Welcome to National Bacon Lover's Day!

National Bacon Lover's Day is dedicated to the popular treat cut from the meat of a pig. In the United States, bacon refers to meat from the belly of the pig, known as the pork belly. Bacon from the loin is called Canadian bacon. To make bacon, the pork is cured using salt, and is then dried, boiled, or smoked. The smoking of bacon is often done with hickory, mesquite, or maple wood, and flavors such as brown sugar or maple may be added. More often than not, bacon is pan fried, and it is popular as a breakfast food, in sandwiches like the BLT or club sandwich, as a complement to salads, and in wrapping other foods. "Bacon mania" has swept the United States and Canada since the late 1990's, where there has been a great increase in the amount of bacon being eaten, and in the amount of new bacon recipes. The high sodium and nitrate content of bacon that lower its health benefits has not seemed to much slow down the bacon craze.

30 Minutes In Orange Nation 8-19-24 (ESPN; radio; Orange Nation)

Steve and Paulie are back to react to the news that Syracuse men’s basketball has added a new center, debate what the “floor” is this year for Syracuse football and discuss some shocking transfer portal numbers. Also, Jordan joins the guys to discuss the rough weekend for the Yankees and some other topics in “Today’s Business.”

Syracuse men’s basketball: breaking down the Orange’s non-conference schedule by the numbers (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

After scheduling its season opener versus Le Moyne, the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team solidified its 11-game non-conference schedule for the upcoming season.

Highlighting this year’s non-con schedule includes guaranteed battles in Brooklyn versus Texas and Maryland, the 100th all-time matchup between Georgetown and a road trip to Tennessee for the ACC/SEC Challenge. Syracuse will also have home matchups against Le Moyne, Colgate, Youngstown State, Cornell, Albany and Bucknell, plus another game in Brooklyn versus either Texas Tech or Saint Joseph’s.

Here is a complete look at the Orange’s non-con slate in 2024-25:

For now, early preseason projections remain rare at this point of the year. Among the major projections, only Bart Torvik’s site and ESPN’s bracketology update from July 30 focus on the entire men’s college basketball landscape (rather than just the top-25).

In its 11 non-con games, Syracuse is only guaranteed to play a minimum of three top-45 teams per Torvik — Tennessee (No. 5), Texas (No. 11) and Maryland (No. 42). That could extend to four should the Orange match up against Texas Tech (No. 19) in the 2024 Legends Classic.

The rest of Syracuse’s non-con schedule is both home- and opponent-friendly. Georgetown ranks No. 106 on Torvik’s projections, while the Orange’s other six non-con games include teams ranked No. 172 or lower. That includes four opponents ranked No. 203 or lower.

The Orange will have the luxury in 2024-25 of avoiding something like last year’s Maui Jim Maui Classic, where they faced Tennessee and Gonzaga in back-to-back days.

But, there is a clear “tough stretch” in this year’s non-con schedule.

Between Nov. 21 and Dec. 3, Syracuse will play Texas, one of Texas Tech or Saint Joseph’s, Cornell and Tennessee. Texas, Texas Tech and Tennessee all ranked inside ESPN’s way-too-early top-25 rankings earlier this month. All three also remain on CBS Sports’ top-25 and 1 rankings.

The Cornell game is the only one at the JMA Wireless Dome. Syracuse boasts a 43-game win streak versus Big Red, but closer calls in recent years make that matchup more of a must-watch than a shoo-in win.

Similarly to last year, coach Adrian Autry faces limited time at the start of the season to figure out rotations and lineup combinations before the Orange play the meat of their non-con slate. Keep in mind Syracuse is bringing in a near-completely different roster in 2024-25. As an added bonus: three of those four games in that stretch are not at home.

Legendary punk band says tour will be last: ‘We may never play your town again’ (PS; Herbert)

Legendary punk band X is going on a farewell tour this fall, including two Upstate New York concerts. But it may be your last chance to see the group live.

X, featuring dual lead singers John Doe and Exene Cervenka, released its first album, “Los Angeles,” in 1980 and helped define the L.A. punk scene. More than four decades later, they released their ninth album, “Smoke & Fiction,” in August and announced “The End is Near” tour dates.

“I hope people will come see us play, because — not to be weird — we may never play your town again. But that’s true every night, right?” Cervenka told Billboard in a new interview. “Just a reminder: Life is short, but it’s up to people to listen to the record or come see us if they want. Or not. We’re really happy with this record. And that’s its own reward, no matter what happens.”

X is scheduled to perform Sept. 25 at Empire Live in Albany and Sept. 26 at Water Street Music Hall in Rochester. Tickets for Albany are $38.50 through Ticketmaster, while Rochester tickets are $49.36 via TicketWeb; fans can also look for tickets on VividSeats and StubHub.

X is considered one of the most influential American punk rock bands. Their first two albums were ranked among the 500 greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone, and X songs have been featured in movies like “The Kids Are Alright,” “Boys Don’t Cry,” “G.I. Jane,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”

Cervenka, who was married to Doe from 1980 to 1985 and actor Viggo Mortensen from 1987 to 1997, confirmed that this would be a final tour but said X may continue performing after that.

“Are we going to travel around America, endlessly, getting in and out of a van, in and out of the motel, back and forth to a club at this age? Up and down the stairs to the dressing room and lug our equipment and our suitcases around? No, no, we’re not going to keep doing that,” she told Billboard. “We’re going to do it to the end of the year, and then we’ll reassess. We have festival dreams for next year and Little Stevie’s garage rock cruise in May. I would be happy if we could do a couple of festivals and that, but we’ll see what happens.”
