Welcome to National Oatmeal Day!

National Oatmeal Day celebrates oatmeal, which is made from hulled oats called groats. The groats are heated, which gives them a nutty flavor, and then they can be milled, steel-cut, or rolled. Steel-cut oats are thinly sliced with steel blades, and rolled oats are steamed and then rolled into a flat shape. Oatmeal can be eaten uncooked and used in muesli, or it can be cooked with water and be made into a porridge. Oatmeal can also be used in other recipes, such as oatmeal cookies and granola breakfast cereals. The United States produces more oatmeal than any other country, although 93% of the crop is used for animal feed. Still, over 40 million bushels are used for human consumption each year. Quaker Oats Company is the largest oatmeal producer, and was officially formed in 1901, after the merging of various oats companies including the Quaker Mill Company. That company had created Quaker Oats in 1877, which was the first trademarked American cereal. Oatmeal is a very healthy whole grain food that lowers cholesterol and fights inflammation. It also reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer. Being that it is such a versatile food with so many benefits, it is only natural that it would have its own day!

Syracuse's offensive line is unsung hero of bowl-clinching win (what we learned) (PS; Bailey)

Happy Monday.

Early in each week during Syracuse football's 2018 season, before we turn the page to the next opponent, we'll review everything we learned from the previous contest. As often as possible, this analysis will be based on a second watch of the game, as well as postgame interviews and conversations behind the scenes.

This week, among other topics, our notebook will hit on the pass protection that paved the way for Orange quarterback Eric Dungey's big day, the team's shuffling defensive personnel and how N.C. State quarterback Ryan Finley shredded the SU secondary for most of the contest.

Let's dive in:

Protecting the pocket

Syracuse's offensive line appeared to turn in a solid performance on first glance, keeping Dungey clean as he picked apart the Wolfpack defense.
In an effort to better evaluate the play of the front five (and others) in pass protection, we tracked the time between each snap on a passing play and the point of release, tuck for a scramble or contact for a sack.

The length of time an offensive line is asked to block for likely varies from coach to coach and system to system. Duke head coach David Cutliffe told the Raleigh News & Observer in 2016 that a quarterback should release each pass within 2.8 seconds.

We'll be a bit more generous and say the offensive line must hold up for three seconds for a defender in the backfield not to count as a pressure.

ACC Power Rankings: How high does Syracuse football soar after N.C. State win? (PS; Carlson)

It's a strange year in the ACC, with the top of the standings populated with a number of programs that don't have reputations for being football powerhouses.

While Clemson has separated itself from the rest of the ACC by a wide margin, the next three teams in this week's power rankings are probably surprising most observers with their success.
Two of them are off to their best starts in more than a decade. A third is nationally ranked for the first time since 2001.

The ACC is a mixed-up place.

14. Louisville
Record: 2-6 (0-5)
Last week's result: Lost 56-35 vs. Wake Forest
Last week's ranking: 14
This week's game: Saturday at Clemson, noon
Outlook: The only drama left in the Louisville season is whether head coach Bobby Petrino's expensive contract buyout helps him survives to spend next season in purgatory.
The Cardinals lost by 21 points in what seemed like their best chance to get a league win this season. All of Louisville's remaining games come against teams with winning records.
That includes a sure-to-be-ugly nationally broadcast game with Clemson this week.
...
...
3. Syracuse

Record: 6-2 (3-2)
Last week's result: Won 51-41 vs. North Carolina State
Last week's ranking: 7
This week's game: Saturday at Wake Forest, noon
Outlook: Just like Boston College, the Orange has an argument for No. 2.
Syracuse has split its last four games, which have been decided by an average of six points and included three overtime periods. The Orange has shown it can play with anybody, including Clemson, but has also struggled to get comfortable separation against peer schools.
This week's game was highlighted by an impressive display of mental toughness from quarterback Eric Dungey, who shook off a benching the previous week to throw for 411 yards.
Syracuse was ranked in both major national polls this week for the first time since 2001.

The Athletic 130: Syracuse is turning a corner under Dino... (thaathletic.com; Vannini; subscription required)

We had seen Syracuse start well under Dino Babers before. But this time, the Orange have finally pushed through to bowl eligibility.

In 2016, the Orange started 4-4 but lost their final four games. Last year, they started 4-3 and lost their last five after upsetting Clemson. Injuries to starting quarterback Eric Dungey derailed the past two years. But this year, Syracuse started 4-0 and is 2-2 since then. And Dungey is still playing.

