Welcome to 'Black Cow' Root Beer Float Day!

The first root beer float - so the story goes - was served on August 19th, 1893, by Frank J. Wisner, owner of Cripple Creek Brewing, in Cripple Creek, Colorado. He called his creation the "Black Cow Mountain," and it soon became a hit with the kiddos, who began referring to the tasty treat as simply, the "Black Cow."

Nowadays, a root beer float means different things to different folks. For some, it's not a root beer float unless you use plain vanilla ice cream dolloped into your root beer. Others put a little spin on things: plopping some chocolate ice cream into their root beer and calling it a "chocolate cow" or a "brown cow." Still others insist it's only a "brown cow" or a "black cow" if you use regular cola and ice cream. Then there's folks in places such as northeastern Wisconsin, who only call it a "black cow" if the root beer and ice cream are all mixed together, instead of leaving the ice cream floating on top. And would you believe, there's also a such thing as a "purple cow?" Yup, a "purple cow," created when you put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a mug of purple grape soda.

But what do you call a black-and-white cow in a hot pink bikini, floating in a giant mug of root beer and melting vanilla ice cream?

Blissfully content.

Syracuse football: Chris Slayton's time to lead defensive line has come (PS; Mink)

Chris Slayton has an NFL body with measurables scouts salivate over.

And on a defensive line with few proven commodities, the time has come for Slayton to anchor the unit.

The staff knows it.

He knows it.

"I have to step up, as far as being a leader because I was always used to being in the shadows," Slayton said.

Nobody is casting a shadow over Slayton this season. The redshirt sophomore might not be the oldest player on the defensive line, but his athletic talent is second to no one, and a healthy Slayton will be paramount to the defense's chances for success.

He can play inside at defensive tackle, where he played last season after redshirting in 2014. But he has also cross-trained at defensive end throughout fall camp as the Orange looks to find solutions on the edge.

"At the defensive end spot, I had to get used to it. There's a lot of space out there," Slayton said.

ACC provides new way for Syracuse fans to watch conference matchups this year (cnycentral.com; AP)

The Atlantic Coast Conference's digital channel will launch Friday and live-stream 331 nonrevenue sporting events this fall for online viewing.

The league announced the creation of the ACC Network Extra during last month's football media days. It's part of a larger plan to launch an ACC Network TV channel through its partnership with ESPN, with a tentative launch date set for August 2019.

In a release Thursday, the league said the events airing on the digital channel will be available to users with access to WatchESPN and the ESPN app. The league plans to air more than 600 total Olympic sporting events such as soccer, volleyball, field hockey and cross country during the upcoming 2016-17 season.

Syracuse football: Orange blue-chip ratio among Power 5’s lowest (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Tomahawk Nation and SB Nation’s Bud Elliott came up with a pretty interesting metric a few years back. The blue-chip ratio, as he calls it, measures how many more 4- and 5-star recruits you sign than 2- and 3-star recruits in a four-year cycle. The point of the measurement is to determine who actually has a realistic shot at winning the national championship going into each season by looking at the talent on the roster. If you have more 4- and 5-star recruits (50 percent or more), you’re a contender. If not, try again next year.

This year’s numbers are out, and lo and behold, Bud’s short list features all the names you’d expect:

Alabama, USC, Ohio State, LSU, Notre Dame, Florida State, Michigan, Auburn, UCLA, Texas A&M, Georgia, Clemson, and Texas.

Absent and relevant to your interests? Syracuse, who comes in with a 0.01 ratio — well below the 0.50 threshold for contention.

That’s among the worst power conference figures in the country, not surprisingly. The only P5 schools to do worse? Atlantic Division-mates Boston College and Wake Forest, who both finished with a 0.0 rating. We can probably thank Alin Edouard for this, despite him never actually ending up on the Orange roster.

Syracuse University Orange Football - syracuse.coml (PS; Bailey)

Former Syracuse punter Riley Dixon took part in an annual Denver Broncos tradition this week: rookie haircuts.

Dixon, who was drafted in the seventh round by the Broncos, showed off his two-faced trim on Twitter early Thursday afternoon.

I mustache you a question, how is my rookie haircut?pic.twitter.com/lFHBh5cHm7

— Riley Dixon (@RileyTDixon92) August 18, 2016
Dixon is battling veteran Britton Colquitt for the Broncos starting job this preseason camp. He punted twice in Denver's first preseason game on Friday, dropping both attempts inside the opposing 20-yard line and averaging 43.5 yards per kick. Colquitt downed all three of his punts inside the opposing 20 at 44.3 yards per kick.

Dixon was named to the All-ACC First Team last season after averaging a career-best 43.7 yards per punt. Of his 65 punts, 28 were downed inside the opposing 20-yard line, 18 traveled 50-plus yards and only five went into the end zone for touchbacks.

One of 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award, given annually to the nation's top punter, Dixon also excelled in trick plays over the last two years.

Riley Dixon the subject of hysterical rookie hazing by the NFL's Denver Broncos (cnycentral.com; Haswirth)

Former Syracuse University punter Riley Dixon can now say he has experienced what life is like as a rookie in the National Football League.

Rookie hazing in the NFL has long been a known fact. It's tough to not shed a laugh [or two] when shifting your eyes to the image below.

Dixon shared the tweet [above] on Thursday, showcasing his new haircut in the process. Now a member of the Denver Broncos, Dixon's teammates drew what looks like sunglasses and a mustache on the back of his head.

The former Orange star is entering his rookie season in the NFL.

Hotel Syracuse to reopen Friday as Marriott Syracuse Downtown (PS; Moriarty)

The historic Hotel Syracuse will reopen Friday morning as the Marriott Syracuse Downtown after a two-year, $76 million restoration that has made the 92-year-old building the grand lady of Central New York hotels once again.

Owner Ed Riley and representatives of Marriott and the hotel's management company, Crescent Hotels & Resorts, will literally raise the Marriott flag in a ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, marking the official reopening of the hotel.

Group events, such as an Onondaga Historical Association gala in June, have been held at the hotel over the past couple of months. But for the first time since the hotel closed under a previous owner in 2004, anyone will be able to walk in and rent a room starting Friday.

Guests will see a full-service Marriott that has 261 fully modern rooms, a Finger Lakes style bistro named Eleven Waters, and the Cavalier Room and Barbershop bars.

In addition, guests will see a meticulously restored lobby, the hotel's magnificent Grand Ballroom, Persian Terrace ballroom and other common areas and function rooms.

Dear Buffalo,

If we wanted any of those guys, they'd be playing here.

UB is probably NYS's favorite MAC team. No one can take that away from them.

Surprised they only have 30 players from NYS on their roster. That being said, they are killing Ithaca, Cortland and St John Fisher with their recruiting efforts.
