Welcome to Be an Angel Day!

Angels are thought of as being supernatural spirits or beings that can protect humans. On Be an Angel Day, humans play the role of protector or helper for fellow humans. The day was founded by Reverend Jayne Howard Feldman as a day to do small acts of service for someone and be a blessing in their life. It is a day to selflessly do random acts of kindness and to help others in need.

Syracuse Basketball: Why pledge from Petar Majstorovic is vital for front-court depth (itlh; Adler)

For a period of time now, rumors and speculation floated around that Syracuse basketball coaches were looking overseas to potentially add another player ahead of the 2024-25 season.

On August 16, SU Athletics announced that talented and versatile big man Petar Majstorovic had signed a national letter of intent to play in the upcoming term for the Orange.

Majstorovic is a 6-foot-9 center from Haguenau, France, who was born in Serbia. Most recently, in the 2023-24 season, he competed for the ASVEL Basket Lyon-Villeurbanne U-21 team in the French ProA U-21 league. In 2023-24, he averaged 23.6 minutes, 9.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.5 blocks per game.

Majstorovic's commitment to Syracuse basketball gives the program 12 scholarship players for 2024-25 - roughly half of those players are in the backcourt, while the others are in the front-court. It's possible that several of the squad's players could alternate between the guard and small forward spots out on the wing.

Landing Majstorovic was important for the Orange staff, from my perspective. It bolsters the Syracuse basketball front-court, giving the team another quality option at both power forward and center.

Although the 'Cuse still has one 2024-25 scholarship left, media reports indicate that the squad's roster for the upcoming season is likely finalized at this juncture.

Syracuse basketball has obtained additional center depth with Petar Majstorovic.

This off-season, seven players from the Orange's 2023-24 roster entered the transfer portal, while sophomore point guard Judah Mintz departed the Hill for a pro career.

Among those to hit the portal were centers Peter Carey, Mounir Hima and William Patterson, along with power forward/center Maliq Brown and forward Benny Williams.

Conversely, the Syracuse basketball 2024 recruiting class includes Majstorovic, incoming freshmen Donnie Freeman and Elijah Moore, as well as four-star college transfers Eddie Lampkin Jr., Jaquan Carlos, Jyáre Davis and Lucas Taylor.

The Orange's returnees from 2023-24 are Naheem McLeod, J.J. Starling, Kyle Cuffe Jr., Chance Westry and Chris Bell.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star big Asher Elson heads to professional league Overtime Elite (itlh; Adler)

Fast-rising big man Asher Elson, who holds a Syracuse basketball offer, will spend his senior season with the Atlanta-based professional league Overtime Elite, according to a recent press release.

The 6-foot-10 power forward/center, a four-star, top-120 national prospect in the 2025 class, is one of at least 10 players who have signed on with Overtime Elite over the last month, the league said in its announcement.

It's unclear to me at this juncture which Overtime Elite squad Elson will suit up for in the 2024-25 season. I assume that will get disclosed at some point in the near future. Overtime Elite has several teams based in Atlanta, while others are located around the country.

The Orange staff offered a scholarship to Elson in mid-April of this year. He hails from New York City and played quite well this spring and summer on the AAU circuit, earning praise from national analysts and scouts.

Syracuse basketball four-star recruit Asher Elson has signed with Overtime Elite.

As a junior, Elson was a standout with South Shore High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., which is a member of New York City's Public Schools Athletic League ("PSAL").

The chocolate-covered cheesecake on a stick comes with a variety of toppings, like Oreos, peanut butter drizzle and sprinkles. Don't forget the whipped cream!Chris Carlson

5 foods that will ‘stick’ to your ribs at the 2024 New York State Fair (and one that shouldn’t) (PS; $; Carlson & Dowty)

The assignment: Find a bunch of New York State Fair foods you can grab and go in order maximize your exploration time.

All five of our portable delights are eaten on a stick. One food that we tried was not so delightful.

Food on a stick is a State Fair staple. You can hold your snack in one hand and do what you need with the other. Sip a beverage. Snap a selfie. Play a carnival game. Keep a child from running free.

Easy, convenient and one item even comes with a round of applause.

Shark on a stick

Who: Stix and things

Where: Iroquois Street across from the poultry barn

How much: $9

What’s it like: This one was a double-winner for us. The shark on a stick was best item we had on a stick, and also the cheapest. This stand specializes in exotic meats on a stick including shark, wild boar, elk, gator and kangaroo.

The shark has a light fishy flavor, a nice meaty texture and was accompanied by a zesty marinade made for seafood. All of the meats that we tried were good but the shark and the elk (similar to steak) were our favorites.

