Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Podcast: ACC Atlantic Division Preview (TNIAAM; Cassillo & Lyons)

Home stretch! Today we start previewing the ACC. First up: Atlantic division (sans Syracuse Orange).

In this episode, John Cassillo is joined by Dan Lyons to preview all of the ACC's Atlantic teams (except SU), talk Orange football camp and of course, discuss some beer. Some of the larger talking points.

Syracuse football: How will Friday’s ACC schedule vote shake out? (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

After hearing the early murmurs around this Friday’s ACC football schedule discussion, we weren’t too pleased. The centerpiece of the discussion, pushed by now-former Georgia Tech athletic director Mike Bobinski, was a new “8 plus 2” model seemingly favored by the four league schools with SEC rivals (Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville).

Basically, it calls for an additional power conference game on top of the current mandate (effective next year). That’s easy enough for those four schools. Not so much for others. There’s also the matter of there not being enough power conference teams available outside the ACC to actually fill those spots.

While that option’s probably still on the table, despite Bobinski’s departure, interest has now shifted back over to the nine-game schedule. The ACC scrapped the idea after the Notre Dame arrangement came to pass. But now that ESPN wants more inventory, it may return, despite complaints from the SEC rivals crowd.

Yesterday, the Daily Press’s David Teel brought up a straw poll coming out of the last formal vote on the matter in 2014. Eight games remained the standard, by a vote of eight to six. Investigations afterward revealed this likely breakdown:

“Virginia Tech, Clemson, Florida State, Duke, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Miami and Pitt favored eight.

Virginia, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Wake Forest, Syracuse and Boston College wanted nine.”

It’s easy to see why most of the schools fell into their respective camps. The SEC rivals group doesn’t want to get killed on schedule flexibility in the years where they face Notre Dame as well as their traditional rival. Pitt has non-conference rivals in West Virginia and Penn State, and Virginia Tech can claim the former as a rival as well. Miami entertains an annual series with Florida here and there. Duke likes to schedule one of its academic peers like Stanford, Vanderbilt or Northwestern.

Syracuse football: Some alternative options to "Annihilate Gate" (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Along with partner Driver’s Village today, the Syracuse Orange unveiled the season’s first game-themed button, referencing week one opponent Colgate:

Syracuse fans can pick up free flags and buttons at Driver's Village in Cicero. Week 1 button: "Annihilate Gate." pic.twitter.com/VPrSmPo5Jy

— Stephen Bailey (@Stephen_Bailey1) August 11, 2016
They went with “Annihilate Gate” — which rhymes, so that’s cool. But doesn’t “annihilate” seem a bit harsh? Colgate’s an FCS team. That’s what we’re supposed to do them anyway, even if we don’t explicitly say it.

Since we couldn’t leave well enough alone here a TNIAAM, we went and designed some alternative buttons for Syracuse to consider, along the same general line of thinking. My personal choice would’ve been “WHOdoo?” but alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

Get to know your Orange man - No. 19 WR Tyler Gilfus (TNIAAM; Kropp)

Name: Tyler Gilfus
Position: Wide Receiver
Year: Freshman
Height: 6'1''
Weight: 192
Hometown: Cape Vincent, N.Y.
High School: Thousand Islands

2015 Stats: Played quarterback, threw 40 touchdown passes and set the school record for passing yards during his time at Thousand Islands High School.

2016 Projections: Gilfus is far down on the depth chart, so it will take some injuries and poor performances for him to see the field this season.

How'd He Get Here?: Gilfus joined the Orange in January of 2016 as a preferred walk-on. He received interest from Buffalo as well as some Ivy League and Patriot League schools.

What'd Recruiting Sites Say?: Gilfus was not ranked by recruiting sites.

Money Quote: Here is Gilfus talking about the coaching change.

"I was devastated when I heard of the change in leadership, because I had no idea if my offer would stand or if it would get lost in the mix. I was very excited to get that call."

Get to know your Orange man - No. 20, DB Cordell Hudson (TNIAAM; Constas)

Name: Cordell Hudson
Position: Cornerback
Year: Redshirt Sophomore
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 183
Hometown: Largo, Fla.
High School: Largo

2015 Stats: Hudson earned a lot of playing time as a redshirt freshman, playing in all 12 games last year and starting in five. His 42 tackles were the fifth best on the team, and his two interceptions tied for a team-high.

2016 Projections: He is listed as one of the starting cornerbacks in the post-spring depth chart. It looks like his solid play last year has paid off and he will get a great chance to keep up the positive momentum this season.

How'd He Get Here?: Despite offers from a few other schools, Hudson picked the Orange in December of 2013 and signed his letter of intent on February 5th, 2014, according to 247Sports.

