Welcome to Diesel Engine Day!

We celebrate the diesel engine today, on the anniversary of the date it first received a patent. German engineer Rudolf Diesel came up with the engine after setting out to improve the efficiency of the Otto engine. He came to the conclusion that the electric ignition process in that engine and others could be done away with if air could be heated to at least its auto-ignition temperature. A patent for the diesel engine, German Patent 67207—titled "Arbeitsverfahren und Ausführungsart für Verbrennungsmaschinen," meaning "Working Methods and Techniques for Internal Combustion Engines"—was granted to him on February 23, 1893.

Tiger Trap: SU crushed by Clemson (Brent Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)

The ‘Cuse is collapsing as it comes down the stretch of the 2022-23 season.

The Syracuse University men’s basketball team lost 91-73 to Clemson on Wednesday night at Littlejohn Coliseum. The 91 points surrendered to the Tigers was the most Syracuse has given up this season.

Syracuse has lost its last two games by an average of 20 points.

Clemson scored 13 of the first 16 points and never looked back. A 14-2 run midway through the first quarter put Syracuse in a hole it couldn’t climb out of, much like a 21-2 run by Duke on Saturday night spelled out the party was over before it began for the Orange.

Jim Boeheim’s 2-3 zone was ripped to shreds by the Tigers. Clemson was the 14th opponent to hit 10 or more 3′s against the Orange this season.

We don’t know how much worse man-to-man (or any other defense for that matter) would be as Boeheim still refuses to budge out of a defensive philosophy that has wilted in relevance and efficiency to the point of extinction.

With three games to go in the 2022-23 regular season, Syracuse has to find something to fight for.

The NCAA Tournament is a pipe dream only attainable through an ACC Tournament victory (and you’d have to be a bold man or woman to bet this team can win four straight games at this point).

The NIT? I’d rather they skip the postseason in back-to-back seasons for the first time in more than 50 years than pretend a bid to the JV Tournament still matters.

It could just be simple as pride.

Can the Orange muster some pride and fight like hell the rest of the way?

Brothers Marcus, left, and Maximo Adams figure to be top players for Narbonne this season. Marcus is a junior, Maxie a freshman. (Marcellus Fletcher)

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Marcus Adams Jr., brother visiting SU is huge (itlh; Adler)

The AAU coach of Syracuse basketball four-star priority target Marcus Adams Jr. and his younger brother, new Orange recruit Maximo Adams, confirms to me that the Adams brothers will be traveling to the ‘Cuse for an unofficial visit in early March.

SyracuseOnSI publisher Mike McAllister first reported this development on Twitter.

The 6-foot-8 Marcus Adams Jr., a four-star small forward who has the option available to be either a member of the 2023 or the 2024 class, was offered by the Orange last December. He took an official visit to the Hill in late January.

More recently, earlier this month, Syracuse basketball coaches made their first scholarship offer in the 2026 cycle, to 6-foot-6 small forward Maximo Adams.

Both attend Narbonne High School in the Harbor City area of Los Angeles and suit up in AAU competitions for the Los Angeles-based Elev8 Elite, an Adidas-sponsored program.

Syracuse basketball will welcome 4-star Marcus Adams Jr. and his younger brother to Central New York.
Marcus Adams Jr. is a top-65 player in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports. In early February, he disclosed a top five of the ‘Cuse, Texas, UCLA, Oregon and Mississippi State.

https://www.si.com/college/syracuse/basketball/five-takeaways-clemson-91-syracuse-73 (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse basketball fell 91-73 at Clemson Wednesday night. Here are five takeaways from the loss.

1. Defense

The Syracuse defense was abysmal against Clemson. The Tigers, fresh off of a loss to Louisville where it shot 4-24 from three, made 14 three pointers and got hot at the start to essentially put the game away early. Clemson was making so many threes because they were mostly wide open. Hunter Tyson came in as Clemson's best scorer and outside shooter. Several times he stood around the perimeter, did not move, yet ended up wide open with Syracuse failing to identify him or other shooters. When Syracuse did get a stop, Clemson rebounded the miss. On the first possession of the game, the Tigers missed three three-pointers, rebounded each miss, and set up a fourth try from deep that went in. The press was just as ineffective as the zone. It was bad all around from start to finish. The inability to switch to man even for a stretch is baffling. The offense actually improved quite a bit in the second half, scoring 41 points. The defense's massive struggles prevented any real shot at a comeback.

2. Judah Mintz

The one bright spot in this game was the play of Judah Mintz. Mintz has struggled with his outside shot all season, but was 4-4 from beyond the arc in this one on his way to a team high 23 points. He tried to put Syracuse on his back and get the Orange back into the game. However, he received minimal help and could do it by himself. It was a great sign to see him hit those shots from the outside. If he comes back next season and continues to develop in that area, he will be one of the most dynamic point guards in the country.

Friedlander: Jim Larrañaga quietly draws up winning blueprint Miami football should follow - Saturday Road (saturdayroad.com; Friedlander)

Miami football has spent the better part of the past 2 decades – and a lot of money on coaching buyouts and facilities – trying to get the swag back from its golden era of the 1980s and ‘90s.

That’s golden. Not Golden, as in 1 of the 6 coaches who have come and gone since the Hurricanes joined the ACC without achieving any kind of sustained success.

Mario Cristobal is the latest to try his hand at returning the program to national relevance.

While the book is still out on how he’ll ultimately do, the shine is already off the man who returned to his alma mater something of a conquering hero. He’s replaced both coordinators and made several other changes, both to his staff and roster, since the end of a dismal 5-7 (3-5 ACC) debut in 2022.

The struggle is real. And the effort is sincere.

But maybe those in charge of Miami football have been going about things the wrong way.

Instead of going for flash, glitter and personality that are the staples of a market dominated by its beautiful people and professional sports franchises, the Hurricanes might be better off following a similar blueprint to the one drawn up by Jim Larrañaga and their much lower-profile basketball program.

Recruit players that fit well together, regardless of how many stars they have beside their name. Find a style that suits their talents and stick with it. Adapt to change by using the rules of the day to your best advantage.

It also helps when administrators have a little patience.

Granted, football is the financial engine that drives the bus of every major college athletic program and its success holds a much higher priority than that of basketball. Especially at a school like Miami.

Bottoms Up! Tanker Truck Ready for Green Beer Sunday in CNY (wibx950.com; Polly)

Who's ready for Green Beer Sunday?

Bottoms up! It's time for the annual tradition at Coleman's, one of the best Irish pubs in America. The famous pub on Tipperary Hill in Syracuse, New York is well known for its St Patrick's Day celebrations. Thousands fill the streets for a day of music with a tanker truck filled with green beer.

Parade, Music & Green Beer

Coleman's will hold Green Beer Sunday on February 26. The parade will kick off at noon with Grand Marshals Mike and Mary Kay Ryan. Music from Mere Mortals will begin at 3 PM.

Miss Green Beer

The Miss Green Beer title goes to Margaret Cacchione this year, an honor she's dreamed.

Anyone who knows Margaret Cacchione knows that holding the title of Miss Green Beer Sunday has been a lifelong dream. Growing up in Tipperary Hill, Margaret was surrounded by family, love and Coleman’s famous Green Beer. Margaret treats every day like St. Patrick’s day in honor of her Grandpa Barrett who taught her to always keep Ireland in her heart.
