The main season for eating pumpkin pie begins with the fall harvest and ends with Christmas. During this time it is often eaten on Halloween and Thanksgiving. Pumpkin Pie Day takes place right before Thanksgiving, making it the perfect time to bake a pie to take to your holiday gathering.
Pumpkin pie consists of a pumpkin filling that is a sweet, orange to brown pumpkin-based custard, made with fresh or canned pumpkin or a packaged pumpkin pie filling. It is commonly flavored with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. Packaged pumpkin filling usually already has these spices in it. Pumpkin pie shells tend to be flaky, and usually don't have a top crust.
Pumpkins are native to the Americas. They were brought back to Europe by explorers in the sixteenth century and began being cultivated there. Some of the Pilgrims who came to America in 1620 may have already been familiar with pumpkins, but if not, some form of pumpkin food was served at the harvest celebration the following year, and they would have learned of them then.

Syracuse basketball’s biggest concern is Texas’ biggest strength; plus 4 more things to know (PS; $; Waters)
The Syracuse men’s basketball team has played only three games so far this season, but a few early trends are already developing.
Despite playing competition from low- to mid-major conferences, Syracuse has struggled to defend. The Orange’s biggest defensive weakness has been defending against 2-point shots.
Whether it’s due to not staying in front of the ball-handler or stopping penetration or failure to offer help defense in time, Syracuse can’t seem to keep teams from getting high-percentage shots in the lane.
Syracuse currently ranks 261st in the country in defending 2-point shots, allowing the likes of Le Moyne, Colgate and Youngstown State to convert on 55.5% of their shots from inside the 3-point arc.
Now, here’s some ominous news: Syracuse plays Texas on Thursday in the Legends Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and the Longhorns just happen to rank 30th in the country in shooting percentage on 2-point shots. Texas is making 60.5% of its shots in the lane or in the mid-range.
Texas dropped its season opener to Ohio State 80-72, but since then the Longhorns have blown out Houston Christian, Chicago State and Mississippi Valley State by an average of 41.3 points per game.
Texas is ranked 23rd nationally in offensive efficiency. The Longhorns’ top three scorers all come from the frontcourt, where 6-6 freshman Tre Johnson is making 58.9% of his shots, 6-7 senior Arthur Kaluma is makng 63.6% and 6-11 center Kadin Shedrick is at 52%.
Syracuse has to force Texas into taking difficult shots and a lower shooting percentage.
The Syracuse-Texas game is the first in Thursday’s doubleheader. The game starts at 7 p.m. on ESPN2 and will be followed by Texas Tech vs. St. Joseph’s.
Here are four more key things to know about the matchup:

What record did JJ Starling set in Syracuse’s 2OT win over Youngstown State? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; Waters)
It’s been an interesting week for the Syracuse men’s basketball program.
The Orange won another squeaker, this time a 104-95 double-overtime victory over Youngstown State on Saturday, to go to 3-0 on the season.
And on Friday, Syracuse learned that Kiyan Anthony, a top-40 prospect in the 2025 recruiting class who also happens to be Carmelo Anthony’s son, had decided to play for the Orange next season.
Both events sparked a lot of questions for the Mailbox, so let’s get started.
(If you have a question for the Mailbox, email it to mwaters@syracuse.com).

