Welcome to National Handshake Day!
The last Thursday of each June, people across the nation observe National Handshake Day.
Of all the various forms of greeting, the handshake is perhaps one of the most ancient.
The origin of the handshake is hard to pinpoint. As it is a non-verbal mode of communication, it may have existed before written records. Theories suggest it was a way for medieval knights, Roman soldiers and other weapon carrying men to check for hidden daggers by grasping each other’s forearms in greeting.
Archaeological ruins in ancient Greece support this theory. The funerary stele depicts two soldiers shaking hands and dates back to 5th century BC.
An even older record in Egypt suggests the handshake held a different sort of power, the power of giving. According to Babylonian custom, kings would grasp the hand of the statue of the god Marduk before taking the throne. This act was repeated annually during the festival of Zagmuk to carry his power over into the next year. Even conquering Assyria continued the tradition.

Ed Orgeron Returns to Syracuse
LSU Tigers — 2017 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)
As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team preview each week over the summer. SU will continue its 2017 non-conference slate when it plays LSU on Sept. 23 in Baton Rouge.
NEW OFFENSE COORDINATOR: When Ed Orgeron was named as Les Miles replacement after the 2016 season, he knew he wanted to modernize the LSU offense. For $1.5 million, Orgeron plucked offensive coordinator Matt Canada away from Pitt. It was top dollar for a coordinator, but one of Orgeron’s priorities was to move away from a ball-control, run-heavy offense into a more pass-heavy offense with pre-snap misdirection. Canada was the mastermind behind a Panthers offense that recorded the highest season point total in school history (508) while also handing eventual national champion Clemson its only loss of the season.
WHO TO WATCH FOR: The Tigers return senior quarterback Danny Etling, who threw for 2,123 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. Though Leonard Fournette is now in the NFL, LSU’s will still have plenty of depth in the backfield, with Derrius Guice. Fournette fought through an ankle injury in 2016, which gave Guice an opportunity to rush for 1,387 yards and 15 touchdowns. On defense, the Tigers announced earlier in June the return of Adren Key, the team’s best defensive linemen. In February, the school had announced that Key was taking a leave of absence for “personal reasons,” but in June, the school said in a release that he was returning in time for summer school and that he had also had offseason shoulder surgery. Key had averaged 1.1 sacks per game in 2016, leading the SEC.

2017 Miami Hurricanes Football Game Preview: Week 7 vs. Syracuse (state oftheu.com; ironmanfootball)
History
Miami and Syracuse have had a one-sided relationship where Miami has dominated the series 11-2 since 1990. There was one true classic played in 1992 where Dennis Erickson’s ‘Canes took on the Orange coached by Paul Pasqualoni and it came down to the 3 yard line to preserve Miami’s undefeated regular season. Syracuse infamously blew Miami out in 1998 on Donovan McNabb’s senior day. The ‘Canes and Orange haven’t played since 2003 which seems crazy since both are in the ACC now and are a natural “rival” of old Big East squads.
2017
Heading into 2017, the S&P+ predicts Miami to be ranked #18 and Syracuse to be ranked #60. Miami plays Syracuse sandwiched between Georgia Tech and North Carolina. The Orangeman on the other hand have a hell of a run playing at LSU, at NC State, hosting Pitt then Clemson before traveling to Miami and FSU. A run like that is beyond body blows and the #Canes have more talent and more experienced coaching than the Dino Babers led staff in Syracuse.

Orange Football Turns its Attention to Will Levis | Otto's Grove (.com; Kelly)
With Tyler, Texas quarterback Chance Amie announcing on Monday that he was going to stay close to home and play for Major Applewhite at Houston, the Syracuse football staff is moving on to the next target on the recruiting board: Connecticut signal caller Will Levis.
Levis has had a huge spring and summer, and has seen his profile blow up as much as just about anyone in the northeast, and maybe even the country. With several outstanding camp performances, the 6-foot-4, 222 pound Levis has picked up offers from Florida State, Ole Miss, and North Carolina, in addition to offers from Iowa, Northwestern, and of course Syracuse.
The athletic QB was a standout at last Sunday’s Syracuse camp, where he earned an offer from the Orange after having been firmly on their radar for some time. Levis had previously visited campus and spent time with the coaches in March, and as his profile has soared, so too has his place on the Orange recruiting board.

Syracuse Football: Chance Amie Commits to Houston. What Now? (itlh.com; Ross)
While Syracuse hoped to add another member to the 2018 recruiting class, as well as its first quarterback in Chance Amie, he wound up picking Houston.
As many Syracuse football fans sat on the edge of their seats, they wound up disappointed in the end. On Monday night, 2018 QB recruit Chance Amie chose to stay close to home, committing to in-state Houston over the Orange.
The 6-foot-3, 191 pound quarterback from Robert E. Lee HS (TX), who holds a three-star rating from At their request, this network is being blocked from this site., also held notable offers from Rutgers, North Carolina, Iowa State, and Virginia.
With Amie committing elsewhere, the Orange remain at eleven commits in the 2018 class, with none of them being quarterbacks. Should there be no changes to the existing roster, the 2018 roster will see Rex Culpepper, Mo Hasan, Clayton Welch, and Tommy DeVito on the depth chart behind current starter Eric Dungey.
After missing out on Amie, the Orange are still without a QB for 2018, meaning the staff will need to launch an all-out blitz to land one. As it stands, the top QB on the board for 2018 is Will Levis. He jumped onto the radar of the coaching staff after a strong camp performance that landed him an offer.

College Football's Top 50 Innovations (50-31) (athlonsports.com)
The Athlon Sports era began with the publication of our first SEC preview magazine in 1967, and the intervening half-century has brought so many seismic shifts to the college football landscape that we wonder if our founder, Jerry McCoin, would even recognize the sport that inspired him to launch a company. In honor of our golden anniversary, here are the 50 most impactful changes, innovations and outright breakthroughs to hit college football in the last 50 years.

College Football's Top 50 Innovations (50-31)
50. Smurf Turf
Talk all you want about Kentucky bluegrass, but the stuff Boise State plays on is really blue. Back in 1986, the Broncos were set to install a new artificial turf field at Albertsons Stadium, and BSU’s athletic director at the time, Gene Bleymaier, was upset that no one would know the school spent $750,000 on the carpet. So, he decided to make it a distinctive color. Visitors from 37 different countries and all 50 states have checked it out, and the school isn’t about to change things: In 2010, a survey revealed 90% of Boise residents love the blue turf.

Gators and fat-cat SEC could spend FSU, ACC into oblivion (orlandosentinel.com; Bianchi)
Another day, another national championship for the Florida Gators.
Yawn.
This time, it was the baseball team. A couple of weeks ago, it was the dynastic track-and-field team. A couple of weeks before that, it was the women’s tennis team. Since 2010, the Gators have won 17 national championships in a multitude of sports.
Beware, Florida State. It’s only a matter of time before UF’s football team is paying, er, playing for national championships, too. Ditto, the basketball team.
You see, nobody in this part of the country buys, er, wins national championships like UF does.
This column is not meant so much to prop up the Gators for being an all-sports giant, although they certainly are. After coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s baseball team beat LSU 6-1 to win UF’s first College World Series championship Tuesday night, UF became the only program since integration that has baseball, football and basketball national championships in its trophy case.
This column is meant more as a warning for Florida State and its fellow ACC members. Beware of the Gators and their filthy rich Southeastern Conference brethren, who — with all of their SEC Network money — could be on the verge of spending you into irrelevance.