What'd Recruiting Sites Say?: Three star ranking all around.

Get to know your Orange man - No. 20, WR Sean Riley (TNIAAM; Orsenigo)

Name: Sean Riley
Position: Wide Receiver
Year: Freshman
Height: 5’8”
Weight: 151
Hometown: Playa del Rey, Calif.
High School: Narbonne

2015 Stats: As a senior at Narbonne High School, Riley rushed for 1,518 yards on 164 carries with 20 touchdowns, and caught 27 passes for 424 yards and three scores.

2016 Projections: Riley was not listed in the top three of any receiver positions on the Syracuse Orange’s post-spring depth chart, so it’s tough to imagine he’ll be seeing the field for any significant playing time this season.

How’d He Get Here: Riley originally committed to Arizona, but flipped to the Orange when he was told he’d either have to delay his enrollment until January 2017 or pay his own way in his first semester. He also held offers from San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming.

What’d Recruiting Sites Say?: Riley was rated three stars across the board by ESPN,http:///, At their request, this network is being blocked from this site. and 247Sports.com.

Get to know your Orange man - No. 21, RB Moe Neal (TNIAAM; Orsenigo)

Name: Moe Neal
Position: Running Back
Year: Freshman
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 169
Hometown: Gastonia, N.C.
High School: Forestview

2015 Stats: As a senior at Forestview High School, Neal rushed for 1,381 yards and 20 touchdowns on 252 carries, and caught 27 passes for 525 yards and nine touchdowns.
2016 Projections: Neal was listed third on the Syracuse Orange’s post-spring depth chartat running back behind Dontae Strickland and Jordan Fredericks. The faster-tempo offense under Dino Babers will lead to more offensive snaps per game, which should translate to some significant playing time for Neal, even if he remains as the third-string running back.

How’d He Get Here: Neal chose SU over Wake Forest in his final decision, and had offers from a long list of other ACC schools (Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech, NC State), West Virginia, Temple, Akron and a number of others.

He originally committed to the Orange under former coach Scott Shafer, and re-committed once Babers was hired. Neal enrolled at SU in January to get a head start participating in spring practice.

What’d Recruiting Sites Say?: Neal was rated three stars by ESPN, http:///,At their request, this network is being blocked from this site. and 247Sports.com. He was Syracuse’s top-rated recruit in the Class of 2016.

Matching ACC football teams to their 2016 English Premier League doppelgangers (TNIAAM; Haller, Cassillo & Pregler)

The Community Shield has been played, preseason is finishing up and we’re days away from the English Premier League starting up again. This is also a nice precursor to the return of college football. Last year, you folks seemed to enjoy our look at the analogs between the ACC and the EPL, so we’re going to take a new look at it after the craziness that was the 2015-2016 EPL season.

In Alphabetical Order:

Boston College Eagles- Sunderland AFC

Sunderland somehow survived last year, just avoiding relegation. With the rest of Tyne and Wear heading down to the Championship, they're the only remaining team in the northeast reaches of the league. As such we’re pairing them with the Eagles. BC likes to hang out in their coastal home in New England and if the ACC had relegation, I’m pretty sure they would have been in the Championship after a few of these years.

Clemson Tigers = Arsenal F.C.

Both Clemson and Arsenal shed the moniker of also-ran that we gave them last year and moved on up. Arsenal no longer won the Wenger Cup for a fourth place finish, instead sneaking into second at the last moment, and Clemson took home the Atlantic as well as the league, for the first time since 2011. Both look to follow it up with solid years in 2016-2017.

Duke Blue Devils = Everton F.C.

House of the Week: Former Syracuse AD Daryl Gross and 'the best neighborhood in the US' (PS; Pucci)

When Daryl Gross and his family moved from California to Syracuse more than a decade ago, a gift basket was waiting for them by their front door.

The basket was from their new neighbors, welcoming the Grosses to Woodridge Farms, a neighborhood Daryl Gross now calls "the best neighborhood in the United States."

Daryl Gross and his wife, Lael, moved into the home on Holliston Circle in March 2005, about three months after he took over as Syracuse University's Athletic Director, a position he held until March 2015.

The family took a liking to the community almost immediately. Daryl and Lael Gross would go for strolls around the circle, a glass of wine often in hand, while their four daughters would go door-to-door and ask the neighborhood kids to play.

"You really know your neighbors," Daryl Gross said, counting Onondaga County Executive Joanne Mahoney and former Syracuse men's lacrosse star Gary Burns among them.

The neighborhood, which Daryl Gross described as a "cul-de-sac on steroids," reminds him of where he grew up in California, but with a more intimate feel and slower pace of life, he said.
