Welcome to National Chicken Wing Day!

Hot, spicy, plain, sticky, or sweet, it seems Americans never have enough chicken wings to eat. In fact, they eat about 30 billion of them per year. Wings come in numerous flavors, such as lemon pepper, pepper parmesan, barbecue, honey mustard, sweet and sour, and garlic. They are often dipped in blue cheese, ranch dressing, or plum sauce, and are served with celery sticks and carrot sticks.

The most famous are Buffalo wings, which were invented in Buffalo, New York. Fittingly, National Chicken Wing Day was proclaimed by Buffalo Mayor Stan Makowski in 1977. Buffalo wings are deep-fried without any breading, and then coated or dipped in a vinegar-based cayenne pepper hot sauce and melted butter. They are usually served with blue cheese dressing or ranch dressing, and with carrot sticks and celery sticks.

2023 four-star JP Estrella cancelled his official visit to Duke just a week before his visit to the Hill. Brad Klein brought Sports Illustrated Syracuse's Mike McAllister on to discuss what this means for Syracuse basketball.

Reid Ducharme Named All Peach Jam First Team (yardbarker.com; McAllister)

Syracuse basketball recruiting target Reid Ducharme was named to the All Peach Jam First Team after a strong conclusion to the AAU season. Ducharme averaged 21.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.4 steals from July 17th to the 24th. That includes a 42 point outburst on 15-25 shooting including 6-11 from three point range and 6-7 from the free throw line in 32 minutes of BABC's 88-60 win over Vegas Elite. At least one member of Syracuse's coaching staff was at nearly all of his games this AAU season, including having as many as three in some instances.

The class of 2023 shooting guard plays for Brewster Academy in high school and is one of the best shooters this cycle. Ducharme took official visits to Penn State, Syracuse and Xavier in June. He is looking to make a final decision prior to the start of his senior season.

"I was able to workout with the players," Ducharme said after his Syracuse visit. "I did that both days. I had meetings with academic advisors. I looked at the Faulk school, that was pretty interesting. They have an NIL class that they just started, so I like that. Had meetings with coach. We went to coach Boeheim's house for a barbecue with the pool and lawn games and the players. That was fun."

Latest Twist In The JP Estrella Saga Favors SU – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)

We’re just a few days shy of August, and Syracuse men’s hoops has still yet to net its first Class of 2023 commit. No matter how good a thing you believe that is to keep the structural integrity of SU’s high-powered Class of ‘22 intact, the Orange would certainly like to swing a player or two before we inch closer to the Fall.

Despite Syracuse’s limited number of targets in the upcoming class, the Orange have had to enter battles with some high-powered squads. 4-star guard Elmarko Jackson has an SU offer along with interest from UCLA, Michigan, and Villanova, and 3-star guard Elijah Gertrude is being pursued by both defending national champion Kansas and ACC rival Virginia. There’s good news on one front, though: the latest development on the recruiting trail for 4-star center JP Estrella.

Duke Recruiting: JP Estrella Cancels Visit (DBR; King)

Things got hot and heavy with Duke and JP Estrella for awhile but have they cooled?

The tea leaves aren’t looking good, notably because he canceled his official visit. Of course it’s possible that he could visit again later, but who knows?

For people who are worrying about Duke not having a big man, we’d like to remind that a), it’s still early and b) Christian Reeves will be out of sight as a redshirt but a lot of people think he’s going to be really good.

Maybe that plays into it with Estrella. It’s really hard to say because recruits are always young, they have their own ideas, and sometimes it’s a thought that most of us would never consider.

One guy, for instance, had an offer from a major school and decided to pass. When he was asked why, he told the coach that his number was already retired and he didn’t want to play in a different one. To us that might seem silly but to him, it was everything.

Rising Guard Elijah Gertrude is Major Piece in Syracuse’s Recruiting Wars – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

Elijah Gertrude is on Syracuse’s turf. He’s a star on the Albany City Rocks AAU team. He’s a dynamic playmaker for Jersey City-based Hudson Catholic. And he’s being recruited by a slew of SU’s most important recruiting rivals. This one is a big one for the Orange, and Jim Boeheim knows it. At Peach Jam, SU had Boeheim, Red Autry and Gerry McNamara all watch his games. They know he’s a crucial piece of the recruiting puzzle.

Gertrude is a combo guard in the ’23 class, rated as a 3-star player at the moment and a the 21st best at his position according to 247 Sports. But his recent production and late start means the recruiting world is waiting for him to jump up in the ratings. Most believe he’ll be a 4-star, top 50 player in due time.

This means SU needs to capitalize. He fits the Orange scheme perfectly, the type of lengthy wing player SU has feasted on for decades. He told Adam Zagoria, “The zone, they feel that I can play well in that zone that they run… They got guys in the NBA sort of like me, long guys that play that zone, get out in transition and get a couple dunks.”

