Welcome to Orange Out Day!

Dear Orange Football Student Season Ticket Holders,

Thank you for your tremendous support of the Orange last Friday in the season-opening victory at the Carrier Dome! We look forward to your energy leading Orange Nation this Friday when we host Louisville in an ORANGE OUT!

Head coach Dino Babers has asked the fans to produce a Sea of ORANGE on Friday. In an effort to accomplish this, McDonald's has partnered with Syracuse University Athletics to provide free tickets for all Syracuse University full-time students.

Syracuse football opponent preview: What to know about Louisville
(DO; Libonati)

Dino Babers and Syracuse face their first ranked opponent this season on Friday at 8 p.m. in the Carrier Dome against No. 13 Louisville. Here’s what you need to know about the Cardinals.

All-time Series: Louisville owns the all-time series, 8-6. In the last ten matchups, Syracuse is 3-7 against the Cardinals. The Orange last won a matchup with UofL when the teams played in 2012 as members of the Big East. SU racked up 45 points and thrashed the nationally-ranked Cardinals. The season proved to be Doug Marrone’s last at Syracuse (he left for the Buffalo Bills) and the second-to-last for then-UofL head coach Charlie Strong (he took the Texas head coaching job).

Last Time They Played: Syracuse’s last two matchups haven’t exactly worked out. Two seasons ago, Scott Shafer referenced ISIS after UofL crushed SU, 28-6, to put the game and the postgame press conference in perspective. Last year, SU got smacked, 41-17, as UofL backup quarterback Kyle Bolin torched the Orange for 362 yards and three touchdowns. Cardinals running back Brandon Radcliff ran 10 times for 117 yards, too.

With Syracuse down by 31 points and less than 4:30 left in the game, SU head coach Scott Shafer left quarterback Eric Dungey in. Dungey took a big hit and suffered a season-ending “upper-body” injury. Shafer claimed he had thought SU could get back into the game. Offensive coordinator Tim Lester said SU was just trying to get the first team more reps. Either way, the last time fans saw Dungey in a game against an FBS opponent was when SU played Louisville last season.

The Louisville Report: Lamar Jackson.

Schneidman: Louisville is Syracuse football's first real test, even if Dino Babers won’t say it (DO; Schneidman)

If Colgate was Syracuse’s first true test, then Louisville is like the final exam you didn’t study for.

It’s fine that the Orange posted 33 points against the FCS Raiders, held them scoreless after surrendering a touchdown on the opening drive and set expectations for what should be a season teeming with offensive fireworks. But that was Jake Melville and a Patriot League defense. This is Lamar Jackson and some of the best in the Atlantic Coast Conference on the other side of the ball.

“I think if we would have lost against Colgate, you wouldn’t be asking me that question,” Dino Babers said after being asked if UofL is the first true test of his Syracuse tenure.

Of course that question wouldn’t arise if Colgate left the Carrier Dome with a win. But it’s a serious hypothetical Babers posed after a season-opening victory. This Friday, however, is different. The No. 13 Cardinals (1-0) visit SU (1-0) and the result will provide a better barometer of how Syracuse’s defense stacks up against ranked teams, if its offense can pierce an ACC defense and, ultimately, whether SU has advanced past an era that produced seven wins.

“Really we face it like any other type of game,” defensive tackle Kayton Samuels said. “You can’t have anxiety too high … You can’t, ‘Oh, now it’s a big game.’ Nah, you gotta stay level-headed, so when you play, you play level-headed.”

Coach speak is coach speak and that will produce an answer treating every team as an equal. While Babers preached on Monday that each game is a test, they’re different kinds of tests with different levels of difficulty and different questions.

Syracuse football’s offensive line faces uphill battle against Louisville’s front seven (DO; Mettus)

Dino Babers began his press conference on Monday the same way he did the week before. He rattled off player names, team stats and other figures pertaining to the opponent SU will face — Louisville on Friday.

But this time, instead of starting with his opponent’s offense or coaching staff, Babers went straight to the defense.

“Defensively for Louisville they return eight starters,” he began. “They were 18th in the country in total defense, 14th in the country in rushing defense. They tied for eighth in sacks with 38 sacks in 2015.”

Then he got to the key players: DeAngelo Brown, Devonte Fields and Keith Kelsey. All named to the preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference team. All part of a dominant Louisville front seven.

Syracuse’s (1-0) offensive line will have its work cut out against the No. 13 Cardinals (1-0) at 8 p.m. Friday in the Carrier Dome. An SU unit that struggled to run the ball against Colgate will be facing one of the conference’s best fronts.

