Welcome to National Onion Rings Day!
June 22nd recognizes a batter dipped and deep fried bite of deliciousness that runs rings around other appetizers. It’s National Onion Rings Day!
Also found in Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and some parts of Asia, onion rings exact origin are unknown.
A recipe called “Fried Onions with Parmesan Cheese” is included in John Mollard’s 1802 cookbook The Art of Cookery Made Easy and Refined. Within the recipe, it suggests cutting onions into 1/2 inch rings, dipping them into a batter made of flour, cream, salt, pepper and Parmesan cheese then deep frying them in boiling lard. It recommends serving them with a sauce made of melted butter and mustard.

Central Michigan Chippewas — 2017 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)
As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team preview each week over the summer. SU will continue its 2017 non-conference slate when it hosts Central Michigan on Sept. 16 at the Carrier Dome.
NEW OFFENSE: Central Michigan’s offense is undergoing a change similar to one Syracuse went through in 2016. With offensive coordinator Morris Watts retiring after a coaching career that started in the 1960s, Chippewas head coach John Bonamego turned to former running backs coach Gino Guidugli to run the offense. Once promoted, Guidugli ditched the pro-style offense that had been a staple under Watts, and installed a spread offense. Problem was, Guidugli left to take the running backs coach position at Cincinnati, leaving Bonamego to hire former Northern Michigan coach Chris Ostrowsky, who ran a similar style offense.
WHO TO WATCH FOR: CMU’s shift in offensive philosophy is hurt by the loss of four-year starting quarterback Cooper Rush. Rush left as one of the most prolific passers in school history, throwing for 3,540 yards and 25 touchdowns in his senior season, which was good enough to land him a spot on the Dallas Cowboys. Michigan graduate transfer Shane Morris appears to be in line to start, though he is not necessarily a lock. He will be competing with redshirt freshman Tony Poljan for the position. Whoever starts, he will have plenty of talent around him. Corey Willis, a first-team All-MAC candidate returns after racking up 1,091 receiving yards in 2016. In the backfield, there will be a competition for touches between Romello Ross, Devon Spalding, Jonathan Ward and Berkley Edwards.
PREDICTION: Central Michigan will likely experience plenty of growing pains adopting to a new offensive system, especially with a quarterback competition that will not be settled until the end of summer. The Chippewas’ defense also showed some inconsistency last season, especially in the secondary, as they gave up 222.9 yards per game through the air. SYRACUSE 42, CENTRAL MICHIGAN 17.
BC Adds Future Series with Michigan State (bceagles.com)
Boston College has added a Big Ten opponent and College Football Playoff participant to its future football schedules as the Eagles and Michigan State have agreed to a two-game series. The home-and-home series begins in Chestnut Hill on Sept. 21, 2024 while the Eagles make the return trip to Spartan Stadium on Sept. 20, 2025.
It will be the seventh meeting all-time between the two schools in 2024 at Alumni Stadium and the first since the Eagles' 24-21 victory in the 2007 Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando.
"Philosophically we want to play a strong schedule and adding a future opponent the caliber of Michigan State fits what we want to accomplish," said Boston College William V. Campbell Director of Athletics Martin Jarmond. "To have one of the eight teams that have competed in the College Football playoff come to The Heights will be exciting for our young men competing on the field and our season ticket holders."
Boston College leads the all-time series between the two schools 4-1-1.
The Spartans are the fourth Big Ten opponent on future Boston College football schedules. The Eagles will also line up against Purdue (2018, 2020), Rutgers (2019, 2022, 2026, 2027) and Ohio State (2026, 2027).
Boston College returns 46 letterwinners and 17 starters in 2017 after the Eagles won three consecutive games to close out the 2016 season, including a 36-30 win over Big Ten foe Maryland in the Quick Lane Bowl. It was the first bowl win for the Eagles since 2007 as BC went to the postseason for the third time in the previous four seasons.
BC opens the 2017 season Friday, Sept. 1 at Northern Illinois (9:30 p.m.) on CBS Sports Network. The Eagles open the 2017 home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. vs. Wake Forest (ACC Network Extra).
Season tickets are now available by visiting BCEagles.com or calling 617-552-4622 (GOBC).

Apparently, the ACC has added Army to the list of approved "power" non-conference opponents...
From Syracuse.com: How the Syracuse football schedule gets made: Q&A with John Wildhack, Herm Frazier
One nonconference game must be against a Power-Five opponent or select independent, such as Notre Dame, BYU or Army. Syracuse has met its Power-Five mandate through the 2026 season. This puts the ACC in line with the SEC, both of which require one "power" OOC opponent each year. This could be a team from any of the other P5 conferences, or it could be Notre Dame, BYU, or Army. This should be a real benefit for teams like Syracuse and Boston College, both of which could use an easier OOC schedule and are a reasonable drive from West Point, NY.

2017 Conference Story Lines: ACC (shakinthesouthland.com; Kantor)
Florida State vs. Alabama in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium
Count your blessings Clemson fans. The Tigers start the season with a noon kick off so you can make it to Clemson, celebrate the glorious National Championship and a nice win over Kent State and get back for one of the most interesting Chick-fil-A Kickoff games in a while.
Florida State is the early favorite to win the ACC - though winning in Clemson may prove daunting if the Tigers find a QB. Alabama is the early favorite to win the National Championship and like the UNC basketball team, will have vengeance on their mind as they look to top the Tar Heels in becoming the least likable redemption story in sports.
While the loser of this game will still have a puncher’s chance to make the playoff, the ripple affect of this game is huge. Would an 11-1 Clemson non-champion make the playoff if their loss came to a #1 ranked FSU? How would back-to-back Alabama losses to ACC opponents impact league perception of the SEC?
On top of all that, it’s opening week. You’ll be salivating for quality football, and it is the first meaningful game in what could turn out to be one of the best football venues in America.
How Will Lamar Jackson’s Heisman Encore Go?
Both Florida State and Alabama return their QB, but there’s a more interesting QB returning this season - Lamar Jackson. Jackson could be seen jumping over the Syracuse defense a season ago. He seemed to wrap up the Heisman after a week four demolition of Florida State. That was the peak though.

Syracuse Football Using Virtual Reality to Teach Quarterbacks (herosports.com; Oxley)
The Syracuse football program is utilizing technology to give their quarterbacks a leg up. The Orange QBs are watching film in virtual reality so they can get an even more in-depth study from practice sessions.
Co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Sean Lewis -- himself a college quarterback (and tight end) at Wisconsin from 2004-2007 -- runs his quarterbacks through VR film sessions following practices.
As coach Lewis points out, the virtual reality allows the quarterback to literally be inside the play while watching film, giving them a much more expansive look at the film than just a projector on the wall alone.
