Welcome to Whole Elephant Day!

World Elephant Day asks everyone to "help conserve and protect elephants from the numerous threats they face" and "to experience elephants in non-exploitive and sustainable environments where elephants can thrive under care and protection." It is a day to express concern, share knowledge, and support solutions for the better care of captive and wild elephants; it is a day to honor elephants, spread awareness about the critical threats they face, and to support solutions to help ensure their survival. It brings "attention to the urgent plight of Asian and African elephants" and is "a vehicle by which organizations can rally together to give voice to the issues threatening elephants."

The day was thought up in 2011 by Canadian filmmakers Patricia Sims and Michael Clark, and by the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation, specifically by Sivaporn Dardarananda, the Foundation's Secretary-General. It was founded on August 12, 2012, by Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation, and first observed on that day. The Foundation is a non-profit that was started in 2002 as a Royal Initiative of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand, and has the mission of acquiring captive elephants and reintroducing them to live as wild elephants in protected forest habitats. The day was created in part to celebrate the work of the Foundation. On the first World Elephant Day, Patricia Sims and Michael Clark released Return to the Forest, a documentary which focuses on the work of the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation.

A big surprise if Syracuse basketball doesn't land 4-star Kiyan Anthony, analyst says (itlh; Adler)

The recruitment of Syracuse basketball 2025 priority target Kiyan Anthony from New York City is expected to carry on for several more months, and Orange fans are understandably anxious to learn where the four-star shooting guard ends up for his collegiate career.

The 6-foot-5 Anthony, the son of Syracuse basketball legend, long-time NBA star and future Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony, recently disclosed a top six of the 'Cuse, Ohio State, Auburn, Rutgers, Florida State and Southern California.

Kiyan Anthony received a scholarship offer from the Orange in November of 2022. In late October of last year, he went on an official visit to the Hill. Recent media reports indicate he's likely to visit all six of his finalists before making a commitment announcement, which could occur before his senior season in high school commences.

Serbia’s Bogdan Bogdanovic says he wasn’t taunting Carmelo Anthony with 3-point gesture: ‘Nothing more than respect’ (PS; AP)

The video went viral — Bogdan Bogdanovic doing the same “3 to dome” celebration of tapping three fingers to the side of his head after a made 3-point shot that retired Carmelo Anthony popularized during his career

That Bogdanovic did it while looking at Anthony — a three-time Olympic gold medalist for the U.S. — as he sat courtside at Bercy Arena after making a 3 during Serbia’s near upset of the Americans in the semifinals made it an even bigger thing. And the fact that the U.S. rallied shortly afterward to a 95-91 victory made it an outright social media phenomenon.

But if there was any perception that he was taunting Anthony, a national champion at Syracuse University and likely Hall of Famer, Bogdanovic put that to rest after Serbia’s bronze medal game victory over Germany on Saturday.

“If you know me, then you know that I enjoy the game,” Bogdanovic said. “I like to compete, and I will always compete. It’s fire. I’ve been doing (the gesture) for a long time. I know somebody’s thinking it’s provocation or something. But that’s media. For me, it’s just enjoyment and competitiveness for the sport and respect for him. I look at him over there as a legend. Nothing more than respect and competitiveness.”

Syracuse Basketball has HIGH UPSIDE with Chance Westry Healthy | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

On3's Joe Tipton recently reported that Syracuse Basketball Guard Chance Westry has been fully medically cleared for the 2024-25 College Basketball season. With this news, Adrian Autry's squad has a higher ceiling than it had before. Jaquan Carlos can be a really good backup point guard with Westry as the starter. JJ Starling remains as the starting shooting guard plus Westry provides front-court insurance in case something happens to Chris Bell, Donnie Freeman, Jyare Davis, Eddie Lampkin, or Naheem McLeod.Jackson Holzer tells you the new ceiling for Cuse Basketball on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

What's the ALL-UPSIDE Lineup for Syracuse Basketball? | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse); premieres at 10 AM EST)

Syracuse Basketball has a deeper roster on paper compared to last season, especially with former Auburn Tigers transfer Chance Westry fully medically cleared to play. Adrian Autry can run a number of lineup combinations, but the one that stands out features Westry, JJ Starling, Chris Bell, Donnie Freeman, and Eddie Lampkin.Jackson Holzer tells you the most ideal lineup for Cuse Basketball next season.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star recruit Acaden Lewis dishes on unofficial visit to 'Cuse (itlh; Adler)

Fast-rising DMV product Acaden Lewis, a 2025 four-star guard and a top-40 national prospect from Washington, D.C., took an unofficial visit to Syracuse basketball on August 1.

The 6-foot-3 Lewis, one of the hottest prospects in the rising high school senior class, is trending toward five-star status. He's got the Orange in his top eight, a group of finalists that includes multiple blue-blood programs, such as Duke, North Carolina and two-time defending national champion UConn.

