Welcome to National Pig Day!

National Pig Day honors the domesticated pig. According to Mary Lynne Rave, who started National Pig Day with her sister Ellen Stanley in 1972, the purpose of the day is "to accord to the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man's most intellectual and domesticated animals." Events where pigs are the focus are held at zoos, schools, farms, sporting events, and nursing homes across the United States, particularly in the Midwest. Some activities include having pig-themed parties where pink colored punch and pork are served, and pink ribbon pigtails are tied around trees. Pig-themed parades also are common. Some have interpreted the day as being a time to give pigs a break by not eating pork products, but others say it is the perfect day for eating bacon, ham, or pork chops.

“We can’t stop anybody:” Jim Boeheim post game following loss to Georgia Tech (localsyr.com; video; Sacco)

The Syracuse men’s basketball team suffered its fourth straight blowout loss on Tuesday night, falling at home to Georgia Tech 96-76. The Yellow Jackets set a program record with 18 three-point field goals made.

Syracuse drops to 16-14 overall (9-10 in the ACC). SU closes out the regular season on Saturday at home against Wake Forest.

Syracuse basketball hits rock bottom in utterly embarrassing home loss (itlh; Adler)

I’m a proud SU alumnus and an often staunch supporter of head coach Jim Boeheim, but it’s getting really hard to defend him, after what has transpired the past two years – and over the last four games – for Syracuse basketball.

On Tuesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome, the Orange put forth a really embarrassing performance in getting crushed by Georgia Tech, 96-76.

The ‘Cuse has now lost four straight Atlantic Coast Conference games, and all four of these setbacks have been by at least 17 points.

It’s one thing to fight tough and come up a few points short against quality foes. But the Orange looks simply dreadful these days, as the team heads toward the end of the 2022-23 regular season.

Syracuse basketball is in a bad, bad spot.

Forget any talk of the 2023 NCAA Tournament, unless the ‘Cuse goes on a miraculous run in the upcoming ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C.

Heck, Syracuse basketball (16-14, 9-10 in the ACC) isn’t even close to the conversation for an NIT invite. The Orange went 16-17 a stanza ago, the team’s first season with a losing record in Boeheim’s tenure.

If the ‘Cuse loses to Wake Forest on the Hill this coming Saturday in the regular-season finale, and then the Orange gets bounced in its first ACC Tournament contest, Syracuse basketball could wind up with a 16-16 mark in 2022-23.

Sorry, my friends, but that’s unacceptable. And this coming from someone who loves ‘Cuse hoops like it’s nobody’s business. I love Jim Boeheim equally as much.

However, this most recent four-game stretch is simply pathetic. Syracuse basketball has now fallen to Duke by 22 points, Clemson by 18 points, Pittsburgh by 17 points and Georgia Tech by 20 points.

SU’s blowout loss to Georgia Tech felt like beginning of the end for Boeheim era (PS; $; Axe)

Jim Boeheim spoke at the postgame podium following Syracuse basketball’s 96-76 loss to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Tuesday night for nearly 13 minutes.

Boeheim was humble in defeat following his team’s fourth-straight loss by 17 or more points and third straight game it has given up more than 90 points.

The Hall of Famer was accommodating, gracious and patient with inquires from the assembled press. It was a total 180 from his combative “Your attitude isn’t good” jab at a student reporter one month ago.

Boeheim was downright apologetic for the stunning collapse of his trademark 2-3 zone defense.

You want to know how bad things have gotten for Syracuse’s defense?

The Orange broke out the man-to-man against Georgia Tech just a few days after Boeheim emphatically stated after SU’s loss to Pittsburgh that it simply wasn’t an option.

“That’s on me,” Boeheim said on Tuesday night. “It’s my defense and we’re not able to stop anybody with it. That’s where we are.”

There were noticeable boo birds chirping among the 18,522 at the Dome and Boeheim didn’t blame them one bit.

“Our fans have been great all year,” Boeheim said. I’m sorry they have to watch that because this was the first time at home we just haven’t competed defensively.”

Syracuse Hoops Must Change To Survive, Or Else (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)

For a particular beleaguered, has-been college basketball power, February 2023 was a no-good, very bad month. It began with public admonishment aimed at its coach who growled too loudly at the media. Later that week, the same coach was scolded for a badly-timed interview that required a week’s worth of walk-back. A rare ranked victory mid-month was followed by losses of 22, 18, 17, and 20 points to cement a losing in-conference record. The program’s starters are currently upset or the subject of transfer chatter. The team’s offense is one-dimensional, its defense is completely uncompetitive, and its aforementioned head coach is the subject of continuous replacement discussion that has intensified by the game.

This is not a description of 4-26 Louisville or 7-23 Georgetown. It is, of course, referencing a limping Syracuse squad that needs to take a good, long look in the mirror.

The Syracuse Basketball team lost its fourth straight game by 17 or more points. This could possibly be the worst stretch of basketball in Jim Boeheim's half tenure at the head of the program. Owen Valentine has some thoughts on the game, the program and where it all goes from this day on. It's your Locked On Syracuse Wednesday.

Syracuse University Athletics plans to construct a facility connecting the JMA Wireless Dome to the Barnes Center at The Arch. The new project, the Miron Victory Court, is part of a multi-year, multi-million dollar process to improve the stadium experience.

New court that will connect the Dome and Barnes to be done by 2024 football season (DO; Chiappone)

Syracuse University has started to create a timeline for its plan to build a facility connecting the JMA Wireless Dome to the Barnes Center at The Arch before the 2024 football season begins, an SU spokesperson said Monday.

