Welcome to Cyber Monday!

Cyber Monday takes place on the Monday after Thanksgiving, and is the largest online shopping day of the year in the United States. The term was coined by Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation, while working with Scott Silverman and others, at Shop.org. In 2005, shortly before Thanksgiving, Shop.org put out a press release highlighting the growing amount of sales that took place on the day. Research from 2004 had shown that the day was the 12th largest online shopping day of the year. After the term made its debut, it has been used as a marketing tool by retailers, and the public has embraced the day. As of 2017, sales have increased each year since its inception, transforming the day from the 12th largest online shopping day, to the largest. In 2006 there were $610 million of sales on the day, and in 2016 there were $3.45 billion in sales, marking the first time online sales had passed $3 billion on a single day in the United States. Half or more of the sales from the day are from work computers, suggesting that consumers still want to do more shopping after Black Friday, want to take advantage of the days' deals, or want to hide the gifts they are buying for family members.

Cyber Monday is being observed today! It has been observed the Monday after Thanksgiving since 2005.

Babers is in Unfamiliar Territory Too (spectrumlocalnews.com; video; Staff)

As SU football approaches ten wins, Head Coach Dino Babers talks about reaching that plateau only a few times in his career.

Four Downs: No. 19 Syracuse - Boston College (bceagles.com; Rubin)

The 2018 college football season began with heightened expectations for Boston College. The changing tides in the ACC created a visible optimism for the Eagles, and the team's reputation helped build a swagger many thought would take it to the top of the mountain in the ultra-competitive Atlantic Division.

A 7-2 record heading into the Clemson game validated that feeling, which is what makes the last three weeks so much harder to swallow. The Eagles finished the season with a 7-5 record following Saturday's 42-21 loss to No. 19 Syracuse and now enter their bowl season without an eighth win that seemed inevitable at the beginning of November.

"It's definitely a disappointment," wide receiver and kick returner Michael Walker said. "We came into the season aiming for an ACC Championship. That was the goal. We were up for that playing Clemson. It hasn't gone our way the past the last few games. We just have to end on a good note and send the seniors out on the right note, including myself."

Before NFL stardom, Tom Coughlin’s formative years came at Syracuse (DO; Gutierrez)

Tom Coughlin couldn’t find his car keys.

It was 1974 and Coughlin, the 27-year-old head football coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology, had to leave his house for the biggest interview of his life. He was a Division III head coach hoping to return to Syracuse, his alma mater, as an assistant. He felt he was ready to make the jump into Division I coaching, so he got ready to head east on Interstate 90 for the job interview — only his keys weren’t where he’d left them.

Coughlin scrambled. He looked everywhere. About an hour after he was supposed to be in Manley Field House for an interview, Coughlin called then-head coach Frank Maloney. He needed to reschedule.

“He felt terrible,” Maloney recalled last month. “Then he told me what really happened: His kids were playing with his car keys. I had kids the same age, so I understood.”

Coughlin, 72, serves as the Jacksonville Jaguars executive vice president for football operations. He lives in Florida with his wife Judy, whom he married in his hometown of Waterloo before his senior year at SU. During his time at SU, he worked long hours at a desk in a corner room of Manley Field House, designing drills and studying personnel back when a pencil was still one of a coach’s most important note-taking tools.

Notebook: Self-Inflicted Wounds Define Eagles' Loss in Regular Season Finale - The Heights (bcheights.com; Smart)

No. 19 Syracuse’s Eric Dungey threw for 362 yards and three touchdowns while running for three more, and Boston College football suffered its third-consecutive loss to end the regular season, falling 42-21, on Saturday. The Eagles (7-5, 4-4 Atlantic Coast) trailed by just a touchdown with 13:26 left in the third quarter after Anthony Brown found Ben Glines for a 29-yard touchdown. But that would prove to BC’s last scoring play, while Dungey guided the Orange (9-3, 6-2) to two more touchdown drives in a rout that flipped the script on last year’s regular season finale in which the Eagles coasted to a 42-14 win in upstate New York.

