Welcome to Kiss Day!

Today we celebrate and enjoy kisses. "Kiss" comes from the Old English word "cyssan," which itself came from the proto-Germanic word "kussijanan" or "kuss." This word probably comes from the sound that kissing can make. The first written mention of kissing is in the four Vedic Sanskrit texts, which may date to as early as 1500 BCE.

The orbicularis oris, known as the "kissing muscle," allows lips to pucker. A pucker kiss only takes this and one other muscle, while a French kiss takes 34. "French kiss" is a slang phrase that came about in the English language in 1923; the kiss was given the name because French culture was seen as being overly concerned with sex. This kiss is known as a soul kiss or a tongue kiss in France. About two-thirds of people tip their heads to the right when they kiss, and between 10 million and 1 billion bacteria are exchanged with a kiss.

With 7 new faces, Syracuse basketball begins official practices: ‘It’s like a big family’ (PS; $; Waters)

The Syracuse men’s basketball roster underwent a dramatic overhaul this past off-season.

Syracuse coach Adrian Autry and his staff brought in four transfers and three freshmen to off-set the departures of one player to the NBA draft (Judah Mintz) and seven more to the transfer portal.

The new-look Orange began to come together in July with SU’s second summer session. Even then, however, one incoming player; 6-9 forward Petar Majstorovic, had yet to announce his commitment.

On Tuesday, the Syracuse basketball team will hold its first official practice of the 2024-25. The team will hold 30 practices in the 42 days leading up to the Nov. 4 opener against Le Moyne.

But the Syracuse players; old and new, say that over the last three months, they have come together as a tight-knit group.

“Everything’s going good,’’ Elijah Moore, a 6-foot-3 freshman guard from the Bronx, said Saturday. “We’ve spent time together outside of basketball. I feel like we really like each other and care about each other off the court. That’s going to be important.’’

Over the course of the summer, an interesting dynamic developed for the Syracuse players.

Returning players like JJ Starling, Kyle Cuffe and Chris Bell introduced the transfers to the program and how Autry wants things to be done. But the transfers; all either seniors or graduate students, could provide leadership for the freshmen.

“I think the mix of having four transfers who have been in college for three or four years, there’s a lot of balance,’’ Jaquan Carlos, a 6-foot guard who spent the last three years at Hofstra, said. “We’re new here, but we know how things go in college. We know the ropes, so that makes the transition easier.’’

Kan Jam, kickball and grilling: Syracuse basketball players did it all at Big Brothers/Big Sisters event (PS; Waters)

On a brilliant Saturday afternoon, dozens of kids and teens enjoyed games and activities at Santaro Park off Velasko Road in Syracuse.

They shot hoops, they played Kan Jam or cornhole and chose up sides for a game of kickball as part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Back to School Bash.

And interspersed amongst the throng of school-aged youngsters were almost 20 members of the Syracuse University men’s and women’s basketball teams.

John Bruzdzinski, director of Peace Inc.’s Big Brothers Big Sisters program in Syracuse, said the kids looked forward to mingling with the SU basketball players the kids in the program.

“When they come to an event like today and they see the great student-athletes from Syracuse University; the women’s basketball team, the men’s basketball team, the football team, these are their idols,’' Bruzdzinski said. “They see them on TV. They see them in the newspaper. This is going to be a highlight for many of our Littles.’'

On the basketball court, Naheem McLeod, Syracuse’s 7-foot-4 center, playfully defended against a small group of kids. Many of the players watched the kickball game.

And Eddie Lampkin, the 6-foot-11 transfer from Colorado, took charge of the barbeque grill.

“I feel like this is good for everyone,’' Elijah Moore, SU’s freshman guard from the Bronx, said. “The kids are here and we’re playing kickball and basketball and cooking. It makes it like a family environment.’’

Syracuse guard Kyle Cuffe was not part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program when he was a kid, but he remembers going to a few of the organized events.

“I wasn’t in Big Brothers, but had a bunch of friends that were in it,’' Cuffe said, “so I would just come with them to events like these all the time and hang around. These moments are special.’’

NCAA.com’s Andy Katz reveals Top 10 freshmen in college basketball: Did Syracuse’s Donnie Freeman make the list? (PS; Waters)

There will be no Carmelo Anthony-type snub from Andy Katz this time around.

On Monday, Syracuse forward Donnie Freeman made it onto Katz’s Top 10 freshman list for the 2024-25 college basketball season. Katz, the former college basketball reporter for ESPN, is now at NCAA.com.

The 6-foot-9 Freeman, a native of Washington D.C. who spent last year at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., is the highest-rated recruit to come to Syracuse since Anthony in 2002.

