Welcome to Meteor Day!

Meteor Day is celebrated on June 30, 2016. It commemorates the Tunguska event in 1908. The Tunguska event was an enormously powerful explosion that occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River at about 00:14 UT on June 30. The explosion is believed to have been caused by the air burst of a small asteroid or comet at an altitude of 5–10 kilometres (3–6 mi) above the Earth's surface. Different studies have yielded widely varying estimates of the object's size, on the order of 100 metres (330 ft). It is the largest impact event on or near Earth in recorded history.

SyracuseFan.com/TNIAAM Group Tailgating for 2016 Orange Road Football Games (TNIAAM; Cassillo & TexanMark)

If you're traveling for a Syracuse football game this season, Mark has you covered.

So what makes a great road trip for a Syracuse Orange football fan? Syracuse tailgating expert TexanMark gives us his rankings of the six road trips this year.

Factors Considered:

Non-Football Related Activities (touristy stuff in the local area)

  • Weather (will I freeze my butt off for the date scheduled?)
  • Ease and Cost of Travel and Lodging (Varied Choices and Reasonable Costs)
  • Parking Ease + Tailgate Atmosphere (Game Day Cash Lots which have Tailgating)
  • Desirability of Rival (Excitement of a win over them)
  • "Winnability"of Game (Chance of a win this season)
  • Stadium Amenities and Atmosphere (On campus is a huge plus)
If you can only go to one away game this year, what’s your top road trip pick?

Dino Babers: Embracing Syracuse's Past Success To Accomplish Greatness (video; iheart.com)

Dino Babers outlined a vision for Syracuse football that would turn the Carrier Dome into a buzzing atmosphere every Saturday. Babers plans to turn that vision into a reality by channeling the lessons learned from his many coaching stops and embracing the Orange's history of success.

Syracuse football recruiting: Breaking down the 7 players who committed in a 9-day flurry (DO; Fortier)

yracuse had only three recruits in its class in mid-June. After two Scott Shafer-era recruits left and another preferred walk-on fullback opted to try for scholarship offers, the Orange had a three-star quarterback, a three-star outside linebacker and an unranked wide receiver. And then the coaching staff made a push.

In a nine-day flurry, SU added seven recruits to its ledger on both sides of the ball. Six of those are offensive players. First-year head coach Dino Babers has emphasized speed from both his players and offensive unit as a whole, using the hashtag #OrangeIsTheNewFast on Twitter. He’s acquired that in his most recent commits. He’s also picked up his first two New York recruits after stressing the importance of recruiting in the school’s backyard at his opening press conference. Three commits held offers from Bowling Green, Babers’ last coaching post.

Before this push, Syracuse had received commitments from New Jersey quarterback Tommy DeVito on April 16, Florida wide receiver Sharod Johnson on April 17 and Michigan linebacker Zach Morton on May 10.

You can track the entire Class of 2017 here.

Here’s a roundup of the recent recruiting activity, the Hudl.com highlight tape will be under each player’s blurb when available:

Syracuse Football 2016 Position Preview: Running Backs (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Hope none of these guys think they're fit to wear 44. Dino may have some words with them (and potentially piss on them).

For months now, we've been previewing the Syracuse Orange football season like it's just around the corner. Well... now it sort of is. As we've done in years' past, we'll preview a different SU position group each week. Last week was thequarterbacks. This week:

Running Backs

The ground game started out so promising for Syracuse (over 300 yards rushing against Rhode Island in the opener). But then things fell apart rather quickly (despite the team continuing to run a ton).. SU relied too heavily on quarterbacks running in order to move the ball on the ground. No ball-carrier received enough carries to develop a rhythm. And the Orange fell short of a 1,000-yard rusher yet again. This year's offense should change most of that.

Dontae Strickland, Sophomore

Among a few surprises on Dino Babers's post-spring depth chart for Syracuse was the fact that Strickland sat atop the team's list of running backs. Once relegated to thedreaded "hybrid" role in SU's previous offenses, the speedy ball-carrier moves back to his natural position of running back which will certainly mean a lot more carries out of the backfield. In 2015, Strickland seemed explosive in spurts, though admittedly much of that production came when he was a receiving option (nine catches for 137 yards and two scores).

Syracuse Football: So How Does It Work When Your Son Is Also Your Recruit? (TNIAAM; Keeley)

One of Syracuse's newest verbals is also the son of one of the assistant coaches. Are they allowed to talk to one another between now and Summer 2017?