Half & half corndog

Who: Golden K Dog

Where: Between Indian Village and Horse Barn

How much: $16

What’s it like: If an elevated State Fair corndog exists, it exists here. The hot dog packages are opened and battered right in front of you and fried quickly. The result is a batter that is vastly superior to the generic corn dog stands you’ll find sprinkled throughout the fair.

We used Thai chili sauce as a condiment rather than the usual ketchup and mustard and it provided a nice tang. This version is a mozzarella stick top and a corn dog bottom but there is a classic version and another that is wrapped in potato cubes.

Chocolate-covered cheesecake on a stick

Who: Caramel Apple Sundae

Where: Between Indian Village and Horse Barn

How much: $7

What’s it like: This was another really good deal and among the better foods we ate. The cheesecake was smooth and rich and the stand offered a variety of toppings that could be featured on it including whipped cream, Oreos, sprinkles and peanut butter sauce. While there are a number of frozen cheesecake options sprinkled around the fair, this one offered the real deal.

Who knew that an Irish pub stand at the State Fair could serve good food. The Shamrock was slinging Reuben fries and steaming clams. That's why it's a Hidden Gem at the New York State Fair. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)(Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

Hidden gems at NYS Fair: 5 foods you didn’t know about but really need to ingest (PS; $; Miller & Hayes)
Someone in your group visiting the New York State Fair this year will insist on a sausage sandwich, one will want a gyro, and you know you’ll all crave a Pizze Fritte. We get it. We do that too, and, yes, we chase all that with a wine slushie.

But there’s so much more than you probably don’t know about.

Reporters Charlie Miller and Anne Hayes spent Opening Day roaming the Fairgrounds looking for some hidden gems, lesser-known food and drinks that will broaden your culinary horizons. One of us (Chuck) eats and drinks for a living; one of us (Annie) eats and drinks as a hobby. That kind of qualifies us as Fair experts. Right?

Here are a few of our State Fair diamonds, some rough, and some nicely polished.

Breakfast at the Indian Village

Who: The Soup House

Where: Indian Village

How much: $18.50 (for basically two meals)

What’s so good: The only way you’d ever know you were at the State Fair while eating in the Indian Village is Ted & Amy telling you “It’s 8 a.m.!” over the public address speakers. Otherwise, you’re surrounded by trees, grass and furniture made out of logs.

We went for the basic breakfast plate ($9). That’s two eggs (over easy), a couple strips of crispy-not-wilted bacon, a mound of homefries and one big-ass piece of toast. Just for fun, we each got a side of bison hash ($7).

Our eyes were clearly bigger than our bellies because we barely could finish the basic breakfast. The bison meat is so lean that you’ll definitely want to sauce it up with one of the bottle of Frank’s sitting on the table.

Eating here is like having breakfast in your childhood home’s kitchen. The folks are friendly, the food is filling and wholesome.

Affogato at The Eatery

NYS Fair 2024: We tried over 100 sweets, meats, games and rides, and found the best for you (PS; $; Staff)

Over two dozen syracuse.com reporters and editors swarmed the New York State Fair for a few hours on opening day Wednesday, tasked with finding the best food and drinks the event has to offer.

We went in search of specific types of food: Where can you find the best tacos? What if you’re in the mood for something sweet? Which rides are worth your money, and which games are the most fun? What if you want something you’ve never tried before, or something new to the fair this year? And what are the wildest cocktails you’ll find on the fairgrounds?

All told, we ate and drank dozens of items in the first few hours of the fair, and tried a bunch of games and rides on the Midway. And we have opinions.

So here it is, our guide to eating, drinking and having fun across the Great New York State Fair.

Best NYS Fair rides: 8 thrills worth the risk of puking

Looking for a thrill while wandering through the 2024 New York State Fair? Look no further than the Midway. The historic row is lined with 60+ rides of all shapes and sizes. Reporters Samantha House and Geoff Herbert took one for the team and found the best rides to satisfy everyone from the adrenaline junkie to the scaredy-cat.

Breakfast at NYS Fair 2024: Here are 8 hearty ways to start your day right

It’s the most important meal of the day. Well, if you’re having breakfast at the fair ahead of a day of rides, games, music and animals, reporters Chris Baker and Kenny Lacy Jr. have you covered. See how to start your day right, whether it’s with fluffy waffles or a hearty plate of bacon, eggs and potatoes.

NYS Fair concert guide: Country singer and a rock legend on Day 2 (Thursday, Aug. 22) (PS; $; Herbert)

Welcome to our daily New York State Fair concert guide! We’ll be publishing a list of music performers and showtimes every day of the 2024 NYS Fair on syracuse.com.