As a freshman Anthony led Syracuse to the 2003 NCAA championship. In the Syracuse.com documentary “Will to Win,’' Anthony and former Syracuse assistant coach Troy Weaver recounted how being left off Katz’s list of the country’s top freshman served as motivation for Anthony ahead of a matchup with Georgia Tech’s Chris Bosh.

Freeman came in at No. 9 on Katz’s list for the 2024 freshman class. He is one of four freshman in the ACC to make the Top 10.

Westcott Street Cultural Fair draws hundreds to Syracuse neighborhood Katrina Tulloch

Westcott Street Cultural Fair celebrates its eccentric identity in Syracuse’s weirdest neighborhood (PS; Sneha KC)

The 32nd annual Westcott Street Cultural Fair returned on Sunday, kicking off with a parade to celebrate the art, music and culture of Syracuse’s quirkiest neighborhood.

“Keep Westcott weird!” a performer hollered, as the crowd, in response, whooped back.

Hundreds of people strolled from Concord to Dell Street where vendors, musicians and dancers packed the road, including groups decked out in tie-dye, teenagers with drawn-on mustaches and parents with children.

Audrey Mortise, an artisan and owner of Upstate Tie Dye, says the “energy” and “uniqueness” of Westcott pushed her to open her booth.

“There’s a sense of community I really like,” said Syracuse University student Paige Hartquist. “Everyone’s super friendly [with] the local artists and vendors.”

“It’s like a farmers market for art,” added Elle Munds, another SU student.

Zia Jackson, a first-time attendee of the fair, said she was impressed by the crowd’s fashion.

“Everyone here is knocking it out of the park,” she said. “One girl had wings [and] a big poofy dress that was so cute. Another person had on a cowboy shirt, except it was bedazzled and gold, and it had scorpions on it.”

Beyond the main street was a kids’ corner filled with family-friendly games where kids raced, blew bubbles and climbed on a wall.

Homegrown urgent care to open 3rd location near Syracuse and plans to hire dozens (PS; $; Dowty)

A locally owned urgent care chain will open its third location this fall in the former Bon-Ton store in Camillus, its owner told syracuse.com.

Drakos Urgent Care is leasing 5,000 square feet of the former department store in Camillus Commons, next to West Genesee High School, owner Heather Drake Bianchi said.

Drakos is looking to hire 40 new medical professionals as part of the expansion, bringing its total workforce to more than 100, Bianchi said.

Drakos began with a pediatric urgent care that opened in May 2023 in the Clay Medical Center before expanding with an all-ages site earlier this year on Legionnaire Drive in Cicero.

With the two sites seeing a combined 700 people a week, Bianchi said she almost immediately started looking for a third location.

The Camillus urgent care is expected to be open before Christmas. The build-out is ongoing, Bianchi said.

Bianchi said the location was picked because there aren’t many urgent cares in the western suburbs.

The new location will accept all major insurances, a notable factor given competitor WellNow’s prolonged impasse with insurance giant Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Bianchi, who graduated West Genesee High School next-door, said she was excited -- and a little nervous -- to open a location in her hometown.

Sweet! Upstate NY festival smashes record for world’s largest cheesecake (PS; Herbert)

An Upstate New York festival is officially home to the world’s largest cheesecake. Again.

Kraft Heinz unveiled a 15,008-pound cheesecake Saturday at the Cream Cheese Festival in Lowville, N.Y. Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Empric confirmed the sweet treat’s size, according to Spectrum News, smashing the previous record by more than 5,000 pounds.

“It is fantastic,” Kraft Heinz Lowville interim plant manager Christina Pomerville said. “The fact that it’s over 15,000 will hopefully make it very difficult for anyone to take the title away from us again.”

The supersized cheesecake brings the record back to Lowville, located about 80 miles north of Syracuse. Kraft previously held the Guinness world record with a 6,900-pound cheesecake at the Cream Cheese Festival in 2013, but a Russian company set a new record in 2017 with a 9,300-pound cheesecake that was 9 feet, 2 inches in diameter.

Saturday’s record-breaking dessert features more than 13,000 pounds of cheesecake filling (made with Philadelphia Cream Cheese from Kraft’s Lowville plant) plus 870 pounds of graham cracker crumbs, 300 pounds of sugar and more than 100 pounds of butter. It also measured more than 11 feet in diameter.

To celebrate, Lt. Col. Adam Keller, commander of the 6-6 Air Cavalry Squadron at Fort Drum’s 10th Mountain Division, used a sword to cut slices of cheesecake for festival attendees who witnessed the feat. Guinness rules dictate the cheesecake must be edible and served on the day of the record attempt; remaining slices were donated to the Lowville Food Pantry and Watertown Urban Mission, according to WWTI.
