Welcome to National DNA Day!

National DNA Day is an annual, global celebration of the discovery of the DNA double helix structure. This year is extra special! People across the world on April 25, 2023 will commemorate both the 20th anniversary of the Human Genome Project’s completion and the 70th anniversary of the discovery of the DNA double helix.

How Syracuse got a TBT regional this summer; basketball court arrangement sealed deal (PS; $; Ditota)

When The Basketball Tournament was eyeing options for its 2023 summer venues, it first offered Buffalo the right to a site.

Blue Collar U, a team of former University of Buffalo basketball players, won the winner-take-all $1 million last year. TBT approaches its champion soon after the title game to ask about options “in your neighborhood” for the following summer, said TBT founder and CEO Jon Mugar.

But Buffalo options soon evaporated. UB’s basketball arena is not air-conditioned (a non-starter for summer games) and other outdoor possibilities never worked out.

“We knew we had friends down the road in Syracuse,” Mugar said. “Obviously that fan base is one we want to cater to every opportunity we can. We’d been with SRC (at OCC) a few times. We’d always known about the War Memorial, but the dates never worked out.”

Until this summer.

TBT will return to Syracuse and play in a bigger downtown arena. A regional will be played July 24-28 at the Upstate Medical Arena at the Oncenter War Memorial. That’s the same site, of course, where the Syracuse Nationals once played NBA games.

TBT’s 2021 champion Boeheim’s Army and Blue Collar U will play in the Syracuse regional. (Teams can choose their regional sites.) Tickets for the Syracuse games go on sale May 1 for people on TBT’s ticket wait list. They will be available for the general public May 4.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange out of lead for 4-star Philly guard, per On3 (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball coaches are recruiting 2024 four-star guard Jalil Bethea extremely hard, and I believe that the Orange is in solid shape for the fast-rising prospect out of the Philadelphia area.

That being said, recently, the On3 recruiting prediction machine for a sizable period of time had the ‘Cuse out in front in the recruitment of the 6-foot-4 point guard/shooting guard, with around a 50 percent position.

When I checked Bethea’s profile via the On3 Web site on Monday, I noticed that Temple had moved out in front according to the recruiting prediction machine, with Syracuse basketball at No. 2, at around 32 percent.

Now, this doesn’t mean the Orange is in any way out of the running for Jalil Bethea, but I did want to pass along this information. Take it for what it’s worth.

As of Monday, I had not seen any official analyst predictions in Bethea’s recruiting process between the 247Sports Web site, and the On3 Web site.

Syracuse basketball is prioritizing 2024 four-star guard Jalil Bethea in the junior cycle.

In March, ‘Cuse head coach Adrian Autry and his assistants watched Bethea twice in person as he suited up in post-season play for his high-school team.

During the 2022-23 season, Bethea was a standout junior for Archbishop Wood Catholic High School in Warminster, Pa., which reached the semifinals of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (“PIAA”) 6A tournament.

https://www.si.com/college/syracuse/recruiting/syracuse-basketball-offers-2024-pg-mikey-lewis (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse basketball has extended a scholarship offer to one of the recruits who made the biggest name for himself at this past weekend's EYBL session. Class of 2024 guard Mikey Lewis tweeted that assistant Brenden Straughn offered on behalf of the Orange on Monday. Lewis, a 6-3 point guard, is rated a three star prospect by 247Sports and On3 but a four star by Rivals and ESPN.

Providence, Illinois, Arizona State and Washington State have also recently offered Lewis, who previously held a Cal offer as well. Why is he suddenly attracting a lot of high major attention? Lewis had a stellar first session at the EYBL for the Oakland Soldiers this past weekend.

In fact, Lewis led the EYBL in scoring at 25.3 points per game. This was not simply a volume scoring situation either. Lewis shot 49.2% from the floor overall while hitting 14 of 26 (53.8%) of his three point attempts. In addition, Lewis contributed in other ways beyond scoring the basketball. He averaged 4.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 0.8 steals per game as well. That is why Lewis is one of the most buzz-worthy recruits in the country right now. It would not be a surprise if other offers came as a result. He will certainly have more eyes on him at the next EYBL session to see if he can back up that performance.

Syracuse Basketball: Preseason top 25 features Melo’s son, 4-star commit (itlh; Adler)

As we look ahead to the 2023-24 term, multiple Syracuse basketball recruiting targets will be suiting up on teams that are ranked in a way-too-early top 25 for the next season.

Jordan Divens, the national basketball editor of MaxPreps, recently disclosed an early preseason top 25 for the 2023-24 stanza.

In these rankings from Divens, Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, N.Y., checks in at No. 3, St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C., is No. 11, Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, N.Y., is No. 14, and Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, N.Y., is No. 18.

One of the stars for Cardinal Hayes is Syracuse basketball 2024 commit Elijah Moore, a four-star shooting guard who verbally committed to the Orange this past January.

The 6-foot-4 Moore, per several recruiting services, is a top-75 national prospect and a top-20 shooting guard within the junior class. In 2022-23, Cardinal Hayes won the New York “AA” Archdiocesan tournament title.

Syracuse basketball targets are highly rated in preseason team rankings.

Kiyan Anthony, a 2025 four-star shooting guard and the son of ‘Cuse legend Carmelo Anthony, will be a junior at Long Island Lutheran in 2023-24. The 6-foot-3 Kiyan Anthony was offered by the Orange last November and is rated in the top 70 by several recruiting services.

This past season, Long Island Lutheran was one of the best squads in the loaded National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (“NIBC”), and it received an invite to the 2023 GEICO Nationals.

St. John’s College High School was a top-20 team for a large portion of the 2022-23 stanza, winning the 2023 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (“WCAC”) tournament title.

A 14-inch crappie blank lies on its side on Kraus's work table (PS Featherstone)

Inside Syracuse’s fake fish factory, where anglers from around the U.S. turn for trophies (PS; Featherstone)

The basement utility room of Patrick Kraus’s bungalow in Syracuse’s Strathmore neighborhood is cluttered with paint cans, brushes, and jars of glittery powder. Every surface is covered in a patina of dried paint. The air smells of turpentine.

But this is no ordinary art studio—it’s a fake fish factory where Kraus, 40, the artist behind Kraus Fish Artistry, creates some of the finest fish replicas in the country for anglers who want to mount their special catch.

Name a freshwater fish species and Kraus has probably painted a replica of it, from ten-inch brook trout to 70-pound salmon. His fish hang on walls in 20 states and most Canadian provinces. Last February, Kraus received his biggest commission yet: a 76-inch, 103-pound paddlefish.

But Kraus had never seen a paddlefish before, let alone painted one. He’d need all his skills to transform the featureless chunk of fiberglass now wedged against his hot water heater into a real-life replica of the monster his client once hauled out of a lake in Oklahoma.