Q: With JJ Starling’s 38-point performance, I was wondering if any other Syracuse player from the 315 has ever scored that amount?
Dave S.
Mike: This was a really interesting question following Syracuse’s game on Saturday.
Syracuse has had a lot of really good players who grew up in the 315 area code, including Danny Schayes, Andy Rautins, Buddy and Jimmy Boeheim, Howard and Brandon Triche and Lazarus Sims.
After going through SU’s record book, it turns out that JJ Starling’s 38 points are the most ever scored by a Syracuse player from the 315. Starling eclipsed Danny Schayes’ 33-point performance in a win over Detroit in the 1980-81 season.
Buddy Boeheim scored 31 points in a loss to Virginia in the 2021 ACC tournament. Dale Shackleford, a native of Utica, which is still in the 315 area code, scored 30 points on three separate occasions. Brandon Triche and Andy Rautins both had 29-point games as their career-highs.
Q: When was the last time a Syracuse player played 49 minutes?
Bill N.
Mike: Another question about Starling, who played 49 of the 50 possible minutes in the Orange’s 104-95 double-overtime victory over Youngstown State on Saturday.
The Orange needed Starling’s presence on the floor. Syracuse simply would not have managed to win the game without Starling’s career-high 38-point effort. He went to the bench only briefly in the first half. He sat out exactly 53 seconds.
The 6-foot-4 junior made 14 of his 23 field-goal attempts. He also picked up seven key rebounds and dished out three assists.
The last Syracuse player to log more minutes in a game was Buddy Boeheim in a double-overtime win over Indiana on Nov. 30, 2021.
Boeheim played every second of the Orange’s 112-110 win over the Hoosiers. He scored 27 points on 10-for-23 shooting. He also had eight assists, five steals and three rebounds.
Q: This may be a really tough one, but has Syracuse ever started the year playing three straight single-digit games?
Austin
Mike: At first, I didn’t think this question would be all that tough. I was certain that Syracuse had opened a season with three straight games decided by nine points or less fairly recently.

Beat writers unanimously agree SU will fall to Texas at Legends Classic (DO; Staff)
Syracuse’s first three games have been eventful to say the least. The Orange are 3-0, defeating Le Moyne, Colgate and Youngstown State. Those victories came by a combined 15 points, though, with SU needing double overtime to prevail over YSU.
J.J. Starling willed the Orange to victory with a career-high 38 points, with 31 coming after halftime. Eddie Lampkin Jr. also chipped in 20 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Despite leading by eight in the first overtime, YSU stormed back to force a second OT, but the Orange outscored the Penguins 18-9 across the final five minutes.
Syracuse now travels to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, for the Legends Classic, where it takes on Texas. The Longhorns have won three straight games after losing their season-opener to Ohio State.
Here’s how our beat writers think Syracuse (3-0, Atlantic Coast Conference) will fare against Texas (3-1, Southeastern Conference):

Horns up
Syracuse 72, Texas 85
Last week I said if Syracuse didn’t beat Youngstown State handily, the alarm bells would reach deafening levels. It’s safe to say that’s the case. The Orange haven’t shown they can handily beat below average opponents, especially one that’s made the past four NCAA Tournaments. I was tempted to say Texas would blow Syracuse out of the water, but this could be the classic case of SU playing up to its competition.
We’ll find out Thursday. But for now, I see SU losing this one pretty easily. The Longhorns boast an efficient offense, as they shoot 59.5% from the field, the 22nd-best mark in the country, per KenPom. Texas’ opponents also shoot just 36.6% from 2-point range. Considering 62.1% of Syracuse’s points come from the paint, that doesn’t bode well for the Orange.
SU is going to need someone to step up from 3-point range. As a team, the Orange are shooting 25.4% from deep, while no player that has at least five attempts is shooting more than 32%. I don’t see this being the game Syracuse heats up from the outside. For that reason, I have the Orange dropping their first game of the season in Brooklyn.
Aiden Stepansky (3-0)
Losers Classic
Syracuse 79, Texas 90
The good news is the Orange are undefeated to start the season. The bad news is those might have been the most unconvincing wins in recent memory. SU’s last scare came at the hands of Youngstown State. Though Syracuse won by eight points, the Penguins were a few lucky bounces away from handing the Orange possibly their worst loss in program history.
Entering the Legends Classic, this Syracuse team will exit closer to being losers than legends. SU has already dropped tremendously in KenPom’s rankings, falling from 68 to open the season to 106 entering Thursday’s game. Its last three opponents all ranked far lower than 180. Texas, however, is inside the top 25.
This one could get ugly quick. But for some odd reason, I see SU sticking around through the first half. Head coach Adrian Autry has made it abundantly clear the squad’s biggest flaw is its defense. Against the Longhorns, Syracuse’s defense will rear its ugly head.
The Orange will have absolutely zero answer for the Longhorns’ potent offense and allow them to pick them apart throughout the evening.
Justin Girshon (3-0)
Brooklyn blowout
Syracuse 70, Texas 87
Syracuse might be 3-0, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. The Orange were supposed to dominate their three-game homestand to open the season before embarking for the Empire Classic. Instead, they travel to the Barclays Center with more questions than answers.
SU’s biggest concern thus far is its defense, specifically in the backcourt. Unfortunately for Syracuse, it’ll have its hands full with Texas phenom freshman Tre Johnson. Four games into his college career, 247Sports’ No. 6 class of 2024 recruit is averaging 23.5 points per game while shooting 58.9% from the field and 58.6 from 3 — on 7.3 attempts, nonetheless.
While Johnson is the Longhorns’ main threat, he’s supported entirely by upperclassmen, headlined by forwards Arthur Kaluma and Kadin Shedrick. Facing an SU team that lacks fluidity and chemistry, I think Texas should have no problems and cruise to a double-digit victory.
The trip to Brooklyn will be a wake-up call for the Orange. If SU’s defensive and 3-point struggles persist, I think it could prompt Autry to make rotational changes going forward.

