Happy-National-Grilled-Cheese-Day.jpg.jpg

Welcome to National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day!

A simple combination of bread, cheese, and a little butter has become one of the greatest comfort foods ever created: the grilled cheese sandwich! Cheese and bread have been being combined since the ancient Romans, but it wasn't until the twentieth century that the grilled cheese sandwich began to take shape.

Two factors set the stage for the rise of grilled cheese: inexpensive processed cheese and sliced bread. James L. Kraft opened his first cheese plant in 1914 in Illinois. The following year he invented pasteurized cheese—cheap processed cheese that wouldn't spoil when it was being transported long distances. Shortly thereafter, in the late 1920s, sliced bread came on the market. The sandwiches made at this time often had names like "toasted cheese" and "melted cheese." Recipes had grated cheese with a binder such as salad dressing, white sauce, or mustard.

Orange Watch: Looking for a Syracuse Orange-tint in the 2018 NFL Draft - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: With the NFL Draft coming up April 26-28 at the Dallas Cowboys’ palatial AT&T Stadium, will there be a Syracuse player selected during the three-day, seven round spectacle? Only one ex-SU player has heard his name announced as a draft selection by one of the league’s 32 teams over the last three drafts, with 2015 and ’17 joining 2008 as the only other years in which there was not at least one former Orange player among the eligible players selected in a particular year. And that’s a streak that goes all the way back to…1975 (there’s only been five Syracuse NFL draft-less years dating back to 1952)!

As we all know, Denver Broncos punter-in-transition Riley Dixon has been the only Syracuse draft pick since Jay Bromley (New York Giants) and Marquis Spruill (Atlanta) were 2014 selections; with Dixon making the Broncos roster as the seventh round pick in 2016, signing a four-year, $2.4M rookie deal and performing well enough for the team to release seven year incumbent Britton Colquitt who was making more than Dixon’s entire salary per season.

Dixon certainly had a respectable rookie campaign in ’16, finishing 16th in the league in average with 28 kicks landing inside an opponent’s 20 yard line, one of only four punters with over 4,000 total yards, a long distance boot of 68 yards, and besting Britton Colquitt’s numbers who had moved on to Cleveland.

Why one of the country's most-feared D-lines decided to stay together (espn; Low)

At a time when many of his contemporaries are prepping for the NFL draft, Christian Wilkins watches intently and shouts words of encouragement as Clemson's younger defensive linemen go through some extra work on pass-rush moves after a recent spring practice session.

Dabo Swinney calls it ownership. Wilkins takes it a step further. The Tigers' 6-foot-4, 300-pound All-American defensive tackle calls it finishing what he started.

"You want to make it better than you found it, and I'm not done doing that here at Clemson," said Wilkins, shedding some light on why he and two of his defensive line brethren at Clemson -- defensive ends Clelin Ferrell and Austin Bryant -- passed on the NFL draft and decided to return to school, giving the Tigers the kind of defensive front for the 2018 season that most teams can only dream about.

More than ever, the fleeting nature of football makes it rare that players projected to go in the first couple of rounds of the draft elect to hang around for another season of college football. It's even rarer that defensive linemen do so, particularly when everybody at the pro level is looking for those guys who can rush the passer and collapse the pocket.

Syracuse VA Medical Center needs $70M in repairs, upgrades, Schumer says (PS; Weiner)

The Syracuse VA Medical Center needs almost $70 million in repairs and upgrades, and U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says the projects should be a high priority now that Congress has set aside extra money for VA construction work.

Congress included about $4 billion for VA construction projects in a budget bill signed into law last month by President Donald Trump.

The money would help pay for about $500 million in projects requested at VA medical centers across Upstate New York, Schumer said Wednesday. But the senator said he's concerned the projects may be delayed by the federal bureaucracy.

"The money is there, it's sitting in the VA department," Schumer said in a conference call with reporters. "They ought to make every effort to get that money out to our hospitals and begin construction."