A blown lead at Clemson was followed by an overtime loss at Pitt, but the Orange have defeated North Carolina and N.C. State the past two games. They have moved into the top 25 in The Athletic 130 and will go bowling for the first time since 2013.

“It means a lot,” Babers told reporters of bowl eligibility. “I can still think back to the basketball game where I had to come out and speak to the community for the very first time. If you’re going to speak to our community, the basketball game is where you need to be.

Five key plays in NC State’s loss to Syracuse (newsobserver.com; Giglio)

N.C. State was better than it was last week at Clemson but not good enough to beat Syracuse on the road on Saturday night.

The Orange rolled up 561 total yards and were superior on special teams in a 51-41 win over the 22nd-ranked Wolfpack.

There were many positives — the comeback after a slow start, the bounce back of star receiver Kelvin Harmon to name two — for N.C. State (5-2, 2-2 ACC) but there were more problems (pass coverage, penalties and pass protection).

Five key plays in N.C. State’s first loss to Syracuse since 2013:

1. Beginning of the end
Score: Syracuse 0, N.C. State 0
Time: 13:32 first quarter
Field position: 2nd and 4 at the Syracuse 40

Clemson carved up N.C. State’s secondary for 380 yards last week. Syracuse, as you would expect, would identify the same pressure points and attack them early.
On his first attempt of the game, Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey went after N.C. State freshman defensive back Tanner Ingle.

Dungey had freshman receiver Taj Harris in the slot, to his left, matched up on Ingle. Without any pressure from N.C. State’s defensive front, Dungey waited for Harris to work the middle of the field.

Ingle, whose strength has been in the run game, had help but Dungey made a great throw to Harris at the Syracuse 45 for a 24-yard gain.

Syracuse football ready to go bowling | The NewsHouse (thenewshouse.com; Booth)

The Syracuse Orange upset No. 22 North Carolina State Wolfpack in a 51-41 shootout Saturday night. A tremendous amount of firepower was on full display in the Carrier Dome as both teams combined for over 1,100 yards of offense.

The win pushes the Orange to 6-2 on the season, which makes SU bowl eligible for the first time since 2013.

“We still have goals that are out there, goals that need to be met,” head coach Dino Baberssaid. “We’re not satisfied and we will not settle.”

Syracuse starting quarterback Eric Dungey led the Orange offense to their fourth 50-point game of the season. Dungey finished the game with 411 passing yards and three touchdowns.

The four-year starter has been criticized for his inability to throw accurately deep downfield, but on Saturday night Dungey put his critics to bed. He got off to a hot start by posting 24 points in the first quarter, including an 82-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Nykeim Johnson only six minutes into the game.

More than 40,000 fans witnessed Eric Dungey break a seemingly untouchable record, previously held by Syracuse-great and former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. With a third quarter touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Taj Harris, Dungey became Syracuse University’s all-time total yards leader. McNabb stood atop the list for 20 years.

NC State 41 Syracuse 51: POSTGAME QUOTES (packinsider.com; Bradham)

Last night NC State lost their second straight game, falling to Syracuse 41-51 on the road. Here are some of the postgame quotes from head coach Dave Doeren, Quarterback Ryan Finley, Wide Receiver Kelvin Harmon and Linebacker Germaine Pratt.

NC STATE HEAD COACH DAVE DOEREN

Opening statement:

“Heck of a football game. I’m proud of our guys for finding a way to get back into it and make it a three-point game there at the end. Three minutes left, we had an unfortunate interception. We were shorthanded with some injuries coming in, and a lot of our guys got their first starts. Teshaun Smith, a freshman corner, fought a hard battle. We needed to score on every possession because that’s the kind of game it was. We were one possession away from winning that game. I’ve got to give Syracuse credit. Those kids played really well.”

On the defense’s inability to slow down Syracuse’s offense:

“Didn’t make enough plays on the ball. We got spooked a little bit with all the pass interference penalties being called. We were afraid to even touch a guy, and that’s just the way it is. [Syracuse’s] receivers are really good players. We’ve got to have tighter coverage.”

On his message to the team during the game:

“I just told the guys to keep playing, run our plays, and not panic. We’ll play ourselves back into the game, and we’ll get it. It played out how you would want it to in the end. We got the ball with three minutes
, but they stopped us.”

