Welcome to Law Day!
The 14th Amendment: Transforming American Democracy
The 2017 theme provides the opportunity to explore the many ways that the Fourteenth Amendment has reshaped American law and society. Through its Citizenship, Due Process and Equal Protection clauses, this transformative amendment advanced the rights of all Americans. It also played a pivotal role in extending the reach of the Bill of Rights to the states. Ratified during Reconstruction a century and a half ago, the Fourteenth Amendment serves as the cornerstone of landmark civil rights legislation, the foundation for numerous federal court decisions protecting fundamental rights, and a source of inspiration for all those who advocate for equal justice under law.

Syracuse Football: Amba Etta-Tawo Goes Undrafted in NFL Draft (itlh.com; Peelman)
Syracuse Football Wide Receiver Amba Etta-Tawo was not selected in the NFL Draft. Inside the Loud House talks about the year that was and the skills he possesses.
Syracuse Football Grad-Transfer Wide Receiver Amba Etta-Tawo had a great in Orange. In fact, it was the best statistical year ever for a Syracuse Football receiver in history. In adition, he set multiple Syracuse football receiving records in his one year in Orange, according to Syracuse.com. He had 1,492 yards, 14 TD’s, 94 receptions, and seven games with over 100 yards, according to Syrcause.com
Now, all that work has paid off. He has a shot to play in the NFL. Unfortunately for Etta-Tawo, he did not hear his name in the NFL Draft. Most experts thought he could receive a selection anywhere from late in the third round to the sixth or seventh round. He would have become the 215th Syracuse Football player to be drafted to a pro football-league, according to Pro-Football Reference.com.
Etta Tawo’s Skills:
He can make a huge difference wherever he ends up in the NFL. Etta-Tawo is a great in one-on-one matchups, which is why Orange QB’s targeted him so much. If teams sleep on him, he’ll make them pay. He may not have top-end speed, but he has decent moves to get past his man. His height is also an advantage as he can catch balls above smaller defensive backs.
Here’s hoping he can latch on somewhere as a free agent and have an excellent career in the NFL. Maybe one day we’ll see him make it to a Superbowl and help them win it all. For now though, we’ll just have to see where he ends up first.

Syracuse Football: Brisly Estime is a Good Addition for Jets (itlh.com; Edsen Jr)
Brisly Estime signed with the New Jets after the draft yesterday. Paul Esden Jr., Inside The Loud House’s Editor and Site Expert, and a big-time Jets fan, weighs in on Estime’s future in New York.
Brisly Estime may have not been a pick in the NFL Draft, but he was an NFL player before Amba Etta-Tawo ever put pen to paper, if you can believe that. Estime met with multiple teams at his Pro Day, including the team he signed with as an UDFA, the New York Jets. While on the surface it may seem like a bad fit due to the fact they took two other wide receivers, it’s actually is a perfect fit.
Why you might ask? Because of Estime’s prowess as a returner. The Jets have been devoid of good special teams play since Mike Westoff departed years ago. Actually so much so they’ve been one of the worst teams in the league.
Estime was pretty decent when it comes to punt returns. He had 41 returns in his career for 739 yards, according to Sports-Reference.com. That’s good for an average of 18 yards a return, which is good for first in ACC history. In addition, he also had two punt returns for touchdowns in his Junior year at SU.