Here are four things that stood out from a loss that has BC head coach Steve Addazio on the hot seat, especially with the Eagles seemingly destined to finish 7-6 for the fifth time in six years.

1) Injuries

In Monday afternoon’s weekly press conference, fresh off handing AJ Dillon the ball 37 times in a loss to Florida State, Addazio said that the banged-up sophomore running back was “gaining ground on this injury” and that he felt that “we’re going to see another level up this week of him.” Instead, Dillon was limping on the sideline just eight minutes into Saturday’s game and would ultimately leave after just 12 carries for 56 yards. It was clear once again that he wasn’t 100 percent—he was hesitant to cut upfield, so any runs on the outside were largely ineffective. Dillon went for 17 yards on one carry, but in his other 11, he averaged just 3.3 yards per rush. It was another frustrating entry in the saga of Addazio handling Dillon’s workload this season, as the sophomore has now left the last four games early.

Syracuse Football: Dino Babers fulfills his 2018 guarantee with 9th win (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers delivers on an emotional guarantee with his team getting their ninth win of the season.

With Joe Namath like bravado, Dino Babers following a 42-14 beatdown to the Boston College Eagles to end the 2017 season casually said that 2018 would be a year that people would be talking about for a long time.

That was bold to say the least. At the time Dino Babers had his second straight 4-8 season and the fourth straight season that the Orange would not go bowling. Why put that pressure on himself to deliver or else?

If Syracuse had another ho-hum 4-8 season, many would’ve called for Dino’s head, but instead he delivers on that 2017 guarantee with several accolades for the trophy case after a 42-21 beatdown of the Eagles in the regular season finale:

Syracuse has clinched a nine win season for the first time since 2001 (team finished 10-3 under Paul Pasqualoni)

The Orange are bowling for the first time since 2013

Syracuse was ranked this season for the first time since 2001

Bowl Game Options: Syracuse Football looking ahead to which bowl will choose the Orange (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

The Syracuse University football team just capped off a regular season to remember, capturing a total of nine wins for the first time since 2001.

Now, Orange fans play the waiting game, as bowl game committees ponder which teams they want in their game as decision time draws near.

Below are each of three options where the Orange are directly in their crosshairs:

2018 New Era Pinstripe Bowl
Thursday, December 27 (Yankee Stadium -- Bronx, NY)
ACC vs. Big Ten
Possible Opponents: Penn State, Iowa, Northwestern, Michigan State

2018 Camping World Bowl
Friday, December 28 (Camping World Stadium -- Orlando, Fla.)
ACC vs. Big 12
Possible Opponents: West Virginia, Iowa State, Texas

2018 Hyundai Sun Bowl
Monday, December 31 (Sun Bowl Stadium -- El Paso, Tex.)
ACC vs. Pac 12
Possible Opponents: Washington, Utah, Stanford, Oregon

The two bowl games that seem the frontrunners are the New Era Pinstripe Bowl in New York and the Camping World Bowl in Orlando.

The decision won't be made until later next week, which is when conference championships will be played.

CAMPING WORLD BOWL: N.C. STATE VS. WEST VA

Looks like there's a chance we're going to see the Wolfpack meet the Mountaineers after all this season. After their scheduled September game in Raleigh was wiped out by a hurricane, N.C. State and West Virginia wound up stubbing their toes late in the season to fall short of respective conference title aspirations. Ryan Finley vs. Will Grier is worth the price of admission here.

ACC Football Rx: End of ACC football on Raycom (accfootballrx.com; HM)

End of ACC football on Raycom

First Raycom ACC football broadcast (then called Jefferson Pilot Teleproductions):

Picture is from GM 1 of JP/Lincoln/@RaycomSports @ACCFootball. Saturday at Noon, #452 & last syndicated over-the-air game, @PackFootball @uncfball. Thanks to all the dedicated RS staff & extended family of free-lancers for their passion to bring games to ACC fans since ‘84 pic.twitter.com/Dp3AWVNe8L
— Rob Reichley (@RIRob) November 22, 2018

It's a little ironic that the ACC team in that first game - Maryland - is no longer in the conference, while the non-conference foe - Syracuse - is.