Dan Engelstad’s unorthodox journey led him to Syracuse assistant role (DO; Wolf)
Dan Engelstad hopped in his beat-up red Volvo and drove 45 minutes from Bethesda, Maryland, to Prince George’s County in 2007. As a 22-year-old recent Saint Mary’s College of Maryland graduate, Engelstad was desperate to break into the coaching industry. So, he got creative.
He got word that then-Mount Saint Mary’s head coach Milan Brown would be recruiting at Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School. Brown had an opening on his staff, which Engelstad expressed interest in. That wasn’t enough for him, so Engelstad showed up unannounced and immediately struck up a conversation with Brown.
The two discussed Engelstad’s possible role under Brown. He made it clear the pay wouldn’t be much — $5,000 to be exact, barely enough to be considered a part-time gig. It didn’t matter to Engelstad. Two weeks later, he was offered the job.
“He treated it like he was a kid in a candy store,” Brown said. “He didn’t care. I probably could have paid him nothing. He would’ve still done it. He was just hungry to coach.”
Engelstad’s actions initiated a snowball effect, which brought him to Syracuse 17 years later as an assistant coach. The 40-year-old built his coaching career from the ground up, totaling eight seasons as an assistant between Mount Saint Mary’s and Holy Cross. Then came a stint as Division III Southern Vermont’s head coach from 2013-18 before returning to the Mount as its head coach for six seasons.
To begin his career, Engelstad needed to work tirelessly with how little Brown offered him. He fit the bill.
Engelstad stuffed envelopes, emailed donors and developed detailed scouting reports — sometimes staying up until 6 a.m. The couch in his office acted as a second bed.
“There was always something to do, always something to be done,” Engelstad said. “I was fortunate to learn from some really good people and how the Division I basketball operation went.”
Still in playing shape from college, Brown used Engelstad as a scout team point guard. According to former MSM assistant Kevin Robinson Jr., Engelstad often challenged players by trash-talking them.