ACC Panic Room: NC State needs to start on time (wralsportsfan.com; video; Brownlow and Ovies)

Lauren Brownlow and Joe Ovies discuss another missed opportunity for NC State. Plus, what's up with Duke and Pittsburgh given us wild games every season?

Dungey, Syracuse hand N.C. State 2nd straight loss (greensboro.com; Hyman and Giglio)

Syracuse 51
N.C. State 41

N.C. State made a bunch of big plays, Syracuse just made more.

Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey outdueled N.C. State’s Ryan Finley to lead the Orange to a 51-41 home win over No. 22 N.C. State on Saturday night.

The two offenses combined for 1,102 yards, 953 through the air, and 51 first downs but it was a defensive play, an interception by junior linebacker Andrew Armstrong with 2:18 left, that sealed the win for the Orange (6-2, 3-2 ACC).

The Wolfpack (5-2, 2-2 ACC) offense recovered from a lopsided loss at Clemson last week but the defense couldn’t slow the Orange’s fast-break attack. Finley threw for a career-high 473 yards and receiver Kelvin Harmon rebounded from a subpar outing with 11 catches for a career-high 247 yards.

But N.C. State couldn’t avoid its second straight loss and first loss to Syracuse since 2013. Finley, who completed 26 of 44 passes and had three touchdowns, had a chance to pull out a comeback win.

Down 44-41, the Wolfpack got the ball back with 3:12 left on its own 14-yard line. Finley missed a first-down pass to receiver Thayer Thomas and then had a dump off to Reggie Gallaspy go for no gain. On third down, Syracuse pressured Finley and his pass over the middle was picked off by Armstrong at the N.C. State 23

Kelvin Harmon had a career-defining day in NC State’s loss to Syracuse (backingthepack.com; Muma)

Setting aside the wide variety of annoying things that come with losing, it’s a bummer that Kelvin Harmon’s huge performance on Saturday is quickly going to dissipate into the ether because NC State lost. In fact, I’ve already blocked out what I’m writing about and have moved on to eating a lot of candy to make myself feel better.

Hm? Oh right, sorry.

Before I go ahead and burn the tape from yesterday, it’s worth noting just how good Kelvin Harmon was against Syracuse. Eleven receptions, 247 yards, two touchdowns. He’s always been capable of a huge game like this one, and when he’s at his best, it’s amazing to watch. He about near saved State’s bacon. (Alas, there’s only one of him, and the one of him only plays offense.)

NC State football vs. Syracuse: The good, the bad and the ugly (technicianonline.com; Schnittker)

Graduate quarterback Ryan Finley and junior receiver Kelvin Harmon both had career games at Syracuse for NC State football Saturday. However, mostly due to a horrific performance from its secondary, the Wolfpack lost 51-41.

This game was definitely a mixed bag, with some encouraging signs and some things that need to be cleaned up. Let’s take a look at the good, the bad and the ugly from NC State’s second loss of the season.

The good: Passing offense — Following one of the worst games of his NC State career in a blowout loss to Clemson, Finley bounced back with a career game for the Pack. The sixth-year signal caller moved the ball down the field with authority, completing 26 of 44 pass attempts for a career-best 473 yards, three touchdowns and a pick.

The Syracuse defense did not have an answer for Finley’s deep ball, as he had touchdown passes for 67 and 74 yards in the first half. Most of Finley’s big day came from his connection with Harmon, who caught 11 passes for a career-high 247 yards and two scores, including the aforementioned 74-yarder.

Harmon also had a quiet game against the Tigers the week before, but returned to what he does best against the Orange, going up over defenders for contested catches and using his route running to gain separation and stretch the field.

Syracuse was just not a good match up for NC State :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsports.com; video; Payne & Harding)

Marilyn Payne and analyst Dave Harding recap NC State's loss to Syracuse.

Resurgent Eric Dungey leads Syracuse football to bowl eligibility - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

As so often happens, one defensive play can decide an offensive shootout. Alton Robinson’s pass rush on Ryan Finley set up Andrew Armstrong’s interception with just over two minutes left, enabling Syracuse to march down a short field for the clinching touchdown in their 51-41 home win over #22 North Carolina State. Robinson was right on Finley, forcing him to throw earlier than he wanted, and Armstrong jumped the route for the turnover.