There are two main stages: Suburban Park and Chevy Court. Suburban Park will host the Fair’s largest concerts in the New York Experience area on the west end near Gate 10, in the back of the Midway and past the Expo Center. Chevy Court is located near Gate 1, next to the Center of Progress Building and by the Dairy Products Building. Both have limited seating available.

No tickets are required for concerts. All are free with admission to the Fair, which is $8 this year — and free for seniors 65 and older and kids 12 and under. Thursday, Aug. 22, is Student Youth Day, which means free admission for youth and students and 18 and younger.

Here’s what to expect on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2024 (Day 2):

RVSHVD - 1 p.m. at Chevy Court

RVSHVD (pronounced “Ra-Shad” — the V’s are A’s) is a Georgia native best known for his 2020 country version of Roddy Ricch’s rap song “Ballin,” which went viral with more than 25 million streams across Spotify, TikTok, Apple and YouTube. His songs also include “Colt 45 (Country Remix)” with Cooper Alan, “Shoebox Money,” a remix of Trey Lewis’ “D--ked Down in Dallas,” and collaborations with Ice Nine Kills, Asking Alexandria’s Danny Worsnop and rapper Paul Wall.

Ace Frehley - 6 p.m. at Chevy Court

The original lead guitarist for KISS, also known as the “Spaceman,” was a co-founding member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group behind hits like “Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Detroit Rock City,” “Shock Me” and “I Was Made for Lovin’ You.” Frehley is promoting his new solo album, “10,000 Hits,” building on his career that includes “New York Groove” and being named one of the Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists of All Time by Guitar World magazine.

Warren Zeiders - 8 p.m. at Suburban Park

Zeiders, a Pennsylvania native, is a country singer who built a loyal following with covers and viral hits “Ride the Lightning” and “Pretty Little Poison,” both of which have more than 140 million streams on Spotify. He also has more than 1.4 billion global TikTok views and sold out his first-ever tour in less than three days.

Rainy, cold opening day of 2024 NYS Fair draws crowd about half the size of last year’s (PS; $; Alba)
Colder, rainier weather than usual for opening day of the New York State Fair on Wednesday drew a crowd about half the size of last year’s.

More than 71,000 people came out for Day 1 of the fair in 2023. On Wednesday, with rain showers and a high temperature of 68 degrees, only 38,215 passed through the gates.

A typical temperature for Wednesday’s date is 80 degrees.

Skies should clear up and the weather should be sunnier as the week continues.

For Thursday, the National Weather Service is forecasting a high of 78. By Saturday and Sunday, temps are expected to be in the low 80s.

Thursday is Student Youth Day. Kids under 18 can enter the fair for free. An ID verifying age may be requested.

More than 930,000 people attended the fair during last year’s 13-day run.

‘90s Rewind brings funky cold nostalgia to NYS Fair (concert review, photos) (PS; $; Herbert)
The 2024 New York State Fair’s opening day concerts leaned heavy on the nostalgia. That’s not a bad thing.

Chubby Checker, the iconic voice of 1960s hits “The Twist,” “Let’s Twist Again,” and “Limbo Rock,” kicked things off this year’s free music lineup with a 1 p.m. performance at Chevy Court. Checker has played the NYS Fair many times before and always brings a great energy, though the day was marred by rainy weather that limited Wednesday’s crowds.
The rest of the day fast-forwarded a few decades with a 6 p.m. Chevy Court performance by Tone Loc, Digital Underground and Color Me Badd — dubbed the “90s Rewind” — and an 8 p.m. show at Suburban Park with boy band singers AJ McLean (of Backstreet Boys) and Joey Fatone (of *NSYNC). We’ll post a review of McLean and Fatone separately, but for now let’s recap the “90s Rewind.”

Digital Underground kicked off the throwback party with performances of fan favorites “Doowutchyalike” and “I Get Around” (paying tribute to famed DU member 2Pac). Backed by a DJ, the set featured the Grammy-nominated hip-hop group’s founding member Money B rapping alongside Chris Clarke, a.k.a. Young Hump, a fake-nose-wearing protégé of late frontman Shock G (a.k.a. Humpty Hump).

Music videos playing on the screen behind them helped set the tone (and sometimes filled in lyrics for verses by Tupac Shakur and shock G). The DJ would also occasionally put giant hands on his arms to encourage the crowd of a few thousand to clap along. But when “The Humpty Dance” started, everyone knew what to do, and joined in the dance party.

Color Me Badd took over a few minutes after Digital Underground’s 20-minute performance ended. Mark Calderon is the only original remaining member of the R&B/pop group, but he brought a surprising energy to the stage with two backup singers and dancers. To his credit, Calderon sang live with occasional boy band-style dance moves.