Last ACC football game on Raycom: NC State at UNC. How appropriate that the sports network which was almost synonymous with "Tobacco Road" would get two teams from the Triangle area in its final football game.

Of course, that doesn't mean the ACC is done with Raycom Sports yet - there's still a lot of basketball to televise this season - but football is done, barring something unexpected.

ACC Football Rx: FSU Season Ends Early - 11/26/18 (accfootballrx.com; HM)

FSU Season Ends Early - 11/26/18

From ESPN's College GameDay Final - Rivalry Week 2018 Edition

Requiem for FSU Bowl Streak, Non-losing Streak. [my sub-title]

Florida State won't be in a bowl this year, ending the unofficial longest active streak in the country at 36 after losing to Florida and mercifully putting to bed the long-running feud about vacated bowl games. It also marks the first time since 1976 that Florida State finished with a losing record. To put that into perspective, that's the same year Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple. We've seen eight "Rocky" movies, seven presidents and several Kansas wins since then. It's been a while.

Ready for 2019 [their sub-title]

Florida State: There's a contingent of the fan base eager to fire Willie Taggart already. Given that he already has as many losses to rivals Miami and Florida as Jimbo Fisher had during his entire tenure, the anger is legitimate. But Taggart inherited a roster far worse off than people understood, and the offense did seem to progress as the year went on. Until there's a talent infusion on the O-line, things aren't going to get a lot better, but the fact that Taggart hasn't let this thing go completely off the rails is a good start.

Virginia Tech and Florida State: Remember their big Week 1 game? Boy, that was a long time ago. Combined record for the preseason Nos. 19 and 20 teams: 10-13.

COMMENTS: This is not the end of Seminole football by any means, but there is some sadness among fans when a long streak comes to an end. For instance, I was a bit anxious when I thought the Hokies' win streak over Virginia was about to come to an end Friday - but I got a pass this time. All man-made things do come to an end, though.

Pitt faces uphill battle against Clemson in ACC Championship (cardiachill.com; Whaley)

I’ll admit it.

As a fan, there’s some degree of ‘Happy to be here’ when I think about Pitt’s season and the upcoming ACC championship game against Clemson. I’m not sure the players feel that way (at least I hope they don’t) but as a fan with no real vested interest here, it’s kind of hard not to feel that way.

Pitt’s football team wasn’t expected to do much this season, in case you’ve forgotten. Many prognostications had them around the five-win or six-win plateau and, while many Pitt fans were more optimistic, the national expectations weren’t high. That was, of course, completely understandable. Pitt had a new quarterback, was coming off of five-win season, and lost its two best defenders from a secondary that was already not real good. Five wins seemed quite possible, particularly with a tough schedule that saw them face three non-conference teams in the Top 15.

But while Pitt didn’t pull off any major surprises, the difference this year was that they managed to win a bunch of jump balls, so to speak. Games against the likes of Syracuse, Duke, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Wake Forest, and Virginia Tech all went the Panthers’ way when, in a typical year, you might otherwise expect more of a split there. Plus, safe to say, after another loss to North Carolina, a split there would have been welcomed.

ACC Panic Room: Pour a can of Red Bull out for Larry Fedora (wralsportsfan.com; video; Brownlow & Ovies)

Lauren Brownlow and Joe Ovies discuss North Carolina's decision to part ways with Larry Fedora and where the program can go from here.

North Carolina Football: 5 Candidates to replace Larry Fedora (saturdayblitz.com; Mitchell)

North Carolina football has decided to move on from head coach Larry Fedora after seven seasons and back-to-back nine loss campaigns.

At one-time one of the most well regarded names in the coaching profession, Larry Fedora has been fired by North Carolina after back-to-back seasons at the bottom of the ACC, finishing his seven-year tenure at the school with a 45-43 record.

