Welcome to Ben Franklin Day!

Founding Father Benjamin Franklin was born on this day in 1706, in Boston, making today Ben Franklin Day. He was a polymath, or expert in many subjects. Some of the titles that could be given to him are inventor, scientist, politician, diplomat, civic activist, printer, author, postmaster, and mapmaker. He also founded or was a part of many organizations and groups.

Franklin was the tenth and youngest son of a soap and candle maker, Josiah Franklin, and Josiah's second wife, Abiah Folger. The elder Franklin wanted his son to follow the path of a preacher, but did not have the money to send him to school. Benjamin only attended school up until the age of ten, when he began working full-time in his father's shop. At the age of twelve he was sent to apprentice his older brother James, who was a printer. James started The New England Courant in Boston when Benjamin was fifteen. Benjamin wanted to be printed in the paper, but James would not allow it. So, he wrote letters under name of Silence Dogood, a fictional widow, and slid them under the print shop door at night. The fourteen letters he wrote were published; they gave advice and were filled with critical observations of the world. Benjamin eventually confessed to writing them, and James was not happy. Later, after harassment and beating at the hands of his brother, Benjamin ended up running away to New York, and then ended up in Philadelphia in 1723.

Syracuse Orange guard Joseph Girard III (11) falls to the floor as he fires a shot over Miami (Fl) Hurricanes forward Norchad Omier (15) as the Syracuse Orange took on the Miami Hurricanes Monday January 16, 2023 at Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Florida. N. Scott Trimble | strimble@syracuse.com

How Joe Girard scored 21 points in Syracuse’s loss to Miami: ‘He’s not 6-11. He shouldn’t be able to do that to us’ (PS; $; Waters)

Joe Girard backed Miami guard Nijel Pack down toward the basket, bumping his Miami defender once, twice and then a third time before turning to drop in a soft fadeaway shot reminiscent of Dirk Nowitski or some other big forward.

The 6-foot-1 Girard repeated the move time after time in Syracuse’s game against the Hurricanes here at the Watsco Center on Monday.

Girard, a player who lives outside the 3-point line, scored 16 of his 21 points on shots in the lane against Miami.

“Joe is not 6-11,’’ Miami coach Jim Larranaga said. “He shouldn’t be able to do that to us, but he’s very clever. He backed Nijel Pack in several times, drew two fouls on him, made both shots. Then he did the same things to Bensley Joseph. He tried to do it throughout the game because he was enjoying a lot of success with it.’’

Girard combatted Miami’s pressure defense with a rarely seen portion of his repertoire.

The Syracuse senior has scored over half of his 1,447 career points on 3-pointers. He ranks fifth in SU history with 263 made 3-pointers; a figure that also puts him in a tie with former Virginia star Joe Harris for 24th on the ACC’s all-time list.

Another Collapse against the ‘Canes: SU basketball loses to Miami (Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)

The Syracuse University men’s basketball team let another big one slip off the dock and back in the water on Monday night.

Syracuse, which once held a 10 point-lead on the No. 17 Miami Hurricanes at the Watsco Center, lost 82-78 on a series of second half miscues.

A bulk of the mistakes were committed by Judah Mintz, who finally looked like a freshman after spending most of the season playing beyond his years as SU’s aggressive point guard.

Monday’s loss to the Hurricanes cost Syracuse a chance at a desperately needed Quadrant 1 win and continued a crumbling trend against Miami.

Syracuse blew an 18-point lead to Miami in the 2021-22 regular season finale and lost 75-72.

Earlier last season, the Orange held a 44-30 halftime lead over Miami, but lost that game 88-87.

Add another close-but-can’t-close-it loss for the Orange against the Hurricanes to the ledger.

The Dark Side

Syracuse Men’s basketball 2022-23: Syracuse vs. Miami

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim encourages on Syracuse Orange guard Judah Mintz (3) as he re-enters the game in the final moments as the Syracuse Orange took on the Miami Hurricanes Monday January 16, 2023 at Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Florida. N. Scott Trimble | strimble@syracuse.com

The Mintz Mistakes

The mistakes piled on one after the other in the second half for Mintz and were a key ingredient in SU’s loss. He had five of SU’s nine turnovers against the Hurricanes and scored just three points.

Miami took its first lead of the second half (71-70) on a breakaway layup by Harlond Beverly with 3:43 remaining that was fed by Mintz’s fourth turnover of the game.

