National-Hamburger-Day.jpg

Welcome to National Hamburger Day!

On this Day in 1900 the first ‘hamburgers’ were served at Louis’ Lunch diner in New Haven, Connecticut.

Five Food Finds about Hamburgers
  1. The oldest fast food restaurant in the world is the White Castle franchise, which opened in 1921.
  2. The people of America eat more burgers out at restaurants or on the go than they do at home.
  3. The largest hamburger ever created was over 8,000 pounds and was cooked for a burger festival in Wisconsin.
  4. However, the hamburger in its current form, with ground beef and a bun, is a decidedly American creation.
  5. Hamburgers are made of beef, not ham, and there is much debate over whether they actually originated in Hamburg.

Syracuse football position battle to watch, No. 6: Nickel cornerback (DO; Libonati)

With Syracuse football training camp a few weeks away, The Daily Orange beat writers, Chris Libonati, Jon Mettus and Matt Schneidman, will analyze one of the top 10 preseason storylines, top 10 position battles or reveal one of 10 player files each day. Check out dailyorange.com and follow along here to countdown to camp.

With the top two cornerback spots likely settled for Syracuse, the Orange’s nickel corner spot will be a hotly contested battle in the secondary. Wayne Morgan, Christopher Fredrick and Juwan Dowels all could be in contention for the spot.

Each was listed on the post-spring depth chart with Dowels behind Cordell Hudson, Morgan behind Corey Winfield and Fredrick behind Morgan. That likely means Dowels and Morgan will have a leg up when training camp practices begin on Aug. 6.

Dowels will be a redshirt sophomore in 2016 while Morgan will be a redshirt senior. Last season, Dowels defended six passes, one more than Winfield. He racked up 40 tackles in mostly rotational duty and grabbed one interception.

Morgan accrued just 16 tackles last year while playing in all 12 games. Early in his career, he received playing time from former head coach Scott Shafer. But a season-ending injury in 2014 derailed Morgan’s ascension up the depth chart.

Jason Emerich — Meet the 2016 Syracuse Football team (the juice; Cheng)

Each week over the summer, The Juice Online is going to highlight individual players on the 2016 Syracuse football team. This week, we’re profiling offensive lineman Jason Emerich.

One of the first things that head coach Dino Babers did when he arrived at Syracuse was change the nutritional patterns of his team.

Babers removed the soda machine from the team facility and has emphasized hydration, and has also cut out simple carbohydrates from menus.

“I’ve never been a huge soda guy. I know it’s nice to have it not around the building at all so there’s no temptations,” offensive lineman Jason Emerich said. “[The coaches have] done a great job at building our plan nutrition-wise to focus for the offense and for the whole team.”

The Orange will need every advantage it can get to run Babers up-tempo, no-huddle offense. Fitness has been at the core of his philosophy.

“They’re getting us in shape the way we need to be,” Emerich said. “Pushing on and doing everything they’re asking us to do.”

Emerich is in a unique position as an elder statesmen on the Orange. The fifth-year senior was recruited by Doug Marrone’s coaching staff, and played during all three years of the Scott Shafer era.

Babers makes the third coach that Emerich has played college football under.

Damone Drew 5'10 183 4.50 40 RB

High school notebook: Brooke Point's Drew narrows finalists (fredericksburg.com; Coghill)

With the first day of football practice looming on Monday, Brooke Point senior running back Damone Drew is prepared to announce his college decision.

Drew said Wednesday that Syracuse and Temple are his final two choices. Drew said he plans to attend a camp at Temple this weekend for his first visit to the Philadelphia school. He said he will huddle with his family Sunday and make a decision.

Drew also received scholarship offers from Appalachian State, Cincinnati, Illinois, Purdue and Virginia, but he said the Orange and Owls have stood above the rest.

“When I went to Syracuse to see the campus, it was pretty much home,” Drew said. “I liked how the coaches greeted me and going around the school and the majors that they have. I’m just comfortable with the whole environment.”

Drew said while he hasn’t toured Temple, he has strong interest based on the way its coaching staff has communicated with him. He said they seem to care more about him as a person than a player. He said his visit this weekend could cement his decision one way or the other.

Drew was a first-team All-Area performer in 2015 after he rushed for a school-record 2,661 yards and 27 touchdowns.

His teammate, safety M.J. Hampton, recently picked up an offer from Towson University. Hampton, who now holds 12 offers, said he plans to name a top three by the second week of August and commit before the second game of the season.

