Welcome to National Bad Poetry Day!

Let’s face it – not everybody’s the best writer, lyricist or poet. But don’t let that stop you!

Bad Poetry Day encourages you to give it a go anyway by putting pen to paper and writing some terrible verse. If you’re feeling particularly cruel, you could read your bad poetry to friends, family and colleagues; hopefully they’ll enjoy good poetry more in the future!

Syracuse Defense features new faces to compliment savvy veterans
(cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

So much of the talk since Dino Babers took over Syracuse Football has been on the offense and for good reason. The new leader of the Orange promises to play a fast, fun, exciting uptempo style.

But there's two sides to the ball.

The Orange defense features an interesting mix of returning playmakers and new faces.

The new faces can primarily be found on the defensive line.

Projected starting defensive ends Jake Pickard and Kenneth Ruff have never taken a college snap as a redshirt freshman and true freshman, respectively.

The interior brings fewer questions to the table with proven players like Chris Slayton, Kayton Samuels and Steven Clark.

Regardless of position, the goal is the same at any position: Get to the ball carrier, better yet, get to the quarterback.

So far in camp, the Orange defense is simulating how it will do so against Colgate September 2nd.

The 6-6, 230-pound Otomewo certainly looks the part of a dominant defensive end. He’ll look to put it all together on the field this year after posting 27 tackles and two sacks as a junior Otomewo has several Division I offers, including Ball State, Iowa State and Syracuse.

Syracuse football: Every 2016 position preview in one place (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

It’s been a couple months since we started previewing every Syracuse Orange football position group. So you’d be excused for missing a couple... until this article, anyway.

Below is a collection of every position preview from coaches through special teams. Some of this information may not hold up as well given a few roster changes here and there. But overall, it’s a pretty accurate picture of every player on the Orange roster.

Coaching staff: Dino Babers & co. bring a new era to Syracuse football
Quarterbacks: Orange passers high on experience, low on depth
Running backs: SU’s promising ground game searches for consistency
Wide receivers/tight ends: What do SU receivers offer past top three options?
Offensive line: Syracuse’s O-line brings more depth than any group
Defensive line: The Orange D-line is frighteningly green this fall

Pittsburgh Panthers — 2016 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

STABILITY AT PITT (FINALLY): Head coach Pat Narduzzi has been a stabilizing force for the Panthers. Consider where Pitt was before he arrived on campus. Following Dave Wannstedt’s departure from the Panthers in the 2010 season, Pitt went through three head coaches and had two bowl games coached by coordinators. That predictably led to inconsistent performances, with the Panthers posting records of 6-7, 6-7, 7-6 and 6-7 during that time period. But Narduzzi exceeded expectations last year, guiding Pitt to an auspicious 6-1 start, an eight win season and a trip to the Military Bowl. “It’s been an amazing year,” Narduzzi said at ACC Kickoff in July. “Looking forward to making some greater things happen.”

WHO TO WATCH FOR: In 2014, running back James Conner established himself as one of the best running backs in college, rushing for 1,765 yards and 26 touchdowns and grabbing ACC Player of the Year honors. But 2015 was a harrowing year for Conner on and off the field. He missed nearly the entire season with an MCL injury, and then needed chemotherapy treatments for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Conner has beaten the cancer, and appears to be ready to build on 2014. “I expect nothing but his best performance,” Narduzzi said. “When you look at what James has done, what he’s been, what he’s been through, the size of that heart inside his chest cavity, you know, I think you’re going to get his best effort.” On defense, strong safety Jordan Whitehead was named ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2015 after recording 109 tackles, the most for a true freshman in program history.

PREDICTION: Pitt returns 16 starters, which should make for a better team. That may not be reflected in its final record, though, with non-conference matchups against Penn State and Oklahoma State, and road games against Miami and Clemson. PITT 28, SYRACUSE 21.

Every 2016 Syracuse Football Opponent Preview, All In One Place (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Whether you've noticed or not, we've been previewing Syracuse Orangefootball's 2016 opponents week by week since April. That exercise wrapped up last week, so we wanted to collect all of the links here, along with some additional info.

Below is a collection of links to all 12 Syracuse opponent previews on TNIAAM,Bill Connelly's previews for the 11 FBS teams and some takeaways you may also find interesting.

Week 1: Colgate Raiders

Last year: 9-5 (6-0 in Patriot League)
TNIAAM Colgate Preview
Bill C. Colgate Preview (N/A)
Want More?: @ColgateFootball

Big Takeaway:

"The year will rise and fall on how the non-conference schedule goes. Should they pull an upset or two, this team could find themselves ranked in the top-5 or -10 by simply running through the rest of the manageable Patriot League slate. Hunt's knowledge of this program going in was a huge advantage and he obviously has it trending in the right direction in a short time."

Changes Coming to Longtime Syracuse University Tradition (twcnews.com; Green)

Some say it’s the soundtrack of Syracuse University.

"When you arrive on campus, about 8:15 in the morning, and it's raining they're playing 'Rainy Days and Mondays,' and they try to catch the mood on campus ... Before a football game, the bells are ringing, playing football songs," said Joseph Downing, SU associate professor of music theory and composition.

The bells date back to 1880, when John Crouse purchased the first one for about $5,000, and they've been ringing ever since.

The climb to the top is only half the battle. A group of students called the Chimemasters are responsible for ringing them two or three times a day, for about 15 minutes each.

"When you ring the bells, there's actually levers that you push for each bell," Downing said. "It's quite physical. If you play two or three minutes long, your hands probably hurt a little bit and you've got a bit of an aerobic workout."

Currently, there are 10 bells in the Crouse bell tower that have been there for more than a century, the largest weighing over 3,000 pounds. Come Thursday morning, though, four new ones will be added.

"If you think of bells are letters of the alphabet, how much poetry can you write with 10 letters? The more letters you have, the more you can write," Downing said. "The more bells you have, the more tunes you can play."

With a new semester on the horizon, a new sound will continue ringing throughout campus. The new bells will begin to be lowered around 9 a.m. Thursday.