Louisville Cardinals — 2016 Syracuse football scouting report - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Syracuse hosts No. 13 Louisville on Friday evening in the Orange’s first ACC game of the 2016 season. Here’s a quick look at the game:

SNAPPING TOO SOON?: Louisville coach Bobby Petrino and the Cardinals have contacted the ACC in regard to Syracuse being allowed to snap the ball before the chain crew was set in its first game against Colgate. The Orange debuted its new up-tempo offense under first year head coach Dino Babers, and amassed 554 yards on 81 plays in a 33-7 win. “The chains have to be set,” Petrino said during the ACC’s weekly coach’s teleconference. “They’ve got to let the chains get down and be set before they can snap the ball again, and there were a couple times in that game where they didn’t get set.” Babers had a different interpretation of the rule. “I was always under the impression that the box was the most important thing, and if the box was set, then the chains could come later,” SU’s coach said, while adding that the issue had been blown out of proportion.

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS: There were obviously plenty of offensive stars during Louisville’s 70-14 thrashing of Charlotte in Week 1, yet quarterback Lamar Jackson found himself shining the brightest. Jackson totaled 405 total cards of offense… in the first half. He finished with eight touchdowns overall, including six passing touchdowns, which both set and tied school records. He likely would’ve broken the passing record had he not sat out the entire second half. Speaking of school records, 16 different receivers caught passes against Charlotte. Among them was Jamari Staples, who caught four for 83 yards. The UAB transfer was one of the best receivers in the ACC during the second half of the 2015 season. In games against Wake Forest and Pittsburgh, he hauled in a combined 19 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns.

Louisville football: Previewing Syracuse QB Eric Dungey (bigredlouie.com; Snyder)

Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey is set to take on the Louisville football team this Friday night at 8:00pm on ESPN2.
Louisville football has their first test of the 2016 season this Friday against quarterback Eric Dungey and the Syracuse Orange. It will be the Cardinal’s first ACC game of the season, therefore it is crucial that they walk out of the Carrier Dome victorious. In order to do that, the Louisville defense must shut down Sophomore quarterback Eric Dungey.

At 6-foot-3 and 207 pounds, Dungey is sure to be the quarterback for the next three seasons under newly hired head coach Dino Babers. He came out of the gate strong last week in their first game of the year against Colgate. According to ESPN, Dungey was able to complete an incredible 34-40 passes while throwing for 355 yards and two touchdowns.

Louisville versus Syracuse will feature two, second year quarterbacks in Dungey and Lamar Jackson. While Dungey is the star quarterback at Syracuse, Jackson will surely be the star of this game on Friday.

Here is what Syracuse’s official athletic website noted from Dungey’s freshman season with the Orange:

Louisville Cardinals vs. Syracuse Orange Preview and Prediction (athlonsports.com; Kurkjian)

The Lamar Jackson Show hits the Carrier Dome Friday night

While the Orange are kicking off the Dino Babers era with optimism after a 33-7 win over Colgate, the rebuilding process in Central New York is going to take some time. Babers, in his first year with Syracuse after an impressive reclamation project at Bowling Green, comes from the Art Briles school of up-tempo offenses, which is no surprise as Babers was an offensive coordinator under the former Baylor coach.

But most eyes on this game will be focused on one player: Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson.

In his team's 70-14 win over Charlotte, Jackson accounted for eight touchdowns (six passing, two rushing) in the first half. - See more at: Louisville Cardinals vs. Syracuse Orange Preview and Prediction

Who Is Syracuse Football Coach Dino Babers? (2paragraphs.com)

In an ACC football opener, the Louisville Cardinals will face the Syracuse Orange on Friday, September 9. Last time they met, the Cardinals stomped the Orange 41-17. The Cardinals will present trouble again for the Orange this year with Heisman hopeful sophomore quarterback Lamar Jackson. He'll test the Orange D in multiple ways.

[Syracuse Coach Dino Babers’ Wife Susan Babers Former Athlete, Coach]

Syracuse will also put its new coach to the test. Coach Dino Babers is making his conference debut at the Carrier Dome. The 55-year-old Hawaii native was formerly head coach at Bowling Green State University (2014-2015) and Eastern Illinois University (2012-2013). Babers has been an assistant coach at Arizona, Texas A&M, UCLA and Baylor, after playing running back and defensive back on the football team at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (1979–1983). Babers is married to his wife Susan; they are the parents of four daughters: Breeahnah, Tasha, Jazzmin, and Paris. When interviewed by local TV station WSYR, he was asked (as a person, not a coach), "What's important to you?" Babers replied: "God, family, football." The Louisville vs Syracuse game will be televised on ESPN2 on September 9 at 8pm.

Syracuse vs. Louisville preview: Five things to watch (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Observing the Orange this Friday night? Here are some things worth paying attention to...

The Syracuse Orange start the season 1-0 after a 33-7 victory over the Colgate Raiders that showed off parts of the excitement that the Dino Babers era can deliver. This Friday, they’re aiming to improve to 2-0 (and 1-0 in the ACC), but that will take a win over the Louisville Cardinals. The Cards are also 1-0 after beating Charlotte by a score of 70-14 last Thursday. They’re ranked 13th/15th in the polls right now, so yeah, not the easiest task.