Syracuse Football 2016 Position Preview: Defensive Line (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

This could get difficult this season.

For months now, we've been previewing the Syracuse Orange football season like it's just around the corner. Well... now it is. As we've done in years' past, we'll preview a different SU position group each week. Last week was the the team's deep group of offensive linemen. This week:

Defensive Line

Ends
Jake Pickard, (Redshirt) Freshman

The hype around Pickard was pretty high when he flipped from Wisconsin to Syracuse, and then further passed on Michigan to stick with the Orange. Pickard brings speed and size along the edge, and with a year under his belt adjusting to college life and getting weight room experience, he'll be ready to jump in as a starter right off the bat. There's several young players here that could be seen as the future of this D-line. The New Jersey product may have the highest ceiling of all, however.

Kenneth Ruff, Freshman

Ruff was originally recruited as a linebacker, but he's already packed on pounds of muscle to turn himself into a serious speed-rushing threat from the edge. Whether he starts or not is likely irrelevant, though. He's a great athlete, even as a freshman, and will see the field plenty as D-coordinator Brian Ward likely rotates into various combinations to see what takes best to the Tampa-2. Between him and Pickard, you're looking at your stereotypical ends for this defense for the foreseeable future.

De'Jon Wilson, (Redshirt) Senior

The Most Entertaining Personalities from CFB Media Days

One of four new coaches in the ACC this year, Dino Babers is going through his third "introductory" period with a conference's media horde after spending two years at FCS Eastern Illinois and two more at Bowling Green. That previous experience enabled him to come off as a seasoned veteran in Charlotte when asked about how he plans to turn around Syracuse's foundering program.

"Since I've arrived at Syracuse University, I felt that we've been on a daunting journey for correctness and righteousness," he said during his opening statement. Later, when asked about the uptempo system he's brought with him—which averaged 42.2 points per game last year at Bowling Green—he gave what Bleacher Report's Justin Fergusoncalled "perhaps the line of the event" in describing what the first practice each spring resembles.

"When you put this style of football in ... it always ends the exact same way: with a bunch of big guys over trash cans not saying much shaking their heads," Babers said. "When they get done with that, so that I can speak to them, I look them dead in the eye, I tell them, 'That's the slowest practice we're ever going to have, and we'll never be that slow again.'"

Babers and his staff have taken to using the slogan "orange is the new fast" to describe Syracuse's system, he said on ESPNU. That and "dome dudes" because of their status as the only power-conference team that plays indoors.

Former Syracuse football OL Sean Hickey signs with Minnesota Vikings (PS; Bailey)

Former Syracuse offensive lineman Sean Hickey has signed with the Minnesota Vikings, the team announced on Wednesday.

Hickey was released by the New York Jets in May after signing a futures contract in January. The Vikings will be his fourth team since going undrafted last year.

Hickey started 38 straight games for the Orange from 2012-14, anchoring SU's offensive line at the left tackle position during the last two years. He was named third-team All-ACC by the coaches and Phil Steele following his redshirt senior season.

After initially signing with the New Orleans Saints a year ago, Hickey spent time on the Saints and New England Patriots practice squads last season.

Typewriter Capital of the World: Syracuse (photos) (PS; Blalock)

Syracuse was once known as the "Typewriter Capital of the World." In the early 1900s, there were several factories in Syracuse manufacturing half of the standard typewriters being used in the United States and for the world.

Syracuse was also known for pottery, salt and metal work, but it was the typewriter industry that showed the nation that advance products can be manufactured in Central New York.

Typing classes were opening up all over the country and women were taking advantage of new opportunities to advance their work skill. Trained typists could turn out twice as many letters a day as they could by handwriting.

Some of the old typewriter factories are still standing and being used for other purposes. The Monarch Typewriter Co. factory is now a condominium building at 429 N. Franklin St. Mission Landing -- or the Gear factory on the corner of S. Geddes and W. Fayette -- now houses studios for musicians and artists.

The Onondaga Historical Association (OHA) has narrowed their impressive collection from 700 to about 80 typewriters manufactured in Syracuse and Central New York. They have some of the earliest typewriters built to the "modern" electric ones.

Tom, great articles today! You should have a ton more likes than usual.

That article breaking down the DL was a good read. Lots of question marks at DE, but lots of intriguing prospects, as well. It will be interesting to see how that unit comes together during the course of the season.
