Analyzing Syracuse’s ACC schedule: Key games, tough stretches and how it could impact attendance (PS; $; Waters)
Around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Syracuse fans begin scribbling notes on their desk calendars and checking their phones as the ACC released its 2022-23 men’s basketball schedule.
Plans were made. Dates were circled. Alarms and reminders were set.
While the ACC had long ago announced the round-robin of opponents to be played at home or on the road, fans finally had dates for specific games.
Tuesday’s release also provides an opportunity to analyze the key games, tough stretches and potential ramifications of the ACC schedule. In some cases, the ramifications are significant.
Here is a breakdown of Syracuse’s ACC schedule:
Toughest stretch
The Orange will hit a brutal stretch of games in mid-January with five out of seven games on the road. Wedged in between those five road tests are two extremely tough home games.
The gauntlet begins with back-to-back road games at Miami and Georgia Tech. Then the Orange returns to the Dome to play North Carolina. Then it’s back on the road to Virginia Tech, which is always a tough place to play.
Back home, Syracuse will host Virginia, which is expected to be one of the ACC’s top teams next season. And then the Orange caps the run with two more road games ― at Boston College and at Florida State.
Gimme a break
Every team in the ACC gets an open weekend at some point during the conference schedule. The Orange’s comes at a time when the team could be in need of a break, right as that rough seven-game stretch with five road games comes to an end.After playing at Florida State on Wednesday, Feb. 8, the Orange will have off until a home game on Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) against N.C. State. That gives Syracuse the weekend of Feb. 10-11 to recuperate.
A late run for the Orange?
In past years, Syracuse has had some difficult closing slates. Last season, the Orange’s last four regular season games were at Notre Dame, home against Duke, at North Carolina and home against Miami. Syracuse lost all four.Two years ago, the finishing stretch was at Duke and at Georgia Tech followed by home games against North Carolina and Clemson. (The Clemson game was a late addition to make up for a game postponed due to Covid.)
Well, after enduring some rigorous early season scheduling, the Orange could be in position to make a late-season push in 2023.

Orange Watch: A look at the 2022-23 Syracuse basketball schedule - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)
Item: The 2022-23 Syracuse basketball schedule was finalized Tuesday with the ACC announcing the composite 20-game conference schedule dates for all 15 teams (game times and TV coverage to be announced next month).
As expected, Syracuse will open up league play with a road game Saturday, December 3 against Notre Dame, because the Dome is booked that weekend with the New York State Public High School Association football championship games.
The Notre Dame game follows SU’s road meeting against Illinois (Tuesday, November 29) in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge series, making for a ‘challenging’ week early in the season.
The Orange’s remaining 19 ACC games are sandwiched around two home games in late December against Pittsburgh (December 20) and Boston College (December 30 or 31), and two home games to end the regular season against Georgia Tech (February 28) and Wake Forest (March 4).
In between, the highlighted Dome games are against Duke (February 18) on what will likely be a Saturday night matchup, one of only four Saturday ACC home games SU plays the entire season, and North Carolina (January 24) a Tuesday evening game,
Syracuse will have four instances where it plays two consecutive conference games on the road, and two quick Saturday-to-Monday turnarounds with ‘Big Monday’ games at Miami (January 16) and hosting Virginia (January 30).
SU will have one weekend off (February 11-12), which this year happens to be the weekend Super Bowl LVII is contested in Glendale, Ariz.
The ACC Tournament returns to Greensboro this year in its four-year rotation. If Syracuse qualifies for the NCAA Tournament, is placed in the East Region and advances, the Orange could never have to leave the state until the Final Four in Houston with first/second round games in Albany, and the regionals being hosted at Madison Square Garden.

Syracuse basketball is looking to bounce back from its first losing season in over 50 years. The Orange has an intriguing roster with returning contributors such as Jesse Edwards, Joe Girard, Symir Torrence and Benny Williams along with a plethora of incoming talent. On Tuesday, the ACC released the conference schedule, which completed Syracuse’s 2022-23 slate. Here is a look at the schedule.

Syracuse Basketball: 2023 big could decide soon, transfers to N.J. power (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball 2023 recruiting target William Patterson could announce his commitment choice in the coming weeks, according to a media report.
The 7-foot power forward/center, a Brooklyn, N.Y., native, received a scholarship offer from the Orange coaching staff in late August, around the time that he attended the team’s annual Elite Camp.
According to recruiting services, his offer sheet includes Rutgers, Oklahoma State and TCU. A recent article from Brian Reichert of nychoops. notes that Patterson has also landed offers from UCF and Bryant.
Following his offer from the ‘Cuse, Patterson said he’s high on Syracuse basketball, and Reichert echoed that sentiment in his story, adding that the fast-rising big man could make a college decision in the next few weeks.
Syracuse basketball is firmly in the mix for 2023 big man William Patterson.
As a junior, Patterson played for the Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland, Md., which is a member of the loaded 10-team National Interscholastic Basketball Conference.
However, per Reichert, Patterson will spend his senior year at The Patrick School in Hillside, N.J., which is often one of the best high-school groups in the state of New Jersey.
Another prospect on The Patrick School roster is 2024 four-star wing James Moore. The 6-foot-9 Moore also attended the Orange’s recent Elite Camp, and media reports indicate that Syracuse basketball coaches are showing interest in this top-50 national prospect.
In early September, long-time ‘Cuse recruiting target Joseph Estrella, a 2023 four-star big man, picked Tennessee. Orange coaches, looking to pick up a power forward/center in this cycle, as such recently offered both Patterson and 2023 four-star big man Drew Fielder.
The 6-foot-9 Fielder, a rapidly rising power forward/center, recently jumped into the top 100 according to new 2023 rankings from The Circuit. He is a senior at the Southern California Academy in Northridge, Calif.

New York Mets ace Max Scherzer is scheduled to make a rehab start Wednesday night for the Syracuse Mets, the club has announced.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner experienced discomfort on his left side, forcing him to miss his last scheduled start with New York last week. He was sidelined for more than a month earlier this season with a left oblique injury.
Scherzer made two rehab starts with Double-A Binghamton earlier this summer. At the time, the Mets opted to have him travel to Hartford, Connecticut, rather than make an appearance with the Triple-A club in Syracuse.
Scherzer, 38, is 9-4 with a 2.26 ERA in 20 starts during his first season with the Mets.
