Welcome to National Dump the Pump!

On the third Thursday in June, National Dump the Pump encourages people to ride public transportation instead of driving and save money.

When gas prices are high and the economy is tight, riding public transportation is a good alternative and an economical way to save money. Many Americans use local public transportation to commute to and from work, school, for shopping and errands, and even to make family visits. This can save you money on fuel along with wear and tear on your car. It can also possibly reduce your commute time and help reduce road congestion.

Which Syracuse football players are primed to produce? - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Last month, I wrote about some of the statistical leaps Dino Babers’ teams had made on offense in his second year on the job at his previous head coaching stops. Those jumps in performance make one wonder who might be the Syracuse players primed to make leaps forward on the field in 2017.

First, take a look back before looking forward.

The top two rushers for Bowling Green under Babers in both 2014 and 2015 were Travis Greene and Fred Coppet. Here are their stat lines in those two seasons:

  • Greene – 180 rushes for 949 yards (5.3 yds/carry) and 12 TDs, 222 rushes for 1,298 yards (5.8 yds/carry) and 15 TDs
  • Coppet – 141 rushes for 764 yards (5.4 tds/carry) and 6 TDs, 146 rushes for 826 yards (5.7 yds/carry) and 5 TDs
Greene was the smaller, slashing back while Coppet was more of the hammer for the Falcons. Both players improved from one season to the next with Greene developing into a bigger threat.

If Dontae Strickland can add a half-yard to his average, his output would creep up to four yards a pop. That would also likely make the offense run a little smoother, converting third downs and giving the offense even more opportunities. If he can do even better tan that half-yard increase and get more carries, he could be the first 1,000-yard rusher at SU since Jerome Smith in 2012.

Football recruiting update: St. John’s DT Cameron Goode is headed to Virginia Tech (washingtonpost.com; Bogage)

...
» DeMatha 2019 defensive back Nick Cross is quietly becoming very popular among college coaches. Late Tuesday he added an offer from Syracuse. On Monday he added one from Virginia Tech. In late May, Mississippi State and Kentucky came calling. It proves seven-on-seven passing leagues do matter to scouts. They get a much cleaner look at how defensive backs read quarterbacks and what they can do in one-on-one situations.

» Hayfield 2018 wide receiver Brian Cobbs’s recruitment has turned into a two-team race between Maryland and North Carolina State. Both have been pulling hard on Cobbs, a possession receiver with big-play potential. Cobbs went to a passing camp in Raleigh, N.C., with teammates last summer where he immediately impressed Wolfpack coaches. Maryland is looking to add a sure set of hands and close friend of quarterback Caleb Henderson, the Terrapins’ starting quarterback and son of Eric Henderson, Hayfield’s coach.

» H.D. Woodson 2019 wide receiver Edward Hendrix is down to 10 schools to choose from. He cut his list Tuesday to the following teams but is still willing to hear new scholarship options. Hendrix is considering Maryland, Syracuse, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Temple, North Carolina and Kentucky.

Camille Jones, mother of Chandler, Arthur and Jon, dead at 55 due to diabetes (PS; Bailey)

Camille Jones, the mother of former Syracuse football standouts Chandler and Arthur Jones III, as well as MMA star Jon "Bones" Jones, has died at 55 years old.

Arthur Jones III announced the news on Instagram. His mother was in a long battle with diabetes.

Camille and Arthur Jones Jr. raised arguably the most athletic family of this generation. Chandler left Syracuse a year early in 2012, was drafted in the first round by the New England Patriots, played a key role in the team's Super Bowl XLIX victory and signed a five-year, $82.5 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals in March.

Arthur III, an NFL defensive tackle since 2010, also has a Super Bowl ring and earned two all-Big East selections during his time playing for SU. Injuries have slowed his career in recent years.

ACC again schedules well for football (newsok.com; Tramel)

The ACC traditionally schedules well. Five guaranteed games a year against Notre Dame helps. So does a variety of traditional showdowns against in-state SEC foes. And a general willingness to schedule well.

Today we continue our annual rankings of college football’s non-conference schedules. Conference schedules are set by others. But non-conference scheduling is determined by each individual school. No excuses. And in the ACC, virtually all the schools play a representative schedule. Here are the ACC rankings:

1. Florida State: Alabama in Atlanta, Louisiana-Monroe, Delaware State, at Florida. Alabama and Florida. Neither in Tallahassee. What a schedule.

2. Pittsburgh: Youngstown State, at Penn State, Oklahoma State, Rice. Two games against teams in the preseason top-10. Wow.

3. Georgia Tech: Tennessee in Atlanta, Jacksonville State, at Central Florida, Georgia. If the Yellow Jackets beat both Tennessee and Georgia, they ought to petition to play in the SEC title game.

