Syracuse's 2019 football schedule released; features 8 conference matchups (DO; Liberman)

The 2019 Syracuse football schedule was released this Wednesday afternoon by the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Orange, coming off a 10-3 record and their best season since 2001, will look to repeat this season’s effort in their 130th season next year. SU opens 2019 with back-to-back road games for the first time since 2010, starting the year at Liberty on Aug. 31 before a Sept. 7 matchup with Maryland in College Park.

Following the early road trip, Syracuse will host three straight games, starting with a matchup against defending national champion Clemson on September 14. Syracuse has played Clemson arguably as tough as any opponent in the country over the last two seasons. The Orange toppled the Tigers in the Carrier Dome back in 2017 and nearly repeated the effort this season on the road, eventually falling 27-23.

Following the bout with the Tigers, Syracuse will host the back-end of a home-and-home with Western Michigan, before capping the non-conference slate against FCS Holy Cross, their first matchup since 1973. Syracuse travels to North Carolina State on October 10, before hosting Pittsburgh the following weekend.

The rest of the schedule features home matchups against Boston College and Wake Forest and road contests at Florida State, Duke and Louisville.

Evaluating Syracuse’s 2019 Football Schedule – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

Syracuse’s schedule for the 2019 football season was released today and there are plenty of interesting takeaways. All of the opponents and locations of the games were known prior to today, the only true “release” was the skeleton of the schedule.

Tough Opening Stretch

While the opponents aren’t particularly imposing from the jump, the challenges are. Syracuse will likely be opening the season as solid favorites by our friends in the desert for the first two weeks. However, the Orange in undergoing major changes on the offensive side of the ball, notably at quarterback and left tackle. That will be tough when you start the year with back-to-back true road games for the first time since 2010. Liberty isn’t the biggest test of the year, but Maryland provides a Power Five challenge. Sure, the Terrapins will have a new head coach. But they should still provide a reasonable challenge, especially on the backend of an Orange road trip. All of that sets up the Orange’s home and ACC opener against the defending champion Clemson Tigers. Assuming SU doesn’t trip up in the first two games, then this matchup very well could be the one that College Gameday travels to.

ACC Football Rx: 2019 Schedule Analysis: Games/Week (RX; HM)

Last year around this time we dove into the 2018 schedule and told you that the conference needed to even out the schedule in preparation for the ACC Network launch. How'd they do? Here are 2018 and 2019 side-by-side:

HM 011719.png

The minimum number of games is still 4, but the maximum is 13 (down from 14). Also, the number of weeks within +/- 2 games of the average (8 games) increased from 7 in 2018 to 9 in 2019. This despite having an extra week AND one fewer game (thanks to the Wake Forest/UNC non-conference game, which cuts inventory by one).

The league achieved this, in part, by cutting 3 games from the first 2 weeks, and spreading them out. In the past, the first 2 weeks were almost all non-conference games, resulting in a huge glut of games - but in 2019 there are 4 ACC games in the first 2 weeks.

Also, in 2018, there were only 2 non-conference games in weeks 6 through 10, and only 8 OOC games after week #7; in 2019 there are 12 non-conference games after week #7.

2019 ACC football schedule release: Dates set for Clemson-Georgia Tech opener, FSU-Miami and more (cbssports.com; Patterson)

Trevor Lawrence and the reigning College Football Playoff national champion Clemson Tigers will kick off their 2019 campaign at home against a conference rival as the premier game on Thursday night of the first weekend of the season. Cross-division rival Georgia Tech comes to visit Death Valley on Aug. 29 for the on-campus kickoff weekend special, which also serves as the college football launch for the league's new ACC Network, which officially goes live a week earlier on Aug. 22.

All of these details, along with dates for every ACC college football game in the upcoming season, were finalized this week with the release of the 2019 schedule. Many of the schedule's highlights -- like the four neutral-site Week 1 kickoff classic appearances -- were already announced, but that hasn't lessened the excitement of seeing games like Duke vs. Alabama in Atlanta, Florida State vs. Boise State in Jacksonville, Miami vs. Florida in Orlando and North Carolina vs. South Carolina in Charlotte on the schedule for Saturday, Aug. 31.

The ACC will get to not only start the first weekend of the 2019 season but finish it, taking the Labor Day Monday spotlight with Notre Dame's visit to play Louisville. That's one of the five contractually-obligated ACC opponents for the Irish, a full ACC member in all other sports, along with home games against Virginia (Sept. 28), Virginia Tech (Nov. 2) and Boston College (Nov. 23) as well a trip to Durham to play Duke on Nov. 09.

ACC Is Treating Its Schedule Against Notre Dame Like They’re Bowl Games (onefootdown.com; Vowles)

The ACC released its football schedule for 2019, and if you’re the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, you’re feeling pretty special right now. Why is that? Because this year, the ACC feels that it needs as much practice time as it gets before facing Notre Dame.

Yes, you’re looking at that correctly. Notre Dame will play its usual 5 ACC games, and in 3 of those games, the Irish opponent will have a BYE week leading up to the game. In another game, the Irish will be the season opener.

