Welcome to Chinese Language Day!

As the world’s most widely spoken language it seems appropriate that Mandarin Chinese has one day every year dedicated to it. This officially marked day of Mandarin language celebration was established by the United Nations as a way of celebrating the language’s history and overall contribution to the world. It is hoped that by having one day every year to celebrate Mandarin Chinese this additional focus on the language will encourage more people around the world to take it up. With China likely to become the largest economy in the world it is important that the wider world becomes interestingly more proficient in this wonderful language. Chinese Language Day is annually celebrated in April. A great way to get involved in the celebration is to join a Mandarin class or attend one of the many Confucian Hubs now established by China in countries around the world.

Orange Watch: How does three divide into six for the Syracuse football team? - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: As year three of the Dino Babers era transitions from spring practice to summer workouts, and with the roster depth expanding after three recruiting cycles, the goal is a bowl game and it will take six wins to become eligible.

There’s a lot to be excited for heading into the 2018 Syracuse football season kicking off in Kalamazoo, Mich. In 135 days.

For one, even with the road opener against a team with a former member of the Orange program in charge, the September schedule shows three winnable games against the MAC’s Western Michigan, Wagner and Connecticut, leaving three wins needed in eight ACC meetings, plus Notre Dame.

Then there’s the quarterback position, which Babers proclaimed in multiple interviews over the past week to be in the program’s best shape this century, with the duo of Eric Dungey and Tommy DeVito playing behind a veteran offensive line, having a strong running game and tight end play, but some questions as to whom will emerge at wide receiver.

Strong defensive line play was also highlighted by Babers following spring practices, as he has built an eight man rotation of tackles and ends that should be proficient in chasing down quarterbacks and containing an opponent’s ground game That unit will help offset a linebackers group which has almost been completely transformed. The starting four DB’s return and all should be a year better, strengthening a position that struggled at times during Babers early tenure.

ACC Football Rx: Actual History of the ACC (accfootballrx.com; HokieMark)

Actual History of the ACC
We've already touched on ACC history as it pertains to WVU and VT, but this is a broader overview of how we got the conference that exists today...

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE ROOTS
The Southern Conference was born on Feb. 26, 1921. Founding members were Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, NC State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Washington & Lee. Except for W&L, all of those teams are in either the SEC or the ACC today.

The following year, 1922, the Southern Conference added Florida, LSU, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane, and Vanderbilt. So in some sense, those schools were all "expansion teams".

That's when the league took a strange turn. In 1923 it added Sewanee (a Division III school today), and the following year, 1924, it added VMI (a Division I FCS school now). Four years later, in 1928, Duke was added - but back then the Blue Devils were competing for national championships at the highest level, so this was not a bad decision.

However, eventually the Southern Conference grew too large, so in 1932 fifteen teams split off to form the Southeastern Conference, or SEC: Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi St, Georgia Tech, Tulane, Sewanee. Yes, Tulane and little Sewanee tagged along!

UVa football notebook: Mendenhall still examining how new kickoff rule will affect Cavaliers (dailyprogress, com; Blum)

Sam Blum is a Newhouse grad...

Bronco Mendenhall had just finished up practice on Thursday morning before joining the ACC coaches’ spring football teleconference. The Cavaliers have three more practices before their spring game practice at Scott Stadium on April 28.

The third-year head coach addressed several topics with the media on Thursday morning, as did most ACC coaches. Mendenhall talked about the new kickoff rule, playing spring games and the team’s improved fitness.

Here’s a rundown of what was discussed.

New kickoff rule

College football’s new kickoff rule, ratified last week, will allow any kickoff returner who calls a fair catch inside the 25-yard line to get a touchback, which previously was only the case when the ball was caught in the end zone.

Projected wind chills across Upstate New York at noon today.

Upstate NY weather: A final January-like day before the warmup (PS; Coin)

Spring weather is almost here, but we'll have to endure one more day of January first.

Today's wind chills be in the 20s and 30s across Upstate New York. That will feel like a typical mid-January day rather than April 20, when normal high temperatures are pushing 60.

There could even be a dusting of snow today.

"Expect a cool day with a mix of clouds, sun, and a few passing flurries today," the National Weather Service in Buffalo said.

Tonight, high pressure builds over Upstate New York.

"This will be the start of a long stretch of dry and tranquil weather across the region into early next week," the weather service said.

So, I guess I have to ask - what's the significance of the Jim Collins bio in this thread?