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim called a timeout after this play and should have put Mintz on the bench in favor of Symir Torrence. Mintz was visibly shaken and simply did not belong on the court at that point.

Miami Makes Late Comeback, Defeats Syracuse 82-78 (SI; Staff)

The Miami Hurricanes found their groove, albeit late in the contest, to knock off the Syracuse Orange 82-78. For a long time, it looked like Syracuse would find a way to win at the Watsco Center.

Miami trailed 38-34 at halftime, as the Syracuse offense started to gel behind talented guard Joseph Girard III creating shots, and big man Jesse Edwards being a dominant in-the-paint scorer with his 6-foot-11 and 230-pound frame.
https://www.kargo.com/privacy
The bigger problem for the Hurricanes in the first half was star guard Isaiah Wong had picked up two quick fouls and took a seat on the bench until after halftime. Miami’s offense went through some funks that didn’t normally happen without the sharpshooter on the court.

Fortunately for head coach Jim Larranaga and his Miami team, off the bench came guard Harold Beverly. He knocked down 16 points on the evening, including 8-8 from the free throw line. The latter was an overall theme for the Canes during their win.

As a team, Miami shot 26-29 for 89.3% from the foul line. That incredible statistic was the difference in securing the victory. To get to the foul line though, the defense of the Hurricanes needed to play better down the stretch so that they could attack the basket more.

Five Takeaways: Miami 82 Syracuse 78 (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse fell at #17 Miami 82-78 Monday night. Here are five takeaways from the loss.

1. Judah Mintz

The star freshman point guard had his worst game in a Syracuse uniform. He finished 1-7 shooting, 1-3 from the free throw line with five turnovers to go along with six assists. It was a struggle all night for Mintz, who tried to force the issue too many times and committed more than half of the team's turnovers. Often in critical moments. Mintz has been superb all season, so this is more the exception than the rule and can happen with true freshmen. The worst moment was when Syracuse was trailing by two with the ball with under a minute to go. It appeared as if the play was supposed to go Joe Girard, but instead Mintz drove into traffic and threw up a shot that had no chance. He will learn from this. He will grow from this. But even a below average performance from Mintz and Syracuse wins this game

2. Rebounding

Syracuse controlled the boards for most of the night. Over the final seven minutes, Miami out-rebounded Syracuse 11 to two. Seven of those rebounds were offensive, which led to seven Hurricanes' points. That cost the Orange the game as much as anything. Overall Syracuse lost the battle 40 to 36, but prior to the last seven minutes held a 34-29 lead and held Miami to just nine offensive boards. Down the stretch, Syracuse could not get a rebound especially on the defensive end.

Syracuse basketball lets a key quadrant-one win slip away at No. 17 Miami (itlh; Adler)

A year ago, Syracuse basketball let 18-point leads wither away against Miami in the 2021-22 regular season, with the Hurricanes emerging with two close victories. And a similar scenario occurred on Monday night in the Sunshine State.

The Orange fell behind 11-2 early on to the No. 17 Hurricanes on Monday evening, but then the ‘Cuse righted the ship and went up by four points at halftime. Then, in the second half, Syracuse basketball built up another double-digit lead over Miami, this time by 11 points.

However, down the stretch, the Hurricanes chipped away at their deficit, buoyed by some 3-point shooting, second-chance opportunities via the offensive glass, getting to the free-throw line, and forcing the Orange into costly turnovers.

The result, on Monday night at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla., was an 82-78 triumph for Miami (15-3, 6-2 in the ACC). By extension, Syracuse basketball missed out on a golden opportunity to pick up a much-needed quadrant-one victory in the present 2022-23 campaign.

I’m not going to lie. This loss really stings. Entering this Atlantic Coast Conference clash, the ‘Cuse had won two straight and nine of its past 11 affairs.

Now the Orange (12-7, 5-3) will have to regroup and get ready for another road date at Georgia Tech on Saturday, Jan. 21, with the tip-off scheduled for 12 pm and television coverage on ACC regional sports networks.

Big East Basketball power rankings: Villanova drops lower, St. John’s rises (bustingbrackets.com; Freeman)

Around 10 days ago, Big East Basketball had several teams still unbeaten early into league play. Since then, there have been a number of upsets, as well as some marquee matchups that went down to the wire. What looked like two clear tiers of teams now seem jumbled a bit.