A little over a minute later, Dontae Strickland roared into the end zone over the right side of the line, clinching the game and bowl eligibility for the first time in five years for the Orange (6-2, 3-2 ACC) with 1:05 on the clock.Strickland’s score was the capper in an offensive explosion where SU rolled up 561 yards, including 480 through the air, and 30 first downs on the Wolfpack (5-2, 2-2).

After N.C. State opened the game with a three-and-out, Syracuse responded with a field goal from Andre Szmyt. The 29-yard kick gave the Orange an early 3-0 lead.

The ‘Pack struck back with a big play touchdown to go in front, but that lead was short-lived. Two plays later, Eric Dungey dropped a perfectly thrown bomb into the arms of Nykeim Johnson, who raced the rest of the way for an 82-yard touchdown. Szmyt’s extra point kick made it 10-7, SU, less then six minutes into the action.

Syracuse added onto the lead on their next possession. Jamal Custis’ 45-yard reception got the Orange into the red zone and Jarveon Howard finished the drive by fighting into the end zone from two yards out. Szmyt tacked on the conversion for a 17-7 lead.

Two possessions later, SU was in the end zone once more. Dontae Strickland connected with Eric Riley for a 48-yard gain on a halfback pass, then two plays later, Dungey and Custis hooked up on a 20-yard pass in the right side of the end zone to cap the 30-second drive with another touchdown. Szmyt added the extra point once more for a 24-7 Syracuse lead with 2:39 left in the first quarter.

With Syracuse in the Rankings, What’s Next For the Orange? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

It happened, Orange Nation. It finally happened. For the first time since 2001, Syracuse is ranked in the national polls. The Orange check in at 22nd in the AP Poll and 24th in the Coaches Poll.
Not only is Syracuse in the rankings, but it is the second highest rated ACC team in the AP Poll.

This is unchartered territory for this team. They can just as easily lose it next week as theyearned it with the win against NC State.

But the win has aspirations higher in central New York. This team seems to want more than the Pinstripe Bowl. Eight wins certainly is not out of the question. So what exactly does SU have to do to elevate above a second trip to Yankee Stadium?

With four games remaining on the schedule, two against ranked teams and three away from home, there is certainly no shortage of tests down the final stretch. Syracuse has yet to win a game in November under Dino Babers, but they had also yet to win after the bye with Babers coming into this year. Now, they’re 2-0 post-bye in 2018. As Babers has said, 2018 is different.

The Orange currently is tied for second in terms of total record in ACC with three other teams. But SU is the only team in the conference besides Clemson with a ranked win. With the rest of the ACC in a down year, there is a chance Syracuse could be the most appealing team in the conference.

Syracuse Football: Eric Dungey sends clear message to his critics (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football quarterback Eric Dungey isn’t ready to ride the bench just yet. Dungey sent a clear message to his critics, he’s here to stay.

There was a lot of hoopla this week about quarterback controversy with the way Tommy DeVito saved the day vs North Carolina. Fans were ready to throw Eric Dungey in the dungeon and move on to the hot new sexy thing (me included).

DeVito had saved the day twice this season (vs Florida State and vs North Carolina) and on the same token Dungey had been struggling over the last month. It seemed like the perfect time to make the switch at quarterback permanent.

That had to bother Eric Dungey who had given his blood, sweat, and tears to this program over the last four years. Dungey was angry and he used that as a massive chip on his shoulder and had one of the best games of his career in the most important game of his career. Babers decided to stick with his veteran quarterback in a game that decided bowl eligibility.

Dungey threw for 411 yards, three touchdown passes (one rushing touchdown) and most importantly no turnovers. In one moment Dino Babers decided to go to the youngster in Tommy DeVito and then smartly went back to Dungey and stayed with him throughout the rest of the contest.

A College Football Team Is Ranked For The 1st Time Since 2001 (thespun.com; Machlin)

This past weekend in college football saw a whopping eight ranked teams lose to unranked teams. As a result, there were a bunch of fresh faces on Sunday’s newly-released coaches poll. But one new face really stands out from the crowd.

The Syracuse Orange, who beat No. 22 N.C. State 51-41 on Saturday, were ranked No. 24 on the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Their 2018 debut on the poll also marks the first time since 2001 that the team has been ranked nationally.

Syracuse’s six wins this year are already the most they’ve had since 2013.