4. Clemson: Kent State, Auburn, The Citadel, at South Carolina. Excellent schedule that gets even better if South Carolina rebounds under Will Muschamp.

Florida State adds a 2018 three-star defensive back recruit (tomahawknation.com; Miller)

Late Wednesday night, 2018 DB Jonathan Huggins from Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland committed to Florida State, according to Chris Nee of Noles247.

The 6’2 200 lb. recruit is ranked the No. 1599 overall player according to 247 Composite Rankings as well as the No. 114 safety and No. 223 player in Florida.

The Seminoles first offered Huggins in May of 2017, one of his 29 total offers. Some of those other schools include UCF, Wake Forest, VT, Syracuse, UConn, Colorado State, Purdue and Missouri among others.

Huggins was at Jimbo Fisher Football Camp on Wednesday, his first time on campus. Rick Trickett was the FSU recruiter working to get the young player’s pledge.

Florida State’s 2018 recruiting class remains at the No. 7 rank in the country and No. 2 in the ACC. Huggins is the third defensive back to commit to the Garnet and Gold in the 2018 class, joining four-stars Anthony Lytton and Asante Samuel Jr., both who are projected corner backs. In total, FSU has 11 commitments from the 2018 class.

Update: The Staff wants to see some academic progress from Huggins first before officially accepting his commitment; should that happen you can expect him in this class.

Check out some of his highlights below:

3-star N.Y. RB Stevie Scott still 'very close' to committing to Rutgers? (nj.com; Hunt)

One prospect stole the show during the second leg of Rutgers' East Coast Elite Camp without even participating in the camp.

All eyes were on Christian Brother Academy (Syracuse, N.Y.) running back Stevie Scott, who admitted after the camp that he was "very close" to committing to Rutgers.
...
...
He also said the staff is excited to bring in a "big back," as they'd like to add a change of pace to the smaller twitchier guys Rutgers had recruited throughout the years.

In 2016, Scott accumulated 1,418 rushing yards and 21 TDs on only 135 carries (10.5 yards per carry). And he eclipsed the 100-yard mark in seven games.

Hence, he holds offers from Rutgers, Boston college, Minnesota, Pitt, Syracuse, UCF, UMass, UConn, Buffalo, Army and others.

Syracuse, his hometown team, was thought to be a major player early on. But that no longer appears to be the case. And there could be some academic improvement required here. But Rutgers is situated well with Scott, who could be a difference-maker out the back-field, adding a new dynamic to the Scarlet Knights' ground game.

Mike Candel among Nassau Hall inductees (newsday.com; Herzog)

...
Russ Cellan, Freeport’s current football coach and 2017 inductee, said he was “more than a little overwhelmed. You wonder how this happened. I’ve been blessed to work at a place with great athletes and great coaches.”

As for a favorite memory, Cellan recalled this moment involving Marlon Greenwood, a former Red Devil who starred at Syracuse University and in the NFL and was in the initial class of the Nassau hall of fame.

“He was a soccer player who kicked for us. Our first game, we’re playing Plainview and we’re killing them. He’s kicking the ball through the end zone on kickoffs but he can’t hit the extra points. It was different for him, timing and all that. So it’s the third quarter, and we score again. The game is way out of hand and I call a timeout. I take out my wallet and pull out a dollar and I say, ‘I’ll bet you a dollar you miss.’ So he goes out there and he splits the upright. I had the dollar in my hand and he comes running off the field and snaps the dollar out of my hand. I figured he was going to go get a Gatorade.”

Then comes the punch line that Cellan clearly relished. “About six or seven years later I’m over his house, he’s in the NFL, and he’s showing me all the stuff on his wall and in his room and I start looking at his scrapbook. I flip the page and there’s the dollar bill. It was incredible. ‘That’s the dollar bill. You remember that?’ How could I forget that?”

It's strawberry picking time in Central NY (PS; Blalock)

Strawberry season started a little late this year but Abbotts Farm in Baldwinsville, NY has acres of ripening berries ready for the picking. William Van Nostrand, of Brewerton, and Kevin Van Nostrand, of Liverpool, with their families, spent the morning gathering several pounds of strawberries. The children ran around to see who could pick the largest strawberry.

Michael Blair, production manager at Abbotts Farm, say they are doing something new this year from now to October. There will be a farmer's market every Wednesday from 3-7pm. There will be will be live music, farmers, craft makers and food trucks. You can enjoy a Wednesday evening picking the season crop from strawberries to pumpkins while enjoying music and buying vegetables in season and crafts.

Interesting that it was reported that Syracuse had the 8th toughest schedule in college football, but the article above says we only have the 12th toughest schedule in the ACC. I'm not sure I believe either.

It is just the ranking of non-conference opponents. Cuse's picks up points playing in the Atlantic and playing Pitt.

Thanks for the clarification. Personally, I think the truth is that we are somewhere between 20-25 most difficult schedule.