Does Dino Babers’ System Hurt NFL Prospects? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)
For the third straight year, Syracuse football did not have an offensive or defensive player selected in the NFL draft. While SU has struggled to produce NFL-caliber talent on the gridiron in recent years, this time around was somewhat mind-boggling.
Wideout Amba Etta-Tawo put up video game numbers in his lone season on the Hill, shattering nearly every single-season receiving record. However, that was only good enough to land the Maryland transfer a spot as an undrafted free agent on the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Etta-Tawo was a semi-finalist for the Biletnikoff award and played for a Power Five school. What is there not to like about his talent? He finished amongst the NCAA’s elite statistically, beating out guys in most statistical categories like John Ross, Mike Williams and Corey Davis, all of which were top ten picks.
While Dino Babers has only patrolled the Carrier Dome sidelines for one season, this is not the first time he has coached a receiver that put up gaudy numbers. At Bowling Green, Babers coached Roger Lewis, who actually beat out Etta-Tawo in nearly every receiving category. Lewis, like Etta-Tawo, ranked in the top ten of nearly every receiving category, but winded up undrafted. It’s becoming more and more evident that the college numbers do not mean as much as the eye test for some of these receivers.
There is a track record of Babers assisting in sending guys to the NFL, but these are guys who are playing in the Big 12 at Baylor (Josh Gordon, Kendall Wright, Terrance Williams) and were not necessarily subject to Babers system since he was the wide receivers coach.

ACC has 43 players chosen in the 2017 NFL Draft - ACCSports.com (accsports.com)
The Atlantic Coast Conference had 43 players chosen in the 2017 National Football League Draft over the past three days in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The total is the second highest for any conference this year and the third-highest total for the ACC in the Draft.
The ACC has had 158 players chosen in the last four NFL Drafts, the second-highest total of any conference. The league had at least 42 selections in 2014 (42), 2015 (47) and this year and is one of only two conferences to do so.
In this year’s draft, Miami led all ACC teams with nine selections followed by Clemson and North Carolina (6 each), Pitt (5), Florida State and Virginia Tech (4 each), NC State (3), Boston College and Louisville (2 each), and Georgia Tech and Wake Forest with one selection apiece.
Miami’s nine picks gives the Hurricanes 336 draftees all-time, the most of any ACC school. The Hurricanes now have 64 first-round selections, also the most of any school in the ACC.
A total of 32 ACC players were chosen on the final day of the draft.
Four ACC players were selected in the first round of the draft on Thursday night, led by North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who was chosen second by the Cleveland Browns. Trubisky is the fourth UNC player taken as the second overall player in the draft, joining Ken Willard (1965), Lawrence Taylor (1981) and Julius Peppers (2002).
Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams was then taken seventh overall by the Los Angeles Chargers and Tigers’ quarterback Deshaun Watson was selected 12th overall by the Houston Texans. Finally, Miami tight David Njoku was tabbed 29th by the Cleveland Browns.
Williams is the third Clemson wide receiver taken in the first round since 2013, joining Sammy Watkins (4th, 2014) and DeAndre Hopkins (27th, 2013). He is the fifth Clemson wide receiver drafted in that time.
Williams and Watson made NFL Draft history on Thursday, becoming the first quarterback and wide receiver from the same team to be chosen among the first 12 picks in the draft.

Severe thunderstorm risk rises for Upstate NY: high winds, hail possible (PS; Coin)
The arc of Upstate New York that could be hit with severe thunderstorms today has widened.
Syracuse and Buffalo have now been included in the "enhanced" category for severe storms. That means there's a 30 percent chance, up from the 15 percentchance in earlier forecasts by the Storm Prediction Center.

Most of Upstate New York is now in the "enhanced" category for severe thunderstorms, which means there's a 30 percent chance. Yellow indicates a 15 percent chance
The atmosphere from North Carolina to New York is ripe for storms today. The cold front delivering these storms is likely to arrive Upstate in mid- to late afternoon, when the day's highest temperatures could provide fuel to the storms. The system will move quickly from west to east, and the odds of severe weather lessen in the Capital District and Hudson Valley.
Here's what could happen today, according to the National Weather Service:
- Strong winds are the main and most widespread threat. Gusts reaching 50 to 70 mph could knock down tree limbs and power lines.
- Hail could be as big a quarter, which would cause damage to cars and roofs. Hail would be isolated; there's a 15 percent chance.
- An inch or more of rain could fall, leading to flash flooding and even flooding of small streams. The heaviest rain is expected in the Western Mohawk Valley and Thousand Islands region. The speed of the storm will lower the chances of flash flooding.
- Isolated tornadoes are possible; the chances are 5 percent.