Syracuse football cracks the USA Today Coaches poll at No. 24. It’s the first time the program has been nationally ranked since 2001.
— Stephen Bailey (@Stephen_Bailey1) October 28, 2018

In 2001, under then-head coach Paul Pasqualoni, the Orange reached No. 14 before losing to Miami (FL). They went on to finish No. 18 after beating Kansas State in the Insight Bowl.
Though they have little-to-no chance of overtaking Clemson for a spot in the ACC Championship game, the Orange are poised for their first bowl appearance since 2013.

Among notable names from that 2001 Syracuse team is former NY Giants WR David Tyree.

The skinny
Virginia now appears to be the favorite in the ACC Coastal following Virginia Tech’s blowout loss at the hands of Georgia Tech. Not much was expected of the Cavaliers this season, but Bronco Mendenhall has continued to prove his mettle as a head coach; he should be garnering coach of the year consideration.
Oregon has fallen far in the last two weeks. They lost a road game at Washington State, which knocked them from a projected Rose Bowl berth following their win over Washington. That loss was defensible, but the Ducks came out completely flat and got routed in Tucson by Arizona in a loss that effectively ends their chances of winning a conference championship.
Utah has reeled off four consecutive wins, all by double-digits, which has the Utes in position to make a run at Pasadena. They have as good a shot as any in a wide open PAC-12; Utah is currently the heavy favorite in the PAC-12 South, and could be looking at a rematch with Washington State for a spot in the Rose Bowl.
Penn State is the first team out of the New Year’s Six this week after pulling out a win over Iowa. The Nittany Lions still have a strong chance of earning an at-large berth if they can win three of their final four games. They head to Ann Arbor this week and then host Wisconsin the next before finishing up with Rutgers and Maryland.

Sapakoff: Clemson football rivalry with FSU is RIP after Seminoles ‘quit’ (postandcourier.com; Sapakoff)

Bad sign for Florida State during a pregame ritual Saturday: their faux Chief Osceola student mascot proudly rode across the grass at Doak Campbell Stadium on horseback but a flaming spear he launched into the cartoonish Seminoles logo at midfield didn’t stick.

No. 2 Clemson, amused, rolled to a 59-10 ACC victory over overmatched Florida State.

The Tigers, like last week at N.C. State and the game before at Wake Forest, were brilliant and dazzling.

The Seminoles were lousy.

Poor execution and coaching combined with a sustained lack of focus following the first big mistake — a roughing the kicker penalty in the second quarter that led to Clemson’s first touchdown.

“First time since I’ve been here I felt like we had some guys that quit on our football team,” first-year Florida State head coach Willie Taggart said, “and that just can’t be tolerated.”

Clemson-FSU rivalry, RIP.

Once good for the ACC, this series is now bad for TV.

Even a noon start didn’t live up to its modest billing.

Too bad, because the formerly feared Seminoles made Clemson get better.

The current version of FSU football is 4-4 overall, 2-4 in the ACC and stuck in a Sunshine State sinkhole.

ESPN's Paul Finebaum explains why Clemson is the new King of the ACC (theclemsoninder.com; Staff)

On ESPN SportsCenter Sunday morning, college football analyst and radio show host Paul Finebaum was basically asked if Florida State was going to get back to where it once was, as King of the ACC in football, anytime soon. A lofty position Clemson has since taken over in the last few years.

Finebaum indicated things could get worse before they get better for the Seminoles.

“I think it will get worse before it gets better,” he said. “I have tried to find a reason to believe that Willie Taggart can be successful at Florida State, I can’t find a reason to believe it.”

“(Clemson at FSU) Used to be ‘The Game’ in the country in a lot of years, but this program (FSU) has no momentum and when you quit like that at home, everyone gives. It affects recruiting. It affects momentum and I just don’t know where they go right now,” Finebaum continued. “I realize this is his is first year, but there is no sign of hope. Nothing at all in Tallahassee to believe in right now.”

"We got spooked a little bit with all the pass interference penalties being called. We were afraid to even touch a guy, and that’s just the way it is."
Gotta love this delusional whining from their HC. His DB's weren't afraid to hold on for dear life is what it was. They held, grabbed and even tried to tackle our receives when they flew by them. LOL "afraid to touch them". Indeed.

so the best score by a QB was from a kid that got beat by 20 and Finley played pretty well and not top 5.

Dungey had Syracuse breathing fire...

I like that line.

Finley threw for a career-high 473 yards and receiver Kelvin Harmon rebounded from a subpar outing with 11 catches for a career-high yards.

State 23