MBB: All-Time Tiers

If you were ranking all-time college basketball teams by tiers, how would you do it? Here's how CBKReport did it:

All-Time #CollegeBasketball Tier List #MarchMadness pic.twitter.com/GRtJAyiXpj
— CBKReport - Parker Hamann (@CBKReport) July 28, 2022
Does this make sense? Let's break it down...
Tier 1: UNC, Duke
no question - those are basketball royalty
Tier 2: Syracuse, Louisville
agreed - these two are just one notch below Duke and UNC
Tier 3: none
I'm ok with no ACC teams here, but some of the ones they put in tier 3 really belong in tier 5, IMO.

Virginia Basketball: Two 2024 Targets Set to Visit UVA This Week - Sports Illustrated Virginia Cavaliers News, Analysis and More (SI; Newton)

This has been a busy week for the Virginia men's basketball program on the recruiting front. As the Cavaliers prepare to host Elijah Gertrude (Jersey City, NJ), one of their top targets in the class of 2023, on Grounds this week, Tony Bennett has also extended two new offers to 2023 guards Trey Green (Branson, MO) and Davin Cosby (Richmond, VA).

The recruiting cycle for the class of 2023 is heating up, but that has not prevented Tony Bennett and the UVA coaching staff from beginning to recruit the class of 2024. Virginia will have two additional visitors in Charlottesville this week from the class of 2024.

Juke Harris, a 6'4" combo guard from Salisbury, North Carolina, will reportedly take a visit to UVA on August 1st.

Harris currently has offers from more than 21 programs, including Georgetown, Houston, Illinois, NC State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, VCU, Virginia Tech and several others.

UVA will also host 6'7" power forward Caleb Williams out of Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C. on August 4th.

Williams has been offered by a handful of programs, with Villanova, Virginia Tech, Indiana, Maryland, Penn State, Georgia Tech, Georgetown, and Penn extending offers so far.

Williams will be visiting Virginia for the second time this summer, as he took a visit to Charlottesville on June 21st. He also took a visit to Maryland in June.

Neither Juke Harris nor Caleb Williams have been officially offered by Virginia yet, but those offers could come as early as next week after they complete their visits.

UNC to face Michigan in Jumpman Invitational (usatoday; Lasley)

In another notable non-conference matchup for the UNC basketball program, the Tar Heels will square off against Michigan in the inaugural Jumpman Invitational this year. The game is scheduled for Dec. 21 at 7 pm ET.

The event will take place in Charlotte, with the women’s teams facing each other as well, the night before.

Oklahoma will face Florida on Dec. 20 at 9:30 pm ET, as the other mens teams involved.

UNC will face Michigan for the fifth time in six seasons. Most recently, the Tar Heels defeated Michigan in Chapel Hill last year, 72-51, in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Caleb Love led the Tar Heels with 22 points, while Armando Bacot had 11 points and 14 rebounds. North Carolina held Michigan big man Hunter Dickinson, who returns for the Wolverines, to just four points and five rebounds.

Syracuse University to drop mask requirement, halt mandatory Covid testing (PS; Mulder)

Syracuse University will drop its mask requirement on campus Aug. 15 regardless of the vaccination status of students, staff and visitors.

The change announced today is part of revised public health guidelines for the fall semester. The new guidelines recognize that “... for the foreseeable future, Covid-19 will represent a concern that is endemic to life on a college campus,” SU said in a letter to students and employees.

Masks will still be required on public transportation and in health care facilities in keeping with state Health Department rules.

SU said it strongly encourages all members of the campus community to consider masking based on an assessment of personal risk, especially when in large groups, high-density areas of campus, or after being exposed to a Covid-positive individual.

SU will continue to require all students and staff to be vaccinated against Covid unless they have approved religious or medical exemptions.

The school will halt mandatory Covid surveillance testing on campus.

Downtown Syracuse festival returns with bacon, bacon and more bacon (PS; Cazentre)

Thick cut or thin cut. Crispy or soft. Applewood smoked or maple infused.

However you like your bacon, you’ll want to check out the Syracuse Bacon Festival in downtown Syracuse’s Clinton Square. The fest takes place noon to 10 p.m. both Friday, Aug. 12, and Saturday, Aug. 13.

This is the first year since the festival started in 2017 that it will have lunchtime hours, according to Carrie Wojtaszek, chief operating officer at Galaxy Media / Galaxy Events, the fest promoter.

It will also have a record number of food vendors — more than 20. All must offer at least one item featuring bacon (that includes those offering both savory and “sweet” foods).

“I think a lot of the vendors are excited to be able to offer lunch,” Wojtaszek said. “Especially now that there are more people downtown.”

There are also wine and beer tents, and several under vendors, plus an “activity zone,” live music and more.

The Syracuse Bacon Festival also has a new “title” sponsor: Smithfield Brands, a Virginia-based supplier that has been a participant in the event in the past.