As pat of last week's deluge of Class of 2017 recruits that the Syracuse Orange football team picked up, three-star ATH Eric Coley committed to SU.

At first glance it was a great pick-up because Coley is a New York recruit and he chose the Orange over the likes of Rutgers, Buffalo and others.

But then you realize this other thing about Coley. He's never actually played a down in New York State because he just moved here from Michigan, following in the footsteps of his father, new Syracuse defensive line coach Vinson "Vince" Reynolds.

And I don't know about you but I suddenly had a lot of questions. Since Reynolds is a coach on the staff where Coley verballed...can they interact with one another? Can Coach Reynolds attend Coley's games and special football events? Are they allowed to talk during dead periods? Or do they have to eat dinner in silence for the next year?

Get To Know Your Orange Man - No. 65, OT Jamar McGloster (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

You're going to be hearing McGloster's name a whole lot more this fall.

Name: Jamar McGloster
Position:Offensive Tackle
Height: 6'7"
Hometown: Hillside, N.J.
High School: Saint Anthony
2015 Stats: McGloster played some games at right tackle for the Syracuse Orange last season, including the opener against Rhode Island where he saw the most time.
2016 Projections: Jamar's your odds-on starter at right tackle at the moment. In any case, you'll be hearing his name called a bunch this season.
How'd He Get Here: Teams may have been scared off by some initial SAT issues, but once those were resolved, Syracuse swooped in with an offer for the New Jersey product.
What'd Scout/Rivals Say: Unrated.
Money Quote: From (then) newly-minted St. Anthony coach Ed Stinson, who had plenty to say about McGloster's surprising rise late in the recruiting process back in 2013:

Get to Know Your Orange Man - No. 64, OG Colin Byrne (TNIAAM; Ceva)

After redshirting last year, Byrne could potentially see some playing time this season.

Name: Colin Byrne
Position: Right Guard
Year: Redshirt-Freshman
Height: 6' 5"
Weight: 321
Hometown: Coral Springs, Fla.
High School: St. Thomas Aquinas
2015 Season: Redshirted
2016 Projections: He is second on the Syracuse Orange's post-spring depth chart at right guard behind redshirt-senior Omari Palmer.
How'd He Get Here?: Colin received offers from Cincinnati and Indiana but chose to stick with Syracuse after verbally committing in 2014.
What'd Recruiting Sites Say?: He got three stars from ESPN, Scout, Rivals, and 24/7.
Money Quote: According to teammate Sam Clauseman, when Colin found out that they had an opportunity to continue to play on the same team in college, Byrne told him this over the phone:

Chevy Court voted favorite concert venue by Central New Yorkers, research firm finds (PS; Tulloch)

According to a recent poll, Central New Yorkers say their favorite local concert venue is Chevy Court at the New York State Fairgrounds.

This summer, Chevy Court will host 23 concerts, free with NYS Fair admission, featuring superstar performers like Kesha, Chicago, Dashboard Confessional, Flo Rida and Brian Wilson. Last year, Chevy Court hosted artists like Rick Springfield, Nas, Salt-n-Pepa, Melissa Etheridge and Jason Derulo.

Research & Marketing Strategies, Inc. (RMS), a local market research firm, conducted the survey of 501 Central New Yorkers in May and June this year. The survey asked about favorite music genres, listening habits, preferences, venues, and concert spending behaviors. All respondents reside within Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga or Oswego County.

The Lakeview Amphitheater, in its debut summer season, was voted by respondents as the second favorite venue, followed by Turning Stone Resort and Casino as the third.

Investigation means more drama for Miami football program - ACCSports.com

Miami still doesn’t know if Juwon Young will be a part of the program moving forward, if Al-Quadin Muhammad will be suspended or if any other players will be disciplined.

This much is certain: It’s rarely boring in the Miami athletics department.

The Hurricanes, less than four months from seeing the end of their three-year NCAA probation for the Nevin Sharpiro scandal, last Friday announced the suspension of Young — a junior linebacker — for violating the department’s rules. He reportedly was not forthcoming with the school as it conducted an internal probe into his use of luxury rental cars. The Miami Herald and Palm Beach Post reported that Young could be removed from the team permanently.

Muhammad, UM’s best pass-rusher and a potential NFL draft pick in 2017, is also reportedly being investigated for similar missteps, as are two other football players. The Miami Herald, seemingly looking to make nervous fans feel a little better amid the unclear news, reported that quarterback Brad Kaaya was not involved.