A steep road ahead doesn’t mean it’s an impossible one, however, and there are still plenty of reasons to watch as SU tries to upend Louisville. We give you five below:
  1. How much of Syracuse’s playbook was left out last week?
Speaking to Syracuse.com’s Stephen Bailey this week, Orange receiver Ervin Philips said that the gameplan against Colgate was “basic,” and that it failed to show fans a whole lot. Considering the results (554 total yards on 81 plays) that’s almost tough to believe.

If the effort against the Raiders was only a precursor for what’s to come, though, it presents some thrilling possibilities for what this team could accomplish against a clearly better Louisville team. They’ll obviously be faster, but what else will be different? Additional formations? Trick plays? More receivers getting trotted out to the field than last week (just six caught a pass vs. Colgate)? Bringing a host of new looks along could help complicate matters for the Cardinals and assist SU with a fast start -- critical to them getting any shot at an upset.

Vegas Play of the Day: Louisville at Syracuse (lasvegassun.com; Keffer)

We’re entering the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

Syracuse plus-14.5 vs. Louisville: $550 to win $500

The second week of college football is all about capitalizing on overreactions coming out of the first week. Louisville has drawn extremely positive reactions across the board after it could have truly put up 100 points on Charlotte, instead settling for a 70-14 victory to easily cover the 38.5-point spread.

But that’s Charlotte, one of the worst FBS teams. Syracuse is a step up, especially with new coach Dino Babers.

Babers is capable of getting the most out of promising sophomore quarterback Eric Dungey, who showed enough to prove he’s the future last season. The Orange can score with the Cardinals; the 49ers couldn’t.

There’s no bigger game in sight for Syracuse than playing at the Carrier Dome in front of a national primetime audience. Louisville has a bigger game next week when it hosts Florida State.

This is a really nice spot for Syracuse, which should keep it close and may even lead deep into the game. Louisville will pull away in the end, but not by more than two touchdowns.

Syracuse University waives application fee for stranded ITT Tech Liverpool students (PS; McMahon)

Syracuse University's part-time University College, has offered to waive its $75 application fee for former ITT Technical Institute students.

Local colleges and universities are reaching out to ITT students who were stranded by the closure of the for-profit school.

"We're hoping that students see us as a viable option as they consider their options in this community," University College Dean Bea Gonzalez said. "Our advising team is ready to work with students."

Onondaga Community College is also reaching out to students who have questions or aren't sure what to do now that ITT Tech has closed for the semester.

The for-profit college network shut its doors this week following a federal order to stop enrolling students who rely on financial aid. Investigators have said that ITT was not in compliance with its accrediting agency.

About 70 percent of ITT's annual revenue is federal aid. ITT operates 130 campuses in 28 state.

Spin Cycle (slamonline.coml Schwadron)

At the peak of his powers, defensive end Dwight Freeney was one of the scariest forces in the NFL. A first-round pick in 2002, the seven-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro helped Peyton Manning and the Colts win Super Bowl XLI, and his 119.5 career sacks rank top-20 all-time.

Freeney, 36, played on the basketball team back at Bloomfield High in Connecticut—he credits basketball for the footwork that goes into his signature spin move on the gridiron—before earning a football scholarship to Syracuse. (He says fellow ’Cuse alum Donovan McNabb is still the best NFL hooper he’s seen.)

He’s also a Jordan Brand athlete, for which he’s thankful beyond the player exclusive cleats he laces up on Sundays, since the now-Atlanta Falcon is a long-time Bulls fan.

With NFL season kicking off on Thursday night, we caught up with Freeney over the phone to find out what kind of game he had on the court, and which NBA players he roots for now.

Paul Zeise: How much would be different if Penn State joined the Big East? (post-gazette.com; Zeise)

Pitt and Penn State will play each other in football this weekend for the first time since 2000, and then they’ll play in each of the next three seasons before the series takes another hiatus.

It’s a shame, really, that these two schools can’t figure out how to make this an annual game. The subject of why they don’t/can’t play has been in the spotlight this week, and there have been plenty of theories floated about it.

One that is often thrown out there is that this game would still be happening — in the form of a league game — had the Big East just accepted Penn State as a member in 1982.

It’s a reasonable thought. Penn State joins the Big East, everyone is happy, they hang around the league, and once Miami, West Virginia, Virginia Tech and company join in 1991, it becomes a dominant football league.

I watched the ESPN documentary “Requiem for the Big East” two days ago for about the 10th time, and in it, former Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese said when Penn State was voted down by the members (5-3 vote) he told Dave Gavitt (the commissioner and Tranghese’s boss at the time) that the Big East would “rue the day” of that decision.

Tranghese has said the same thing numerous times in numerous settings, including in a Q&A from the New York Times in 2009, when he was retiring.
