Welcome to Presidential Joke Day!

A president walks into a bar...and gets to crack his own jokes for a change.

Presidential Joke Day is celebrated every year on August 11, and despite how it sounds, it's not a day designated for poking fun at the president (that's the other 364 days). This is a day to salute presidents with a sense of humor.

The holiday was created in honor of an infamous joke cracked by President Ronald Reagan on August 11, 1984. During a sound check before a Saturday radio broadcast, Reagan said, "My fellow Americans. I'm pleased to announce that I've signed legislation outlawing the Soviet Union. We begin bombing in five minutes."

Reagan was unaware, however, that the feed was live. Word quickly made its way to the Soviets, who put their military on high alert. Those Ruskies never did have much of a sense of humor.

SU News

Syracuse University Orange Football - syracuse.coml (PS; Carlson)

While cautious optimism about the short and long-term success of the Syracuse football program abounds among many local fans, the national experts continue to predict that routine winning is at least one more year away.

CBS Sports' Chip Patterson rolled out a ranking of all 128 FBS teams on Tuesday, placing the Orange at No. 92 in the country and becoming the latest national expert to register low expectations. He ranked Syracuse directly behind Utah State and Wake Forest and, perhaps most concerning of all, behind all 11 FBS opponents that the Orange face this season.

By Patterson's account, then, Syracuse will likely play one team it holds an advantage on over the course of the year, an opening game against Colgate. The Orange also play four teams ranked among CBS Sports' Top 20.

Preseason rankings, of course, are perfect fodder for quibbling, and Syracuse fans would rightfully have plenty of bones to pick.

Among the most likely candidates to offend the sensibilities were the rankings of Wake Forest (No. 91), Boston College (87), Connecticut (76) and South Florida (30), all of whom the Orange play this season. Others include Georgia State, Texas-El Paso, Central Michigan and Troy.

Syracuse football recruiting: Orange targeting under-scouted Canada (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Ask any number of other rival fan bases, and Syracuse University is located in Canada. So to them (and maybe us too) it should come as no surprise that one of the emerging trends of Dino Babers’s new Syracuse Orange football regime is recruiting the Great White North.

Thus far, SU already has two commits from Canada -- wide receiver Josh Palmer and offensive lineman Patrick Davis. Both of them are in Canada Football Chat’s top 10 for the class of 2017. Syracuse is also targeting Canada Prep Academy’s Liam Dobson and Blake Williams. These players in Canada don’t get tons of offers or interest. As SB Nation’s Bud Elliott pointed out this week. They’re under-recruited.

Like Babers’s scheme, this strategy for Syracuse’s coach (and some others around the country too) is all about exploiting inefficiencies. Not a lot of teams run a scheme like the Orange’s? Then recruit using that as your biggest advantage. Take that selling point around the Northeast and find the kids that may not fit into the region’s decidedly less-flashy offensive identity.

Or in the case of Canada, go up there and take an interest when only a handful of schools make the trip during the recruiting cycle.

They’ve already started doing so, it would seem. A look up and down the aforementioned top 10 list sees Orange offers for at least half of the players already, with plenty of time left in the 2017 cycle. It’s easy to see why. Few schools are closer to the border, especially in the eastern providnces. If you’re a high school player hoping to stay close to home, or one that wants to take a couple extra visits outside of your official five, you have limited options within financial reason. It’s an easy match.

Recruiting Roundup: Syracuse commit Sharod Johnson to visit SU, Purdue, Illinois, Toledo (the juice; Cheng)

Congratulations to Carmelo Anthony for becoming Team USA’s all-time leading scorer! On to today’s recruiting links…

2016 New Jersey defensive end Jamal Holloway announced his commitment to UNLV via Twitteron Wednesday. Holloway had originally pledged Orange before decommitting back in January. He is rated three stars by Scout.

SNY.tv’s very own, Adam Zagoria, reports that 2018 Syracuse recruits Naz Reid and Louis Kingwill be invited to the Under Armour Elite 24 Game on Aug. 20 in Brooklyn. Both hold Syracuse offers, and Reid recently said that Cal, Kentucky, Syracuse, Seton Hall, Kansas and UConn among those “working hard.”

2018 New York wide receiver/tight end Jeremy Ruckert is planning on releasing a list of top 13 schools later today, he tweeted on Wednesday. Syracuse extended an offer back in April, joining schools like Alabama, Florida, Florida State and Michigan. He is rated four stars by 247 Sports.

247 Sports’ Ryan Bartow writes that Syracuse wide receiver commit Sharod Johnson will take official visits to Syracuse, Purdue, Illinois and Toledo. “I’m solid for right now. But I’m still looking forward to other schools.”

That’s all for today. See you tomorrow!

