Welcome to Great Lakes Awareness Day

The Great Lakes (also called the Laurentian Great Lakes,[1] or the Great Lakes of North America, French: les Grands-Lacs) are a series of interconnected freshwater lakes located primarily in the upper mid-east region of North America, on the Canada–United States border, which connect to the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence River. Consisting of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron (or Michigan–Huron), Erie, and Ontario, they form the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth, containing 21% of the world's surface fresh water by volume.[2][3][4]The total surface is 94,250 square miles (244,106 km2), and the total volume (measured at the low water datum) is 5,439 cubic miles (22,671 km3).[5] Due to their sea-like characteristics (rolling waves, sustained winds, strong currents, great depths, and distant horizons) the five Great Lakes have also long been referred to as inland seas.[6] Lake Superior is the second largest lake in the world by area, and Lake Michigan is the largest lake that is entirely within one country.[7][8][9][10] The southern half of the Great Lakes is bordered by the Great Lakes Megalopolis.[11]

Syracuse Football Prioritizing Edward Hendrix | Otto's Grove (ootisgrove.com; Kelly)

I mentioned in writing about the commitment of Juan Wallace that his pledge could be a tipping point for other recruits, as the Syracuse football staff has offered a number of his teammates at Woodson High. One of those teammates is Edward Hendrix, ranked by At their request, this network is being blocked from this site. as the top wide receiver in Washington DC.

At 6-foot-4, 200 the talented wideout is among the top players on Syracuse’s radar in the 2018 recruiting class, and arguably the best outside receiver of the bunch. Hendrix holds offers from Maryland, North Carolina, Arkansas, Louisville, Virginia Tech, NC State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Pittsburgh, and a host of other Power 5 programs, but the Orange are in strong position to land his services.

And of course, that was even before the Orange landed his teammate, Juan Wallace. Getting Wallace in the fold genuinely could be the first domino to fall among an outstanding group of players at Woodson, with Hendrix chief among them and quite possibly the next domino in the line. By all accounts, he’s extremely high on Syracuse, with nearby Maryland, as well as North Carolina, among the chief competitors.

ACC Football Rx: Football Recruiting in the Northeast (accfootballlrx.com; HokieMark)

After the outcome of the game last year, you would think think Mark would remember Syracuse...

Here's a heat map from SBNation showing where NFL 1st round draft picks went to high school:

Raise your hand if you knew that the New York-to-Washington DC corridor was a hot spot for NFL-level football talent... liars!

From this data it would appear that you're just as likely to get a quality football player from New Jersey as South Florida. Sure, they might not be star-rated as high coming out of high school, but does that really matter if they perform at this level by the time they leave college? So maybe those Northeastern kids need more "coaching up" - isn't that why you pay those guys the big bucks in the first place?

Here's a map of where NFL first-round picks come from:

I, for one, would like to see Virginia Tech get more players out of DC, Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York. They might be raw coming out of high school, but I'll put it this way: I'd rather have a raw 6'4" 300 lb lineman from NJ than a polished 6'1" 260 lb lineman from FL any day... and the same goes for that kid out of NYC who may not know about route adjustments but can run the 40 in 4 seconds flat and has hands like glue! Fuente & company can coach 'em up before they leave Blacksburg - I'm sure of it.

  1. College football seems to have settled down following the recent run of realignment that featured expansion in each of the Power Five conferences and caused a cascading series of moves elsewhere.

Sure, rumors bubble under the surface as they seemingly always do, but with current television contracts in place for the major leagues into the next decade, realignment appears to have found its way to the backburner. It doesn't have to stay there forever, though.

The Big 12 raised eyebrows with its will-they-or-won't-they expansion process which ended with the league standing pat. That served as a stark reminder: Expansion can still happen and, in five particular cases, it should.

NY State confirms 'monster' Lake Ontario catfish is a new state record (video) (PS; AP)

A 35-pound, 3-ounce channel catfish caught in Lake Ontario this spring sets a new state record for that species.

State environmental officials say Eric Scordo of Watertown caught the 38-inch catfish on Lake Ontario in Jefferson County on April 29. He used just a nightcrawler as bait.

The catch breaks the 2002 record by nearly 2 1/2 pounds. The previous record channel catfish was caught in Brant Lake in Warren County.

Scordo submitted details of the catch as part of the Department of Environmental Conservation's Angler Achievement Awards program.

the question becomes does the 4+ 4 game model or the just give them 5 model help the top teams more than the lower teams. you could argue it helps the lower teams more since the better teams lose many top players sooner anyway so they wouldnt play beyond 4 yrs. or would it help the better teams more because they have more chances to play kids and kids would be happy sitting part time and playing a little on alabama over playing a bit more early at a lower levl P5?
