Welcome to National Poinsettia Day!

Poinsettia Day celebrates the beautiful red flowering plant that has come to be associated with Christmas, the poinsettia. The plant is native to Mexico, where it was used by the Aztecs; its flowers were used to produce red dye, and its sap to treat fevers. Franciscan missionaries in Mexico used it in the 17th century as part of nativity processions, the first time it became associated with Christianity. A story has been passed down about a poor Mexican girl who didn't have anything to honor baby Jesus with at a procession. An angel told her any gift from the heart was a good gift, so she gathered weeds from the roadside. When she placed them around the manger they transformed into poinsettias. In Mexico the flowers are called La Flores de la Nochebuena, or the Flowers of the Holy Night, and are displayed on December 12, the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. This day marks the beginning of the Christmas season.

Syracuse Football End of Season Grades: Eric Dungey (itlh.com; Peelman)

Inside The Loud House breaks down the play of Eric Dungey now that the season is over for Syracuse Football

Syracuse Football had a shoulda, woulda, coulda kind of year. The Syracuse Football squad finished 4-8 on the year; far below what they were expecting. Sadly, a lot of the blame for yet another losing season will fall on quarterback Eric Dungey; whether its deserved or not.

As we learned this year, last year, and the year before that, if Dungey doesn’t finish the season, then the Orange lose a lot in November. This season was pure proof of that.

Without him on the field, the Orange had little wish to play defense or offense without their leader playing. As you probably saw, the defense which was stellar all year until Dungey got hurt, suddenly looked atrocious. He is the heart and soul of this team and plays like it week in and week out.

Syracuse Football: Schedule change is a huge win for program (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

A couple of changes to the Syracuse football schedule have worked out beautifully. ITLH breaks down the good news

When the Syracuse football squad has missed bowl action since 2013, you start to appreciate the little things.

Since the beginning of December, the dome dudes have received a pair of scheduling updates. Both of them help this team greatly.

So we’ll start with the latest news. If you haven’t heard, Syracuse football was scheduled to play the Fighting Irish in 2018. That has not changed, but what has is the venue.

Originally this game was scheduled to take place in the lovely confines of South Bend. For those who are unaware of the history, Notre Dame is one of the toughest places to play in the entire country. Not just because of the raucous fan-base, but also all the tradition: touchdown Jesus, the Heisman winners, the campus, everything about the campus is historic.

ACC Blog (espn; Adelson)

Willie Taggart had a ready answer when he was asked to describe the offensive system he plans to run at Florida State.

“Talkin’ about the Gulf Coast offense, huh?” he asked.

“How would I describe it?” Taggart paused, perhaps for effect.

“Lethal simplicity,” Taggart said.

Next to him, athletic director Stan Wilcox beamed. Those two words may have meant more than anything else Taggart said during his introductory news conference last week. Taggart has much to do during his first few months on the job, but among the most intriguing items on the checklist is how he will reimagine and modernize an offense that has been stuck in the past.

Cosplay comes to campus | The NewsHouse | Syracuse University and Community News - S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications (thenewshouse.com; Fraser)

Toadette’s pink mushroom hat bobbed above the group’s heads, while the Night King from Game of Thrones chatted with Jack from Mass Effect. Captain Blade stood to their right, admiring his duct tape shield. The cosplayers were huddled in the Shaffer Art Building, waiting for the contest to begin.

In its second iteration, the cosplay costume contest on Dec. 10 saw costumes representing all cosplay genres, from superheroes to anime and video games. Most of the contestants were students of AIC 221: Cosplay, a class that focuses on making costumes and studying cosplay culture, but the event was open to all members of the public.

I have never seen an SU Football player as competitive as Eric Dungey - and it's not even close.

He is a great football player - he is fearless and he is a winner.

I have to believe that next year he will establish himself as a true Syracuse University Football Legend - if he has not done so already.

It has been a true thrill to watch him play over the past three years - from the first pass he threw for a TD against CMU, to his courageous performance in the heartbreaking loss at Florida State this past fall.

What a player!
