrigue.

The roster, as it looks today (the team may add players up to 72 hours before its first game): Tyler Ennis, Rakeem Christmas, Marek Dolezaj, CJ Fair, Andrew White, Deandre Kane, DJ Kennedy, Kyle Wiltjer, Dee Bost.

Boeheim’s Army will play “home” games at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena. Those games are scheduled for July 22-25. Tickets are already being sold.

Here are five interesting things about TBT at this point:

Jim Boeheim had input on the roster
, said Boeheim’s Army chairman Adam Weitsman and general manager Kevin Belbey. The two Boeheim’s Army roster constructors would offer names they were considering for the team and Boeheim would weigh in.

“If Kevin and I are in a stalemate, we usually have Coach break the stalemate about a certain guy or a certain position or does Coach think the person is mentally committed to play,” Weitsman said.

The Boeheim's Army roster is out. Marek Dolezaj, Rakeem Christmas, Tyler Ennis, and many more fan favorites will be representing Syracuse basketball once again. Matt Bonaparte and Brad Klein agree that it may be the best roster the Syracuse alumni squad has ever fielded. But the two biggest fans of The Basketball Tournament determine if any deserving SU hoopers were left off the team.

Dinner at The Loft at Vesper Hills, Tully, N.Y. (Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gmail.com)

Yak burgers and gorgeous views at The Loft at Vesper Hills (Dining Out Review) (PS; Paventi)

So, what sets apart the menu at The Loft at Vesper Hills in Tully from other golf course or burger-and-beer restaurants in the area? It’s a three-letter word.

Yak.

Owners Mark and Suzanne Drumm bought the golf course on Octagon Road in 2012, committing to extensive renovations of the property, including the clubhouse and restaurant. The couple already owned a nearby alpaca farm and added yaks to their brood in 2014. Their Bentwood Alpacas and Yaks farm supplies yak meat for the menu, which finds itself utilized in various menu items, including chili, meatballs and burgers.

The first two items were unavailable for our recent Friday evening visit, so our only option was in burger form. In order to get a full flavor of this exotic meat, we ordered a simple cheeseburger with cheddar cheese ($17).

The menu likens yak to chicken in terms of nutritional benefits: low in cholesterol and saturated fat. It’s a very lean meat, so you don’t get juiciness from the rendered fat, but it’s not dry or crumbly either. In fact, the menu recommends burgers served rare or medium-rare for this reason.

It has a distinct flavor. A variety of websites and news articles compare it to bison, but with a lighter, more subtle flavor. I found the burger’s flavor to be earthy with nutty notes, different than the average beef burger or a game meat like elk.

All nine burgers on the menu, including the Jamming Sunset burger, can be made with yak meat for an additional $4. This particular burger ($14) is a fork-and-knife effort. The 8 oz. burger, made with Angus reserve beef, was grilled and topped with pepper jack cheese, bacon jam and roasted garlic aioli. It covered many of the flavor bases with spicy cheese, sweet and smoky bacon jam and the earthy, creamy aioli. It was also a pretty sloppy endeavor, as the jam and aioli mixed with the burger’s juices to become a quick mess. It’s not a complaint so much as a warning, as my dining companion thought it was well executed.

Holden Mansion (syracusethenandnnow.com)

Charles Demarest Holden was a local coal dealer and vice-president of the board of trustees at Syracuse University. This picture was taken in the early 1960's, just before the house was torn down to make way for a motel. When the motel went out of business, it was converted to an assisted living facility.