Undeniably, the competition for the 'Cuse staff to prevail for Lewis is intense. At the same time, ever since the Orange offered him a scholarship in late April of this year, the program has prioritized Lewis in the 2025 cycle.

What's more, as we've noted on many occasions, multiple Syracuse basketball coaches have deep and long-standing relationships and recruiting ties to the talent-laden Washington, D.C., market.

5-star recruit, watched by Syracuse basketball last month overseas, discloses top 12 (itlh; Adler)

Chris Cenac Jr., a 2025 five-star big man who received a scholarship offer from Syracuse basketball in early June, is down to 12 schools, according to media reports.

The Orange, unfortunately, isn't one of them. Per reports, the dozen teams still in the running for the 6-foot-10 power forward/center are LSU, Houston, Auburn, Alabama, Baylor, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisville, Texas, Kentucky, two-time defending national champion Connecticut and Michigan State.

While I'm bummed that the 'Cuse is no longer in contention for Cenac, I'm wishing Chris all the best in his recruiting process moving forward.

Hawk medicine: Syracuse woman bonds with birds of prey after beloved husband’s death (PS; Featheraston)

One hot day in early June, a red-tailed hawk chick perched on the second-floor gutter of a Syracuse University sorority house, whistling plaintively for its parents.

The chick had fledged the previous day from its nest in a tall gingko tree across the street, perhaps 100 feet away. Now it seemed skeptical about this whole flying thing and wasn’t in any hurry to try it again.

Finally, the chick flapped its big fluffy wings and, with all the grace of a pillow tossed out of moving vehicle, flew to a nearby pine tree.

“Oh, good job, good job, you did it, you did it!” Shouted Anne Marie Higgins from the parking lot below. She pointed her camera at the pine tree and snapped a few photos.

Higgins, 69, a retired nurse practitioner from Syracuse, was there to ensure nothing bad happened to the chick. Fledglings are prone to running into windows and landing in busy streets.

The chick was just one of 11 chicks from five different red-tailed hawk nests scattered around SU and the near East Side that Higgins has been monitoring since early March.

Fledge watch is her busiest time. She shuttles from nest to nest, visiting each one twice a day and posting her observations and photos to her Red-Tailed Hawk Tales Facebook page.

Higgins is the hawks’ guardian, cheerleader, chronicler, benefactor, and human mother, all rolled into one.

City planners greenlight 9-story apartment tower near Syracuse University (PS; $; Moriarty)

The city of Syracuse has given its approval to a proposed nine-story apartment building near the Syracuse University campus.

The Syracuse Planning Commission voted 4-0 on July 29 to approve the project’s site plan and a resubdivision of the two parcels of land on which it would be built, at 411 and 413 University Ave.

The commission had considered the proposal by Gem Street Holdings LLC, of New York City, earlier in July but held off approving it until the Syracuse Landmark Preservation Board weighed in.

The preservation board gave the project a positive recommendation while recommending the developer extend the proposed building’s first-floor stone bases, which Gem Street Holdings agreed to do.

The building’s 47 apartments will not be restricted to students, but Gem Street Holdings has said most of its tenants will likely be students.

Two homes will be demolished to make way for the building, which will be adjacent to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York and across the street from the historic Grace Church..

According to plans filed with the city, the apartments will consist of five studios, one 2-bedroom unit, 32 4-bedroom units and nine 5-bedroom units. In addition, the building will have a study room and a fitness center for tenants, and 11,481 square feet of commercial space.

NYS Fair Love Stories: Their eyes met in 1986 across the crowd; they’ve been together ever since (PS; $; Croyle)

No one really knows when or where Cupid’s arrow is going to land.

True love can blossom anywhere, and at anytime.

That’s what happened to Ed and Cassie DeSocio, of Marcellus, who were just two out of the 71,149 people who entered the New York State Fair on Labor Day, September 1, 1986.

She says Ed spotted her from 50 feet away, through the crowds, while she was looking at a leather purse in one of the buildings.

The attraction was immediate but they lost sight of each other, swallowed up by the surging crowds.

Cassie was 17 years old that morning. The East Syracuse resident had no intention of going to the State Fair that day.

But her friend Colleen’s sister’s boyfriend had a bunch of extra tickets with him and, since it was the last day, they decided to go.

She wasn’t expecting much during her day at the Fair, certainly she would not be looking to find her future husband.

“I knew it would be a low-key kind of day, since my friend was eight months pregnant,” she said. “We figured we would eat and shop a little.”

Some 38 years later, Cassie does not recall what building she was in, maybe it was the Horticulture Building, but she does recall someone “watching me” while she looked at a leather purse.

"I looked up and he was about 50 feet away and, even though there were hundreds of people walking in between us,” she remembered, “in that moment our eyes met and everything else disappeared.”

She said it felt like time “stood still.”

She remembered that the guy wore a muscle shirt and was “definitely my type.” Cassie thought, “I’m going to marry that man!”

The attraction was mutual.