The new 26,000 square-foot court will create two new enclosed entrances between the Dome and the Barnes Center, both at the southeastern corner of the Dome at Gates F, G and H, as well as at the northeastern corner at Gates P, E and N. The structure is planned to serve as an event and gathering space, according to a Dec. 16 letter to the city of Syracuse’s zoning office from Jennifer Bybee, SU’s assistant director for campus planning.

SU is currently in the process of developing a timeline for construction of the court and its programming, said Sarah Scalese, SU’s senior associate vice president for communications, in a statement to The Daily Orange.

The Miron Victory Court received funding through a $7 million donation, which also went to support SU libraries, from SU alumnus Bob J. Miron, class of 1959, and his wife Diane Miron.

The court’s construction is also part of an $118 million package to enhance the Dome which SU’s Board of Trustees approved in May 2018. The improvement effort is part of SU Athletics’ JMA Wireless Dome Transformation Project, a multi-year effort in which the university has invested millions of dollars to improve the stadium experience.

SU already installed a new roof, video scoreboard and air conditioning as part of the first phase of construction in the Dome transformation project.

Who is going to win the ACC regular season title?

Despite the stunning home loss to Florida State, Miami still looks to be in the driver seat for the ACC Regular season title. They own head-to-head over Virginia and Clemson, and in the regular season, finale get Pittsburgh at home. Pittsburgh if they win at Notre Dame and Miami would be the ACCT’s #1 seed. I just can’t see Miami losing back-to-back home games.

How much trouble is Virginia in?

Virginia had a disastrous past week. They went 0-2 against Boston College and North Carolina and their offense looked really bad. The Hoos halfcourt offense will always be deliberate under Tony Bennett, but they could knock down perimeter 3s earlier in the year. Once averaging a little more than 70 points a game, it has dropped to barely 68 now. It was nearly 3 weeks ago when Virginia beat NC State 63-50. That was the last time Virginia looked like well Virginia. They face Clemson and Louisville at home this week, and Clemson in particular can beat Virginia if the Hoos play another sloppy game. We know what they are capable of when they are on their game, but right now there are several ACC teams playing better.

Should anyone feel NCAA safe after Miami and Virginia?

The ACC after Miami and Virginia probably has 6 more teams, Duke, Clemson, UNC, Pittsburgh, NC State, and Wake Forest with a realistic shot at an At-Large bid.

I think Duke is a virtual lock. Even if they lose to NC State and UNC I think they make the field. I like NC State’s position. Nobody else better go winless for the week and needs at least a split of their games.

In the case of Wake Forest, they need a sweep of Boston College and Syracuse to even stay on the bubble.

So yeah the short version is ACC NCAA hopeful teams still have work to do.

NCAA Basketball: Picking winner of each conference tournament for 2022-23 season (bustingbrackets.com; Mauro)

Championship Week is here! In a few short weeks, we will finally know the NCAA tournament bracket and we will all toil over the brackets we are going to submit to various bracket challenges across many different sites. The NCAA Basketball regular season is over, and the second season begins for those teams who were not good enough to build a tournament-worthy resume. There will be 32 automatic bids into the NCAA tournament handed out over the next two weeks.

There are ultimately going to be upsets and bid stealers over these next two weeks. This is a time when it is no fun to be a bubble team. Those teams often find themselves sitting on the results of every game because a tournament win by a team who would not have otherwise made it will seal their fate. A lot of low majors offer their regular season champion an automatic bid into the NIT, that way if they get upset in the conference tournament, they will still be able to be rewarded for their excellent season.

Over the last few seasons, I have given you my educated predictions on who I think will win the conference tournaments along with a sleeper pick. It has been done with some minimal success as every year there are a handful of tournaments that are complete chaos where anything can happen. Richmond was nowhere near my radar of a team who could win the Atlantic 10 a season ago, but instead, they won and upset Iowa in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

I have a little different approach this season when it comes to picking my conference winners. I have successfully watched at least one full game of all 363 teams and I do feel I have a good idea of how the conferences and conference tournaments will play out. I still will only likely get 50% of these right again but it is still a fun exercise to begin the conference tournament season. These are going to be in order from the time the tournaments start.

How recent eventual March Madness men's champions did in their conference tournaments (ncaa.com; Wilco)

For many schools, conference tournaments are everything. Those few games in March make all the difference between a team having a chance to live out its NCAA tournament dreams and watching it on TV like everyone else.

For other powerhouse teams, conference tournaments mean little besides staying fresh for the Big Dance, improving tournament seeding, and maybe taking some pride points by hoisting the conference trophy.

Or do they?

Is a team's performance in the single-elimination conference tournament a good predictor of how it will do on the biggest stage? And when you fill out your bracket, should you be putting a little more faith in teams that performed well the week or two prior?

Let's take a look at each national champion since 1994 and see how they did in conference tournament play.

Longtime Syracuse hotel to be razed for more student housing near SU (PS; $; Moriarty)

The hotel formerly known as the Genesee Grande will be torn down to make way for a five-story student apartment building under plans approved by the Syracuse Planning Commission.

Opus Development Co., of Rosemont, Illinois, plans to build a 145-unit apartment building where the 157-room Collegian Hotel & Suites now stands. The hotel, which was formerly the Genesee Grande, is on East Genesee Street two blocks north of Syracuse University’s campus.

The 82-room Mayflower Hotel adjacent to the Collegian and part of the same property will not be demolished. It will continue operating as a hotel.

The planning commission voted Feb. 21 to approve the company’s plans.

The project is a major change to a student housing development that Opus announced for a parcel behind the hotel in 2021. It proposed and received city approval to build a seven-story, 104-unit apartment building on what is currently a parking lot along Madison Street in the rear of the site.