Wilson’s official visits are at Florida State on November 11 (vs. Boston College), at Michigan on November 19 (vs. Indiana) and at Alabama on November 25 (the day before game vs. Auburn). He will visit Georgia and USC during the basketball season.

The 6-foot-7, 350-pound offensive lineman from Poly Prep High School in New York has offers to Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, USC, Auburn, Boston College, Clemson, Connecticut, Florida State, Maryland, Miami (FL), Michigan State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Carolina, Stanford, Syracuse, Temple, UCLA, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin and Florida. Wilson has been recruited to Michigan by Tyrone Wheatley.

Omari Palmer — Meet the 2016 Syracuse Football team (the juice; Cheng)

Syracuse offensive lineman Omari Palmer didn’t try to hide from the truth. This was one of the hardest offseasons he’s ever had.

Palmer, a redshirt senior, has played mostly under the same kind of blocking system during his time at Syracuse. But when new head coach Dino Babers arrived, he implemented a system that keeps things moving at a breakneck pace.

That’s fine for skill players, who are used to constant movement and sprinting, but for the big boys on the offensive line? That’s an entirely different story.

“This offseason has been tough, especially for me,” Palmer said during Syracuse’s football media day. “I’m not the most conditioned person, and I’m not the greatest runner or sprinter.”

The offseason is a 10 week program, and coaches consistently harped on conditioning and nutrition. The first three weeks were daunting for Palmer, but like any challenge Palmer has faced, he adjusted.

“As the offseason progressed, I got better with it,” Palmer said. “It got easier and I got more comfortable with the sprints.”

ACC Preview: Will Dino Babers' offense make Syracuse dangerous in 2016? (foxsports.com; Dillard)

There is perhaps no greater philosophical shift in college football than the one taking place at Syracuse, a transition from Scott Shafer's defensive-minded approach to new coach Dino Babers' no-huddle spread attack.

The Orange pieced together offense-optional rosters in three seasons under Shafer, the program's former defensive coordinator turned head coach — finishing 99th, 121st and 77th nationally in scoring, respectively — and now they're led by the conductor of a high-octane points machine responsible for three conference titles in four seasons at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green.

Last season, Babers' second at Bowling Green, the Falcons averaged 42.2 points per game behind senior quarterback Matt Johnson and the country's fifth-ranked passing offense. But with a shift to a power conference and a roster far behind the ACC's reigning powerhouses, how will Syracuse perform during an extensive (and exhaustive) transition period?

Syracuse QB Job Is Eric Dungey's To Lose (todaysu.com; Holcomb)

Dino Babers and his offensive system have people genuinely excited about Syracuse football for the first time in years. However, Babers and the Orange need a quarterback capable of running this high-flying offense in order to improve.

Whether he’s ready or not, sophomore signal caller Eric Dungey appears to be that guy.

In training camp, Dungey will be battling junior walk-on Zack Mahoney, redshirt junior Austin Wilson and freshman Rex Culpepper for the starting role. But this quarterback competition seems to be more of a formality than anything else, as it’s Dungey’s job to lose.

Due to injury, Dungey started in only eight games as a freshman last season, but he showed flashes of competence. In his first ACC game, he completed a season-high 72.7 percent of his passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. The following week, he was 21-for-30 (70 percent) for 210 yards and two more scores, although he also threw two interceptions.

Against the tougher defenses of the league, he struggled. Dungey was just 26-for-54 (48.1 percent) for 278 yards, no scores and two interceptions against Florida State and Louisville, but it’s hard to expect much more from a true freshman signal-caller versus two of the better defenses in the country.

In the final three games of last season after Dungey suffered a head injury, Mahoney started and had very little success. He completed just 38.1 percent of his passes, averaged 3.8 yards per attempt and had no touchdowns against Clemson. The following two weeks, Mahoney also completed fewer than 50 percent of his passes for three touchdowns and an interception against NC State and Boston College combined.

Syracuse Football: Odds stacked against Orange to succeed in 2016 (saturdayblitz.com; Edsen Jr)

There hasn’t been this much hype around the Syracuse football program in some time. So can new head coach Dino Babers overcome the odds in year one?

First off for the Orange, just being in the ACC puts them behind the eight-ball in terms of the difficulty of their schedule. Louisville, Clemson, and Florida State are all powerhouses. Add to that, the thing that is hyping this team – Babers’ new high-paced offense – needs to have year and a half to be installed and run properly.

Syracuse football hasn’t been good in a long time. Since 2002, Syracuse has 65 wins paired with 105 losses. To make matters even more difficult, the Syracuse Orange face the 10th toughest schedule in the nation according to Phil Steele.

Speaking of Steele, he made an appearance on ESPN Radio in Syracuse on “Orange Nation” to talk about the latest with the Orange football program. Steele spoke about the uphill battle for the bottom tier of the ACC, including Syracuse.