Louisville Cardinals (season opener)
Virginia Cavaliers (play Old Dominion Monarchs in the week prior)
Virginia Tech Hokies (BYE)
Duke Blue Devils (BYE)
Boston College Eagles (BYE)
While this does seem like normal operating procedure for the ACC, only 4 games against the Irish since the deal in 2014 have seen the Irish opponent with a bye week leading up to the game.

Five Takeaways From the Release of the 2019 ACC Football Schedule - Stadium (watchstadium.com; Wittry)

The 2019 ACC football schedule was released Wednesday, and we examined it in its entirety.

Here are our biggest takeaways as we look ahead at a number of storylines, including Clemson’s chances of repeating as the national champion.

First game of the season
Defending national champion Clemson will host Georgia Tech on Thursday, August 29 in the first ACC game of the season. What an introduction to the conference for new Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins.

Sure, Collins has been on Georgia Tech’s staff twice previously, so he’s not entirely unfamiliar with the ACC, but his first game as the Yellow Jackets’ head coach will be on the road against the likely preseason No. 1 team and potential Heisman Trophy frontrunner in quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Talk about a tough spot.

It’ll also be our first time seeing Tech’s new-look offense as the program moves away from the triple-option.

Speaking of Thursday night games…
There are five on the ACC schedule next season. In addition to Georgia Tech-Clemson, there’s also:

North Carolina-Wake Forest (Sept. 12)
Syracuse-NC State (Oct. 10)
North Carolina-Pittsburgh (Nov. 14)
NC State-Georgia Tech (Nov. 21)

Georgia Tech, NC State and North Carolina will each play twice on a Thursday. Georgia Tech and Syracuse both have a bye week before their game in Raleigh in October, as do Pittsburgh and North Carolina before their game in mid-November.

ACC 2019 football schedules feature three Thursday night games for Triangle teams :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; Staff)

The Atlantic Coast Conference has released the 2019 football schedule. The Triangle will be part of three Thursday night games and two visits from the national champion Clemson Tigers.

Duke opens the season Aug. 31 in Atlanta in the Chick-fil-A kickoff game against Alabama. The Blue Devils have 6 home games as part of their 11-game schedule that concludes with a home game hosting Miami on Nov. 30.

2019 team by team ACC football schedule
North Carolina opens the season Aug. 31 in a border war against South Carolina in the Belk College Kickoff Game in Charlotte. It marks the return of Mack Brown to the Tar Heel sideline after a successful stint at the University of Texas. The Heels travel to Winston-Salem for a Thursday night non-conference game at Wake Forest Sept. 12, host Brown's former team Appalachian State on Sept. 21, welcome national champion Clemson on Sept. 28 and Duke Oct. 26 for the Victory Bell.

North Carolina State hosts in-state rival East Carolina on Aug. 31 to start the season. They travel to West Virginia Sept. 14, have a pair of Thursday night games (Oct. 10 hosting Syracuse and Nov. 21 at Georgia Tech), host national champion Clemson Nov. 9 and close out the season hosting North Carolina on Nov. 30.

2 feet of snow could fall in Upstate NY winter storm (PS; Coin)

The first snowfall forecasts are in for Upstate New York’s weekend storm, and they’re big.

Nearly 2 feet of snow could fall Saturday afternoon through Monday afternoon, with the heaviest bands in Central New York, the National Weather Service said.

“Total snow accumulations of 12 to 20 inches are possible,” the weather service office in Binghamton said. A map issued by that office shows up to 24 inches in Madison, Otsego and Chenango counties.

Meteorologists in the Binghamton office plan to hold a webinar this afternoon to brief emergency managers on the impending storm.

Up to 2 feet of snow could fall in parts of Central New York and Southern Tier this weekend.

Elsewhere in Upstate, weather service offices are cautiously saying at least 6 inches will fall, depending on the track of the storm. They’ll issue more specific forecasts as the storm gets closer.

“This storm is still a few days away, so exact snow and ice amounts can still change,” the weather service said.

Student-athletes in the Division I autonomy conferences would be guaranteed access to mental health services if legislation is adopted at the 2019 NCAA Convention in Orlando, Florida, later this month.
The Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern conferences will consider legislative proposals for the year in their business session Thursday, Jan. 24, including whether to require schools to make mental health services and resources available to student-athletes.
The proposal is the latest move to improve the college experience for student-athletes and underscores the commitment to all aspects of student-athlete health. If adopted, the rule would require schools to make mental health services and resources available through the athletics department and/or the institution’s health services or counseling services department. In addition, schools must distribute mental health educational materials and resources, including a guide to the mental health services and resources available at the school and information regarding how to access them, to student-athletes throughout the year.
The proposal is consistent with the Interassociation Consensus: Mental Health Best Practices released in 2017.
The autonomy conferences also will vote on allowing team meetings during the week immediately after the season, which current legislation requires to be free of athletically related activities.
