Welcome to Heimlich Maneuver Day!

Heimlich Maneuver Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on June 1st.

Dr. Henry Heimlich came up with the Heimlich Maneuver in 1974. Also known as abdominal thrusts, this procedure is used to dislodge food and objects from the throat of a choking person. As the American Red Cross claims over 3,000 deaths are caused by choking each year, celebrating Heimlich Maneuver Day is an important way to raise awareness and help save lives. The origin of the day is unknown.

How Can Syracuse Replace Amba Etta-Tawo’s Production? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

Football season sits about three months away and the Orange’s offensive expectations may be a bit overhyped. After a record-breaking season from All-American Amba Etta-Tawo, the wideout has moved on to the NFL which leaves a large void for Dino Babers’ high-octane offense. However, Etta-Tawo’s numbers prior to coming to Syracuse would never have suggested he would have the greatest receiving season in SU history. That being said, there are a number of options for Eric Dungey and the offense to target in the upcoming year. While it may not be a single player solution, Babers’ scheme can certainly use a group effort to match, and perhaps exceed, Etta-Tawo’s 2016 numbers.

One major piece that could perhaps replicate Etta-Tawo’s numbers is Jamal Custis. Orange fans may not recognize his name, but he has been on the team for three years. Custis will be a redshirt junior in the fall and his metrics are off the charts. He stands at 6-foot-5 and runs a 4.37 40-yard dash according to At their request, this network is being blocked from this site.. Also, the one word used to describe Custis is an athlete. He had an opportunity to walk on to the basketball team and was even offered both a hoops and football scholarship at SMU. Custis has seen the field a little, including scoring off a back corner fade against Central Michigan two years ago for his first ever touchdown. His metrics are actually superior to Etta-Tawo’s in terms of speed and size. We will have to wait and see if Custis can piece it together on the field come September.

Aside from Custis, there are a number of other options to throw to. Amongst returning players, Ervin Phillips shattered all of his personal bests from last season. Meanwhile, Steve Ishmael’s numbers didn’t quite reach his expectations, however that could change with Etta-Tawo’s departure. Phillips can easily match Etta-Tawo’s reception mark as he came up just four shy of AET’s 94 last season. The question is whether Ishmael can almost triple his yardage to equal Etta-Tawo’s 1,482.

Syracuse Shouldn’t Be Afraid of an SEC Team Poaching One Of Its Recruits – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

Three-star recruit Juan Wallace committed to the Orange back on May 4th. But his recruitment may be far from over. The linebacker received an offer from SEC powerhouse Georgia yesterday.

As recently as last year, an elite program, like the Bulldogs, trying to woo a Syracuse commit would have made Orange fans think that player was as good as gone. However, Dino Babers’ recent recruiting has signaled that those days might be over. Babers’ has had success with recent recruits in fending off high profile teams and coaches.

The sample size is small, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t impressive. In the latest recruiting cycle, Babers had to seal down multiple recruits despite late pushes. The most impressive of these is Tommy DeVito. After the Class of 2017 quarterback committed to the Orange, DeVito exploded up the recruiting charts thanks to impressive performances at the Elite 11 and The Opening camps. Naturally, other teams started to take notice of the QB’s talents and began to receive offers from bowl-caliber teams. However, DeVito was so sold on Babers and Syracuse that he spurned last ditch efforts from more successful programs in Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Washington State. To make it even more impressive, DeVito is behind Eric Dungey for at least two years.

Syracuse returns to Philadelphia to offer another underclassman; Episcopal lineman gets local offer (pennlive.com; Gallen)

Asim Richards is perfect when it comes to receiving offers from Power Five schools. The Haverford School defensive end made it three-for-three Wednesday when he announced an offer from Syracuse on his Twitter account.

Truly honored to receive my third offer from Syracuse University#Syracusepic.twitter.com/Sj0z4T6gDV

— Asim Richards (@asimrichards_4) May 31, 2017
Richards' first two offers came from Rutgers and West Virginia, which means that Richards holds offers from schools in the Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC.

Last week, Syracuse offered Conwell-Egan running back Patrick Garwo.

Richards was a first-team All-Inter-Ac selection on the defensive line last season, and he also worked at tight end, where he caught five passes for 58 yards.

Richards checked in at 6-foot-4, 270 pounds at the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp in Piscataway, N.J., earlier this month, where he was rated as one of the top underclassmen at the event.

According to Rivals, "Richards may grow into a defensive tackle some day, but for now he shows plenty of quickness to stay on the edge and be a five-technique defensive end with some pass-rush abilities."

In PennLive's ranking of the top 25 prospects in the Class of 2019, Richards checked in at No. 10.
