Welcome to Women's Equality Day!

Women's Equality Day commemorates the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment, which prohibits denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex. Prior to its adoption, women were not guaranteed the right to vote on the national level. The first time an amendment dedicated to women's suffrage was introduced was in 1878, and similar amendments were introduced numerous times over the next 41 years until the House and Senate both approved the amendment in 1919. Then it needed to be approved by two-thirds of the states, and it was lobbied for by suffragists. On August 24, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state—and final state needed—to ratify it. On August 26, 1920, Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby signed a proclamation that added the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution.

Fifty years to the day later, The National Organization for Women, led by Betty Friedan, held the Women's Strike for Equality. The day was known by some as Women's Equality Day. It was the largest protest for gender equality in United States history up until that time. Protests and rallies were held in more than 90 cities, with 100,000 women participating. In New York City alone, 50,000 women marched down Fifth Avenue.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star guard soars in rankings, will officially visit SU (itlh; Adler)

Fast-rising 2023 guard Mike Williams has made a large leap in the national rankings for his class, and media reports say that he plans to take an official visit to Syracuse basketball in mid-September.

Of course, it’s terrific news that the 6-foot-4 Williams will be traveling to the Hill, although at the same time his stock in the 2023 cycle is skyrocketing. As such, his scholarship offer sheet is also expanding.

According to 247Sports national analyst Travis Branham, the four-star Williams is expected to make an official visit to the Orange on September 16.

2023 CG Mike Williams of @TeamThrillUAA has scheduled the following visits, his coach tells @247Sports.
September 2nd: Clemson
September 8th: DePaul
September 16th: Syracuse
September 23rd: Wake Forest
September 30th: VCU (unofficial)
October 22nd: LSU
— Travis Branham (@TravisBranham_) August 18, 2022

Per Branham, Williams between September and October will also take official visits to Clemson, DePaul, Wake Forest and LSU, as well as an unofficial visit to VCU.

Ducharme commits to Xavier; Class of 2023 recruit had SU offer (PS; $; Waters)

Reid Ducharme, a top-100 prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, announced on Thursday he will attend Xavier University.

Ducharme chose Xavier from a group of three finalists that included Syracuse and Penn State. Ducharme, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, is ranked No. 97 in the ‘23 class by 247Sports.com.

Ducharme had taken official visits to all three of his final schools in June, including a trip to Syracuse on June 17-18. Before trimming his list down to the three schools, Ducharme also had scholarship offers from a host of others, including Creighton, Connecticut, DePaul, Northwestern and Providence.

Mike McAllister "On the Block" 8-25 (ESPN; radio; Axe)

Mike McAllister of Syracuse on SI returns to the show to discuss 2023 SG Reid Ducharme’s commitment to Xavier over the Orange and other Class of 2023 recruitment news.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange misses out on four-star wing Reid Ducharme (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball remains without a commitment in the 2023 recruiting cycle, after four-star wing Reid Ducharme picked another one of his suitors on Thursday afternoon.

In an announcement that he held with 247Sports, the 6-foot-6 Ducharme said that his future collegiate home would be Big East Conference member Xavier. The consensus four-star, top-100 prospect had a final three of the Orange, Xavier and Penn State.

It’s a bummer that this talented shooting guard/small forward is headed somewhere besides the ‘Cuse, although his selection of the Musketeers isn’t super surprising. In mid-July, On3 national analyst Jamie Shaw logged a prediction for Xavier in Ducharme’s recruitment.

Wings at Duskees. (Danielle Benjamin | Contributing Writer)

Superior wings and cheap drinks make Duskees a must-visit (Dining Out Review) (PS; $; Benjamin)

Local foodies have been raving about the chicken wings at Duskees, so we gave it a try on an early Friday afternoon. The atmosphere was dark, but welcoming. Syracuse sports murals and New York Yankees decor filled the walls, making us feel right at home.

A quick glance around the bar informed us that the beer selection included a good variety of options. There were mass-produced lagers (Yuengling, Bud Light), nationally-loved craft beers (Sloop Juice Bomb, Sierra Nevada Hazy Little Thing), and local favorites (Big Ditch, Talking Cursive). Even better, they offer beer flights — an unusual option for a sports bar. But the best part? Duskees shares when the draft lines were last cleaned. Because let’s be honest, no one wants a pint poured from a dirty beer line.

The guys opted for beers to start, a Yuengling draft ($4) and a can of Bud Light ($2). You can’t beat those prices. The most expensive beers on the menu were from the craft breweries, coming in at a mere $6 per 16-ounce can.

The girls chose cocktails off the seasonal menu, curious to try the bar’s original concoctions. The monthly specials were all fruity, featuring different flavored liquors. I chose the “Absolutely Peachy” ($5), made with peach purée, vodka, whiskey and unsweetened iced tea. While I would have preferred something on the sweeter side, my friend loved it.