Getting the Chapel Hill gig following a successful stint at Southern Miss, Fedora’s tenure with the Tar Heels started off well as he helped right the ship of a program following the tumultuous tenure of Butch Davis, which brought with it heat from the NCAA due to improper benefits and academic fraud.

After a year away from the postseason due to a bowl ban, despite an 8-4 record in his first year, Fedora led the Heels to four consecutive bowl berths, culminating in an 11-3 season in 2015 where they went 8-0 in the ACC prior to losing to Clemson in the conference title game. The Heels finished ranked 15th in both major polls, but things were never as good again.

It was downhill from there, culminating in consecutive nine loss seasons in 2017 and 2018. Fedora went 26-14 in ACC play through his first five seasons, but managed just a 2-14 mark against conference opponents over the last two seasons.

Report: Georgia DC Mel Tucker linked to ACC head coaching vacancy (saturdaydownsouth.com; Olson)

Successful teams can only keep a coaching staff intact for so long. Just ask Alabama about trying to keep a defensive coordinator after multiple national championships.

Now Kirby Smart will see his own defensive coordinator linked to head coaching jobs. According to an ESPN report, Bulldogs DC Mel Tucker is expected to be a candidate for the North Carolina job.

The Tar Heels officially fired Larry Fedora Sunday after seven seasons and a 45-43 record. UNC has went 1-7 in ACC play in back-to-back seasons, but has shown the potential to compete, going to four straight bowl games from 2013-16.

Current ESPN analyst and former North Carolina coach Mack Brown and former LSU offensive coordinator Matt Candada, the current interim head coach at Maryland, are also named among the list of potential candidates in the ESPN report.

Clawson Announces Promotions on Coaching Staff - Wake Forest University (wakeforestsports.com)

Wake Forest head football coach Dave Clawson today announced a pair of promotions within the football staff.

Lyle Hemphill, Wake Forest's safeties coach for the last two seasons, has been named defensive coordinator. Dave Cohen, who has coached Wake Forest's defensive line for the past five seasons, has been named the assistant head coach for defense.

"Under Lyle's and Dave's leadership, I saw improvement in all phases of our defense," said Clawson. "These promotions are well-earned and are the best decision for Wake Forest as we move forward and into our bowl game."

Hemphill came to Wake Forest prior to the 2017 season after having served as the defensive coordinator at Stony Brook where he was named the FCS defensive coordinator of the year in 2015. In his first year at Wake Forest, Hemphill mentored safety Jessie Bates III who was a second round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2018.

Cohen has served as a defensive coordinator at Fordham, Delaware, Western Michigan and Rutgers and as the head coach at Hofstra. Cohen was the national defensive coordinator of the year in 2003 as he helped Delaware to the FCS national championship. At Wake Forest, Cohen has mentored four players who have gone onto the NFL including DE Duke Ejiofor who was drafted by Houston in 2018.

Hyatt Repeats As ACC Jacobs Blocking Trophy Winner (clemsontigers.com)

Clemson senior offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt has been voted the winner of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy for the second consecutive year, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Sunday.

The Jacobs Blocking Trophy has been awarded annually since 1953 to the player selected the most outstanding blocker in the ACC by a poll of the league’s head coaches and defensive coordinators. Hyatt becomes 13th repeat recipient of the award in league history and the first Clemson player to be recognized multiple times. This marks the ninth time in league history that a Tiger has claimed the trophy.

The trophy is given in memory of William P. Jacobs, who served as president of Presbyterian College from 1935 to 1945. Hyatt will be recognized next weekend during activities surrounding the 2018 Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game, which is set for next Saturday evening at 8 p.m. at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium. Hyatt and his Clemson teammates will face Pitt for the conference crown.

Hyatt, a 6-foot-5, 305-pound native of Suwanee, Georgia, is a four-year starter for the Tigers and has played more snaps from scrimmage than any player in program history. A third-team All-ACC selection as a freshman three years ago and a first-team honoree each of the previous two seasons, Hyatt won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy this year for his role in a Clemson offense leads the ACC and ranks among the nation’s top 10 in scoring (45.7 ppg) and total yards per game (539.1).