Can Syracuse Beat Texas? (orangefizz.net; Gotkin)
It’s been an interesting start to the season, to say the least for Syracuse Men’s Basketball. The Orange are 3-0 but have barely scraped by in all three games against low-major opponents. Yes, those opponents have struggled, however, the transitive property game is very dangerous, especially in basketball. Teams are shooting excellently against the Orange. Yes, some of that is because of bad defense, but also remember that teams will be playing their A+ game and will be extremely motivated in the Dome. That’s especially true for the CNY opponents Le Moyne and Colgate. The game against SU was their Super Bowl. I say all of that because I don’t think you can come to any conclusions about this team after just three games.
Tomorrow against Texas is a big test. The Longhorns started the season ranked in the top 20 before a close loss to a tough Ohio State team. UT has dominated its last three opponents, winning by about 45 points per game. Now, two of those were against Chicago State and Mississippi Valley State, arguably the two worst college basketball programs in the country, but still they dominated teams unlike Syracuse. That being said, I think the Orange have a chance in tomorrow’s game down in Brooklyn.
While they haven’t played great, the ‘Cuse has shown tremendous grit through three games. Adrian Autry’s team will fight until the end and step up in the big clutch moments. That’s an important thing to see. Also, the offense has been really solid through three games, averaging just under 90 points. JJ Starling struggled in the first two games with just 14 and 12 points. They’re getting it done even without Chris Bell making his threes. The junior was one of the best shooters in the country last year but has made just 22% of his deep balls this season. If Chris Bell gets back in rhythm and makes his shots then this offense can become lethal.
Of course, the other part of the game is defense and it has to be better against Texas. Jaquan Carlos has really struggled to keep guys in front him, but he was an All-conference defender last year and at this point, you have to just hope that he can get back to that level. JJ Starling and Chris Bell are both very long athletic players who showed really good flashes on the defensive end last year. This team is still figuring things out and sometimes it just takes time for the defense to come along. But, there’s no better time to get it right than now. Maybe the Orange just play to the level of their opponents. We’ll find out tomorrow.

Syracuse basketball 4-star, 5-star recruits score national player of year watch list (itlh; Adler)
High school prospects with Syracuse basketball ties reside on a national player of the year watch list as the 2024-25 season kicks into high gear.
Not too long ago, 50 high school players were named to the watch list for this season's Naismith Trophy national player of the year. On this list are two Orange commits, a key target, and numerous former 'Cuse recruits.
From a Syracuse basketball recruiting perspective, the headliners are 2025 four-star shooting guard and top-30 national prospect Kiyan Anthony, 2025 five-star forward and top-15 national prospect Sadiq White Jr., and 2026 five-star shooting guard and top-10 national prospect Jordan Smith Jr.
Syracuse basketball recruits are in the running for national player of the year.
The 6-foot-5 Anthony, a senior at Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, N.Y., committed to the 'Cuse last week over Southern California. He is the son of Syracuse basketball legend Carmelo Anthony.
In late May, the 6-foot-8 White pledged to the Orange over Alabama, Southern California, Georgetown, LSU, Tennessee and Texas. White is a senior at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
Kiyan Anthony and White have officially signed with Syracuse basketball in its national top-10 class in the 2025 cycle, per SU Athletics. Joining them are four-star guard Luke Fennell from Melbourne, Australia, and three-star wing Aaron Womack from the Milwaukee area.

Texas represents latest test for SU men's hoops (spectrumlocalnews.com; Staff)
Syracuse may be 3-0 in men's basketball this season, but nothing has come easy so far for Coach Adrian Autry's squad.
And it doesn't look to get easier to end this week with games on consecutive days in Brooklyn.
The Orange open the Legends Classic tonight at Barclays Center, taking on 3-1 Texas at 7 p.m. Friday, Syracuse will face either Saint Joseph's or Texas Tech.
Syracuse will look for not only a win, but breathing room in a win. Thus far, they've survived three nail-biters at the Dome — a 86-82 win over Le Moyne, a 74-72 decision over Colgate and a double-overtime 104-95 win over Youngstown State.
Texas, which is unranked but received 17 votes in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll, will be the Orange's biggest challenge to date. Since dropping a Nov. 4 decision to Ohio State in Las Vegas, the Longhorns have won three in a row, all easy wins over non-conference foes. Freshman guard Tre Johnson has paced Texas so far this season, averaging 23.5 points per game. Senior forward Arthur Kaluma is averaging 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest.
J.J. Starling leads Syracuse in scoring this season. Coming off a 28-point game in the 2-OT win over Youngstown State, Starling's average is now at 21.3 points per game. He's one of five Orange players — joining Eddie Lampkin Jr., Chris Bell, Donnie Freeman and Jyáre Davis — averaging double figures in scoring.