There may be an idea of who the No. 1 and No. 11 teams are but where does everyone else slide in? Here are my latest power rankings for the Big East.

11. Georgetown Hoyas – 5-14 (0-8)

The streak of consecutive power conference losses continues for the Hoyas, who just can’t seem to get a win. Before Monday’s game against Villanova, Georgetown was coming off a 22-point loss to Marquette and a 15-point defeat to Seton Hall in the past week.

But on the road at Villanova, the Hoyas were finally competitive, even having a six-point lead in the final six minutes of the game. Yet in typical fashion, the team couldn’t hold onto it and had a rough offensive possession with a chance to tie the game that went awry.

Georgetown lost the game, 77-73. Primo Spears had 19 points and seven assists while playing all 40 minutes, while Brandon Murray had 18. In the end, the Hoyas just couldn’t find a way to win the game and are nearly halfway through league play without a single victory.

The next game for them will be tough, a road battle at Xavier. But after that are a pair of winnable games against St. John’s and DePaul. If they play as they did against Villanova, there’s a chance they can finally beat a Big East Basketball team.

Jimmy Boeheim on podcast: Greece, gyros, bicycles and texts from home (PS; Waters)

Jimmy Boeheim has been watching Syracuse basketball games his entire life. That hasn’t changed with Boeheim now playing professional basketball in Greece.

It’s just changed his viewing habits.

“Oh yeah, I’ve stayed up til 5 a.m. probably a couple times too many,’' Boeheim said during an appearance on the Inside Syracuse Basketball podcast. “Most of the games tip off at 3 a.m. here with the difference.’'

Boeheim is currently playing for AS Karditsas in the Greek Basketball League. It’s been a difficult season so far for Boeheim and his new team, which is in its first year in the GBL’s top tier after winning the second division title a year ago. Karditsas is off to a 1-10 start, while Boeheim is averaging 8.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

Boeheim, the son of Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, explained why he decided to go overseas and sign with Karditsas after finishing his college career at Syracuse last year.

Boeheim talked about adjusting to life overseas both on and off the court. On the court has meant dealing with a language barrier. Off the court, Boeheim has tried to get in some sight-seeing and he has expanded his eating habits, which has come as a surprise to his family back home.

Speaking of home, Boeheim said one of the most difficult times of the year was not being able to get home for Christmas.

But he keeps in touch with his parents and his brother and sister. They watch his games on a live stream. He described how the text messages from his mom differ from his dad’s.

This gives a better picture of the true strengths and weaknesses of these ACC teams than does the NET, in my humble opinion. For example, RPI puts Clemson at #35, while NET ranks the Tigers way down at #57! On the other hand, NET keeps hope a live for Virginia Tech, ranking the Hokies 56th; RPI is a little more realistic, having VT's NCAA dreams on life support at #61.

BG1, which opened last summer in Baldwinsville, is one of the participants in B'ville Dining Weeks. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

B’ville Dining Weeks returns this month with mid-winter deals (PS; Cazentre)

It’s a relatively small village with a fairly vibrant dining scene, and for the next few weeks you can find some deals if you eat out there.

B’ville Dining Weeks returns Jan. 16 to Feb. 5, with at least 15 participating restaurants. The deals vary to some extent, but the most common is a three-course dinner for $35. The restaurants are also offering special menu items.

B’ville Dining Weeks started in 2018, led by Jeff Rogers, owner of The Angry Garlic (and the soon-to-open Angry Smokehouse). It’s modeled on the better known Downtown Dining Weeks concept in Syracuse. Both aim to generate business for restaurants during what would otherwise be a slow winter season.

B’ville Dining Weeks is sponsored by Lorenzo’s Wholesale Foods, a Syracuse-based restaurant supplier.

Here are the participating restaurants and the special Dining Weeks menu (where available so far):

· Angry Garlic, 29 Oswego Street. Menu.
· Tassone’s Wine Garden, 8113 Dexter Parkway. Menu.
· Pizza Man, 50 Oswego Street. Menu.
· Sal’s Pizza, 41 E Genesee Street. Menu.
· Fireside Inn, 2347 West Genesee Road. Menu.
· Olive’s Eatery, 25 Syracuse Street.
· Canal Side Café & Bistro, 23 Syracuse Street. Menu.
· The Wood, 7439 Canton Street Road. Menu.
· San Miguel Mexican Bar & Grill, 2 Oswego Street. Menu.
· BG1, 1 West Genesee Street.