Top expert Paul Biancardi is high on the teams of two Syracuse basketball 2025 commits as the 2024-25 season gets underway in prep hoops.
Biancardi, the recruiting director for ESPN and an all-around good guy, recently unveiled his top 25 in high school basketball as the 2024-25 campaign is upon us.
Two powerhouse programs that Biancardi has in his national top 10 at the onset of this season are Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, N.Y., and the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Both of those juggernauts compete in arguably the country's top high school hoops conference, the 14-member Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Scholastic ("EYBL Scholastic").

In his initial top 25, Biancardi places Long Island Lutheran at No. 3, while IMG checks in at No. 9. Orange recruiting fanatics will certainly want to pay attention to these two groups throughout 2024-25.
Syracuse basketball commits Kiyan Anthony and Sadiq White reside on highly rated teams.
Last week, 2025 four-star shooting guard and top-30 national prospect Kiyan Anthony committed to the Orange over Southern California, a huge recruiting win for head coach Adrian Autry and his top-flight staff.
The 6-foot-5 Anthony, a senior at Long Island Lutheran, is expected to be a significant contributor for the Crusaders in 2024-25. In fact, Biancardi recently told me via phone that for Long Island Lutheran to contend for an EYBL Scholastic crown and a return trip to the eight-team Chipotle Nationals, "Kiyan has to be a big part for LuHi."

Popular Liverpool sports bar to take over pub spot at suburban golf club (PS; $; Cazentre)
Potter’s Pub, the public sports bar / restaurant at the Radisson Greens golf course, welcomed a crowd of football fans Sunday to watch the big Buffalo Bills win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Then it closed for good, ending a nine-year run as part of the golf course at 8055 Potter Road in Radisson.
The bar space in the clubhouse will remain closed until early 2025. Then it will become a second location for the Home Team Pub, a successful sports bar / restaurant at 7990 Oswego Road (Route 57) in Liverpool.
The Home Team Pub has built a reputation for its “expansive” menu and welcoming atmosphere, especially for sports events.
“It’ll be just the same, but in a different location,” said Joey Kalil, who opened the Home Team Pub in 2018. The Radisson Greens space is about half the size of the Liverpool location, he said, and has a big patio overlooking the course for warmer weather.
It will take until at least February to make the necessary changes to the space and get the required licensing, Kalil said.
Kalil posted the news on social media this week:
“Celebrating Six Years! Time flies when you’re having fun. We extend our gratitude to our outstanding staff and dedicated customers, whose unwavering support has fueled our success,” a Home Team Pub Facebook message said. “Since day one, we’ve prided ourselves on being a community-driven sports pub, and we’re confident in our delivery. Following the successful launch of our Road Team Pub Food Truck, we’re excited to announce Home Team Pub’s second location at Radisson Greens, opening early 2025.”

Syracuse gets court order to demolish fire-damaged apartment building (PS; $; Boyer)
A judge has given the city of Syracuse permission to demolish a privately owned apartment building damaged by a large fire last month.
The city sued the owner of the vacant five-story apartment building at 153-157 Seymour St. following an Oct. 17 fire that took the Syracuse Fire Department all day to extinguish. A fire broke in the same building on May 3, 2023, and four Syracuse firefighters were injured trying to put it out.
Following last month’s fire, the inspectors with the fire department and code enforcement office inspected the building and determined it was “an unoccupied hazard, unfit for human habitation, a danger to human life, poses a threat to the personal and real property of others and requires immediate demolition,” the lawsuit filed Oct. 31 said.
A court hearing was set for Nov. 14. The building’s owner, Seymour Luxury Residence of Brooklyn, did not respond to the lawsuit and did not appear for the hearing.
In addition to granting the demolition order, State Supreme Court Judge Joseph E. Lamendola ruled that the city can bill the owner for the cost, along with a 15% surcharge and 9% interest. The owner is prohibited from selling the property until the city completes the work.
SFD could not determine the fire’s cause because it was unsafe for fire investigators to work inside the building, Capt. Phillip Vogt said Wednesday.
The building, which has 40 apartment units and has been known as Peace Manor Apartments, has been vacant since at least December 2021, when the city declared it unfit for occupancy. The code enforcement office has issued more than 90 violation citations over the past five years.
